GREAT show, Donnie! I have an Uncle Don from Appalachia area, which is where my family is originally from. The story about Dennis Martin was so tragic, and I firmly believe those Green Berets were called in, after Dennis went missing, to hunt down the "wild men" creatures! Dennis, if he'd lived, would be my age now....

In Idaho, I'd drive as far as I could, ride my bicycle as far as I could, then walk as far as I could, never even thought of danger. Hindsight tells me I was foolish but I had an angel on my shoulder I guess. I was a "leave no trace" hiker so probably would never have been found. I will say this though, I felt safer out there than I ever have in a big city.

If you hear what sounds like two peace's of wood knocking together be careful because that is what a black bear does when your getting to close to her cubs she will smack her teeth together and it will sound like two peace's of wood smacked together but that's the way a bear tells you your to close.

Ive never told this story to a public forum before, but as I've been learning more and more about disappearances in smoky mountain NP I can't help but put this comment up to see if anybody has had a similar strange experience. In late september 2015 I decided to hike the mountains to sea trail. I started out at clingmans dome and hiked roughly 10 miles or so until I got to my back country campsite. I saw maybe 2 people the whole day I was hiking so you can imagine my terror when long after dark I'm laying in my tent trying to sleep and somebody comes into my camp. He had a French accent and sounded maybe in his 20s or 30s. He kept shining his light on my tent asking if anybody was there. He hung around my camp and left after about 5 minutes would be my guess but time is different when your heart is beating out of your chest. I never answered as I was a solo 23 year old female and even 8 years later I can't say I'd respond. I'd prefer they not know if I was male or female. Anyways after he left I finally fell asleep hours later. But it got my mind racing. If he was lost wouldn't he say hey I'm lost I don't know where I am and would sound panicky in some way but his voice seemed steady and calm. And if meant me harm would he not have tried to open the tent or something?? Part of my wonders if I encountered a ghost that night as I know there was a large French presence in that area in centuries passed plus clingmans dome is in sevier county after all, a French name. I hiked for over a month before all the creeks started freezing up and never heard about him or ran into a French guy at any point. But all these years later I still get the chills thinking about it and knowing all the creepy stories of disappearances have me wondering even more.

Hi Donnie. I live in middle TN but have always been drawn to East TN and the Smokie Mtns. I've have spent a lot of time there and feel a kinship to the area. I am intrigued by the mention of Green Beret presence in connection with these disappearances and "wild men". I have noticed what seems to be clearings in the woods when passing through New Found Gap but have been unable to reconcile these areas with towns or communities using maps and now Google Earth. Can you offer any explanations or input?

When I was 12-13 or so, we had a kid who probably spawned a wild man story or two, his grandmother, who occasionally he would come to see, was dirt poor, had a railroad shack, nothing else, barely stayed alive, so he took off for the mountains young, never attended school that I know of, he was the kid parents mistakenly told their kids to avoid, which, kids being kids, meant the opposite. He was 2 or 3 years older, taller and stronger than me and never spoke a word that I know of but he never hurt a soul. I was out drowning worms one day and there he was, we nodded and he just watched for a while, then went back into the woods. I saw him several more times afterward and one day tossed him a spare pocket knife I had...the look on his face was shock, he opened it, closed it, offered it back and when I shook my head and showed him my other one, he sort of smiled, pocketed it and went on his way. I heard stories about him roaming the hills and valleys but never anything bad, I just knew he could disappear into the woods like smoke. I doubt he had a long life but I'd say it was a good one. RIP Smitty, wherever you are.

On Hwy 40 just east of Knoxville, I stopped to get gas. I went in to pay. and I had one question. Where can I get a room for the night. They told me there was nothing for a hundred miles, ",right outside of Knoxville! "
They said there's a motel down that gravel road. I didn't believe that. So I said I wasn't intrested. Then it grew perks, the man said "you can get anything you want down there.
    girls, drugs, ect."
I told him all I wanted was a good night's sleep, paid and left.
About 2 miles down the road my tire went flat. I smelled a rat. I armed myself and changed my tire. Nothing eventful.
The next day when I got to New Bern NC.
I had the tire repaired. The valve core was missing. If I would have went down that gravel road I probably would not be here to write this. I wonder how many people went down that road, and how big the pile of bones is?

Poor little Dennis. Most every year of our lives my parents took us back to the Smokies. I remember how scary some places were in the mountains, a child could get lost very easily. Looking down the side of the mountain from the back window was a little scary all by itself!
I believe in what people call Bigfoot, and many other beasts. I saw they movie about Bigfoot as a kid in the 70's. When they flashed to Bigfoot in the bathroom scene, i jumped up from my seat and grabbed the head of the longhaired dude in front of me; he had on a pair of rubber flipflops on and twisted his ankle when he jumped up to run! It set off a chain reaction of bad mishaps.😂
People laughed that Bigfoot wasn't real. But I kept it in back of my mind all those years, waiting on someone and listening to every pic, every sighting and story. I still believe.
Thank you my friend! I'm a little late seeing it, but enjoyed it just the same. Lord bless and keep you and your family ❤🙏

The thing that’s just so strange is how so many of these people that disappear in these National Parks is the fact that many of them are super experienced hikers. Some of them have hiked the entire Appalachian trail more than once and some of them have been experienced climbers who have visited many of the nation’s national parks as well as some in other countries. Most are not just novice hikers that got off the trail, got turned around, and managed to get lost. Some of the kids that have disappeared in David Paulides 411 Missing books were found but where they were found defies logic. There are a couple of cases where they were toddlers and they were found 8 to 10 miles away and weren’t found for several days. Based on what they had to walk through to get where they were doesn’t make sense as there is no way a toddler could walk that far in a month let alone 2 or 3 days. Some of them don’t have a scratch on them and they don’t appear to be extremely dehydrated or anything. 😳
There was a case of a missing 3 year old child that was playing in a deep wooded area at his grandparents house while his grandmother was watching him. He had 2 of his grandparents dogs with him too. When she looked away for a second she heard him scream and ran to get him and he was just gone and so were the dogs. He was found 8 miles away and would have had to go through several areas of barbed wire fences and some extremely dense forested areas to get there and they found him perfectly fine, clean, and with no scratches. They even found there were no tears in his clothes which wouldn’t be possible if he crawled under barbed wire. They also found his jacket folded up next to him when they found him. What’s even crazier was the family’s 2 dogs were never found. Anyone who has dogs knows that just doesn’t happen. Some of the adults and children that are lucky enough to be found have no recollection as to how they got where they did and some of the children don’t either or say the creepiest things and describe strange creatures that either lured them into the forest or actually took them, but protected them. These stories are but just a few where they can’t understand how they got lost or where they ended up when found. Some of these stories sound more as if it’s some kind of paranormal activity, or who knows, maybe aliens have portals to other dimensions deep in the forest. Crazy I know, but there are soooo many of these disappearances they just cannot be explained that it is crazy.😳
I’m sure that’s why David Paulides started investigating these cases because no one was really aware of this happening or how it is happening to so many people over the last few years.

They were on an unofficial mission to answer the question of bipedal sightings. They weren’t sure if it was Bigfoot or a feral human. They searched a few days and then they were gone. 2 went insane and 27 were discharged. NDA’s for everyone.

hello again Donnie just want to tell you that a lot of your stories have a lot of truth in them.I will explain why I know much about things you speak of I grew up in S E Wva as I had spoke of in some of your post. So to let you know why I know many of these things I will tell you. As I have said my granddaughter’s family is From E Tennessee area some from theJohnson City area on her grand dads side it was Johnson’s andLawson’s she is a cousin to Doyle Lawson Of bluegrass band Quick silver. On her grandmas side was from Conway from Tennessee and N C side. Her cousin on that side Is Eustace Conway from Nat Geo mountain men.So I learned a lot about the Smokies. I moved to Ohio out of school for there was little work other than coal mines or timber which I done both for a short time. I have lived south of Cleveland most of my adult life but we always go back home as often as we can. A few years back we bought some acres of land about 125 miles of Cleveland. At night you can hear the Coyotes how. But there is something in those woods I am surrounded by farms way off in the distances and more than 56,000 thousand acres of public land. At night it can get quite eerie the coyotes become silent you get a feeling you are being watched I have heard tree thumping many of times the night skies are some times very dark some times after 2:00 am or so they can become very light almost like you could be in Alaska but my point is there’s truly things out there in the Wilderness. Some have been seen and some may never be seen about people disappearing well that is very true. I my self have seen thing’s I can not explain noise can get loud in the dark of night. I think now you will know I for one believe many of your post. For so much of them are true. Take care my friend and keep up good work on true History because what you tell for the most is very true unexplained.

A ginseng hunter walked up on Dennis' skull, shoe and sock in the early 1970s - downhill a few miles from Spence Field. But he didn't report it till years later, so they couldn't find the location again. So Dennis' remains were actually "found", just not proven. He probably got confused in the woods and kept walking downhill until he died from exposure.
