I remember being in school back in 82. A classmate of mine brought in a tape of Kilimanjaro one day (her older sister was a huge Teardrops fan). She played it at lunch break and danced on the desk with her best friend to this song. :-) That was my introduction to them. I bought the album myself shortly after.
I was a teenager in the early 80s. I was there for the launch of MTV. First generation Xer here. So, how did I not know about Teardrop Explodes until just recently?
If you were into Teardrop Explodes and then solo Julian Cope back when this was current then you were way cool!! Noone knew these guys when they were around and they were so fucking awesome that to this day I still have their records and CD's. It's great that this stuff is on youtube. trust and believe!.
No one knew these guys when they were around??? In 1981 they were one of the most hyped bands in the UK and got tons of exposure -they also had 3 Top20 singles in 8 months. Julian Cope basically refused to play the game but really, the Teardrop Explodes were already big and they could have been huge.
Julian may be mad as a hatter, but his voice is still resonant and lyrical now as it ever was. This is one of my most favourite memorable songs of the 80's cos it reminds me of when I first met my now husband. He introduced me to Teardrops and - though perhaps a little in denial now - was really into them big time then...Remember listening to this hon sitting in front of illegal gas fires, drinking instant coffee on doddery furniture in dingy student let flats ?
that whole late 70's early 80's vibe sounds great tho, treason, no more heroes and ghost town , just pure amber street lights dereliction riots football hooligans and the Yorkshire ripper on the loose lol fucking spooky times
consequently my reaction is this: the teardrop explodes is one of the best bands ever and julian cope is a bona fide genius. the dog-a-kagans are at the door
The note on the first syllable of "story" could have only come from England. They excel at stuff like that. Also the lyrics are very good. It really is just a story.
For a long time, this music was near impossible to find. Glad to see that Kilimanjaro is now on iTunes and that these videos are available. I can finally throw away the cassette tape I had since 1982 (kept in fear of never being able to find it again!).
Mad!, how dare you! Thats when he started to make sense! Mad indeed, Heheehe, yeah, I loved the Turtle look on Fried, that was fuckin' inspired! Anyway, Julian didn't so much go mad, Mad went Julian, and it couldn't Cope with him, and now he is my favourite favourite all time Hippy, and I Love Him Dearly.***gush gush*** Does everything with such an understated passion,he's even got a bit of propa Gravitas these days, with his books and stuff...
@furakkueroru Then you must think Coldplay sound like Madness. This sounds uncannily like Madness, particularly the piano. I can just imagine Suggs voice on this. Oh and btw all of you who think I"m talking Coldplay, sorry I mean cack, this is produced by Langer and Winstanley, who also produced? Yes you've guessed it : MADNESS. One thing it doesn't sound like is Coldplay. Do you realise it's just a, sorry, getting carried away there, huge insult to the wonderful Teardrops? oh and Madness!
I often wondered if Live Aid killed everything. The money moguls moved in when they realized how much money could be made. im probably wrong though. Just seems that all those small indie labels that produced such great bands died.
I've been living through changes And I could swing for you I can see the veins in my hands Are showing through But if you disguise What these things are doing to me If you criticize them I'll know that you can see Until you realise It's just a story Until you realise It's just a story Consequently my reaction Is getting rather strange I can see your course of action Leading to a change You've got to get ready for me Is it real Or is it treason Is it treason I've been living through changes It's not the same thing every day I hope it's not my age But I wouldn't like to say Mirror hopping days are a coarse reaction Oh it's very hard to fight I tried to find a plan of action But I couldn't get it right Until you realise It's just a story Until you realise It's just a story Until you realise It's just a story Until you realise It's just a story
@furakkueroru The thought of any sentient being comparing The Teardrop Explodes with (clears throat) *Coldplay* makes me sob, loudly and uncontrollably. Please don't do it again.
Julian was so damn talented. I wonder why The Teardrop Explodes never got success? They had more pop appeal than say, the likes of Echo & the Bunnymen or Thompson Twins and such ... It boggles my mind how underground UK bands like The English Beat and Siouxsie and the Banshees get some Alternative rock charts, but The Teardrop Explodes go totally unnoticed and fade into obscurity. Bad marketing maybe?
What a nutter. What A Tune. WHAT A BRILLIANT SONGWRITER JULIAN COPE IS!!!

MAKES ME FEEL YOUNG! this was the second LP I ever bought with my own money!
I was a teenager in the early 80s. I was there for the launch of MTV. First generation Xer here. So, how did I not know about Teardrop Explodes until just recently?
Yes! The 80's, a time when swinging your arms whilst dancing was cool.
Great singer/songwriter and a very clever bloke too

I must have been 'way cool' then mate. Cope writes some fantastic songs.
Tim Coe Oh you were! ...way cool thatis. I loved Julian Cope and Teardrop Explodes back in the mid eighties.
Fp Maggio I bought this,Reward and World Shut Your Mouth on 7" when they were out back then,so I must have been!
@@rjjcms1 This comment section is WAY COOL.

The Glory Days Of Julian & The Teardrops . The 2nd LP Wilder is vastly underated. Liverpool 🎸 😎!
Great songs but terrible production. I would love to see Cope - or anyone - re-record the whole album.
bought this in pennylane records great song
This is a subtle grower. The more I hear it over the years it just keeps getting better and stronger!
Tim Coe well said !!
One of the British singers that defined that generation/era I think !!!
Along with Weller,Andy Partridge,Colin Moulding,
etc !!
been trying to think of what this song was for ages! finally found it! takes me back to being a kid!
The Coral have definately payed homage to this great tune, with More than a lover....and why not...their in their neighbourhood......xx
Just bought the Deluxe Edition of "Kilimanjaro" yesterday and keep listening for hours and hours. A Masterpiece, no less.
Genius. Didn't get him in the music quiz at the pub. Unforgivable.
Thank God for the 80's.

My fave Teardrops song.
only getting into this band now, so happy they are great!!
Anyone heard the French version of this? Had it on a Teardrops 12inch B-side once, it was very good.
Como me gusta este tema, pueden pasar 1000 años mas y me va a seguir conmoviendo !
the music and lyrics melody got my head swirling the keyboards are spooky as fuck excellent
that whole late 70's early 80's vibe sounds great tho, treason, no more heroes and ghost town , just pure amber street lights dereliction riots football hooligans and the Yorkshire ripper on the loose lol fucking spooky times
This is added to my christmas playlist .
Love the bass line.
This is new too me...i love it.
Totally brilliant
Kinda looks like the melody of "Eight Days A Week". Love it!
I still like the song. Most videos made in the early part of the 80's weren't very good anyway.
But I don't let that take away from the song.
some great reposts here!

the dog-a-kagans are at the door

love it and so true

Fantásticos, gracias por colgar el vídeo.
Un saludo.:))
I always thought he was singing “I can see that the paint in my hands is showing through”, which makes no sense, but I prefer it.
Brilliant
Also in my top ten, but I don't mind him going mad. Happens to the best of us...
@furakkueroru...ahh sir ..you are a wordsmith indeedy.
what can i say,its fucking fantastic..
Until you realize its just a story.
Until you realise its just a story and we are all directors playing a part in the direction of our lives and as julian cope once sang REWARD
in the event of going insane whatever i lose will be a gain...and he has gone hasnt he...
succinct & to the point ! :D
forgot how insane this video is.... make that TWO boxes of frogs...
class
only berks argue about pop music
There were some fantastic groups around at this time, before gangsta rap, so called r'n'b and lip sinc crap polluted the airwaves!
@lakeyboy78 Hahaaa fuckin' awwright! so, so true. Made my day with that comment.
Mad!, how dare you! Thats when he started to make sense! Mad indeed, Heheehe, yeah, I loved the Turtle look on Fried, that was fuckin' inspired! @flares I agree
@PokerPlum I agree but just in case what's a whelk?
@lakeyboy78 Ha! Fabulous.
First Mullet of the 80s

the ica london
5*****!
His voice has a little bit of Paul Weller and the singer of ABC...
At least going mad convinced him not to wear headbands.
The painted dancer is Julian Cope?
sheer classic...only the best groups came from the uk !!! 80's rule lol
anybody got the original 1980 7" version on ZOO..?? ..can't see it anywhere here :~(
@lakeyboy78 That's pretty good! And true, too!
bob on this.
I've been living through changes
And I could swing for you
I can see the veins in my hands
Are showing through
But if you disguise
What these things are doing to me
If you criticize them
I'll know that you can see
Until you realise
It's just a story
Until you realise
It's just a story
Consequently my reaction
Is getting rather strange
I can see your course of action
Leading to a change
You've got to get ready for me
Is it real
Or is it treason
Is it treason
I've been living through changes
It's not the same thing every day
I hope it's not my age
But I wouldn't like to say
Mirror hopping days are a coarse reaction
Oh it's very hard to fight
I tried to find a plan of action
But I couldn't get it right
Until you realise
It's just a story
Until you realise
It's just a story
Until you realise
It's just a story
Until you realise
It's just a story

Julian Cope was actually a very attractive man, and I'm straight!
Love this song but the rest of the album is reaaaally slap dash I have to say. I was actually somewhat shocked by it on the virtue of this track.
Good point Shams. Another good one from that album! I had to stop and play it up again.
Take care!
"Shocked by the 'virtue' of this track" ?? Do you think you're a writer for the N.M.E. ?!?
NOW TRY Nick Gilding Music on RUclips!
I think eccentric is probally a bit charitable.
@yassymeeny You're having a laugh aren't you?. Coldplay have never done anything as good as Treason or Reward.
Agreed - sadly totally underrated.
He canny dance for toffee
ah il ya une version française? qui a osé?...bah çà doit être joli.....pfff!
i love the french version!
why do the rest of the band hardly feature in this vid? Love JC, but this is really pretentious!
Love the song - got it on 12" vinyl
Because he was totally pretentious and narcisstic - it's that simple.
Wtf is going on here.
mac is so much better
It's apples and oranges, The Crucial Three style.
you wish bromey
Terrible terrible Video. Fabulous Song
