  • Cockroaches are one of the most widespread and resilient creatures on this planet. They are practically everywhere around us, hiding in the walls, sewers, and perhaps your cupboard. They are also one of the most hated creatures by humans. If you are like most people, you will become determined to kill all of the roaches when you see them in your house. Despite such hatred towards them, how do cockroaches manage to thrive all around the globe?

    --------------------------------------------------
Following is the transcript of the video:
You might not want to think about this but over 3,500 species of cockroaches live on this planet.
The good news? Only about 30 of those species have adapted to live around humans.
The bad news? 30 species of cockroaches can live around us!
Roaches are one of the most common pests in the US. So, it's no surprise that humans are always trying to kill them. But no matter how many times we stomp them, squash them, and bomb them with toxic chemicals, these pesky pests always seem to pop up time and time again. So what's going on?
Let's take a closer look at the roach you probably know better than you'd like: Periplaneta Americana. AKA: the American Cockroach.
But this name is misleading. This guy is actually from Africa, not America. It made its way to the US by infesting boats in the 16th century. And has been spreading to almost every corner in the world ever since.
Turns out, it's one of the largest species of cockroach around. But that's not the only big thing about it. New research has revealed that it has a massive genome - one of the largest of any studied insect!
And many of these genes are exactly what make this roach a master survivor. Let's start with its genes associated with something called chemoreception. That's how roaches smell and taste their environment.
Turns out, they're actually way better at sniffing out and eating food than most other insects. The American roach has 154 olfactory receptors for smell and 544 gustatory receptors for taste - more than any other insect on the planet!
As a result, these cockroaches are not picky eaters. Sure, they like cheese, meat, and sugar like the rest of us. But they'll also go for things like cardboard, book bindings, human toenails, rotting meat, blood, excrement, and even each other.
That's right, these roaches have been known to eat other dead or crippled cockroaches - all in the name of survival. It sounds gross, but this diverse diet makes it easy to find a meal just about anywhere, even if it's poisonous to most animals.
This roach has a bunch of genes called cytochrome p450s, which help it withstand poisonous chemicals like peppermint. These genes code for detoxification enzymes, which keep the insects safe.
On top of that, this roach has a super-strong immune system that seeks out and kills harmful microbes and fungi, making the most unsanitary environment look like a 5-star hotel to the American cockroach.
Not gross enough, yet? Well consider this: cockroaches can live for nearly a week without their heads.
Yeah, that's not a myth. They don't have a highly-pressurized network of blood vessels like humans, so they don't bleed out. Instead, their necks actually seal off the opening.
They can't regenerate a whole head, but roaches do have an impressive set of regenerative superpowers. For up to the first two years of its life, the American roach goes through a series of regenerative molts as it matures into an adult. During a single molt stage, it can replace lost limbs. And over a series of molts, it can regrow antennae and even its eyes.
Roaches may be hard to kill, but there's an easy way to help keep them clear of your kitchen - Cleanliness!
A roach won't just survive in unsanitary conditions but actually enjoys it. Its heightened senses mean it actually relishes rotting food.
So, store food in airtight containers, cover trash bins, and keep your basement dry. It might also be smart to plug holes in your walls, unused electrical outlets, and especially drains since - get this - roaches can use your plumbing to climb from sewers to your bathroom sink.

Yep! It's like they evolve and get immune to things! I absolutely hate roaches, man! They're impossible to get rid of and the ones I've had before had no fear at all! The most ballsy and brave roaches ever! Usually roaches run for their life, but these didn't care one bit for their safety and would be risk takers for stuff! Crazy stuff, man!

At my local hardware store, the garbage bins had small roaches, I once pour Clorox and saw all of them crawling out at the same time. A few days later, I tried a roach killer with boric acid, it took three days for all of them to die, but now I haven't seen a single one again. Maybe the war against roaches is unwinnable, but we need to keep fighting them!

My landlord tried to convince me they were beetles. I told her that I wasn't comfortable having beetles showing up in my kitchen and living room late at night. Pest control comes by every 4 months to spray the property. I will never forget the joy and disgust after that first visit.
My roommate and I counted 30 dead roaches in the backyard, 10 dead ones inside, and over 50 in the basement. Now I see maybe 2-3 dead ones in total after every visit.

Scary roach story.....One time, I was sitting in my living room when I noticed a HUGE roach on the wall....I was PETRIFIED. I could not get to the door (I was going to go outside until my husband got home) I have a bad fear of roaches. I decided to make my move.
I dashed past it, and it reacted by unfolding these paper like wings and FLEW right at me. It was as if he KNEW I was scared and was trying to terrorize me. I ran down the hallway and toward the bathroom (thinking a turn into another room would throw him off)....OH no....This monster followed me, still flying and made a hard turn into the bathroom!!!!
I jumped in the shower and closed the curtain....and this thing started flying into the shower curtain over and over. Just crashing into it, he wanted to get on me so badly. I stayed in the shower for over an hour in a fetal position, until my husband came home. We searched the whole house but he was hiding. I could not sleep for nights!!! It was really traumatizing! TRUE STORY.

I was just chilling drinking milo in my kitchen one night, and i see the devil right in front of my eye flying around… I had to get my chair to fight back against these spawn of the devil… i couldn’t open a door as it was too far and the roach was in the middle, and my only hope was it would stop terrorizing me while i fought back. Thankfully it didn’t go for my drink, I finished it, went back to the bed full in the stomach and full of fear…. In a pretty short space, it was hard to just dash past such a thing in the very middle… i wouldn’t even dare go out that night to pee…

I lived for a few years in a college dorm that was seriously infested with cockroaches. It was manageable during most of the year but before vacations when most other guys would go home earlier, all the cockroaches would migrate towards the few rooms that still had human inhabitants. I had to get used to feel them crawling on my face while in bed, it's a slightly cold feeling.
A funny event with them was when a colleague used my microwave but didn't care to clean it or at least close the lid and two days later the same guy decided to use it again to heat his soup. He saw some weird smelling smoke when opening the lid and said that his soup tasted like that smoke a bit but was good. He threw up when he saw the burnt cockroaches in the oven.
The most funny was when we found some poison that actually worked against them, some neurotoxin. The second day after applying it, hundreds of roaches with lost sense of direction and no fear would walk all over the room in broad daylight, it scared one of my roommates badly to wake up with that sight, which woke me up, it was a weird sight. Third day they were all gone and it took a year until I saw another cockroach in that room and even that one probably got lost somehow.

I wish this had gone into more details about evolution. We get that these are the genes that currently help it survive, but why were those genes selected for in this insect rather than others? What were the factors of its original environment that pushed it to evolve such incredible adaptations, and what originally kept it contained when it evolved such incredible adaptations? Most cockroaches are naturally found in caves or leaf litter, but don't have nearly as many chemical receptors as this species, so why this species in particular? It's like only half the story is here 🙄

  • @ameliawilder28

The ones that fly are the worst. And when cockroaches jump too is frightening. I only experienced seeing them when I was little at a school. Never saw one again and I'm so glad. I remember walking down the hall and I spotted a cockroach scurrying and I kept watching it as it entered into a classroom. Probably a good minute later I heard screaming from that class.

When I was a kid, when the exterminator came, the drawers and cabinets were opened and we left for hours. Roaches were dead everywhere. The chemicals used don’t kill like that today.

    • @pantherzone2008
      @pantherzone2008 Год назад

They’re immune to it today. It is now worthless to get exterminator to get rid of the infestation unless you want to spend thousands of dollars to have them come daily to perform those infestation jobs.

      Sees gigantic wolf spider
      Gets glass jar
      Gigantic wolf spider disappears
Shrug, go back to whatever I was doing
You just have to realize that there's nearly no chance they will go near you.
They hid because they want to get away from you.
Also, that wolf spider will eat the real pests-- the ones that put the holes in your clothes.
I rather appreciate that part of the deal.

Hugh Mungus No they're not, a species of horned dung beetle takes the title for world's strongest insect. The beetle, called Onthophagus Taurus, was found to be able to pull a whopping 1,141 times its own body weight, which is the equivalent of a 150-pound (70 kilogram) person lifting six full double-decker buses.

moral of the story; don’t bother burning your house down when you see a roach, they’ll find a way to get out safely one way or another

    • @pantherzone2008
      @pantherzone2008 Год назад

Demolition is effective against roaches. Roaches live underground so it has to dig to clean up the site and rebuild the building to make sure roaches aren’t there anymore. Fire won’t help because they survive without a scratch, not even a burn. It’s a protective shells that protects them from death from fires.
