Part of what makes live shows so exciting is singing along with the music makers, the dreamers of the dream! It's such a sense of unity (although I agree about excessive shouting & screaming over the songs)
if you are looking for excitements, go to see the jungle or seek for amusement-parks, if you want to sing along with others, have a visit in the church, join the scouts or a chorus in the proximity - but don't annoy people, who paid a lot of money to see their stars and hear their music with your silly blubbering ...feel free to do it afterwards
Okay, so if you've ever had the pleasure of seeing this band live, you would know that this song is one of the most epic singalongs you could hope to hear from them. The energy between the band and the crowd during this one is always amazing to the point of being surreal, and the crowd singing (ESPECIALLY during the "rain down" section) is fucking mind-blowing. So "pfoahh" to you, learn to appreciate a good crowd at an epic show. While I agree that crowd singing is not always appropriate, this just happens to be one instance where it absolutely is.
RH expects and encourages singalongs on some songs. You can tell Thom is enjoying it. It's like going to see The National and not singing along to Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks. It's a joy to be at one with your favorite band like this, knowing the song so well. Stay home and listen to the records.

pfoahh, how I hate, when people in the auditorium sing along and shouting around, while somebody is performing on stage

how pretentious. maybe you should attend an orchestra performance if you don't want to hear a crowd.
