This video was awesome! Funny as hell!!! I've been researching astrophotography for about a month now. I definitely want to pull the trigger on the Celestron 9.25 Edge. I'm gonna take it slow and see if I can even manage this stuff on a small scale with my DSLR and one of those small star trackers first. I'm lucky enough to live in AZ and have been up to the Starizona store on the weekend to nerd out with all astro guys up there in the evening as they are taking pictures (data!). Your videos really stand out from the crowd. Keep it going.
Almost got lucky to catch the ISS transiting a full moon by accident. I was shooting the moon for a HDR project and stopped taking pictures to adjust my focus a bit. That when I seen it through live view. I was in shock followed by extreme disappointment.
Was that your kid that said "I think it's gonna land on the moon daddy"?!!! That was the most adorable thing I have ever heard! OMG I just want to squeeze him! Brought me back to the absolute WONDER of being a kid. Priceless

Great video- and great that you don't waste time on deniers. It is too easy for them to say something controversial to get attention to bring thinking people down to their uninformed level. PS - the music is cool, but have to pull it down each time it comes up relative to your video as I am running large speakers with some decent bass. Impressive work on the photog and helping me a lot as a novice.

Don't try to convince the obstinate flat earthers. They will try to find an excuse. There is so much overwhelming evidence that the ISS is just an additional bonus. Great video and outstanding transit images. You make it look easy but we know its definitely not. Big thumbs up.

I captured a satellite by accident while making a video of a small area of the moon. It was in only 3 frames and was blurry, but it was pretty cool. I want to try to capture some geostationary satellites against the star trails next.

Thanks! And very cool. There are some smaller targets like Hubble but they are really tiny and basically unresolvable. The ISS is like a couple of football fields which helps :) Geo stationary trails are fun to catch!
Dylan O'Donnell quick question! I have a Celestron 8” edge HD on an AVX mount. Is the fast Star adaptor worth the $$$? I am new to astrophotography and have a long way to go before I upgrade, but I want to make sure I drool over the right toys!
IB Hunter at that focal length the bigger nebulas will look great and will be super easy to do. I’d actually recommend f2 imaging for beginners because it’s so fast and rewarding and forgiving of rough guiding or unguided shots :)

I noted your comment on DSLR video and not to use it. I have a Canon 5D mk4 and as far as I know in M mode I can set the exposure time independently to as low as 1/4000 for most frame rates including 4K. I must add this is all new to me and I don’t have a telescope (as yet) so I’m thinking about doing this. Do you think I could use video then with my camera ? Thanks. I've been trying to get the iss with my 650mm hand held, I've been shooting it at 800 with iso at 6400. It still looks like a glowing blob even though I manged to stop it. I'll try the 1600 sp and bring the ISO down. Your moon photos are cool, I'm going to try that seeing as its easier to focus on the moon.

@@DylanODonnell Thanks for asking. I shot between 1/1600 and 1/4000 with an iso of 1600 and it was lot better. I could actually make out a shape this time instead of blob. I'm using a sigma 150mm to 600m lens on a canon t7i crop camera. I did shoot as high as 1/4000 of a second which didn't really improve things much. I may have to work on my focus or try adding some aperture in. However, to see anything I have to crop heavily in light room because the station's only about 10 to 15 pixels wide at the most with this lens. Without the cropping it's a dot on a normal frame. It's really surprising how bright that thing is.

Would capturing the transition with 1080p 120fps be better or wors than your results, same scope, same place and same conditions
Depends if the video lets you set those 1/120 intervals to an actual exposure of 1/1600 .. most cameras don’t !

Great video Dylan. Already checked calsky.com and it seems there are a couple of passes coming soon to an area near me. Do you have to be exactly where calsky.com says or can you see it if you are nearby? In the NWT, Canada, there is a lot of wilderness and very little access. Thanks again.
Hey thanks Todd! Calsky maps show the "centerline" which is where the ISS will appear to pass the center of the moon, but the distance away from these will vary depending on where you are on the earth.. but yes you can be a fair way away from the center line and still see a transit. I can't confirm exactly but I'd suggest up to a km at least.

Question: i have been thinking of upgrading my ota from a celestron 6" sct to the 8" edge HD is it worth the extra $500 over the standard 8"ct.... sct ??

Haha thanks James! I'm def happy with being "just a guy" :) Glad you enjoyed the video! I would recommend saving up for the jump to the 9.25" Edge HD .. it's such a versatile OTA that can have many different focal lengths depending on the reducers / magnifiers you use but is not as unwieldily or expensive than the bigger scopes. I bought one after seeing that Chris Hadfield (the astronaut in this video) installed one on the ISS. If it's good enough for NASA .... :)
thanks for reply dylan i was thinking of getting the 9.25 but i will have to upgrade the mount and tripod as well i was planning on doing that anyway but now ill save for the cgx as well ...ill get the combo deal (sounds like some muck-donalds meal deal lol) ota and mount my plan was 8" ota then mount at a later time but the combo would be cheaper

Dylan, I realize you said avoid the temptation of trying video but what about shooting manually 120fps 4K 10-bit video at 1/1600th on an A7SIII? Would I still be better off relying on burst photo mode at 10fps? I could also shoot 4K 60fps RAW video, but just not sure what I should try and don't want to waste an opportunity.
As long as you can set the videos manual frame exposure to 1/1600 you’ll succeed :)
So ill shoot the ISS tomorrow and i was thinking, at 1/2000 shutter speed at what iso should i shoot it? 400?800?
Depends on your camera but doesn’t hurt to bump it up.

It would be harder but maybe, yes :) You only get 1 second to try! "At full resolution, the P900 can shoot 7fps and you get a 7-frame burst before the buffer fills."

Hi man i tried yesterday with zwo asi 224mc.... And ir cut filter thru celestron130slt.... I dont know how to focus right before :) i focused at jupiter.... I used 3xbarlow....jupiter was sharp.... But i pointed right at iss... Result is blur.... Better focus at stars before? Instead planets?

I’m not a so called “flat earther”, and not particularly into the subject. Just a regular guy watching random videos on youtube when I am bored. But one thing I can’t help but notice, in many space related videos (even saw something similar on a national tv) - is why is there such a strong need to constantly prove and point out that the earth is not flat?

What should be the minimum focal length for shooting the ISS? I've got a 130SLT but with a 2x barlow, it's only 1300mm. Will this be remotely enough?

Oh and by the way I caught something a few weeks back. I was doing 45s exposure with my dslr. This thing rolled through 5 frames so that’s 45s then another 47s process + 5 frames. Any clue what it was. Only see it the next day when I was going through my light frames. And was like wtf is that.

I think this is a pretty good video, but the comment about video is incorrect. Some mirrorless cameras (especially m4/3 like Panasonic and Olympus) have capabilities that make this pretty easy. 4K video capture and high shutter speeds make video a viable proposition, and some of these cameras will do 6K photos at 30fps. You're right, mirrorless cameras with these specs will let you hit those shutter speeds during video! But I was talking about DSLRs specifically at that point and mention that generally only the expensive ones let you do this :)
Mirrorless is overrated.

Chip is a bit small I think so you'd need to really make sure the transit occurs in your FOV but otherwise it's fine :)

I think that is doable but harder since the Hubble is a bit further away (higher orbit) and is smaller than the ISS. But it is a good challenge to see what's possible, for sure.
I've been able to image the ISS many times before but only recently have I been using a new 2x Barlow lens. Here is my image: i.imgur.com/ylcudis.png

@@blakenorman4822 That size of a football field is one giant reflective mirror covered in solar cells. That can still see the sun. Ever seen the sun shinning off the bottom of an airplane after dusk. It stands out like the moon itself.
