- In Bukovina, a northern region of Romania, the Easter tradition of dyeing eggs has been elevated into an art form. Filmmaker Titus-Armand Napirlica along with production company Jungles in Paris profiles the beautiful work of Elena Craciunescu in The Egg Painter. Craciunescu is one of a dozen egg painters in the small village of Ciocăneşti. The town's buildings feature elaborate motifs, which are reflected in the decorated eggs. Using a process similar to batik, Craciunescu uses an iron-tipped stick, called a kishitze, to apply a wax design onto a clean and drained egg. She then dips the egg into a dye bath and repeats the process of "painting" with wax and submerging it into other dyes to create a layering effect. The wax acts as a shield between each dye bath, allowing the egg to retain color from the previous dip. In the final stage the egg is held up to a heat source that melts the wax and leaves behind a stunning pattern.

We had same technique here in Indonesia, but on fabric! It's called "batik". It is amazing how we are connected somehow by traditional art!
Im from Indonesia too! I do those for a living!
+Nur Balqish Qaisarah shahrizal hebat banget keren keren! Tetep semangat mbak, sambil cari duit melestarikan budaya indonesia!
We are one!
🙌🏻💛
amazing! i would like to learn more about it!
Hi! Im a malaysian can we share this kind of beutiful art because we share the same culture!
Our little family LOVES to paint eggs in this fashion every Easter. It’s a long process but so worth it and we have many eggs to look at from the years before. Beautiful family tradition and art.
I have a feeling this art form will grow in popularity worldwide this Easter.
Greetings from the US, Romanian folk art, whether it's Easter eggs, embroideries, wood carvings, pottery/ceramics = super-great eye candy. Traiasca Romania!!!! THANK YOU, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC =)
The egg looks amazing and making 500-700 egg art per years must be really hard work!
I learned how to do this as a child, and while my design skills were never very good, I did learn the technique. It's very rewarding to see all the layers of wax melted off and finally see the finished product.
I just can't figure out what she's using as a tool - here in the Balkan there is a small reservoir for the wax, but she seems to be dipping it and somehow it picks up enough wax without soaking it in?? I'm so confused!
I have long admired this art form and this was just a beautiful short film. The lady is such a joy to watch, you can see the happiness this brings her and her eggs are just beautiful! Thank you for bringing this to us!
The process it takes to create this beautiful art is truly amazing!
My art teacher did this with us in grade school, for Easter. I always remembered how fun it was, and how much I loved the flame of the candle near me while I worked, and the smell of the wax melting. I bought all the stuff to do it this year at my house, 30 years later....
Damn, that must take a lot of patience. Kudos to her. Really beautiful art.
Absolutely gorgeous! Beautiful designs! 🇷🇴 🇨🇦 🇺🇦
This is the most beautiful art I've ever seen, my mom says art with only colorful lines is beatiful, that is because she has never seen this
So carefully crafted, just a beautiful result ... this woman is so talented, it's wonderful she does this and her mind is freed of all other thoughts, truly like a Zen meditation
I am proud of our traditions
Mihai Muresanu 🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴

watching her painting the eggs that good made my mood better..
Just beautiful! I have a basket full of these made out of wood that my Grandmother brought back to us here in the us from Poland
How does she keep her lines so straight?!
At first I thought wow what amazing detail but then once they melted off the wax... Amazing. Very very cool!
This is BEAUTIFUL! You are so talented! Getting one of your eggs is now in my bucket list!!
Oh my god, these painted eggs are so beautiful! I'd love to try this myself! I may try it next Easter. (Haha it won't look half as good as hers, but I like to do these kind of things a lot so this may be a fun thing to do for me ~)

Absolutely gorgeous! I’m also happy to hear that they have many younger people who have already learned these beautiful traditions, in order to keep it alive!! I have totally been in love with these eggs, since I first saw them over 50 years ago! And I recently saw a few in person & I was so excited - because they are such beautiful works of arts!!
i need to ask my grandmother if she knows a relative that can paint such beautiful eggs😊
Your mastery of the batik/wax resist method inspires me to improve. Thank you for sharing your artistry with the filmmaker and RUclips. What a wonderfully made film, too.
One of my neighbors introduced me to the idea of Pysanky and it's absolutely beautiful... not just the eggs, but the patience it takes to make one
Wow it takes a lot of patience to make one! amazing indeed!!

There stunning!! Does she sale them?!!!
This is Ukrainian traditional form of art, though I believe that other Slavic nations do something similar. In Ukraine we call those painted eggs "pysanka". The oldest Pysanka found in Ukraine is 950 years old. Women make them before Easter but there are a lot of professional artists as well. We also have a whole Pysanka museum!) every region in Ukraine has traditional patterns.
The motifs painted on the eggs are specific to the romanian culture, they are also found on the romanian blouse (ia). As for the custom of painting eggs it dates back to ancient Persia
Romana Unbelievable how little we know of one-another’s country, yet so close. We have the same traditions & customs, culture and symbolism. We have museums, ceramics and what not in common...
Przepiękne
Doamne maica domnului

ARTA DE ROMANIA.
Si in alte parti in Romania (in Transilvania de exemplu) se incondeiaza oua de pasti. Poate la Ciocanesti in Bucovina este o traditie veche si generalizata, daca si casele si le picteaza atat de frumos.
I want to buy that if I could have
Wow
Bucovyna is a region between the Dnister river and the Karpathians and today part of its territory is Ukraine and part is Romania.
Bucovina is a name given be the Austrians when they extended their Empire in the XVIIth century when they conquered a part of the north of the Romanian province named Moldova. Part of Moldova was taken by the Soviet Empire at the end of the second World War. But tis is a Romanian teritory, under ocupation part of it.
How do they empty it of its content without breaking it? Through the hole in the bottom?
Omg her house is an egg?
👍👍👍
hai romania!
Yes, Romania is a nice country with nice and talented people with long and nice folk traditions
Imagine all the eggs blow up with homunkulas things
Show
@Joel Vihaan sounds like some bs.
😊😊
What do they do with the egg after they paint it ???
Can someone tell me where I can purchase these eggs?
Can't unless you're in Romania to buy them in person. The eggs are too delicate to ship.
There is a source in the US. I'll have to look it up.
You can find them anywhere in the world you have a population of ethnic Ukrainians. Pennsylvania, for sure. The local ladies make them every year. I'm sure they can be shipped from Europe, as well. Your question is two years old, I hope you've acquired at least one.
The Valheim community is coming.
OMG!
Woah! Showcasing something mildly Western. Well, 7 years ago.... okay.
How do we purchase these eggs?
Can I buy one
Egg 🥚
FIrST, really cool though
It really ticks me off that this National Geographic film starts off with a big whopping error! Pysanky are not painted. Painting has nothing to do with it. It's a batik process and anyone who knows anything about this knows that you"write" the design and dye the egg.
