I have a theory: So, Alexei said that they had so many keys in Russia. Then there's the machine that tried to open the gate. When Joyce stops it, Hopper isn't there anymore. But, how could he appear in Russia that quickly? Well, guess what. There's the movie Back to the Future. So maybe the machine could be a teleporter or a teleporter to the future. Also, in the little scene at the last episode, they say ''No, not the American''. But as in Back to the Future they go to the past... *Maybe Hopper has been in a Russian cell before?*
Well, I actually have a theory about this. When you last see Hopper is from the view of the control room where Joyce is at before she turns the keys. She also closes her eyes, so she doesn't see anything (and neither do we). The next thing we see is the machine from the the other side, but Hopper isn't standing by it anymore and the machine blows up. If you look at that scene, there is a ladder that goes down one more level. I am presuming he goes down that ladder which may lead to another way out. He may have been captured by Russians and taken out another exit before the US military shows up. There is also a theory that in the closing sequence of season three where the guards say "no, not the American" is actually not Hopper, but the original scientist (the one Eleven calls Papa). Remember, in season 2 when 11 and her "sister" were hunting down the people that did these acts against them, the one man says "Papa" is alive and not dead as 11 thinks. The theory goes that the Russians needed help in getting the gate open they might have gotten ahold of his research and kidnapped him.

I can just imagine Hopper giving El his daughter’s blue hair tie and saying something like, “ this belonged to my daughter, and for a long time I held on to it, like a piece of her was still with me, but I realize she’s gone and you’re here now, so I hope when you wear this you think of me and remember that we will always be connected, no matter what happens. “ 😭
I don’t know if this counts as a Season three Easter egg, but if you look closely in the first episode of season one, you can see that the image on Mr. Wheeler’s TV looks eerily similar to when Billy gets hurt in his car on his way to meet Mrs. Wheeler in season three.
What I really love about the hair tie is I think, as far as I can remember, it was the hair tie that Hopper was playing whenever he's nervous while talking to someone or apologizing to someone (feel free to correct me I don't really remember it that much)
