I gotta say, I still think one of the best moments of this entire show is Season 1 Steve thinking he's in a John Hughes movie and finding out he's in a John Carpenter movie.
I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think Steve gets the happy ending. He comes to life when dealing with the Upside Down but outside of that, he doesn't seem to have any real purpose in life. Subtle misdirection with the Nancy, Jonathan love triangle aside, his entire arc has positioned him as the protector of the group, makes sense he'll be the one to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect them when the time comes.
If this fine specimen of a gentleman does not end up with Nancy in Season 5, I will be very upset. He has gone through too significant of a character development to not deserve Nancy.
