Lest we forget, this song was written by Al Kooper and appeared on the first Blood, Sweat & Tears album, Child is Father To The Man, released February 1968. Donny Hathaway covered it in 1973, but was not the original. Amy brings the song to life wonderfully.

I think y’all are both right tbh... she always suffered from insecurities which I think just got worse when every man she loved did her wrong she fed into those insecurities she had.. there was an interview she had talking about her hair and why she would have it high at times and she states “the higher her bump was that day, was a sign to show how insecure she was that day....” that really stuck to me because she was basically telling her audience in subtle signs but I think she didn’t want to seem attention seeking so she did little things like that for maybe one day someone would notice?
