I really would prefer an SQ8 (best looking suv ever) but justifying 150k + is a hard task. We are not all multi millionaires from Double Bay. I’ll probably end up buying a used SQ7 (for under 100k) just because it’s a bit cheaper.. but I’m worried I’ll spend my whole time wishing I had the SQ8.
Okay, why don’t you have more viewers and subs. Your voice is very engaging, the b-rolls are stunning and the review was genuine. Honestly, I’m gonna subscribe :)
You could blow me down with a feather on that one, Georg. It doesn't make sense to me! The platform (and engine) is shared, so that should be fairly equal -- then the SQ7 just has more metal, more glass, and more content inside. It should be heavier! I've looked at weights for these two across the 'net and figures differ. I think the only way to solve it is to weigh them ourselves, which I will look into doing it.
Those weight indications differ as you can choose between a five- and a seven seater. In your case the car should weigh arround 2405kg, as it is the seven seater version. Still about 35 kilos lighter than the SQ8.
I LOVE your aerial and outside videos (mainly with drones) which both change the taste of the review and show the beauties of your chosen filming locations as well! Thank you.
Now that BMW has dropped the M50d, neither cars have a direct competitor. SQ8 would be my selfish choice, purely on its design. Great review, thanks Tom!
Totally agree, driven both with dynamic package, the sq7 handles better, just bit more planted to my surprise. Suppose they need to held back the sq8 somewhat so it doesn’t take too much shine off the upcoming rsq8, huge low down torque in the sq7/sq8 steals it away from the rsq8 in everyday driving.
Technically speaking, SQ8 is heavier than the SQ7. Driving both, they’re very similar. If you like a sportier version of an SUV, go the SQ8. If you want more size practicality, go the SQ7. Other than that, both drive very similar (SQ8 steering may be more stiffer)
As I mentioned to another commenter, I think we need to weigh them ourselves, because it seems very unlikely that would be the case - smaller car, less glass, less metal, far less content inside, largely the same mechanicals. That's not a formula for a heavier car.
I think the changes to the Q5 will be similar in scope to the changes to the A4 and A5 - nothing major outside, but I expect the interior to (sadly) ditch the rotary MMI control and adopt a single touchscreen. Check out the interior of the 2020 A4 to see what I mean.
Great review as always. The country roads on which you test being Bayview Sydney! The ultimate school bus must be the new Maserati Levante Trofeo. What a test that will be.
Nice video, the SQ8 looks nice and sharp. Audi probably leading the way for cool lights these days apart from possibly BMWs cool new laser options. PS how good does Sydney look in Autumn 👍🏻😎
The only way to make an SUV uglier - turn it into a fake coupe. Except this Audi. Actually looks nicer than the standard one. I agree Tom - the Merc and BMW versions are not as nice, but I'd go further and say they are an eyesore.
LOLOL At the Price these costs, if I found cheaper plastic ANYWHERE on the door cards I would look at the dealer and say.. “Tell your bean counters they lost a sale”
Siquan Wu Maybe, I never drove your roads (I am a Dutchie 🙂🇳🇱) but like Tom says, it would be more fair to the Audi to do that test with the RSQ8 petrol. It’s already on market here, that thing goes like lightning and sounds like thunder! 😎👍🏻😍
I think the target market differs slightly between them. SQ7’s certainly a family buyer, somebody who maybe won’t be buying a second, sportier car, so it has to do it all. SQ8 I think is an older demographic who don’t need the practicality of seven seats, or perhaps it’s a second SUV in a two-SUV family. Both buyers are expected to be overwhelmingly male.
Chasing Cars I’ve never seen a hankook tyre beat a Continental, Michelin or similar in any tyre comparison. It’s simply a cost cutting exercise. I suppose the target audience for these vehicles are simply captured by the headline power/torque figures and the choice if tyres is not really a consideration. And if they were concerned about the tyre choice they wouldn’t be considering one of these wastes of space in the first place. Sorry just my humble opinion.
Honestly lord send me a Q8 and I’ll never ask for anything ever again
It's one tough, handsome looking vehicle.
Tom you deserve more subscribers
Thank you, Kieran. We are growing with your help!

Thanks very much! Prices are as follows:
SQ7 AUD $161,500 plus on-road costs
SQ8 AUD $165,500 plus on-road costs
Dynamic package: $10,900
About to post this thanks for the info.

Cool video! Although the SQ7 seems like the more chunky vehicle, it is actually lighter than the SQ8 (2395kg / 2440kg).

But to be honest, I can‘t wrap my head arround why the SQ7 is lighter than his seemingly sleeker brother.
@@georghummel5362 sq8 is wider

Thanks!
The SQ7 looks better proportioned for me plus its more practical and cheaper.
I think it makes the most sense, though they both have their advantages.
Awesome work, Tom
Many thanks!

Good observation. I think it’s a shame BMW have dropped that powerful diesel - as this video hopefully showed, they work so well!

VW Group's coupés look way better than BMW and Mercedes's. Don't @ me.
If anybody tries to argue with you I’ll have your back. I got it on me

tom baker you are the best aussie car reviewer hands down. I hope you will reach 50k soon. good luck mate.
Thank you, mate. Appreciate your support.
Two of my dream cars, tough choice!!!
They are two pretty cool beasts. I'd still go an RS6, though.
Chasing Cars yeah, RS6 is very nice!!!
Chasing Cars can’t agree more
Sq7 actually looks better imo
Nice review keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
very good review! any idea what would the new SQ5 look like Tom?
I think the changes to the Q5 will be similar in scope to the changes to the A4 and A5 - nothing major outside, but I expect the interior to (sadly) ditch the rotary MMI control and adopt a single touchscreen. Check out the interior of the 2020 A4 to see what I mean.
Can’t afford but love Audi
Prefer the SQ8 but I’d be rapt with either and agree the dynamics package is highly desirable
SQ8 has the looks, for sure.
I’m buying a 2020 sq7 abt widebody, when will they come to Australia
Great review as always. The country roads on which you test being Bayview Sydney! The ultimate school bus must be the new Maserati Levante Trofeo. What a test that will be.
Paul Kacirek May break down on the way to school causing grumpy kids screaming at the back, so no thanks. Stay with MBA or better with Lexus.
Thanks, Paul! Glad you enjoyed the shots of Bayview.
You really need to mention prices in your videos.
Great video, deciding between the two right now and it’s a tough one, third row and 10k vs a sharper looking beast...
Which one did you go for?
Nice video, the SQ8 looks nice and sharp. Audi probably leading the way for cool lights these days apart from possibly BMWs cool new laser options.

The SQ8 is quite the handsome vehicle.
The only way to make an SUV uglier - turn it into a fake coupe. Except this Audi. Actually looks nicer than the standard one.
I agree Tom - the Merc and BMW versions are not as nice, but I'd go further and say they are an eyesore.
Hope Benz and BMW are taking notes.

At least the SQ8 has that nice nappa leather on the doors. Agree that it is an important touch!
I remember a lot of ruckus in Germany about quality issues with the diesel V6 and V8 engines. How troublesome are these here?
I had a browse about SQ7 TDI reliability issues and didn't get many hits, but if anybody has an experience they'd like to share, I encourage that.
Nice review - how about a comparison for SQ7 and RS Q7
Please do a comparison test between SQ8, X6M and upcoming new GLE 63S coupe. That will be fun.
Siquan Wu the Audi diesel will get eaten alive by the BMW and the Mercedes. Still it is by far the most beautiful in it’s class.
Sounds fun but would be fairer to wait for the petrol V8 RSQ8.
Tinus Tussengas different direction, but in Our Aussie roads, they probably as fast as.
Chasing Cars or you can borrow an Urus to do the comparison test, Tom, do it.
Is this new SQ7 listed on our website? Also I think each of these now cost over $200k.
Prices are $161k for the SQ7 and $165k for the SQ8, plus on-road costs.
I dislike when the tailgate is up it looks like the inner side of tail lights off an older model. Mmm early 2000 rs6 wagon tail lights.
The RS6s from that era were lovely, it's true.
What hankook tires are those?
Ventus S1 evo2 measuring 285/35 R22 at all four corners.
Tom. What would be the 'target demographic?'
I think the target market differs slightly between them. SQ7’s certainly a family buyer, somebody who maybe won’t be buying a second, sportier car, so it has to do it all. Please Sq7 vs X5 m50d
Vs gle
Genuine question: do you guys think the Q7 compares to an X5/GLE? Or the X7/GLS?
@@chasingcars X5 GLE for me because of almost similar pricing
@@chasingcars X5 and GLE because of pricing, spec and quality of interior.
I take both
You could alternate.
The next time yall compare two cars please consider parking them at a angle and not so close together.
Will keep that in mind.
Ok so is the regular q7 bigger than regular q8
Yep - the SQ7 is 5.07m long while the SQ8 is 4.99m long.
Sq8 for me
Fair enough, Damon! Love the looks of the SQ8.
Tbh I prefer the old V12 diesel on the old SQ7
Ryan Angkasa there was no sq7 just normal q7
The Q7 V12 TDI was immensely cool. Would love to drive one some day.
Sq8 all the way
Love the look of the rear end of the SQ8.
Actually the SQ7 is lighter and has better fuel economy this guy didn't read the specs
Wrong facts, the sq8 is 40 something kg heavier than the sq7. For anyone this affects, means mpg is better in sq7
Weird seeing you wear a winter coat as we are 2 months into spring here.
Seasons, hey!
Surprised that they fit crappy Hankook tyres to the Audi’s now.
These Hankooks are anything but crappy

Bigger is better!?
Usually not, but in this case, yes!
