  • In this episode, Parakala speaks about the important findings of the PEW Report on Religion in India and explores what could be their implications for our polity. He teases out the not so very obvious political messages those findings contain. And examine what do they tell us about the foundations of the present regime's political power. He also tries to explore what they might portend for the future of the socio political fabric of our country.

I understand your analysis but as a South Indian, I always feel bullied by the brawn and muscle power of the North. Religion is an individual's personal relationship with the Almighty and it shouldn't be used to disintegrate people. In the little place I live in, we treat people as people and not by their religious views. We live and let others live

Most European countries have a state religion, that too a specific denomination.
Religious diversity and harmony in India will exist only as long as Hindus are in overwhelming majority.

Masterly analysis, and very disturbing for a South Indian like me.
The irony is that the Southern States are actually financing these Hindu, Hindi (mostly BIMARU) states. The sharing of taxes in this way has ensured that in the BIMARU states development is not an important political message.

The tragedy of our times is that the fusion of "Hindu-Hindi-BJP' has brainwashed large sections of upper caste Hindus in Cowbelt, to such an extent that , they have fuelled Hyper Nationalism and not patriotism.
In this process Peninsular India jas become a tail that doesn't even wag.
    Nice analysis, Prabhakar garu.

Sir, your analysis, as always, is absolutely true and astoundingly brilliant. As an educated Indian who deeply loves her country (and not belonging to the Hindu - Hindi group), I feel very disturbed and saddened by the present political situation in India. Having had many opportunities to settle in a more affluent country, I chose to live in my motherland and I have brought up my children with the same sentiments. Do I need to be a Hindu and speak Hindi to prove my patriotism?
Democracy is a wonderful thing, but it can be a dangerous tool in the hands of the cunning and manipulative who use it to sway the vast majority of ill-informed, ignorant and gullible people.
Sir, I feel sad that the vast majority who need to hear your message cannot even understand the depth and clarity of your analysis. Many who understand will choose to deny or disagree, but I pray it will reach those who truly love our motherland. Those who ardently believe in what many of us grew up pledging day after day...'India is my country. All Indians are my brothers and sisters....'

Absolutely breath taking clarity - so much packed in some 21 minutes is incredible. One can read history of India politics, recent past and future in all the points that you are highlighting. "Broadcast vs Narrow cast" - it says it all....We are at a point of time for history to record why technology did not advance kindness in human beings because it only advanced one kind of human beings, at least politically speaking. The parable is SO appropriately placed. May we feed the source that will feed kindness and unity in us...if there is 'God', the next couple of years would be the time to help a nation before it cracks and crumbles under the current mindset. Superbly analysed sir. Which one to feed? Well, the one which is going to obey, feed and fatten me! There is no intent on being an evangel. Part of the intent, or urge, has been created on the premise that after a long period of ‘outsider’ domination the time has come to dominate all around you and do it brutally. Being divisive in outlook and attitude is no measure of superiority. The mind only follows what the heart speaks to it. It is a dangerous proposition any way you look at it.

Before accusing others ,do some research. People like you live in a make believe world of Hinduism.
"The killing of Shambuka appears in the Valmiki Ramayana, Book 7, the 'Uttarakanda' [Final Chapter], sargas 73-76. Three scene-setting sargas are paraphrased, and then the crucial one is presented in full:
      (73) When Rama is reigning as a virtuous king, a humble aged Brahmin comes to him, weeping, with his dead son in his arms. He says that Rama must have committed some sin, or else his son would not have died. (74) The sage Narada explains to Rama that a Shudra is practicing penances, and this is the cause of the child's death. (75) Rama goes on a tour of inspection in his flying chariot, and finds an ascetic doing austerities, and asks who he is.
"(76) Hearing the [inquiring] words of Rama of imperishable exploits, that ascetic, his head still hanging downwards [as part of his austerities] answered:- 'O Rama, I was born of a Shudra alliance and I am performing this rigorous penance in order to acquire the status of a God in this body. I am not telling a lie, O Rama, I wish to attain the Celestial Region. Know that I am a Shudra and my name is Shambuka.' As he was yet speaking, Raghava [Rama], drawing his brilliant and stainless sword from its scabbard, cut off his head. The Shudra being slain, all the Gods and their leaders with Agni's followers, cried out, 'Well done! Well done!' overwhelming Rama with praise, and a rain of celestial flowers of divine fragrance fell on all sides, scattered by Vayu. In their supreme satisfaction, the Gods said to that hero, Rama:- 'Thou hast protected the interests of the Gods, O Highly Intelligent Prince, now ask a boon, O beloved Offspring of Raghu, Destroyer of Thy Foes. By thy grace, this Shudra will not be able to attain heaven!'" (583-84).
Of course, I can predict your reply!

Sir, In my mind, the Hindu-Muslim divide is an old tune. There are new notes being added to the Hindu-Hindi-BJP narrative, driving deeper cracks in our society. Specific targets are:
    1. LGBTQ community cannot be Hindu
    2. Beef eaters are not Hindus, never mind that the characters in the Mahabharata were meat eaters.
    3. Those who don't visit Temples are non Hindus
    4. Those who don't pray to Lord Ram are not Hindus.
5 Agnostics and Atheists are non Hindus
These opinions ought to have found their way into the Survey, They would have revealed the extent of the penetration of this ideology in our social fabric and public life.

Very well said. I have come to fear these things too. In my opinion in coming years many people will be deemed as 'not hindu enough'.
I think societies/religious grouping keep going through this cycles of orthodox-liberla-orthodox-liberal.

A remarkable analysis and conclusions. A few take aways and a question. Q first. Are you saying, it's only the accuracy of sampling that can predict accuracy of results? Because people give politically correct answers? Takeaway: New or big data. True picture. Narrowcast can turn the tables regardless of broadcast. The midriff of the country under hypnotic state of the triad Hindu-Hindi-BJP. Sadness: Pluralistic liberals enfeebled. Thanks a lot for insightful review of the PEW survey.

    Dear Parakala Prabakarji,
Sir, I provided the same detailed comments to both Ms. Sehgal as well(author) and others. The problem I have is the differentiated interpretation that is being provided wrt India. This is a national level study.
    www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2017/02/01/512708133/to-be-american-first-speak-english-study-says
"Among people 50 or older, 81 percent say speaking English is very important. In the 18-34 group, only 58 percent say the same. Those who have gone only as far as high school are more likely (79 percent) than those with college degrees (59 percent) to hold that opinion. The figures for white evangelical Protestants and the religiously unaffiliated are striking, with 84 percent of the former"..."They all connect English and citizenship. About 7 in 10 black people, Latinos and white people concur that speaking English is critical in establishing a person's American identity." But the following is ofcourse also to be noted -- "The Pew survey found that in a country where nearly 70 percent of Americans said they were Christian in 2014, people are fairly divided when it comes to connecting Christianity and American identity. A third of Americans said being Christian is "very important" to "be considered truly American," and about a third said "it is not at all important.""
    www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2015/06/23/what-makes-someone-truly-american-89-percent-say-speaking-english/
Here is a second poll -- "According to a Public Religion Research Institute poll released Tuesday, 89 percent think that for someone to be "truly American," it's "very" or "somewhat important" that they speak English (even though the United States has no official language), while 69 percent think that way about believing in God, 58 percent about being born in America and 53 percent about being Christian."
PEW is an America first and American paper. You are too intelligent and way too sophisticated to not know that systemic segregation is part of many societies including America as well. Pew should be compared with these studies in the US.
Now I do not disagree with you that Gandhian India has to set higher standards. But we are also heir to the most ancient of cultures which is facing significant erosion. Its past is being brushed aside in favor of a future that most do not see is up ahead. If the "globalist rhetoric" is to be believed which implies that "Tools for all to escape poverty and live as unhindered free citizens takes just a little political", then more people will drink the KoolAid you are offering. But no. you are not offering that KoolAid. In fact, you or the first to say that it is not on offer to the vast majority of Indians.
Being a Brahmin pollster, I wanted to also ask you to comment on Felix George's interview --
    ruclips.net/video/v8YWChsqYPQ/видео.html
How can you look the other way on this one!! When is Dr. Parakala Prabakar going to ask if this is really the Tamil equivalent of Hindi-Hindu-Hindustan much more longer in the making!!
I was watching the serial "Grahan" on Hotstar only last night. We cannot afford to be so polarized and divided. The recent past teaches us that "Sub-Nationalism" has long been as harmful if not more harmful than Nationalism. Its threat during the Bhindranwale time period left us scarred. The rise of Zia Ul Haq in Pakistan and Islamic Extremism made Kashmir an issue. Assam Accord, Punjab accord and efforts to reunite Kashmir into India and the rise of Democratic forces in Pakistan have helped reduce "Sub-Nationalism". The political side of Hindi-Hindu-Hindustan can get out of hand but it cannot be objected to. English-JudeoChristian-America is a very much present in the US.
Nationalism has to have a very inclusive ethos. It came as a pleasant surprise to many Hindus that Ram Janambhoomi is something that the majority of Muslims feel should be offered to Hindus. That said, we are seeing a new detente among communities. But not amongst the detractors both Indian and foreign who want different yardsticks for each republic.
We can have a Vasudeiva Kudumbakam in India. We can build perspectives towards that without being alarmist. I am worried that you are missing important points -- like this week's RSS SarsangChalak's message
    ruclips.net/video/hpYLlJ22YQc/видео.html
Can you please also speak about these issues I have raised in your ongoing presentations. Ardh Satya and Sampoorn Sathya are critical to addressing the ongoing situation. India I again augur can be for "Unity in Diversity" even under BJP. You have every right to challenge such a strong statement!!

While you pin pointed the modus operandi of the new assertiveness of these forces, it might not be a bad idea to also explore what needs to be done to stop those who undermine the modern idea of India.
And it might also be interesting to genuinely figure out why are educated or literate people falling for such specious narratives?
