I like my Stage, and am glad I got it.
Good demo. I actually like the fact that Mitch is not, you know Steve Vai or Eric Johnson, because this gives us an idea how the thing sounds when a mere mortal is playing.
Sweetwater demos are among the best.. I would say however that the comments about the power section (3:40) are misleading.. the comments would be correct IF this was a tube power amp, but it isnt. Those knobs simply change software parameters in the "pre-amp" to mimic the sound and reaction as if it had a tube power amp.. the power amp in this thing is a power brick with no inherent character..
Solid state is actually pretty good when they use good components. It makes the price on par with a tube amp, but it sounds good. Not better, just good.
Sean Brooks I have a Stage and I’d take it over an equivalent priced tube amp because it feels very tube-like and is so flexible. I haven’t taken any of my tube amps out for several weeks because the Stage is so fun.
Much better demo than others. LOL at how many on other demos say this is not modeling. It's modeling with DSP. It's more Katana like than Blues Cube. Boss needs to replace it's own demos with yours. Looks like a cool amp.
Great sounding amp, funky name, nextone? Reminds me of westone slm . A great amp should have a great name. Nextone... sounds like a Walmart Brand name.
I’ve noticed over the years that when ‘recording’ solid state and tube amps are very similar in tone. The beauty of tube tone is often only realized live. For me that’s enough to keep me in the glass :) Every time I bring a SS amp home to try out, hoping to be thrilled, I’m disappointed. \m/
Guaranteed... just watched this vid. Mitch does a killer detailed demo here, and really shows off how Roland completely nailed this amp series with all the features you could possibly need or want. Super psyched. Just called and pre-ordered two of the smaller ones. They will kill for a super easy tight stereo rig for, solo, duo, or trio gigs! For what it's worth, always been a huge Roland fan. Been using cubes since they were released. The original cubes were the poor man's Boogie at the time they launched, in that they had multiple gain stages and a master and still sound great to my ear. I predicted they would sell a ton of them and almost 40 years later the line is still around? Pretty impressive. I had two 100 watt original cubes running in stereo, always felt a bit funny about using them, but they worked great for me. I lost that weird feeling when I saw John Abercrombie use one on a gig and it sounded great. I talked with him for a moment about it and he had the same feeling I did, a quiet "Holy Crap... these sound amazing!" The original orange cube 20 is a personal favorite practice amp & great with effects, super flat and just sound great with any ax. I use two original cube 20's in stereo for my front room low volume practice rig. Roland does it again.
Jerry McKenzie Speaking of the Helix, anybody notice something familiar with the name Nextone? Many product LINEs will come and go, but there will always be one BOSS.
I feel like I need to go to school for this. However anyone who learns this stuff can theoretically make their own custom amp to have the exact sound they have in their head.
I love my Katana 50 for home practice, but I have to admit that it's super bright sounding (particularly on the Brown channel). I hope the Nextone has a warmer tone. That said, I have a pile of real tube amps to use so I'm not sure I need one of these.
The Nextone is pretty bright initially because the speaker isn’t broken in. Mine hasn’t yet but reports are that the amp mellows nicely once the speaker does. The Presence control can help a lot too, as does the built-in EQ sections available in the editor.
Yeah I totally agree with you. Really dumb that you can only tweak the Boss katana through a PC. This is why I've recently taken a liking to my new fender mustang GT100 as it just simply connects to any smart phone and you're set to go. The update has greatly improved the mustang as well and sound much warmer to my Katana.
Sounds decent, but this looks like Boss's take on the Blackstar ID Series (not Core, I'm talking about the original ID Series, which has been around for 6+ years) and offers way more versatility for a slightly lower price point. However the Boss computer interface and features seem to be light years ahead of the (current) ID software.
12/22/2019. Hello Sweetwater, I have heard people be worried it started fizzing and farting with high gain high volume chords. Is that true? All replies from viewers also welcome.
How loud is this? Is the 40 watt louder for example like a tube amp vs a solid state amp?? I love the katana but I’ve always wanted more out of the clean.
Hey, Josh! The loudness of this amp is actually comparable to a 40-watt tube amp, even though it's solid state. If you have any questions feel free to get in touch with me directly. Connor Smith, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1793, connor_smith@sweetwater.com
Just 4 patches to save? Limited effects? I have a Flextone II combo in my closet from 20 years ago that's more full featured than this.. I don't get it.. Sure the Nextone sounds great, but why does it have to be crippled with limited features?
Four patches? No, it comes with twelve different presets stored, and you can edit and save them. Its downside is that only one preset is in the custom channel and you can’t switch from the knobs, only from the editor. I had a Flextone II combo also and got rid of it because it was nothing like playing a real tube amp. The Nextone is a very different animal and feels very much like a tube amp. It’s “crippled” because more features cost more money and Boss had a particular section of the market the were after. I think they did a great job with it. Think about this: In a few years they will drop Katana, and I suspect the Nextone, and come out with something that incorporates even better sound along with banks of custom and editable sounds. They already know how to do the editing and banks because of the GT systems, and they know that the modelers are going to make that sort of flexibility a requirement. Sticking with the four tube types in the power section covers the basis for lots of amps, and then some A/D and D/A on a “wet” or “effects” signal path that can be blended with the normal Nextone sound, would give people the best of both worlds. I’m just imagineering but it seems quite doable.
One question regarding this amp. Is the stage loud enough to rehearse, gig with a quite heavy band (trio)? My main goal is to reduce the weight from my Hot Rod Deluxe so going for the artist makes no sense to me.
Hello! If you're coming from a Hot Rod Deluxe, then I would definitely recommend getting the Artist version of that amp. Volume and headroom will be very comparable for you. The Stage version of this amp is going to be about the same volume and headroom as a Blues Jr. sized amp. Thanks for the interest! Kevin Spunde, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1732
The Stage will keep up a good volume in a small club but it wouldn’t be punishingly loud. Mine at 20 watts does well keeping up with a Blues Jr. That same Blues Jr. with a Twin Reverb in a stereo set up had me turning up the Stage’s output to 40 watts, which still was able to be heard pretty well. The single 12” is limiting and plugging into a 2x10” or 2x12” cabinet would help move more air. Even adding another 1x12” cabinet would help. The Artist is more powerful but moving air is important as an amp with twice the speaker area is louder than the equivalent wattage with half the area.
Hi, William! Yes, that amp will use whatever settings you had before you turned it off. Thanks for your interest! Charlie Davis, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1320
Hey, Gabriel! The Nextone amplifiers have processing, so it isn't a direct solid state like the Bandits. However, I would check them out a bit more in detail as they really do sound fantastic. Let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks! Jozy Franco, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 3015
@@sweetwater Hey Jozy, appreciate the reply! I have got to try one out, and I was impressed by the clean sounds. While I will not be buying one myself, I can appreciate what it is for their target audience. Cheers again for the info! - Gabe
The amps have no modeling, they’re analog through to the speaker. There is a DSP that monitors the impedance of the speaker and adjusts how the power-amp section works, all on the fly. I think that’s how the amp gets such a good tube-like feel. It’s impressive and very different feeling from old-school solid state and even modelers. My Helix and AX-8 don’t feel as good.
@ Charliethegent and Offinthepines and for the people that replied to my post, I really didn't know that it was that serious!! The bottom line IS that when you go to but an amp YOU get what you want no matter who says what about any particular amp. Because.regardless of which amp you want you will go to your local music store and try it out and make an decision. So let's not make this be more than it really is!! But, thanks for the replies anyway. Its all a personal preference.
In this day and age, it makes more sense to use a cheap refurbished laptop, a cheap Audio interface, a used FCB1010 and used PA speakers to gig or practice on free/cheap modelling software. If anything gets stolen or broken, its cheap to replace or have a backup handy. You can backup or port your setups easily from one laptop to another. I personalty use NI Guitar RIg 5 with 2Notes Torpedo Wall of sound and a few other plugins (VC76, spaceship delay, Lexicon reverb). However, if you want a unique signature tone with an organic response customized to your taste, buy a soldering iron, a multi-meter and a tube amp kit. Build and tweak those classic amps yourself and get a few different speakers / cabs. Leave the expensive boutique amps in the shop or in the studio... rent them if when you are ready to record your hits for posterity.
Hello! We should be getting a shipment of these in here by early December, or just after the new year. I would highly recommend placing a pre-order to ensure yourself a spot in line off this next shipment we're receiving, as I cannot guarantee that we won't sell out of these before they even arrive. I was considering upgrading my Boss Katana 50 to a Boss Katana artist because I love the katana so much. Then this comes around. It seems more Suited to what I want, which is more focus on the amp sounds themselves, rather than the effects, since I have excellent effects pedals already. Is there anyone that can verify that this amp sounds as good if not better as the katana? Right now I am looking at my "wwsd" bracelet ( what would Sweetwater do?)
I'm basically in the same camp. I have a Katana 100 that I really like, but I use two of the amp sounds and reverb. Brown and lead are fun, but I've literally never used them at a gig. Better low and mid gain amp tones with an ability to hit nice American style clean tones sounds amazing to me
I say defer your decision if at all possible. I love my Katana Artist precisely because I don’t have nor want pedals. This Nextone is likely only the first in a new series. There’s so much evolution right now with amps and modeling you might see other manufacturers also introducing interesting models.
Hello! It doesn't have stereo effects, but does include delay/reverb options with a tap tempo right onboard. Thanks for reaching out! Jozy Franco, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 3015
Not that I agree with the choice but yeah you should it's important to let these companies know what products you want by voting with your dollar. It would be sad to live in a future where things like this are the only option.
Why the hell do these company’s keep putting the control knobs where you cant see them, i don’t get it . I got the katana head and i lay it on its face so i can adjust it , i’ve been playing a long time and i have never stood behind the amp. Do these people actually ever use the products they sell. Oh well another amp i wont be buying.
2 min 30 seconds and the yahda yahda yahda caved me i bet it has a 8th inch headphone jack .. yep very quiet with a les paul dbl humbucking axe what isn't quiet with a humbucker
Plug a single-coil in and if there’s EMI present the guitar is noisy. That doesn’t mean that the amp suddenly becomes noisy, it’s just amplifying a noisy guitar. At full gain and full volume every amp is noisy and hisses, some more than others. The Nextone is quieter than most.
I just got my Nextone Stage. After fiddling with it for over an hour I'm a little disappointed. I set up the lead channel the way I wanted it, and saved it by holding down the channel select switch, then I set up the clean channel (6L6 tubes) and saved it. The amp does not seem to be saving the EQ settings. I'm using EL34's for the lead with the gain at 12 noon. The lead tones in all the tube selections seemed a bit scooped and are a little raspy.even with the treble setting at zero and the middle at noon. The cleans are very nice, but again, when I switch back and forth between lead and clean my EQ isn't what I saved. The manual is pretty useless and I have not connected the amp to my computer just yet. If I don't get this figured out it's going back to the store. I had high hopes.
@NoiseFeedMusic shared EQ is yet another good reason for having returned it. Somebody is going to love the amp, but it was a poor fit for me. I had no way to test drive it and the instructions are woefully lacking. I would expect crappy documentation, or actually the lack of adequate documentation, from lesser companies, but not Boss.
And it sounds to me like you're just itching for a chance to insult someone who is just trying to help others before they make a potential mistake. Ignorance is bliss.....you must be very happy!
The channel select switch doesn’t save the settings, it switches to the custom preset defined by the editor and saved to the amp. The docs for the amp and editor both say this: “[CH SELECT] button * Switches between the CLEAN channel and the LEAD channel. Hold down this button for one second or longer to select CUSTOM mode. In CUSTOM mode, sound settings can be made only using the dedicated software.” and: “Nextone Editor is editor software that lets you create your own personalized sounds by using the Nextone’s CUSTOM mode to edit detailed settings for the preamp, power amp, and effects. You can create different settings for the CLEAN channel and LEAD channel.” The editor is where the real power and flexibility of the amp lies. The various presets are editable and the changes can be stored in the custom setting or remembered for later reuse. That there is no way to access all the stored presets from the foot pedal or the knobs is disappointing but the individual presets are very believable and I just run on whichever I have currently loaded.
No, it's equipped with a USB connection, and its settings can be managed by a software via a computer. The power amp is analog. But the preamp is digital. It's like a Katana with the choice of 4 solid state power amp "filters". And with "TubeLogic" which is according to Boss : "amp-speaker interaction (...) fine-tuned with DSP for very precise adjustment". (DSP = Digital)
Yes, it’s analog. There’s a DSP used to help the power-amp control the speaker, but no modeling occurs in the guitar signal path, even in the preamp, despite the comment above. Boss is very clear about that.
Another modeling amp in a market that’s full of them. They look good though. They’ve almost got the old Marshall look to them. They definitely look a lot better than most. I say save up a just little bit more and buy a new Blues Deluxe or a used one for the same price.
Dawn Russell , you can call it whatever you like. It is made to imitate other amps and things that the amp doesn’t actually have. Namely power tubes. It is imitating power tubes but has no power tubes. Analog and digital are both a form of modeling. This has all been done before by other modeling amps.
Shawn Glass “modeling” has multiple meanings with amps and design. The Nextone has a DSP and uses it to monitor the speaker’s impedance as it changes when reproducing the guitar signal and adjust the power-amp circuit to give the effects of sag and bias adjustments on tube amps. They don’t need to do A/D and D/A conversion of the guitar signal to accomplish that. So it’s not modeling in that sense. They do “model”, or imitate or emulate or simulate tubes because the power-amp feels like a good tube amp as far as sag and compression goes, and the tone stack and presence set by each power-amp circuit gives the sound of the various tube-types. The sound gets fatter as the volume on the guitar rolls up and that gives us a tube-like experience too. There’s no A/D of the guitar signal there either according to their docs, and no modeling of amps digitally. There are used tube amps found in the price range, but you would need several different ones to cover the sounds the Nextone does well; at volume the Tweed Lead, British Lead and Modern Lead sounds are pretty believable, both in sound and feel. And with tubes you’d have to buy a really good attenuator to allow reducing the volume and still maintain the sound. I was very skeptical about them. I’ve never heard a solid-state amp I liked, and never heard a modeler that was equal to my tube amps, and thought a long time about the pluses and minuses of these amps before even going to play one. The first time I couldn’t turn it up and wasn’t overly impressed but needed to know how it’d sound at stage volume, went to another store and turned it up loud at 20 watts and was very impressed with how it behaved with my Strat. Other people were coming over asking to plug into it because it sounded so good. I took that amp home. I’ve been playing a long time, and have used a lot of classic and boutique tube amps and am picky as hell when it comes to my equipment and sound. My Strats with Raw Vintage RV-50 and RV-60 pickups, and my humbucker equipped PRS guitars sound great through it. This amp is a good addition to my Mesa and ToneKing amps. I recommend them.
You will find it hard to find a tube amp that will compete for the same price. The tube amp will have cheap tubes and components and won’t have to feel. I tried following that path many times, buying many different tube amps chasing the sound of a ToneKing SkyKing , having them modified, and finding nothing came close. My amp tech finally told me to save my time and money and just buy a SkyKing. I did and love it. I followed that up with a Mesa Lonestar Special, and then a ToneKing Imperial Mk II, all are very respected amps for the sound. I love them and use them often but can’t justify taking them on vacation so I looked for something light and small without tubes, and picked the Stage. These are good amps and should be given serious consideration as alternatives to tube amps under $1000.
Few of the videos do a good job replicating the sound live. It’s a pretty fat sounding amp at volume, so much so that other players were complimenting my sound coming from the Stage. And it cleans up nicely when you roll the volume back, like good tubes do.
It sounds good, but I prefer to put my heart into playing the instrument, not navigating between a million tone tweaks. That's my feeling now, but it could change.
not much tweak, only when you access the editor (have preset to from without fuss). try it before though, you ll still be aware playing through a solid state amp but you get sag feel. the sound is not as colossal as tube amp. Edited I tried the Artist version damn more agressive, more lows 20% better sound
The valve is no longer needed to get great guitar tone and response! Also a valve design is unable to be this versatile or flexible. The Boss Katana proves this...
I have a Yamaha THR10X so Im a fan of amps like this. But I am also aware that a well made tube amp will be around in a decade or two no problem, while my Yamaha will be unfixable digital waste within maybe....5-6 years?

Those knobs simply change software parameters in the "pre-amp" to mimic the sound and reaction as if it had a tube power amp.. the power amp in this thing is a power brick with no inherent character..
@Mitch Gallagher Oh thanks Mitch, if that's the case, its a bit more elaborate circuit wise than what i was thinking..appreciate the reply.
This guy could sell anything.
Excellent clear demo - thank you
🙂👍
Great review! Thanks a lot :)
I love mine....got it for $150 off on clearance...that MARSHALL tone.
Seems like a good product but the price sort of surprised me on the high side. Gonna have to be great at that price.
It's not modeling. It's a SS class AB amp. They've been around for a long time and they just keep getting better and better.
Great demo! Thanks!
Great demo
Great sounding amp, funky name, nextone? Reminds me of westone slm .
A great amp should have a great name. Nextone... sounds like a Walmart
Brand name.
Saturated drive tones sound really good from here.
I don't know where I got the idea these might sound like tube amps,
like for blues, clean drive; SRV , Duane Allman, Hedrix (Wind Cries Mary etc).
Oldguyjammin Me too....
These seem to sound really great - like a Helix in a guitar cabinet! I predict that Boss will sell a ton of these!
I think Boss should really make a variation of these, like skip the preamp and use a Helix as a preamp and FX. Keller compo
Yeah, the Katanas are really bright - couldn't agree more.
Replace the speaker with a Celestion Creamback takes the "bright ice-pick away"
@@bobboitt3126 Gotta love a Creamback
The Nextone is pretty bright initially because the speaker isn’t broken in. Mine hasn’t yet but reports are that the amp mellows nicely once the speaker does.
The Presence control can help a lot too, as does the built-in EQ sections available in the editor.
How many presets can be stored and recalled for use live? I suspect a MIDI foot controller would be best.
Great, Deep , informative video.
why won't Boss have an app for IOS???? or android pads? Everyone else can, Line 6's has a TON of stuff to tweak, and the iphone app handles it.
New V3 firmware is coming out soon for Kat series..I hope they considered this!
@@Timbo6669 a firmware update can't magically add in Bluetooth lmao, need the hardware inside
Sounds decent, but this looks like Boss's take on the Blackstar ID Series (not Core, I'm talking about the original ID Series, which has been around for 6+ years) and offers way more versatility for a slightly lower price point. However the Boss computer interface and features seem to be light years ahead of the (current) ID software.
im gonna get one great demo
12/22/2019. Hello Sweetwater, I have heard people be worried it started fizzing and farting with high gain high volume chords. Is that true? All replies from viewers also welcome.
Will the blues cube drop in price now? These are cheaper with better technology.
Do you think Boss will release a 212 version that will be 100 watts?
Your choice of language, Benson, would make Edsel fit you with a Halston dress.
Why have a Mid Boost button when you already have a Mid knob on the EQ?
How loud is this? Is the 40 watt louder for example like a tube amp vs a solid state amp?? I love the katana but I’ve always wanted more out of the clean.
Hey, Josh! The loudness of this amp is actually comparable to a 40-watt tube amp, even though it's solid state. If you have any questions feel free to get in touch with me directly.

Thanks for the reply!!
Which recording program, for Windows, should I use?
Was considering one of these till I saw the dials on the top of the amps. on stage I need the dials where I can easily see them!!!
Oh yeah Boss I'm gonna sit there with a Big ass PC to tweak it.
You don't have to. And many people have a laptop or play guitar at their desk anyway. No one is forcing you to buy it, plenty of people who like it.
I use a little 11" note book, much smaller than a pedal board, once it's set after a few rehearsals you don't need it
Just 4 patches to save?
Will the amp remember the last settings when turned off? I have the manual and there is MUCH not explained.
Hi, William! Yes, that amp will use whatever settings you had before you turned it off. Thanks for your interest!

CAN ONE USE ALL THE COMPUTER STUFF WITH ONLY AN ANDROID SMART PHONE ????
Are these things propa' solid state like a Peavey Bandit, or do they have digital DSP mixed in with the analogue preamps?
Hey, Gabriel! The Nextone amplifiers have processing, so it isn't a direct solid state like the Bandits. However, I would check them out a bit more in detail as they really do sound fantastic. Let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!

So
let's not make this be more than it really is!! But, thanks for the replies anyway. Its all a personal preference.

What?
The man is a living power point presentation, no humanity.
Why did Boss only settled for 80 watts instead of going for a full 100 watts?
Only a little more headroom on 100w vs 80w. And the output db difference is negligible btw the two wattages. 80w is plenty for gigging.
Mitch, is there an eta for this amp yet?
Hello! We should be getting a shipment of these in here by early December, or just after the new year. I would highly recommend placing a pre-order to ensure yourself a spot in line off this next shipment we're receiving, as I cannot guarantee that we won't sell out of these before they even arrive.
Thanks for the interest!

Without a politically correct answer, would Sweetwater go for the katana artist or the nextone if they were in a similar situation as me?
I'm basically in the same camp. I have a Katana 100 that I really like, but I use two of the amp sounds and reverb. Brown and lead are fun, but I've literally never used them at a gig. Better low and mid gain amp tones with an ability to hit nice American style clean tones sounds amazing to me
I say defer your decision if at all possible. I love my Katana Artist precisely because I don’t have nor want pedals. This Nextone is likely only the first in a new series. There’s so much evolution right now with amps and modeling you might see other manufacturers also introducing interesting models.

If I wanted to sit in front of my MacBook and tweak things I'd just use the amp models in GarageBand. (which sound awesome)
Keep it. I just bought a 100 watt Katana 3 days ago. A full wallet is a happy wallet.Hey boss you loose.

Gordon Roberts lmao yea idk how they lost if you bought one of their products.
I have the boss katana 100 also that I got last year and it’s awesome!
They lose? lmao damn you're an idiot.
The docs for the amp and editor both say this:
“[CH SELECT] button
*
Switches between the CLEAN channel and the LEAD channel.
Hold down this button for one second or longer to select CUSTOM mode.
In CUSTOM mode, sound settings can be made only using the dedicated software.”
and:
“Nextone Editor is editor software that lets you create your own personalized sounds by using the Nextone’s CUSTOM mode to edit detailed settings for the preamp, power amp, and effects. You can create different settings for the CLEAN channel and LEAD channel.”
The editor is where the real power and flexibility of the amp lies. The various presets are editable and the changes can be stored in the custom setting or remembered for later reuse. That there is no way to access all the stored presets from the foot pedal or the knobs is disappointing but the individual presets are very believable and I just run on whichever I have currently loaded.
Is this analog?
No, it's equipped with a USB connection, and its settings can be managed by a software via a computer. The power amp is analog. But the preamp is digital. It's like a Katana with the choice of 4 solid state power amp "filters".
And with "TubeLogic" which is according to Boss : "amp-speaker interaction (...) fine-tuned with DSP for very precise adjustment". (DSP = Digital)
@@too--late thanks...
Yes, it’s analog. There’s a DSP used to help the power-amp control the speaker, but no modeling occurs in the guitar signal path, even in the preamp, despite the comment above. Boss is very clear about that.

How much better is this than the Roland cube xl? Hmm..
Its a 20 min video where he barely touches the EQ. I wouldn't judge it off this completely
I just don't understand, is this a valve amp or a solid state amplifier? Tube logic? Is it a modeling amp or what? (glad I stay with my Katana)
Another modeling amp in a market that’s full of them. They look good though. They’ve almost got the old Marshall look to them. They definitely look a lot better than most. I say save up a just little bit more and buy a new Blues Deluxe or a used one for the same price.
It's not a modeling amp, its analog . It has software to
Vary the values of the components, to mod the
Sound .
For the price, I'll stick with the real thing.
Considering if you were to buy 4 tube amps that sound good you'd run up to about 2 grand, id say this is a helluva thing here
man, why do you speak so fast? no hurry!

I love the idea of these but the sound...not so much.
Few of the videos do a good job replicating the sound live. It’s a pretty fat sounding amp at volume, so much so that other players were complimenting my sound coming from the Stage. And it cleans up nicely when you roll the volume back, like good tubes do.
The drive sound is very, very thin
Great demo ! These are not for me. I am not crazy about the fx or farting around with a laptop or apps when I play. Too expensive.

Cold ,sterile and harsh sounding, yep its a solid state amp for sure.
A lot of features and flexibility, but still not a tube amp sound. Sadly, many other emulation products have the same problem.
