      @@brandonlesko3126 a speaker change does wonders for the Katana, particularly for high gain tones. I have a 2x12 that I swapped out the stock speakers to a Vintage 30 and a 70/80 and it sounds effing amazing! • @ToddRichmond
    @ToddRichmond Год назад +14

    For those that find the Katana a bit “fizzy” - the Tone Studio app gives you global eq as well as patch eq that can dial most of that out. Another way around it is using a lower drive amp model (eg clean if you want crunch, crunch if you want lead) and dial up a treble boost in the boost slot. You have some eq there as well. Takes some time but is worth the effort, especially if you’re used to a bit rounder tube sound. Eq is your friend.

    Great amp, recently bought one. I have the 100 watt head going into a Mesa Boogie 4x12 can from the MK3 series in 1986. The best and quickest way I can describe the variation button on the amp is just like how some tube amps have a vintage or modern switch. All five channels have a more warm vintage sound, and a modern , brighter, tight higher gain sound. I have Fender, Marshall, Boogie, Laney, and EVH amps. This keeps up with all of them on every level. I honestly don't understand how they pulled that off at that price point.

  • @ryanlord6286
    @ryanlord6286 4 года назад +12

    Here's some additional clarification from Roland/boss on volume:
    - If using a lower POWER CONTROL and MASTER LEVEL you lean more on the KATANA PREAMP - GAIN and VOLUME settings, DSP, gain, saturation and tonality.
    - However if you use MASTER LEVEL at MAX and POWER CONTROL at 100W with GAIN and VOLUME used sparingly you'll use more of the CLASS A/B POWER AMP.
    The main difference is that if you lean more on the POWER AMP you'll have more of tubelike experience, push/pull tube like dynamics, feel, tone and headroom.
    It ultimately is up to user preference and choice of which workflow works and sounds best for their context.

    • @TheNightstalker80
      @TheNightstalker80 4 года назад

      Thank you for this additional information, I just got my MK2 and was wondering exactly about if and how you can get different sound just by using the Pre or Power Amp stage. I didn't had enought time to try myself and obviousely also not enough experience because I'm quite new to that stuff. Anyway that helps a lot, I'll be testing that today because I knew that the Katan can do pretty much straight out of the box and without turning and pressing a lot on the panel so this might be exactly what I need.
      But tbh, playing with the effects and models is also a lot of fun and makes playing even more of a experience.
      I just switched from acoustic guitar to e-guitar and this adds so much more variety!

  • @tonycortezzaofficial
    @tonycortezzaofficial 2 месяца назад

    I’ve watched about a dozen reviews on this amp and this is by far the best example of what it can do right out of the box!
    Thanks man!
    All of the sounds you showed are what I need to play a working gig. Now I just have to find a good video on how to program the pedalboard.
    I was a Line 6 player for years but apparently BOSS has taken over the market and as I’ve always loved BOSS effects I guess it was a natural progression.

    Thank you Justin, I also just bought a MK2 and it's a great amp. I got it for me and my son, we both just started with electric guitar, coming from acoustic this thing adds a lot of variety and fun to the learning process. When exercising we mostly play clean but crank the gain up and throw some overdrive in just makes so much fun and the basic excercise tracs are so much more fun when you got them and then play them like that ;-)

So far i decided to wait few weeks as it is not so clear if MKII is better or not. For sure MKI is cheaper. Second hand MKI is possible to find for just 170$ while new MKII is at least 270$. If the sneaky amps functionality will be ported, I would go MKII for sure, without it - it's much harder to say.

  • @bradh6185
    @bradh6185 4 года назад +9

    I recently bought one. Yes it sounds very good for a non-tube amp. And my 50-watt is giggable. I used it in my house band(100-seat room) with no pa/mic, and it had more than enough. I also used it outside mic'd and it was great. However, the low end is a bit thin compared to my tube amps. Which isn't necessarily bad in a band because it keeps the low-end cleaner in my opinion. My tube amps are now out of the shop and they will be my first choice. But I'm keeping this as a backup, as an acoustic amp, and as a practice amp. This is just a good amp to have around, especially considering the price. I wouldn't recommend it for metal in a band situation- it's not going to replace a half-stack. But it's good for anything else. Also worth mentioning is that it's very lightweight.

    I went ahead and sold my old Peavey Backstage Plus and bought the Katana 50 mk2 right 2 years ago. As an older newb to electric guitar tones this amp is great. It helps me to know and recognize the different effects sounds that more experienced guitarists already know. If I want to invest in some pedals I can try that sound in the effects and find the ones I like. The alternative is to drive to a music store and try them, which I will do anyway after I narrow down the ones I am interested in, or buy them and find out I don't like it. Love this amp!

    I’ve found the best way to fatten up the tone of this thing is to run both the Volume and Master at 75% or more, and then use the Gain control to control your volume. Particularly with the ‘Clean’ amp type and an archtop jazz guitar, this eliminates the ‘thin’ sound issue.

    • @georgepalmer7759
      @georgepalmer7759 18 дней назад

      Hey, thanks for your input. I'd like to expand on this. Would you have Master at 100% and volume at 75%? Or do you turn back Master to 75% if it ends up having gain to high for the volume you want? What's the max gain setting you like to use for a clean sound? I'm brand new to this, trying to figure out the Katana MK2 100w. I don't have a semi hallow guitar. I have a 50's les paul standard, but I have 13-56 flatround strings on her. I keep the guitar volume at 8 or 9 because lowering the guitar volume muddies the sound, and I have the neck pickup pot at 7-9 depending.
      Again, when I hear volume and master volume at 75% + I immediately think to myself, why wouldn't I just crank both to 100%? Or volume to 75% and master volume to 100%.
      I hope this reaches you, thanks again for your help! I should say, I'm learning jazz guitar, and I'll play blues as well. I played tenor sax most of my life (be bop, hard bop, jazz) after a surgery I can't play any instrument with my mouth - flute included... so after a hiatus from music I picked up a guitar to get back into jazz. I have a long road ahead of me as I was gig ready on the sax, learning an entirely different instrument will take some time. I'm practicing 6-8 hours a day, I'm hoping to get there eventually.

    Honestly the best amp that I've tried that isn't thousands of pounds worth of gear.
    The ability to record straight to PC is a huge bonus.
    The dynamic sound is brilliant, and feels like a tube amp.
    The ability to cut the wattage, a superb way of retaining that high volume grunt, but without the neighbours getting pissed off with me.
    Amazing bit of kit.

    The reverb can be changed by software and/or pedals (you have to press longer, than you can change the efx styles red/orange/green) between Plate (was default in my case) Room ,and spring reverb. With the Boss Katana Software / App and pedals (f.e. Boss Pedals or Sonic Airstep KAT) you have full access to all efx.

      It is the same core amplifier, just a few features to appeal to a less experienced market. When you consider that tube amps have not really changed in over 50 years, they are very simple and you add effects into them, the MKII won't make any difference to your sound or your playing ability.

    Katana tone stack works like this: the whole EQ all the way up is the standard.
    If you keep them halfway you get quite same tone but less overall volume.
    There are no boost in katana EQ.

    • @emiliocurbelo8891
      @emiliocurbelo8891 4 года назад +1

      Exactly! That is what many of people doesn't understand, that, unlike most other amps, the Katana equalizer buttons are only attenuators. The standard starting position is all up to the max, and we should always keep at least one of them to the max, otherwise we'd be just taking off volume from the sound, hitting specially the clean sound.
