Stockdale Paradox in short right? Radical acceptance of the situation and that things may be shitty. But also having relentless optimism that things can and will get better, and you can do your best to influence that

The world is better with you in it. Stoicism isn't about pessimism but resilience. Marcus Aurelius faced immense hardships yet advocated for fulfilling our duties as humans with kindness and humility. True happiness comes from inner virtue, not external pleasures. Embrace the challenges, focus on being a good person, and remember your worth and impact on the world.

Wow amazing! Was there anything in particular that worked well? I’m currently going through suicidal depression, I spend about half my day trying to figure out the best way to end it. The thing that’s so horrible about depression is you literally can’t see any light or hope . It’s exhausting.

@@krisb-travel For my personal struggles, I've been journaling, practicing mindful meditation, and reframing things via the mindset of Amor Fati. I don't just accept the brain chemistry I have that sends me to a darker place; I love that this was my fate, because I know I'll be better for it. I will grow from this and help others out of their darkest times. This wasn't some curse. I choose to see it as a toolset to bring others out of the darkest of holes. I know what it's like to be there, and because of that, now I can help. Journaling is like self therapy for me and something I had never done. Mindful meditation is a way to discard the anxiety of the future or regrets of the past and live in the present moment. Like the stoics say, we suffer more in imagination than in reality, and mindful meditation brings you to the present moment and calms you. It's a practice of reframing your situation constantly to battle against the depressing thoughts we have about our future or pasts.

@@krisb-travelhey there, just want to send you some love. I definitely empathise with having gone through suicidal ideation myself. One of the best pieces of advice I heard was from Viktor Frankl (would definitely recommend watching some of his old interviews on here) and he talks about the importance of meaning in our lives. When I felt as though life had nothing left to offer me, I started to think about what I could offer life. It helps me now because I recognise when I help someone smile or have a better day (even just by something small), I get joy out of that and it gives me a sense of purpose

@@krisb-travel " I spend about half my day trying to figure out... " - we often spend too much time thinking, which can enforce depression. Our brains are more suited to focus on things we are doing.
I try to remind myself: "Don't think. Just be and focus on the task at hand. We are our habits".

I was taught not through the stoics or Ryan but my mother actually that u must learn compassion with detachment. Easier said then done as those who are I'm a state of peril and it's hard not to let that emotion attach itself to you and create an unwanted affect upon oneself but if you can pull that one off you can truly make a difference without putting your own self at risk.

I don't concern myself with getting _over_ depression anymore. It's now all about getting _through_ it. The way I do that is by taking the pain and emotional trauma and using it to do constructive things. Take on a new project. Learn a new skill. Minimize your idle time by filling it with tasks and goals. Do *anything* but lie in bed and sulk!

Although I might not get this situated right away, just hearing all this heals my spirits. About every week I'm ashamed of myself for not fixing my problems whenever the time calls for it. And it reminded me to read deeper into Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, as that is what I'm currently reading. I have these bad habits that can be suppressed, but are hard to let go. These habits make me feel disgusted in myself. Time gets divided every session as I lose hours upon hours of quality sleep. I could've done some much needed chores in the afternoon. I could've at least woken up in the morning. I could've caught up on my pile of books. I probably could've developed a more carefully thinking brain to prepare myself for the busiest work hours

I lost my mom to suicide, my job and my car in one month. Yes I got depressed but I am here. You make it easier then it is. It's not. Your not thinking about service of others, insects, nature..........your stuck in your head. You make it sound so easy but if it was then there would be no suicide. Not everyone has options or this info, support. Sounds to me like you never been depressed, It's funny how you suddenly shout out a sponsor. Better help. You have no idea what depression and the depth it can bring you down.
