    Singe mom here. We haven't had a cost of living raise in a long time as an educator.. So the cost of living goes up, but no raises, I get further and further behind. I rely relatives to purchase food for my children. 8 years ago I could manage to stay afloat, today I struggle. I turn the heat down and keep the house warm but can't afford comfortable heat my children go without because all my funds go to gas, car, insurance, heat, electricity, water, property taxes, mortgage. I am grateful for the support but barely hanging on and that I can somewhat manage but not if the cost of things keep rising and wages do not increase to support basic living. I wonder how many other folks are in my position.

Let them deal with the mess, because the more teachers let these shenanigans fly the more they will freeze your salary - when we all know teachers work more than 40 hours a week when it comes to bringing home plans, grading, IPPs, administrative work, etc. Don't let them walk all over, raise or deal with your shortage of teachers.

Mysteriously "new comers" walk right off the boat and right into apartments. They miraculously find apartments despite coming here with no credit history, a shortage of apartments, and rent that working class Nova Scotians can't afford. And then there are now anti theft barriers in the Superstore and violent crimes that have made our malls unsafe to go to. Trudeau and Houston are turning Nova Scotia into a ghetto.

    This news underscores the urgent need for a progressive approach to address the socioeconomic challenges in Nova Scotia and, more broadly, across Canada. The staggering poverty rates and rising homelessness in Halifax highlight the systemic issues within our current economic model. It's indicative of a late-stage capitalism scenario where income inequality and social disparities have reached alarming levels. A nationwide guaranteed living wage could be a crucial step towards creating a more equitable society, providing a safety net for those most vulnerable and ensuring that basic needs are met for all Canadians. This story from the CBC serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative to reevaluate and evolve our economic structures to prioritize the well-being of all citizens.

      If the federal government had stepped in and tried to get the Premieres to change their provincial laws regarding rental housing or wages, you can bet the Premieres would have raised a huge stink over that. They would have cried interference, overreach of powers, and dictator. But can we as a nation create legislation that sets some standards in these provincial matters? For example, can we not make a law that requires the provincial welfare benefit rent budget ceiling to be not below what actually exists as low-priced units rents? ...and btw the province's plan is inhumane, imho. They're using the housing crisis to do and end-run around our laws. They're profiting off of housing homeless people in commercially produced garden sheds. It is inhumane and expensive in hidden ways as their Welfare budgets are strained with the extra expenses incurred for the increased need of foster families to take their children...

    • @Progressive_Canadian
      @Progressive_Canadian 6 месяцев назад +3

      @bevmacdonald9008 Your concerns about the inhumane response to the housing crisis in Nova Scotia resonate deeply. It's disheartening to see the province profiting from housing homeless people in substandard conditions, especially at the expense of vulnerable populations, like foster families stretched beyond their means. The call for legislation setting standards in provincial matters, such as welfare benefit rent budgets, is valid. From a progressive perspective, the focus should extend beyond just addressing immediate needs. A crucial step lies in advocating for a nationwide guaranteed living wage. This approach doesn't just tackle the symptoms but aims to address the root causes of poverty and homelessness. By making big corporations and the 1 percent pay their fair share, we can reclaim lost tax revenue that often ends up in offshore accounts. This redistribution of wealth can fund initiatives like affordable housing, education, and healthcare, creating a more just and equitable society for all Canadians. It's time for a comprehensive economic shift that prioritizes the well-being of our citizens over corporate profits.

International students are cash cows that have filled in funding gaps that are the result of provincial governments drastically reducing what they allocate in budgets for higher ed institutions. Oh, and lots of those foreign students take on minimum wage jobs that no one else wants. What they get when they arrive is a housing crisis they aren't prepared for because university recruiters lie to them about what to expect to pay. And the degrees and diplomas they get are often absolutely worthless (hello Conestoga College!). This has been covered extensively in the media. Tenancy laws as well as wage/employment laws are the Provincial government's responsibility. There are too many landlords and relatives of landlords in office at both the provincial and municipal levels of government, imho. If the feds had tried to intervene on the public's behalf, you can be certain the Premieres would be yelling about interference, calling it the overreach and whatnot. It is not the federal governnent's jurisdiction. But maybe they can makes laws requiring Provinces to uphold certain standards 🤔 The conditions that created this crisis don't seem entirely accidental to me, especially when we have solutions certain politiciansare ideologicallyopposed to. When I was a volunteer on the finance committee with a housing co-op years ago, the provincial minister of housing said in a meeting with us that the Province was "getting out of the subsidized housing business". He was a Conservative minister in Dr. John Hamm's cabinet. And btw, Dr John was instrumental in early efforts of increasing commercialization of our public health care system.

These Conservative Premieres and their ministers say sh it like "rent control will only make it worse". They abdicate their duties in order to play political games, they don't seem to care about what best for Canadians, only about what's best for their bs narrative. They don't seem to care about human suffering at all. What's with all this complaining? Homelessness has nothing to do with mismanagement of public funds. These are people who do not wish to work. People who are poor have more opportunities in this country than in most other countries in the world. We live in a stable financial system, supported by strong institutions. I am poor too, I have no vehicle, but I don't run around telling people to feel sorry for me, I am okay and going to do better since I am taking certain steps to improve my condition.

      The Cons are in charge of Nova Scotia. People don't understand that voting doesn't change anything. Cons or libs, it's an illusion of freedom, nothing more.

    And the highest Provincial income tax rate of any Province or Territory in Canada, for my income level (14.95%). On top of the 15% Federal income tax of course... BC, Ontario, and the three Territories are all well under 10%.

    drugs and laziness and lack of self control.. single moms, drugs addicts......
    lets be honest, NS is not that expensive compared to AB, ON and BC and their wage is not low.... people need to take responsibility and work..... cannot rely on government and drugs is a main problem causing all these problems and homeless people..
    government should really look at it

      @@dasalekhya I grew up in NS. Haven't lived there for three decades. Been around. Lived in two other provinces. Worked in other countries. NS. Hmmmm... Scenic, absolutely. Nice beaches? You bet (but cold!). Nice to visit? Sure. Unique? Not so much. Maybe in how uninterested, paralized, and stagnant it seems to be when it comes to advancing its own economic prospects. That much is unique.
