  • Should the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Be So Inclusive? Who’s The Man Behind the Curtain of the R&RHOF?
    Hey everyone!
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has done it again! At the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, many were inducted! And some of these inductees were even actually Rock acts!
But sadly, something all too familiar also occurred at the awards ceremony this year!
What was that? And has that something almost killed the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? Is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame even something that anyone really watches? Who are the heroes, and who are the villains, both on camera, and behind the scenes?
These and many more questions are answered in tonight’s video!
If you enjoy tonight’s video, please consider giving it a Thumbs-Up, as that helps the RUclips algorithm better identify the channel to a larger audience!
And if you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet, it is as easy as hitting that subscribe to ‘The Tribe’ button, then tapping the Top-Bell Icon to be notified of all my future videos on exciting bands and artists from the Classic Rock era, as well as today’s greatest music!

Cannot agree more. The Monkees not being in there is a travesty - they were one of the most popular bands of the 60s, rubbed shoulders with the Beatles and others, had a hit TV show that everyone in our generation was influenced by, loved by all their peers, incredible musicianship and songwriting on those first 6 albums...Hendrix opened for them. They deserve a huge recognition.

Neil Geraldo did co-write some songs with Pat. He does deserves to be treated as her equal. Don’t understand at all why you would disagree with that
According to Pat, she wanted someone who would create a Page/Plant, Jagger/Richards type of partnership and she found it with Geraldo. Not to mention the riffs he laid down often carry the song along with Pat’s vocals and his playing contributes why the songs are so memorable. He’s one of the great underrated players of his generation and shouldn’t be sold short

A great artists and I've always enjoyed her songs. However she is not a Rock Star! Some of her songs crossed over to maybe pop but were clearly still country. I agree with you completely she does not belong in Rocks hall of fame. Her nomination as well as the rappers was controversial from the day they were nominated. You're right on and preaching to the choir. To me, "rock 'n' roll" means just that. I will concede it isn't always easy to define or distinguish. I also admit to areas of cross-over that can blur the lines. But other musical genres have their own monikers (e.g. "rhythm & blues," "hip-hop," "country," "classical," etc.) for specific reasons, due mostly to shared characteristics that have little to no commonality with "rock" music. To me, the easiest way to identify actual rock music is the artist's catalogue as a whole (even acknowledged rock acts sometimes venture into a different genre). But to your point, there are now so many non-rock artists in the hall I can't take it seriously. It feels like they quickly ran out of the widely-accepted giants of '60s and '70s rock and then just turned to well-known names - even though those artists never came anywhere near recording, performing (or probably listening to) bona fide "rock 'n' roll." Nice job of investigative journalism here. Merry Christmas.

Hi Michael, I enjoy your videos and find your opinions on much of the material you cover matches mine. I normally watch the videos on a cable/streaming box, which makes it somewhat inconvenient to add comments, so this is my first time commenting. When it comes to the politics and B.S. of the R&RHOF I have a story for you. I live across from Detroit, Michigan in Windsor, Ontario Canada.
Back in the 60's & 70's the local AM Station: Am 800 CKLW, had a 50,000 watt signal that on a clear night could be heard across most of the mid-west. This included Michigan, Ontario, Ohio and Illinois to name a few. The music director Rosalie Trombley, known as the “girl with the golden ear.”, was “the single most powerful female in the pop music business” because she made careers. She had such musical knowledge and an ear for great new music. She almost single handedly helped kick off/ boost the careers of such bands as Elton John, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, Alice Cooper and KISS. Also, there would probably be no Soul and Motown as we know it without her. The Bob Seger song Rosalie is about her. There is a documentary called The Big 8: The Rise and Fall of CKLW, I recommend that you, and the rest of the Tribe for that matter, give it a watch. It will shock you that she has not even been considered for the R&RHOF.

There’s the backbeat, the instrumentation, and how that instrumentation is both used and mixed in to their material, melodies with minor third harmonies, certain progressions in basic rock, and more complicated progressions developed by later bands!
And finally Eminem sampling 7 Rock songs on his material does NOT make him Rock & Roll! Now where did all that sampling start?

It's funny, here in Nashville I keep getting notification about how the Ryman Auditorium is celebrating being named a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Landmark this year. You usually think of them as being part of the history of country music. As part of the celebration, they'll be having Bono, Lynard Skynard, Smokey Robinson, and John Mellencamp doing shows. A news article about being named a landmark mentions inductees whove played there that include Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, James Brown, Foo Fighters, the Byrds, Clapton, Joan Jett, and Elvis Presley. I saw Elvis Costello there a few years ago, and he's also an inductee, but obviously, all of those artists aren't rockers.

I completely understand the argument against letting mere pop artists in the R&R HOF, but I also understand that once the precedent is set you can't put the cat back in the bag. Does Dolly belong? No, but she has just as many credentials (if not more) to get in as Jay-Z. I think it also understates a difference in common usage of the term "rock and roll". Back in the 80's, when the R&R HOF was created, "rock and roll" and "pop music" were used interchangeably by certainly most people not in the industry and maybe by most in the industry. Of course, now there are many different genres of music that fit into the "pop music" umbrella that were not considered so back then. So maybe the intent of the R&R HOF was to include all forms of popular music. I honestly do not know enough about the history of the HOF to know what the original intent of the creators was.
And something interesting perhaps only to me, but I find it curious that the song Pink Floyd played for their HOF induction was what Gilmour refers to as "a very simple country song", and yet no one then or now had any objection.

Agreed. I have very mixed feelings about Dolly. She is a talented singer and composer, originally in the Country genre. But she cashed in by doing pop music and movies. She hasn't been a "Country" artist in decades, and has NEVER been a Rock artist. She takes what she can get for a buck. Good for her, I guess. I certainly won't disparage any individual's attempt to make money in this crazy world, which brings me to the R&R HOF. They, too, have cashed in by selecting so many non-rock artists, just for the purpose of attracting their fans and making money from them. An organization like that (as opposed to an individual) SHOULD be more true to its' mission, and less concerned about revenues. Bottom line: Dolly is a good-to-great pop (and previously Country) singer/composer. I can easily see her in a Country music HOF. The R&R HOF took the money and ran (catch my Steve Miller reference there?) by inducting virtually any artist who has sold a lot of recordings, despite their lack of connection to R&R.

Where I differ is the idea that only people who have been in the rock scene for years should release rock records. I think it's an emotional opinion based on our genre being marginalized.
We praise the Beatles for jumping into different styles of music with zero experience. The Bee Gees jumped into disco and immediately made classics.
With Dolly, we're not talking a about samples and auto-tune. It's not even Pat Boone doing metal.
Dolly grew up around wonderfully dirty southern rockers and rhythm and blues guys. She plays guitar and knows how to hit a pocket. Why can't the country girl throw a little leather on for once and get nasty?

IMO no rap artist should be inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame. It’s a joke when you’ve got a long line of rock bands like Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden … how about the king of surf guitar, Dick Dale … and also Cliff Richard & The Shadows!!
How on earth can even Donna Summers (Disco 🤮) be inducted before actual rock acts is beyond me.
Both Country and Blues genres have that grey area with rock (because it’s a combination of both), but I do agree with you on Dolly Parton …. she’s always been mainstream country.

Let’s just change the damned name to the ‘Lucky Few Who Kissed Jann Wenner’s Ass Hall of Fame’!
      Thanx, Renato!❤

It’s a thrift shop. If you have ever been there it’s a shame. It’s extremely hard to find a lot of artists.

What about Canadian bands like April wine ? I hear their music on lots of US television shows and movies . What about the Guess Who and BTO?
