Im building a 301cc for the first time and THIS is one of the only and most helpful videos ive found.your channel has help guide me threw any hiccups so thank you👍🏾
I cant believe how much of a difference there is power wise between the 420 and the 212.. love this block.
harbor freight is having a parking lot sale soon.. i might have to go grab one of these for the mini bike!
I like the fact that you go into pretty good detail in what you're doing, helpful when someone like me who's still just starting to build and upgrade engines and go karts. Have a buggy i just picked up and putting a 420 on it so Thanks even if this video is 3yrs old.
Same here! Just getting into building off road karts and his channel is the best I've found
Well, I just picked up my own engine, and enjoyed having "foresight" in removing those items, and cleaning things up. Thanks much, I chose this engine because of you and several other people who have enjoyed putting them into shape. I look forward to "test driving" mine. I'm impressed with the cleanliness, good design, and quality you show is in these engines. Thanks again.
Why did you use quotation marks when stating "foresight" and "test drive"? Im just curious and mean no disrespect.
@@jeremyshea8055 I'd been looking for a carb for a chipper/shredder, two years, and bought the engine, then found a "Chinese carb", got my shredder running, and now am looking at that engine for a "walk behind tractor", and knowing the options from someone else's experience is a great boon. I live on sixty acres, and am planning on planting some five to ten acres next year. This and other videos has opened my options, and made getting going much easier, cost effective. I've found the Chinese have essentially produced parts for everything we've got that breaks, and they work, my government may hate them, but I've always respected their culture, history, and am enjoying their trade benefits.
That gas tank is slick..I will be contacting him to get one made for my racing mower build! Thanks for the great videos, really does help out for people that are mechanically inclined but have never worked on these small engines.. I've learned a lot from this channel for sure!
Well thanks for the support
Can someone PLEASE tell me how to get in touch with the guy who makes those gas tanks ? I have a totally restored Yerf Dog two seater with a new 420 Predator engine and I want to switch out my gas tank for for like this one. Please help. Thanks !!
I love the grease and tap trick. I will remember that trick. ty. cool mods. cheers 👍😎
I fucking lost it at the “I let it vent out into our atmosphere because that’s really good for our planet” LMFAOOOOO
Thank you! I picked up a run down go kart for my kids that has a 270. Its beat to hell and i wasnt sure what to do. Your video helped a LOT. Lots of info i didn't know.
There is also a video on the channel about how to rebuild a gx270
Red Beard's Garage i ment to comment on that video. Think video ended and went to this one without me noticing.
I was thinking for a second like " why would you build a motor this big and put on a children"s cart" Lol Love your videos
Diggin that RBG KARTS sticker on that engine!
hey red beard. great looking engine. Learned a lot just watching the video. really can't wait to see it run. Man that is going to be awesome.
Which motor from harbor freight should I get if I'm trying to hit over 70 miles per hour on a go-kart
A 212 can do that a 420 can do that a 459 should be able to do that when there is more aftermarket support and a 670 can my favorite motor of theirs is the 420 I been able to hit 93 before but I have a ton of aftermarket parts and a transmission
Well you can get a predator 212 or you can get any predator motor just have to upgrade it to go over seven miles per hour if you're trying to do that stock get 670 but a 212 would be the best option with a stage 5 build on it
@@thatpersonthatexists7851 hey man do you have links to your build? Would love to check that out

Red Beard's famous words @18:05 "The most tedious part about tapping a hole is getting it started".
Really Good video. Prompted me to get in touch with Brad Hill and get one of his beautiful gas diamond plate tanks for my kart. Coming this week. got my brand new (still in the box) predator 420, header, air filter and new 40 series torque converter. Can't wait for this weekend to get to work. One thing on your video made me a little nervous. Not to be too picky but when removing small parts, (nuts and clamps) with your muffler off, you should stick a rag or something in the manifold opening. Having something fall in that hole is a big OOPS, and something your viewers should be warned of. Great videos coming out of Red Beards Garage. Keep it up pal. Thanks.
He does awesome work and is an awesome guy as well. Thanks for supporting the channel.
I just let the gas drain off and evaporate because is really good for the atmosphere lmao!!! I'm dying brother
Just picked up a 301cc, it has begun
Awesome build! The gas tank is a work of art that makes the engine. I would leave the low oil sensor alone. It would be sad to lose the engine because of low oil even though one should constantly keep checking the level.
I have never heard of anyone loosing the engine because of the oil sensor removal. You have to remove it on go karts. When you take curves hard or on a off road go kart it will kill the engine. That is the first thing I do when I get these engines
Well, that makes sense for that application.
Well now I have discovered someone already took my governor off lmao
And maybe the reason it leaks all over my garage floor is they didnt use enough gasket maker!
if you leave the low oil shutoff in the engine it will automatically shut down in event of a rollover. just had that happen while drifting my off road garden tractor! LOL!
And will shut off when traversing steep terrain!
This channel is awesome! I'm planning a swap on an Arrow 200 and this is a huge help!
It just dawned on me that you love within an hour from me. The jacket had me puzzled, as I knew that dealership name
great video man ,just got a 420 for my off road kart build. even being a stock moter it has alot of power. I can't wait to see it with mods you put on it .
+Charlie Whiteman hopefully the video will be out Wednesday
I haven't run across any of your videos removing material from the head to increase compression...why is this? Clearance issues to eyebrow reliefs, deck height clearnce, or connecting rod strength issues?
Thanks in advance.
Ive got that same flathead with the red handle, the grip slips real bad when you try to tighten something, sets everything to about 15ftlb
Not sure if you will read this but when you remove the oil sensor bolt, on the other side there was a black plastic piece with a rubber washer. I used the rubber washer with a bolt and didnt need to tap anything. This was on the 212..
i'm sure you are aware of this but let me remind you if you delete the crank cover gasket for rtv on any type of engine like this you change the crank end play. my experience with predator motors they are on the tight side out of the box. for high rpm/load add an extra gasket for 2 1/2 or more thou end play. just use a dial ind on end of crank and move back and forth for a reading. loose end play will rpm better and won't bind the crank and roller bearings.
I've got a spare gx390 . I just can't find a decent priced frame anywhere. Learned a lot from you about kart engines in a few hours of watching.
Thanks for watching man. Try the app let go and try also spelling Kart as Cart
Plumbers putty works well when tapping the block too
Thanks for your videos. It has made finding parts and installing them really easy. Could you tell me which size and thread bolts & orings that were used in the oil sensor and governor shaft holes?
Without replacing the stock valve springs and doing this upgrade how many more rpm's can you get with out throwing a rod or damaging the engine ?
In your opinion which mini bike should I buy for adult 198 lbs . Will be use off road thanks
The trailmaster MB200 is in my opinion the best mini bike on the market
I like the toolbox in the background that says stuff at 2:47 😂😂 that's so like me
I watched a similar modification but he put in heavier valve springs to prevent valve float with the higher rpm. What max rpm will this safely run?
Great presentation, Thank you from all of us.
Question. I got that muffler and a 420 header pipe, but how did you attach the muffler to the header pipe?
I need your help.i,m trying to decide which engine to buy and what i need to take governor out and up grade springs .could you please tell me if the hemi and none hemi predator 420 heads have the same valve springs and how do you determine what lb of upgraded spring to use ? and where to buy them from.thank u.
just have to say I really like how you make your videos. I found you through cars and cameras and you really put the for thought into the videos. keep it up and great job man.
+James Cotton thanks man. What did you mean by you found me through cars and cameras? Just curious
I started watching cars and cameras on RUclips and it suggested your channel and I have to say that you build much better
I try to do the best videos I can for your viewing pleasure
@@RedBeardsGarage Overlook too much good mechanical stuff for beginners on the other site. You mostly nail it.Trev New Zealand
Cool tank!! Motor looks good with it. Here is a tip you might not know. The valve cover is silver zink plated. Pull it off and buff the zink on it. The outcome will look like chrome and will match the shine on the tank Harbor Freight sells those buff kits with the the compound, you want to use the red rouge one.
You should add in your description that you bent the valve rod/s. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your 2 yr later updated video. I’m fortunate you made one. Ty! Great detail in your vids otherwise.
Hey red beard I have a mini bike with a predator 212cc with aftermarket air filter, exhaust, and I drilled the jet. Every time when I'm riding it will ride good then out of nowhere it starts to die .last week I went fishing with my friend and when I went to get back home I started driving and it died even though the engine wasn't hot and I let it idle for awhile so I have no idea what's wrong. I need your advice
Its always hard to trouble shoot something over the internet. Will it start right back up after dying?
Austin Davis possibly your low oil sensor... bypass it if you haven't already
yo
check your fuel filter it could be clogged
since it dies before it even gets hot and idles fine u def have a fuel issue
Imagine if Harbor Freight made a 2 STROKE 212, 301, 420, and 670 that will be SUPER INSANE!!!!!!
After watching a few of your videos, listening to you talk and seeing your tools, I think Harbor Freight should be a sponsor of you and the channel. You make their tools look good. I have several sets of those screwdrivers ($7.99 on sale) as well as those long pliers. Love Harbor Freight, one of the good things to come out of California. Thanks for the videos.
So those harbor freigh engines pretty good.
Great 10mm socket I've lost 10 in the past month
when you said 2 10mm I was like is he like us does he have to find the 10mm wrench first
Thank You RBG for sharing this video about the 420cc predator engine. And, how too modify it. You gave me some ideas about my future 420cc build; especially the air filter! I should've thought about how to do that!? LOL! Have A Great Weekend!
I got one of Brad’s tanks, Great tank!!!
Do you have to upgrade the rod and flywheel like a 212 or no after deleting governor?
We don't live in California we have no emission regulations 😂😂😂
fun fact HLSproparts doesn't ship the carb spacer to Canada I've had the go power sports filter and adaptor sitting waiting well I need to modify the go power sports header anyways just got the intake done the princess auto (Canadian harbor fright) engines come with the spacer and gasket
5 years later i had to change the carb because for somr reason the guy i sent my cart to for welding tore the engine apart had the carb so it was just dumping fuel right through to the ground. i got the carb changed now it only runs on choke so i came back here to make sure i have the spacer orented correctly
What jet did you use? Non of your links go anywhere anymore?
I am building a mud motor for my duck boat using this same motor...what would you estimate the HP is now after you modded the engine as is in the video?
With the ported heads 45
RBG can I flip my 420cc powermore vertical to a horizontal without any problem or do I still need to modify the oils splash stick
So nice!!! You should advance the timing 8 degrees.
Yeah that will come with the valve springs in a later video.
Precision or bullnose pliers will grab that governor.
If I want to remove the governor on a 301 predator is it more similar to the 420 or a 212
Thx for the great video.
Do you have a video for an oil drain pipe setup?
Yeah. I'm going in circles trying to find a flywheel with a ring gear that will fit the 212cc. The electric starter kit for the honda gx200 has a different taper, and will only fit the non-hemi predators.
I checked out the billet flywheels from ARC, but they don't make them with a ring gear and they cost as much as the engine itself.
I'm thinking maybe taking it to a machine shop to have them copy the taper from the old one.
Well the hemi does not have a place to bolt up the starter as well. Thats the reason they don't make an electric start for it. The block was never designed for a electric start.
Actually, this one does. Has a November of '16 build date from what I can see if that means anything. I had read on a lot of forums that folks had to do all kinds of stuff before to make them work. But I was able to install the starter as well as the charging coil with no problem at all. Now it's just that dang flywheel not fitting that's driving me bonkers.
BTW, thanks for the response - and the great videos.
+Johnny I. (Logan) how much is a new crankshaft? That's what I would try.
I think like 60 with the cam
Just a heads up for anyone else looking to install electric start: I found a direct bolt on for the hemi predator. yay!
Kohler 1702530-s
Comes with inner and outer magnets, and original fan and recoil start will go right over it. just have to trim the cover and remove one nub from the back of the fins.
It's a brand new engine so it shouldn't have any problems letting fuel through to the bowl right now I left the fuel on and took off the bowl and fuel was pouring out so I know it is getting fuel. I took out the main jet and blew on it I'm going to check and see if it'll run fine
Another excellent video. You produce fine videos and they're spot on in the steps of converting small engines to mini-monsters . I'm glad I found your channel to guide others to for help. Any help I can be, just let me know.
50 years of experience in machinery mechanical & metal fabrication behind me, that I need to pass on. Thumbs up .
Thank you brother. Thank you for supporting the channel.

Where are you (Okie Chopper) located?

you should paint the white pvc bend pipe thing on the air filter a chrome blue or something or just black. The engine looks sick family bought a new house to put up for rent and i found a chopper bicycle and a vintage yamaha mx dirtbike with no engine and i recently bought a powerfist 193 cc engine from princess auto ( its the Canadian version of harbor freight ) and the engines are like the predators
im thinking about which bike i should restore !! im thinking about the chopper tho
Have you watched my chopper build yet? I say do it because its different. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel.
Yea man i love your chopper series :) keep up doing great stuff :)
Was gonna get a 420cc powerfist (Canadian as well). Reviews are good was wondering how yours is working.
What number jet do you use when doing just the intake and exhaust upgrade
How fast is this good for on a two seat go kart would you say?
This thing is seriously bad ass
+James7796ify thanks man
Good info on just clipping the black wire.
What size jet do I need just for the air filter upgrade on my 420cc . Thanks
rosscarmichael78 i want to know this as well.
What size is the jet? Gopowersports don't have the stage one upgrade kit n haven't for months now. So I gotta get it all separately
Not sure. It all depends on your altitude
Did you say what size tap you use? If so I must have missed it unless you use the 3/8th tap for both? Thanks for the info.
hes pulling it around with fishing line
Im pretty sure everyone can see and knows that. I had to twist it somehow.
Red Beard's Garage put a small motor underneath the work bench and have a shaft attached to the plate that the motor is sitting on... I know it's kinda a lot of work when u could just use the fishing wire but just a thought...
what is the wall thickness of the gas tank?
Como puedo hacer que mi motor de club car kawasaki FE350D corra más
So I have a question do I need to put 50 ilb springs in if I take the governor
I have done all the work . Now i cannot get it to idle . Any help would be appreciated
love the 420s. I got two of them.
have you had trouble with the carb? specifically the idle? i can only turn the choke off 1/4 before the bike takes off on me. it's turned down as low as possible.

What length was the 3/8” bolt you used to plug gov arm hole?

So if you disconnect the leaver on the goviner with the spring hook to it is it still nessery to split the case just to remove the gear that no longer works any way
+Allen Lackey I would definitely open it up and remove everything. It's not necessary but I have had a subscriber mess his engine up by leaving it in.
I have a question about the governor removal I'm building a cart and I'm using a Honda 390 and I've never removed one but I e had a couple spin out on riding mowers so what keeps the engine from racing out of control
what cam is better for 420cc 308 grind weld or 356 grind weld or can you explain what one does & the other doesnt
If you disconnect the govener arm from the top of the engine do you have to remove the wheel and j shaft inside the engine?
any reason I can't empower a 185 Honda 3 wheeler with this?
I'm curious I see the point of removing the governor but why remove the low oil sensor it could potentially save your engine, sure they are cheap but it beats pushing your go-kart out of the woods if you run out of oil.
+ARednecksLife if you take a left hand turn hard the engine will shut off. You can leave yours in but it is useless on a go kart. It is more for pressure washer and generators, so if they get knocked over it won't blow it up.
Red Beard's Garage I got basically the same engine (9HP) from Princess Auto here in Canada on mini bike, do you got a link where I can find that air filter kit??
I'm definitely doing the governor mod, I'll consider the low oil shutoff.
Hey red beard where can I get the red hoses for my predator 212 and what sizes should I get for the fuel line and the valve cover vent ?
Im pretty sure amazon or ebay will have it and i think the fuel line size is 3/16
Can you run 93 gas in the 420 perdertor would it mess any thing up
93 would be fine to run in it with no problems
Great detail and clear video. Keep up the good work. BTW - have you upgraded the cam and flywheel yet? There aren't many videos on do's and don't for the 420cc yet. I see a lot for the 212cc. Do you have any suggestions
I will be doing a few more videos on this engine in about a week so stay tuned. You don't need the billet flywheel when running a torque converter.
I don't have a converter. This is on a mud motor boat surface drive.
Would disconnecting the governor arm from the throttle achieve the same result without getting into the crankcase and removing the governor gear and arm?
Do these motors have to use gravity fed tanks or can you use an outboard boat motor tank instead?
Would you what is the distance from block to center of belt on a 780 drive clutch? Still waiting for mine just wanna do mock up for block space check
Why do you not want the oil sensor ?
Awesome build.
Fantastic build, thanks for sharing!
What clutch should I use I have a 420 in the box ready to put in my sons go kart
If you remove the governor gear, and for some reason, the crank moves and you haven't marked the governor gear before removal, how do you set it back in the proper alignment so the engine is not off balance?
you put together some awesome moters
+Alex's lawn care and snow removal thanks man
do i HAVE to take out the low oil sensor for the governor removal or can i leave it in?
that should make a difference
Hi I just purchased a duromax 420cc 16hp and I was needing to find out what size of clutch to buy or where I can find one
I have a mud motor with a predator on my boat.. the header pipe has to go out the back and not to the side. My question is will it run ok with a straight pipe going out of the back? I've seen pipes that curl then go straight back but they're expensive
What's the oil capacity to these motors? I have a 270 I'm building up at the moment
I'm doing the same thing but for a mini chopper. Would I do the same set up, throttle wise, when using a handlebar style throttle? Like after removing the govner.
Just realized this video is 6yrs old 😮
