    I put my tradescantia out on our terrace throughout growing season. We live in Germany, so there‘s moderate heat and humidity.There‘s a kinda milky roof, so lots of indirect sunlight and the plant’s thriving. Lots of healthy, compact, deep purple leaves. I’m definitely doing this every year from now on.

    What's funny is that I have quite a few plants in your video, and I don't have any issues (I'm commeting on the ones I happily have).....
    1. I have three Nanuk plants, and for me, they're relatively easygoing.... just keep them in mild sunlight. Hang them in a bright window, no real direct sun. They dig morning sun, and thats about it. Don't let them dry out. Keep them moist
    My brother got me one for a bday present bcse purple is my favorite color.... I have three bcse some vines broke off, and I just stuck them in water to take root, and there we go
    2. Your Adolphii is a sun lover.... Mine are happiest in a south or west facing window when I have to winter them in my bedroom (I have two). They love being on my south facing porch when they're outside during the appropriate growing temps. The red tips on the leaves means they're getting a little too much sun. Just move them to a shadier spot....... Let the soil dry out a little between waterings, and you shouldn't have an issue anymore
    3. I have a Calathea Setosa , and I really don't have a browning leaf issue with it (it does happen now and then, but not enough to be a problem).... I bottom water it every two weeks or so, and I just literally leave it alone. Mid sun, it's happy on my porch... It's one of those plants that doesn't like to be really fussed over. Just don't let it dry out too much, and it'll be a happy creature feature
    4. Your Zebrina (I know it as a "Wandering Jew") is a GROUND loving vine. I tie mine to a moss pole and keep the pole moist (just so it stays within the confine of the space I have), and I don't let it hang at all. That stresses the stems too much since it doesn't hang in its original habitat . It's bushy as all get out on a three foot pole in a two gallon pot. The bottom leaves do die out, but stems get thicker as it grows up, kind of like a Pothos in a weird way.. When it starts to escape the pot, I just twine it up to the moss pole and let be a beautiful mess of ivy
    5. I have SEVEN (yes seven), types of Alocasias (Pink Dragon, Grey Dragon, Sarian, Purple Sword, Bambino, Frydek, and Zebrina).... Now they are finicky with watering...... when they get too much water, they'll start to drip water from the tips of their leaves (this is known as guttation). Let them dry out a little between waterings. Use your hydrometer RELIGIOUSLY with these guys, and if it reads dry, water them until it reads "moist". They don't like wet feet, but they don't like being dried out either....
    6. When it comes to your Pothos, it just sounds like a watering issue..... I have two Marble Queens (one broke off from the mother plant, and I stuck the broke off bit it in my fishtank to take root, and it's doing amazingly well). But my potted Queen is a bit different. The potted Queen doesn't like too much water, but if I neglect it for a bit and it starts to droop, I give it a good watering, and it comes right back. Maybe one or two leaves die off, but nothing major...
    I hope this long ass message helps you out (for the plants I've had success with that you've listed here) and much love to a fellow Plant Parent from across the Pond in Central Indiana ❤️❤️
    (PS... I told you we have a lot of the same plants in our families)

    I've had pots full of T. Zebrina just rooting and growing in water all summer long in South Wales UK ...they are the best tradescantia I have ever grown. South West facing on a warm terrace in full sun . I also shoved a few in a water feature and they've been growing all year. I know I'll need to bring the blighters into a warmer spot when the temperature drops but I'm still amazed that they're thriving outside!!
    Edit: I continually snap long straggly stems and shove em back in the water...bushier and bushier plants with full purple and silver colouration!

    Have you checked the alocasia's root system? Had the same problem with mine, I found the root was constricted by a coco peat pellet baggie that kept the root bulb extra moist. I recently removed the baggie and repotted the plant, also found many corms in the process!! I'm still awaiting results but I've found that doing that helped other plants I own. Good luck!

      Thanks for this! I’ve been struggling with mine from IKEA - correct watering and led grow light and still every leaf it produces shrivels or stays furled. Just looked at the root ball and there are 2 mesh fibre grow pots / cloth propagation bags tightly constructing the growing corms and strangling the base of the stems….
      Just potted it up and really hoping my plant survives….
      Great insight from your experience- Thanks

    On Calathea: keep soil moist, high humidity (water plate underneath), very moderate light (no direct sunlight at all), and clean water.
    On Tradescantia zebrina: I do the same thing you do. It looks pretty good. This plant also likes very moderate light
    Another plant that like it darker: Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans).. Too much light makes it go light green, and then yellow.
    Deformed leaves could be a sign of some missing mineral. Try adding iron and magnesium (Epsom salt).

    Try giving your Adansonii more humidity. That unwillingness for the leaves to unfurl is usually a humidity issue. Those thin papery leaves are usually an indicator of a little more appreciation of humidity.

    • @SheffieldMadePlants
      @SheffieldMadePlants  2 года назад +2

      What do you think about misting the new leaves while they are unfurling?

    • @malindarayallen
      @malindarayallen 2 года назад +1

      @@SheffieldMadePlants That might work too. I don't think they need crazy humidity. Maybe a pebble tray and misting the new leaves. I had trouble with my Adansonii's until I put them near to a humidifier maybe 3 feet from a south facing window, and they just acted like they'd never had a bad day in their lives, even though they were getting more sun than before. Calathea Zebrina and others calatheas: I bought them a large powerful humidifier, put it nearby them on 65 % or 70 % humidity and problem with crisping is gone (unless they get pests). I find that they need 60 % and higher to be happy and don´t bother me :-) (they grow super fast on 70 % and above). For me without a humidifier it was impossible to reach the needed humidity.

      Adonsonii love moist soil but are super easy to over water. I've rescued a few from supermarkets and after a repot and a trim they do indeed bounce back. One unfortunately still has yellow leaves to I'm not about to remove as the plant was VERY sickly when I got it, but those two remaining yellowish leaves sit upright in my pot and follow the sun around the room as the plant is fighting to thrive. It's been a rewarding rescue as now it has a ton of new shoots for new leaves so when those are established we'll remove those last two leaves so it can properly heal. It's taken about 3 months over the really cold Melbourne Winter (i live in Australia in a state where our weather can be very similar to the UK at times) to recover and I'm so happy that I saved it from death by over watering by the supermarket. There are many plants that appreciate it when they're rescued and they are some of the most rewarding to own.
