    The worst feeling is when you realize its too late to save a plant. I feel guilty for not taking enough care of them. I have no garden but balcony so have got 50 odd pots and then its so difficult to keep track of individual needs and happy requirements. I have killed my mistake 10 plants last year. That sets a challenge for next year. I am not buying anymore plants but propagating from cuttings so I see them grow and feel like they are my babies and have to see to their needs

    I've got an aloe that I haven't watered in about a year and it's still alive (it's really old and ugly, climbing out of its pot and I kinda want it to die but it won't!) All my plants get tap water, even the nepenthes and orchids but I live in a soft water area.

    • @SheffieldMadePlants

    Regarding the watering, I only water with rain water. When I first started watering with collected rain water I had an increase in the Summer of Mosquitos so I put some of the water in a glass and was shocked to see Mosquito and Fungus Gnat Larvae so I placed an old pair of tights over the water butt spout and one over the spout of my watering can. As this acts as a double filtration system no more larvae. If you collect rain water in open containers such as buckets add some cheese cloth over the top, or very fine insect netting, to stop water loving insects getting in, although you will have to remove to get water out and replace. I have an Orange Spider Plant and was initially told that the oldest leaves will blacken and die off but it does turn out your subscriber was correct and it is a lighting issue. I had to move mine a few times to find it's happy place and now it's thriving with no more blackening leaves.

      That sounds grim 😬 Luckily we don’t get mozzies in Sheffield really. I was relieved to keep my green orange going!

    This was what i learned during my 2022 planting year:
    Even tho there r some plants with sensitive leaves, in nature, their leaves do get wet whenever it rains. There is also the matter of needing to rid the leaves of dust and pests that can be washed off in a shower. I discovered that ventilation is key. If there is adequate ventilation, there is little r no danger.
    This year I experimented with african violets and phals. For those grown indoors, I dry the leaves after washing them. And, for the phals and violets grown outdoors, there were no issues. I moved them to a dry spot during the moonsoon season as the constant deluge will cause root rot etc.

    Next spring, I will be cleaning the leaves of my plants and occasionally overhead watering them completely to keep those leaves clean and prevent pests!

    I used to work in an office that had a group of many tall file cabinets in the middle of a big room. There was an Aloe Vera plant on top that seemed to be ignored by everyone. I stood on tiptoe once and looked at it and it's soil looked like cement. Yet it was a big healthy looking plant. Actually it was near all those "flourescent" lights that were used back in the old days.

  • @FredTheFicusAndFriends
    @FredTheFicusAndFriends Год назад +5

    Great tips. I kill Aloe, sadly, and with my SW Ontario CA north Light and diminishing valuable physical real estate under my grow lights, I avoid them.
    I also started watering with rainwater. Apparently, the metal roof on my building creates what a Canadian soil scientist I watch calls "the Cadillac of rainwater". Also, rain contains micro-nutrients, so every water my plants get a lil'somethin' somethin.
    So, after a year, everything is doing very well. I use a fine cheesecloth over the spout when I collect it, and store in various jugs I've collected… plastic pop bottles & 4L jugs. I at any given time have atleast 16-20L on hand. 😁

    As far as fertilizing, I keep old milk bottles (1 gallon) and add the correct amount of fertilizer into each one. The evening before watering I fill each jug with tap water (we have a well, not city water) and let it rest overnight. When watering I use a 12 ounce cup from the jug to make it easy to pour and keep track of how much water a plant is given. I currently have 8 milk jugs for this process.

      I don't know if this tip will help anyone but as my collection of plants has grown over the decades so has my method of watering them. I used to use those one gallon milk jugs to mix the fertilizer and water but as my collection got bigger I resorted to using a 5 gallon pail which makes watering go faster. i just make the water/fertilizer solution in the pail, then dunk the watering can into the pail to fill. I know the UK sells the larger pails (perhaps labeled as 20 liters?) as I saw a hydroponics video on another channel from the UK and the guy was using those size pails from Bunnings, if anyone there decides to try it out.

    Mine was to stop using tap water. Now i use rain water or distilled Video! A few of my plants are looking a lot better since I stopped. Example my dracena and one of my philodendron. Also my other issue was my aloe and you are right about moving them. I now keep my aloe where it just gets alittle morning sun with bright indirect sun the rest of the day. I leave it there and its finally happy. It was a trial and error for me. Great video!

    I find a good way to water my more sensitive plants is to use the water from my fosh tanks during water changes. It is full of nutrients from fish waste and the plants always shoot out new growth after even in the winter in Canada my monstera albo and calathea orbifolia are pushing new leaves. For aloe you can get away with watering it only a couple times a year and it will grow well for you.

      @tomsikorski2517 Год назад +1

      I have been using Liquidirt for many years too with good results. I also use it in conjunction with other fertilizers or plant food as Liquidirt is actually neither. It is more of a supplement which can help your plants better use the fertilizer. I like to tell fellow plant enthusiasts to think of Liquidirt in the same way we humans take vitamins and supplements. While we take those we still need food to survive. The Liquidirt is a supplement to the fertilizer for plants. Try using some fertilizer or plant food along with the Liquidirt to see if you notice any difference.

Because the soil is moist longer, it is a nice environment for Fungal Knats! Not as good or fun for me...! 😂 I also do not spray plants that cannot take moisture on their leaves. When i lived in the city and our water supply was chlorinated, i used aquarium chlorine neutralizer. Thats handy to have on hand if you live in an area where rain is not a guarantee or you just arent up to storing a bunch of milk jugs in your living space. Rainwater also is far from being clean, it contains every airborne polluant particles you can imagine. Yet plants love it. I would say though, make sure your eavestroughs are clean. If it's been awhile, and there is a cake of leaves in there, you could introduce fungi, insects, and funky bacteriums to an environment that isnt prepared for it.

    Sir Richard! Happy Saturday!l to you and your family!🪴
    It’s great to be watching this video with my morning brew. ☕️ But you wanna hear something funny? Just yesterday, as I was regrouping plants under my grow lamp, and combining a few smaller plants, etc….I was thinking that I should ask you to do a feature on plant mistakes. And here you are!! Perfect timing, sir! LOL!🪴
    Mistakes: One of my biggest plant mistakes is dividing new plants too soon. Last year I purchased two very full and lush 10-inch plants: a Dark Green Spider plant and a Swedish Ivy. Well, I decided to make four plants, so I divided them. Well, I lost one of each plant and the two I still have look very skimpy. I should have left them alone!🤣🤣🤣
    Boring plant stuff: the most boring part for me is waiting for props to grow roots. I’m impatient.🤣
    Aloe plant: I nearly fell off the chair when you mentioned the trouble you have with aloes because I have the same issue. It’s a plant that I feel the most guilt over because I think every family should have one for health benefits, such as burns, and scraps. But for the life of me, I cannot keep even one Aloe alive! LOL! And every year, I wrestle with whether to buy another one. But I think am done with Aloes.🤣🪴
    Worrying: This is HUGE with me. And it actually defeats my purpose of having plants - (for their relaxing effect). And plants I worry about the most are the ones that give me the fits, but the ones I ignore do much better, (like that darn Birkin) that won’t die).🤣
    So, I guess the mistake here is that I mess with my plants too much. I have promised myself to not do that, beginning today!!🪴🪴🪴

    I'm curious to see how your aloe does throughout the year. I had a really really big one. It got too big actually and I cut it back a lot of times and finally gave it away to a friend. I made the same mistakes as you and also found that it loves indirect bright light and being ignored the most. I only watered it when the leaves were very flat and started to droop. Then I would give it a thorough watering, wait a week and check all leaves. My plant was so big that one drink didn't supply the whole plant - some leaves were thick and juicy, others were still floppy. If the soil was dry at that time, I would water it again until the whole plant was fully fed. And that would definitely last for a couple of months again until it was watered again.
    It's also a very light-searching plant and likes to lean a lot, so it needs to be turned regularly.
    For me the most tedious plant chore is cleaning the surface around them. Taking all plants off the shelf and cleaning all spilt soil, dust and dirt of is so tedious

    Oh, and have you ever tried Jobe's Plant Spikes as fertilizer? It is easy, slow acting, gentle and I've had great success with it. They're also reasonably priced.

    Bottom watering is great as long as you do not use tap water to do it. Bottom watering with tap water makes all of the trace minerals and chemicals that settle on the bottom of the pot go right back in to soil, when you top water the plants with tap water the soil gets flushed out every time and it prevents the build up. Using rain water is the best for either types of watering, unfortunately not everyone has access to it.

    I find it really interesting that you cant grow aloe vera, this is one of the easiest plants for me to grow. I live in a high desert/arid place, and the best thing for aloe vera here is to let it go a longg time with completely dry soil, until the leaves become a little deflated from using internal water. Maybe move your plant somewhere dry in your house, and forget about it for a while?

    My mistakes: reading the plants wrong. Being too fussy about watering them when the soil seems dry. Preparing the soil the right way, the lightening mixed in instead of in layers or in the bottom. Using a lot of lightening stuff when using soil that already has all kinds of lumps and pieces of wood. Following fancy tricks like having a bit of rubble and water under the orchid pot and having the roots go black. Mixing granular fertilizer in the soil and then using liquid fertilizer anyway (not as often but still). Being fussy and negligent about my pothos, occasionally watering too much, at other times watering too rarely and just making it so unwilling to grow. Like an accidentally pulled leaf grew in a cup of water more than the whole pot of pothos all year. Oh and dropping my coleus cultivar when cleaning and killing it after overwatering it. After it having been the most beautiful and ready to grow of my plants. And the list goes on. New attempt next year.
    One positive that I have going for me is that the tap water is really clean, and I tend to fill the watering can and it often sits for some days before the time to water comes so the chlorine leaves the water, even though my plants don't seem to mind anyway. This was a fun little perspective for a video, makes you think of what you've learned and should remember. In the end I even managed to get store basil to regrow after almost dying out, got rid of whatever bugs there was and they started growing intensely.

    i don't think you should be using the condensed water from your dehumidifier. It is a breeding ground for bacteria as the condensing plates are always wet and never cleaned and collect all kinds of impurities and dust from the air

    🤔
