Good news! Apparently in the latest builds up the game they've added back our ability to bounce after a jumping advancing slash so we can become helicopters again! I plan on doing fully updated guides for launch that go more in-depth into weapon choices and what not but will still keep this up for folks who need help learning the weapon.
I believe it’s confirmed coming back. The current open beta is the exact same build as last beta so no updates of any kind are in it besides maybe networking.
Attention all IG users, go to options and under the controls tab switch the aim/focus mode controls to 'toggle mode.' It's a literal game changer. Thank me later.
Yeah I can already see that being a big deal for IG. They’re asking us to hold like three different buttons down at any given time while also trying to attack and dodge 😂
You can break wounds mid air, so you can combo that huge new finisher that consumes your three colors with breaking a wound mid air and get them inmediately back
How do you break wounds mid air? I've seen wounds on monsters backs and stuff that's hard to reach (impossible) in that focus mode, but hitting the wounds in mid-air would be huge. I'm new to Monster Hunter.
@ArcadiaP while mid air hold the L2 button to see the wounds (dunno the button in other platforms) and then press R1 while still holding L2 to do your focus finisher, the hunter will do a shorter version of it were he stabs the wound, does a backflip and then shoots the bug, I know you can do it with other weapons, but you have zero time to do it with them so it's mainly an insect glaive thing
@@AhmedBinMosad not how I used it 😂😂the bounce was very helpful when the monster just going crazy on the ground doing stuff that does a bunch of damage. It's a lot easier than timing a dodge or just running away, a lot flashier to lol. And the good combos being behind all 3 buffs was always a thing but getting all three in this game is pretty simple way easier than rise
Finally someone who has gone REALLY in depth for this. I discovered the toggle focus mode option as well and it has been a massive help for IG. I still don't really like having to hold Circle for the tetraseal slash/descending thrust, I feel like a different input would be better suited such as a Triangle + Circle combo since IG doesn't really have any moves that use both buttons at once, similarly to how you could shield thrust with a charge blade with the same input at any point in a combo. What I did NOT know however that you have thankfully enlightened me on is the performance of the rising slash with the toggle option turned on. I was under the impression that I had to be holding L2 and tap circle to activate the attack even with focus toggle turned on. And am relieved to know this is not the case. For those of you who may be curious. If you have toggle focus mode turned on, and you hit L2, even just to hold it, it will take you out of focus mode. Most other games tend to approach this differently by allowing the toggle to be a hybrid. You can tap and it will set, tap to unset. But you still have the capability of holding it, even after you initially set it, and it will toggle off when you let go. I hope they implement something like that in the future and hopefully change the charge mechanics because trying to use your thumb to hit several buttons at once while also needing to contend with the camera is difficult. I mainly use aerial glaive for mobility/repositioning, and have played around with the alternate move option in world (where pushing on the left stick is relative to hunter, not monster) as well as switching between target camera vs focus camera (keep monster centered vs not) And tbh it seems really tedious. If I'm going to play a weapon in MH I would much prefer not having to change my base game settings every time I switch to it and have to switch back whenever I change weapons. The fact you can take two weapons with you on a hunt and swap them freely without having to return to the tent further exacerbates this inconvenience. If there was a way to set options for not just melee/ranged weapons and be able to set options presets for each weapon that you deem necessary, I think it would be a nice addition, or like a loadout for your options just like you do for your radial menu, item bar, etc.
as an additional suggestion from other videos I've seen. For controller users, perhaps give some consideration into turning on the gyro controls for aiming for the insect glaive or charge blade. I've found that not all weapons allow you to turn the camera with the left stick (Generally charging attacks or they're your "light attack" that has directional control) Charge blade doesn't get the ability to turn the camera with its triangle combo even though the basic triangle combo doesn't have strafing variants, which is a little jank. Same case with the Element discharges, which is frustrating. Because you can't reposition during the combo anyways.
@Countdownsmiles you can charge and release it yes, but in my opinion with how focus mode works you lose any ability whatsoever to move the camera to fine tune your attack. You would have to claw grip the controller or turn on gyro, which is inconvenient
@Timberpelt That's why the target camera exists? I haven't had any issues with Descending Slash at all. It took a second to wrap my head around but i genuinely think the charge circle input is what makes it good
@@Countdownsmiles i personally am not a fan. Also target cam is good for repositioning but youre already holding L2 or R2 if not both with the glaive. Its a mind fuck for me trying to switch between holding one thing and letting go to tap another thing then go back to holding. Like i said before i think having a charge attack is superfluous. Why cant it just be a normal input or a charge attack that functions like the double slash for CB, or Charged slash for GS? I found myself making weird weak attacks spamming triangle while trying to fit the odd circle charge in there and getting hit or, standing there waiting for the attack to power up. Im not sure why its a charge attack at all instead of a simple tap like how tetraseal was in rise or descending thrust in world. Its just arbitrary and unnecessarily complicates things.
You can start charging the rising slash basically whenever, and you can still use Triangle/Y/Marking attacks while charging. IG is a very different beast from previous games with the new charge finisher, but once you get used to it it's still a lot of fun to spam that finisher after every few attacks, and using the follow-up input whenever you have a wound to pop to regain all your buffs immediately. It's built off of the same foundation so it's pretty quick to readjust. The only thing I don't really like is that the Strong Thrust doesn't override the basic thrust anymore when fully buffed.
Thank you for this!! The changes in this weapon was causing so much friction in my brain and I’m struggling to get used to it or even figure out when certain moves can be triggered. Awesome work.
I think they should revert red extract back to combo upgrade, and allow the glaive to access the new move with all extracts. Instead, they made it the other way around. Also, Capcom need to rework the button mapping for the new moves because it is clunky.
Descending slash is so fuckin cool, you can actually hold B during the animation of other attacks, and it chains into your standard combos so you can Y > Y > Descending Slash > Y > Y > Descending Slash (repeat) for an alternate infinite combo

Nah, i've mained IG since generations and this is the most excited i've been to use the weapon since gen 4. Aerial glaive was a mistake. Helicopter is literally still in the game btw
@@Countdownsmiles Nah. You clearly have a vendetta against aerial players after reading your comments in other reply sections. Aerial glaive was FUN and was the most iconic part of the weapon. a Huge percentage of IG players loved it. Just cause you dont like it doesnt mean it makes any sense to remove it. They could have very easily done everything they did to IG in Wilds while still keeping Aerial. Youve got issues.
@@TheCosmicAstro- honestly. I DO have a vendetta against Aerial glaive. Well, the users at least. I do think there should at least be 1 bounce. Not the giant bug on the arm that's been part of the weapon since the beginning and is literally in the fuckin name? Lol ok bro. My question is if you went back and played GU would the insect glaive be less fun? Because there's no bounce in that game in any style and that's my favorite version of the weapon ever. So if you want to drop the weapon because god forbid there's no bounce, than be my guest but i'm super happy with the weapon so far. Only thing i'd add is an offset attack or perfect dodge because we got hella left out on those.
I can't believe not only they took away the soul of this weapon but they also made the controls janky as hell with the diving wyvern that requires claw grip. WTF Capcom? At least make the controls not painful.
You don't need the claw grip and you can do it after the advancing aerial attack. If you vault into advancing you have plenty of time to hold circle/b/right-click to dive
No they didn't. It feels stronger in the air now than it did in World lol. You can start holding circle during the animation of another move, i've been infinite comboing with descending slash without using claw grip. As long as your thumb is big enough to reach across both Y+B you should never need to use claw grip
Not sure if this a hot take, but with the changes this weapon is the most complex and difficult to master. Tried charge blade for the first time and its pretty comftarble, same with swaxe and gunlance. Still gonna main glaive but i did need to do a bit of labbing.
Not really imo. I think it's actually a lot easier, just have to stay in focus mode at all times lol. It'll charge your kinsect, open wounds and when you get a knockdown go ham with the combos to do big damage. @@jeremiahbelgrave2356staying in focus mode ALL the time isn't really best I've found because, unless I'm misremembering, focus mode attacks cancel your mark order so you stop applying dust effects. I know a lot of IG players don't put a lot of faith in dust but I'm one that find them very useful

I've been having way more fun what this weapon that I thought I would seeing how they heavily nerfed the arial side of it. Although it is a little clunky, I'm really enjoying the technicality of it.
It's still cool and the new attacks are nice but I do think it's a missed opportunity when every other weapon has a clash, offset, or perfect dodge and IG didn't get any on top of losing it's helicopter bounce. IMO the hold down and release attack should have offset properties, would make it more interesting to counter with that and then chain into rising slash.
im still enjoying this iteration of insect glaive but I fell in love with the aerial insect glaive from Rise and it feels like such a down grade to me. Im sure it'll just take some getting used to but for now it just isn't hitting the same :(
How do you "get a mount?" Do you just land on to of them? I find assuming my leaping jumps also incredibly fussy. I know this is just a beta, but one problem I've had with all monster hunters is they don't really have great tutorials (and, in this case, button maps for controllers) for many of the relevant combat features necessary to be effective. For instance, without this video, how was I supposed to know even half this stuff about the Glaive??
Mounting occurs when a certain amount of aerial damage has been taken by the enemy. The first mount takes very little and so it's usually pretty easy to perform on demand with any aerial combo.. The second would be after a fair amount of aerial based hits, and a third usually requires either a very aerial based playstyle or something with tons of health (because they typically die before a third).
@FightinCowboy thanks for this! Do people just learn MH games through trial and error? Or did they explain it once in the first game, and then just assume people will play the first game to learn all the rules for every subsequent game? Also, do you like the "aim lock" system as it is? I feel like it's very difficult to stay focused on the target - especially when vaulting with the glaive - but it could just be my inexperience with the game. Though I don't think my mom or someone with little gaming experience could just pick this game up.
A lot of learning this game comes with knowledge passed down with each new one tbh, the in-game tutorials are traditionally very weak. As for the aim lock (focus) I adjusted to it very fast but we've never had anything like that so having any real aiming potential is general felt pretty huge for me.
I've learned from the comments there are two types of IG players: "but muh deeps" and "helicopter goes burrr lolz." I'm the latter. I'll adjust, but I was real disappointed when I realized you only get one helicopter in the air and can't string together multiple of them.
@@Grandpacha62 It's still more actions in the air than aerial style had in Generations and nobody complained then. Hold circle to charge and release when in the air. You can start charging in the ground or in the air, the important thing is to release in the air. The subsequent combo is automatic
why'd they make the insect glaive suck. it doesn't make sense why they swapped the the Y and B attacks there was no reason to do that and there's not even a setting to change it, and also no helicopter really why ??????
Hold down R2 plus triangle for a few seconds to charge the kinsect throw. It penetreates through at whatever angle you are to the monster. If you want the triple buff from one throw then you have to make sure you position yourself so the kinsects passes through the different buff zones in one throw.
I don't like the hold and release mechanic especially because you have to manage the focus mode also. In my opinion as somebody who played the glaive on MH world it's not that fun anymore, I took the glaive because of the mobility it offered but in wilds it feels very slow compared to world. Especially reposition is difficult now.
Instead we now need all 3 extracts rather than one to use the better moves (which means either sounding for triple extract, or waiting till you get all three), which means early dps suffers, and using rising spiral. Just that. That’s optimal dps.

You have to hold L2 for the kinsect finisher. I think you were only pressing y
i still enjoy IG but this is the worst it has been in a long time. it was way more fun in GU, World and Rise. i wish we at least got the Aerial Style Vault from GU if they're gonna take the helicopter. good thing i use like 7 weapons lmao
But Aerial Glaive only users were literally a hindrance to have in hunts outside of Rise because of it's low damage and I much prefer grounded glaive anyway. You telling every single person in these comments who prefer grounded glaive and arent upset that they have issues tells me that YOU are the one who really has issues here man
@ZariLutus i told one guy he has issues because he got pissy and stroked out that i commented itd be nice if they just kept the bounce...(we were talking in another comment section. I suggest you go read it for context before jumping to such aggressive conclusions)
@@TheCosmicAstro- Oh really, using the same move in the air 3 times is the most iconic part, that thing that's been in only half of it's appearances so far? Not the giant bug on the arm that's been part of the weapon since the beginning and is literally in the fuckin name? Lol ok bro. My question is if you went back and played GU would the insect glaive be less fun? Because there's no bounce in that game in any style and that's my favorite version of the weapon ever. So if you want to drop the weapon because god forbid there's no bounce, than be my guest but i'm super happy with the weapon so far. Only thing i'd add is an offset attack or perfect dodge because we got hella left out on those.
Thanks luv u
For a guide, I understand what I'm supposed to be doing, but not how.
I cant be the Flying Demon Anymore :(
I can't believe not only they took away the soul of this weapon but they also made the controls janky as hell with the diving wyvern that requires claw grip.
@@Countdownsmiles midget IG mains are fuming rn
The only "jank" the weapon has atm is that it's a bit difficult to hit aerial focus strikes. Everything else is honestly quite well implemented
@@naruspheal1831 I haven't even struggled with that tbh. It seems to kinda auto-correct if anything.
I did have get used to the new moves and always being in focus mode but once you get a hang of it it'll be just like old times. I'm really interested in swaxe tho
@bassamromolino ahh yes yes it does cancel the dust, I barely ever use it so it doesn't bother me lol.
@@Orion_Mr.Starlight I didn't have any problems, keeping circle held was weird for like 2 seconds and then it seemed completely op afterwards. I almost feel sorry for the other weapons that they don't have moves with a circle charge input lol
They basically turned Insect Glaive into a charge character 😂
I've been having way more fun what this weapon that I thought I would seeing how they heavily nerfed the arial side of it. Although it is a little clunky, I'm really enjoying the technicality of it.
It's still cool and the new attacks are nice but I do think it's a missed opportunity when every other weapon has a clash, offset, or perfect dodge and IG didn't get any on top of losing it's helicopter bounce.
IMO the hold down and release attack should have offset properties, would make it more interesting to counter with that and then chain into rising slash.
I wish the backflip attack would have a counter or a perfect dodge aspect it has always been one of my favorite moves
@@FightinCowboy yeah that definitely would make it cooler. Man, IG really didn't get anything special now that I think about it, that sucks.
@@lift_4_pancakes339 yeah that would definitely be cool if it had like a special dodge like dual blades and bow
@@FightinCowboy seems likely they consider it's vault ability to be its unique dodge aspect still.
No copter'n breaks my heart 😢
I'm still going to give it a chance though.
I wish it had a perfect dodge or counter
1:40 how you charge the kinsect (?
For ps5, hold R2 then press and hold triangle
im still enjoying this iteration of insect glaive but I fell in love with the aerial insect glaive from Rise and it feels like such a down grade to me. Im sure it'll just take some getting used to but for now it just isn't hitting the same :(
Wait, Powder effect now has its own level?
im spending the entire beta retraining my brain, i keep instinctively trying to aerial ig and its just GONE
I don't even care about dps, i just like doing kung-fu shit on the ground. if something's in the air then i vault but i don't like being forced to play aerial against short monsters and Rise had nothing but aerial glaive support
How do you get all 3 buffs at once?
How do I evade mid air to the direction i want to? It only lets me evade the same way as the first jump
Left stick in direction you wanna go
The hold trigger then O then L2 0 is just fucking absurd in reality
Put it on toggle instead of hold much better
@@FightinCowboy Yea i did that which helped a bit, i heard the devs talk about it and say they're not gonna change it and it should add a level of skill to pull it off. Still tricky to pull off`
NICE VOICE!
Is the powder vortex where the dust all comes together to make an explosion still there?
That was a kinsect bonus in rise, we only got two level 1 kinsect's in the demo. No clue and seeing as this is the world team not rise team, unlikely
Definitely one weapon where back paddles like the Dualsense Edge will come in handy
How do u do that charged bug shot on controller?
I can’t for the life of me figure it out lmao
The button you use to send out the kinsect, hold it then release it
Can someone please explain why i cnt downward thrust, ive tried numerous times in many combos, no matter what i go to chain it in the combo, it jst wont do it its always the other downward spiral move, this a gltich or something as im confised as hell right now???
first you need red buff, and then press R2 + X for flying, after that hold circle until ur weapon become red and release it before landing
@fiellin ahhh didn't know you had to charge it up something they don't really explain to well, definitely changed a fair bit with this weapon
yay
How can i flex on them Rathalos and Legiana?
2:28 WAIT HOW DID YOU DO THE DIVE?
Hold circle to charge and release when in the air. You can start charging in the ground or in the air, the important thing is to release in the air. The subsequent combo is automatic
@@FelipeMannrich thank you, I’ll try it ASAP
World's IG was way better!
Hello how do you send the kinsect to collect all buffs? min 1:40 i think? i use xbox controller
Hold Y and right trigger to aim
@@FightinCowboy Thank you :D
The audio balance on this video is terrible, I can barely hear what you’re saying without turning my volume up to maximum
Sounds about the same as any other video on my side
why'd they make the insect glaive suck. it doesn't make sense why they swapped the the Y and B attacks there was no reason to do that and there's not even a setting to change it, and also no helicopter really why ??????
helicopter is coming back in the full game
My main weapon!!
1:44
Cowboy..what button u trigger to get 3 buff?
I dont know xbox button. can u explain with ps button?
Hold down R2 plus triangle for a few seconds to charge the kinsect throw. It penetreates through at whatever angle you are to the monster.
If you want the triple buff from one throw then you have to make sure you position yourself so the kinsects passes through the different buff zones in one throw.
Xbox to PlayStation
A=X
X= Square
Y= Triangle
B= Circle
LB and RB = L1 and R1
LT and RT (T for trigger) = L2 and R2
Happy hunting :)
Ok I take back what I said about insect glaive…the new rising slash is the more anime than the long sword. It’s a winner
Justice for helicopter!!!
Help im too stupid to translate this into keyboard D;
Bounce is gone cuz the dps would suffer.
Instead we now need all 3 extracts rather than one to use the better moves (which means either sounding for triple extract, or waiting till you get all three), which means early dps suffers, and using rising spiral. Just that.
That’s optimal dps.
Untrue
Don't.
Play MHW!
That’s HOW!
Why run around an EMPTY BORING UGLY WORLD, when MHW exists?
Lmao, that first 5 seconds of EMPTY LAND IS GARBAGE!
And ENTIRE GAME IS LIKE A DS GAME!
3 monster per 4FOOTBALL FIELDS!
Just EMPTY BLAND BROWN AND GREY, with some Bland Yellow!
Not to mention GARBAGE CONTROL!
