Les Sauvages
(transcribed for baroque guitar by Elias Conrad)
Audio & Video: Elias Conrad
Luthier: Hendrik Hasenfuss
Jean Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) is not only widely acclaimed as a theoretician of music, but also one of the most imaginative composers of his time. His revolutionary operas were the first national creations to rival those of Lully and his works and methods for harpsichord show his immens innovative power. One of those works is 'Les Sauvages' from 'Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de Clavecin', which starts at 01:10 in a transcribed version for baroque guitar by Elias Conrad. This piece also appears in his opera 'Les Indes Galantes' with the added chorus 'Forêts paisibles'.
After graduating at the University Mozarteum Salzburg the german guitarist and lute player Elias Conrad continued his lute studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. He is laureate of numerous international competitions, such as Concorso Maurizio Pratola L‘Aquila (IT), Saarland culture prize (GER), London Young Ensemble Competition (GB), "Rheinsberger Hofkapelle 20/21" (GER) and cultur prize of the city Coburg.
As lutenist he was involved in numerous productions with famous soloists, like Andreas Scholl and renowned ensembles, such as Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Nordic Symphony Orchestra Estonia, Ensemble Mare Nostrum and his own ensembles Mozaïque, Fabridoen and MokkaBarock. He performed at major festivals, like Oude Muziek Festival Utrecht, MA-festival Bruges, Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, Festival Barocco Alessandro Stradella di Viterbo e Nepi and Grandezze e Meraviglie.

Bonsoir Élias, très belle interprétation. Les sonorités de la guitare baroque sont exceptionnelles, surtout quand c’est magnifiquement joué ainsi ! Bravo
I wouldn't imagine that this piece would fit the baroque guitar so perfectly. This is one of the best renditions of Les Sauvages I have heard of for a very long time. Please upload more! :)
That's great!
Ah ! What a wonderful performance and interpretation of the piece. You made it your own while respecting the music. So much better than a ‘note perfect’ but boring playing. You brought the music to live. Thank you.
Very beautiful interpretation.
Great work! The transcription, the performance, the audio, the video! Hat off!

Very nice, personal and seemless interpretation. You really make this piece your own and it feels as if it had just been written. Jean-Philippe would be impressed I'm sure! ;)
Hello. I love your Rameau's transcriptioins and the way you play it ! Do you have a written score of these transcriptions ? I'd love to play the sarabande or Les Sauvages on archlute... Thank you very much !
Estás en mi tarea de música
Very good! Is the introduction an improvisation?
Clio An Yes, it’s improvised.
