I’m Jordan, an incoming freshman at Harvard University. This is the second video in my How I Got Into Harvard series. Next videos include: reading my Common Application essay, reviewing my extracurriculars, and my favorite college application tips.

What general questions do you have on the college process? I’m thinking of uploading an application timeline and a Q&A. Thoughts?
I am just thinking about the extracurriculars that would help....🤔🤔
Know any extracurriculars that would help??
I have a question about the essays because I’m not really excited about writing several essays 😬
900 900 i’ll be going over my extracurriculars in my next video (which i’ll probably upload tomorrow because i have a lot of work tonight rip)

I go to a specialized high school too! I was so surprised to hear you say that you went to one.
Guysysysyys so I’m a freshman and I’m really really nervous about my future. I’m in an IB school, but for my last three years I will transfer to a normal, regular high school. My problem is that I’m scared of failing and not being smart enough. ;-; *sigh* one can hope I suppose. Thanks for reading my rant.
Fandom Lover let me tell you something: YOU WILL NOT FAIL. YOU ARE SMART. YOU WILL BE OKAY. i promise you, as long as you put in the hard work and remind yourself everyday of what your greater goals are, you will end up successful. high school is hard, but it isn’t impossible! i believe in you ◡̈
The Queen Next Door Thank you so much! I promise to not be negative to myself or be really anxious about the future. Again, thank you so much and *I’m about to say what all mothers say* God bless you. 💖

Lol u better work hard and find a passion
That’s good. Because when u know what u want when your younger, you’ll get more opportunities to achieve it other than adults looking for a last minute college to get into!
@@bryanv.3630 Hehe Ik! My passion is DEFININTELY Biology. I wanna become a Medical Scientist when I grow up, mostly because I want to help the world and find cures to things (Especially Diabetes)! And in general I find the human body to be absoutely fascinating!!
@@zamallama469 ^~^
Honestly start working hard, please don’t procrastinate lol, especially in high school, do extracurriculars and find something you’re really passionate about. Since biology is something you enjoy, when you’re in high school you should enroll is some kind of medical programs during the summer, at least that’s what is offered at my school.
Omg I got a 1470 too!
Exactly! I don’t get why they require SAT Subject Tests and APs. That’s just dumb 🙄 (5:38)
Wait, I saw you in the Bronx Science roll call. I'm an incoming freshman to Bronx Science, so that's really awesome.
yurr!!!
@@happiejordan I'm really happy about getting in Bronx Science, but I want to know what extracurriculars at Bronx Science would you recommend for a freshman/sophomore?
honestly just do whatever you like! you should spend your first two years figuring out what you’re passionate about. join as many clubs/activities as you can (you can always just stop going if its not for you or just go to club meetings every other week if theyre too much). don’t be afraid to do things outside of school too; my most impactful extracurriculars were found outside of bxsci
@@happiejordan My other question is, how did you manage time between your workload from your AP classes and all the extracurriculars you were in?
prioritize things by urgency and importance + get to know how long it takes you to finish certain assignments. actually use your planner (bxsci gives u a free one), plan out your days in 15-30 minute intervals, finish quick assignments (usually math or chem worksheets) during free periods/lunch (the day theyre assigned, not the day theyre due). my most important tip is ONLY DO THINGS YOU LIKE!! that includes taking honor/AP classes in subjects you enjoy and doing extracurriculars you look forward to
I did the math its a 3.77 on a 4.0 scale

Hey! I absolutely loved your informative video. It really made me really happy that I may still have a chance at these prestigious colleges but I somehow still can’t find summer programs that allow me to fully show my passion for writing. I’m not extremely good at writing but it’s something that I have loved since I’ve ever touched a pencil. Can you give me some advice or list some activities that I can do to fully show my passion? Hello cate,I'm an Iranian student and I wanna study in us but I don't know what I need for us colleges.I have a GPA 19.44 from 20 score. and need someone to help me in this case
@@rezag1015 - Hi, Reza! I’m sorry this is quite late, but I believe your grades convert to a 4.0 GPA (perfect score) - great job! My advice to you is to study as much as you can for the TOEFL (it’s the English proficiency test that international students take for American universities). I know you can do it and you'll do great! You can apply through the Common App, which is the website for college admission applications for undergraduate students (1 in 10 applicants on it are international). If you're interested in universities such as Georgetown, Rutgers, MIT, University of California (UC) colleges, University of Texas (UT) colleges, and some SUNY (State University of New York) colleges, I should note that they are not on it for some reason, but I recommend you stick with colleges that are just on the Common App because it is MUCH easier and better overall that way - trust me. All you need is a laptop and phone to apply.
To my knowledge, this is everything you need to submit:
- Personal info (demographics, phone number, & email address)
- Transcript (this is a list of all your classes and grades + your GPA)
- Extracurriculars List (any activities you did while in high school)
- Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT; take as many times as possible)
- English proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, iTEP, PTE Academic)
- Personal Statement/General Essay + Supplements (school-specific essays)
- Letters of Recommendations (generally 1-2; generally two from teachers and one from your guidance counselor if you have one)
- Student VISA (the requirements for the Student VISA application process differ by school, so I would definitely encourage you to call or email the school's admissions office directly because it's important to make sure)
- Financial documents (bank statement, sponsor documentation, financial aid such as the International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA), school-specific forms, the CSS Profile, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if eligible, and anything else you may need)
- Important: Make sure to also call the school as early on as possible to request a fee waiver and see if you are eligible to receive one. If you receive one, it just means that you will not have to pay for the application fee.
- Important: Look into whether you need to get your transcript translated, as it must be submitted as soon as possible and is very important.
Again, these requirements can vary by school, but you should check out this resource for a general idea: www.ccny.cuny.edu/isss/newstudents)
I would also like to direct you to this resource, as it provides an overview of important factors to consider, outlines specific steps and requirements, and connects you with resources such as advisors who specialize in the application process for international students: www.collegeadvisor.com/resources/international-student-college-application-guide

I’m about to be a sophomore and I’m scared that there is nothing important about me. What should I do?
you just finished your first year!!!! most people dont have anything impressive to put on their application until the end of sophomore/junior years. you should do what you ENJOY, not what you think colleges will like. admissions officers can tell if you did something just to put it on your application. join clubs you’re interested in, take challenging classes you’re interested in, and you’ll be fine
jay space thank you so much! I was really worried there😤
@Clogged Sink heyy! I’m about to be a senior as well! And same Junior yr was tough, but some of the stuff I was able to do was start/run a self care account, tutored kids in math (which was amazing btw), I also started this information session about 8th graders transitioning into middle school during the pandemic, and I’m in NHS. But idk, I still feel like the things I did aren’t/ won’t be good enough :/

I 'm currently a junior in high school and have around a 3.86 GPA on a 4.0 scale
No ACT or SAT so far (:(((( corona),
I managed to get an internship through a co-op (main EC) at my hospital working in ICU, Inpatient surgery, etc.
Some other E.C includes volunteering summer camps all four years, getting promoted to a youngest-ever counsellor (paid)
And I'm trying to write a novel, to publish.
I know you can't say definitely but do you think I should use my Early decision for Harvard or an 'easier' ivy school. Obviously, you don't need to reply or explain but if you can I would really appreciate it!
apply to harvard early action if it’s your favorite, not because you wanna play the numbers game! its not necessarily easier to get into a school early action v. regular decision; if a school would accept you regular decision, they would accept you early and vise versa. if you apply to your favorite school and get in early, you just saved yourself a lot of time and money :)

I’m gonna take AP bio this year 😭 any advice?
Study, and do well on the test.😁😁 Good luck.
MAKE YOUR OWN STUDY GUIDES! this definitely helped me the most in studying for my AP exams, especially bio. ap bio is a very memorization + concept-heavy course. in order to succeed in it, you have to actually understand the concepts so take your time while studying!! when making your own study guide, summarize processes in your own words :) good luck!!
Amoeba Sisters, Khan Academy, & old Collegeboard practice tests!
I really really want to get into Harvard but I know it’s not going to happen. I’m going into highschool soon and in middle school I had pretty rocking grades except for a few Bs here and there. I got into honors history and English but I feel like I’m going to be overwhelmed considering I want to do a sport/create a mock trial club. How did you deal with stress or burnout trying to get straight As/maintain them?
Milly Ponce-Mondragon thank you!
Teddi Papish wow am in the same exact predicament i just scared about gettting burned out
don’t count yourself out!! harvard hires people to decide whether or not the school is for you, let them do their job and just put yourself out there regardless. it’s definitely possible to take multiple honors classes and start/lead a club. get a planner and actually use it so you stay organized! plan ahead when you know youre gonna be busy. to avoid (or minimize) burnout, only do things that you truly enjoy. take honors classes in subjects you LIKE and participate in clubs that align with your passions. this way itll feel like youre having fun, not just doing work
I hope you see this even though it’s long after this video !
I hope the fall semester is going well for you!!!
I would love your input on something. Sorry this is kinda long:
I go to a public high school in LA county. My school is decently competitive, and we have most of the AP classes offered. A local community college offers college classes to high school students as a kind of dual enrollment. So far I have taken 2 classes that work for APUSH and ap gov credit, and it is weighted extra (5 points instead of 4-on a 4.0 scale-like an AP). I had a 4.26 cumulative gpa at the end of June 2019. After 3 summer classes at the college/the supplemental ap classes, I now have a 4.35 gpa. If I take the classes I intend to over winter and spring, I have a projected 4.52 gpa by the end of June 2020. Do you think if I continue to keep taking these community college classes (and get A’s) instead of some of the AP classes, will it look good to colleges or will it look like an “easy way out” of AP classes? If you’re at this point, thank you for reading this!
jasmine dual enrollment and AP classes are viewed as about the same; one isn’t better than the other. as long as you take rigorous classes that you enjoy (and do well in them), you won’t be seen as if you’re taking an easy way out. also, i’m not sure if you know, but many colleges recalculate your gpa if it’s weighted.p, just a heads up. i hope this was helpful ◡̈
The Queen Next Door recalculated as in put onto a 4.0 scale? Thank you for replying ☺️
jasmine yes, 4.0 or 100. No problem ◡̈
Hey! I know I might be a little late but I was wondering if I could ask a couple questions. I’m going into my freshman year and I don’t know what to focus on, I like swimming, soccer, trumpet, piano, math, and Spanish. I have no idea what to focus on any advice?
you’re a freshman, you don’t have to “focus” on anything! if you’re interested in spanish, take it consistently throughout your four years. if you’re interested in math, try to take honors/ap/ib/dual enrollment math classes available to you as soon as you can and continue with them. if you like swimming and soccer, maybe tryout for the team. if you like trumpet and piano, see if there’s a band or club in your school you can join. even if you don’t stick with them, the key thing about your freshmen/sophomore years is exploring and trying new things. it’s okay if you don’t stick with all of them, but try them all and stick with the ones you love :)
I’m doing a school program where I go to my community college for my last 2 years of high school because my school doesn’t have the best education and class selection. Would top schools find that impressive or a negative aspect of me?
it’ll look very impressive as long as you succeed and get good grades in those classes ◡̈
jay space Great! Hoping to go to a top school like Harvard so I’m doing a bunch of research trying to make myself look impressive

Hey everyone I have a question. I am in 8th grade going to a high school that offers 21 AP classes. I'm struggling because I dont know how many I should take or apply for. I have heard many ivy leagues look for a certain number of rigorous classes that applicants take. I really want to apply for ivy leagues on the future but I am afraid if i take too many i will screw everything up. How many AP classes do you advise for a freshman?? Keep in mind that they dont hold it against someone if their school does not offer many but mine does so I'm really confused.
take as many as you can handle while still getting good grades (what good is taking an AP class if you fail it). i didn’t take any until my sophomore year but you can take one (ap world probably) in your freshman year!
@@happiejordan Thank you so much for the advice! You are incredible and such an inspiration!

Hi! For your transcripts, do you send semester grades only? Or do you also send your quarter grades? (I asked my school & they said it depends on the uni)
you send three sets of grades to harvard. when you apply by nov. 1 or jan. 1, you send your most up to date transcript that has all of your grades from freshmen to junior year. once you complete your first semester of senior year (end of january), you send that report card. after you get admitted, you also send your final report card from senior year (june).
For your transcripts, will they only include semester grades? & tysmm!!!💖💖
By all of ur grades.. did u mean the high school yrs or quarter + semester grades? Sorry, I’m a tad bit confused♥️
your transcript will include your first AND second semester grades (and third if your school as trimesters) for your freshmen, sophomore, and junior years. some schools give out progress reports and official transcripts/report cards. your school will send colleges the official one + your first semester senior year grades. i hope this clears things up :)

REZA GARAVAND i don’t think taking this test will help you. since you’re a high schooler, you’d be applying to harvard college. the college doesn’t accept the GRE because it’s only used in the graduate school application process. other harvard schools (like law, medicine, divinity, education, business, etc) consider this in their applicants, but you can only apply to those once you graduate from a college with a four year, bachelor’s degree :) your application will not be harmed by you not taking AP/IB exams because they’re not available to you

REZA GARAVAND if it’s available to you, you can try taking the biology and chemistry sat ii subject texts. harvard recommends sending two subject tests, so if you take those and score well, they can fulfill that part of your application. if you can’t take those exams, don’t worry about it! take advanced/honors biology and chemistry classes and do well in them. you don’t have to TAKE some kind of national exam

take your grades seriously!! Strive for straight a's so you won't have to freak out about your gpa not being what you want once college admissions come around. it depends on how low your sat score is and how good your extracurriculars and essays are. if you’ve only taken the sat once or believe you can get a better score, try studying more for it and take it again in the summer. if not, focus on doing something cool this summer and start working on your essays

i’m not too sure! starting in the 2019-2020 application season, harvard will no longer accept AP credits so my guess is that they won’t take dual enrollment either
What is AP?
what major did you apply with?
biological sciences, but now i'm studying physics
The Queen Next Door ahh okay do you think that ur subject test scores mattered in your admission? Bc I was going to apply as a neuroscience major however my sat II score in chemistry is a 670 :((
do you think I still have a chance to be admitted if I only submit the two 4s I got on AP exams ( I didn’t get any 5s)
everyone has a chance to be admitted, regardless of what AP scores you submit. AP scores don’t matter too much in the application process. how many scores are you not submitting?
oh okay thank you!! I was just concerned because a lot of the people that got in got at least one 5 & i took 5 AP exams and I got 3s on 3 of them and 4s on 2 so I was just going to submit the 4s
that’s not too bad, so don’t worry :) what matters more are your grades in those classes where you got the 3s.
What is the better SAT or GPA?
the higher, the better
Do you go to Dominican???
Did you go to Stuy? Brooklyn Tech?
Hilo Palin bronx science
Am i able to go to harvard with an 89.2 unweighted gpa? Like ur channel
Did you have to take a language in high school
yes, for at least three years so we could take the state exam for it
The Queen Next Door same 😔
Mine was only 2
What is your GPA?
Nahomy 93.9, in the video i break down how many APs and honors courses i took
you so cute
This is absolutely useless for us Asians!!!
If we Asian students got what you got, we would have no chance!!!!
What applied to you does not apply to us because of our skin and race...
there are asians who got into harvard with the same scores as me and some have even lower scores. the college application process is wholistic, meaning you can’t JUST have good grades or good extracurriculars. you need to be a well-rounded individual who’s passionate and dedicated to the things they’re interested, whether that’s academic or not.
I am banana man poo poo pow Wana man
