  • How to sow Sweet Peas | How to Grow Sweet Peas | Spring Sown Sweet Peas | Green Side Up
Today I am sowing sweet peas, at this time of the year the method changes from how I sow them in the Autumn. In the Autumn I want quite a bit of compost for the plants as they will be growing in the polybags for around 5 months and they will have time to grow a good root structure. Spring sown sweet peas will be growing for a shorter space of time so need less space, less compost and I actively encourage the roots to grow well by growing in root trainers.
I talk a little about two different types of root trainers and my thoughts on those and why I chose what I use. I show my autumn sown sweet peas and then we get on with sowing after first soaking the seeds the day before. Pro advice is to not soak or chit, I soak them because I always have done and it works for me.

I love sweet peas Steve and I’ve never soaked the seeds before but will be trying that method now. All that you explained about the root training cells makes a whole lot of sense, thanks for those tips as well. Happy gardening 😊

    Hi Steve.
Just a thought. The deep root trainer type tray you showed would it not be possible to burn
Out the bottoms so they are straight through to enable you to push out the plant easier.
Just a thought so you can make good use of them.
    All the best.

Thanks for the video, I sowed some expensive sweet peas in the autumn and only one germinated out of about forty, either mice ate them or they rotted or were slugged, so this time I shall follow your method and hopefully be more successful.

I agree if your method works why change it if we all do the same thing life would be boring i like watching your methods and if I'm having bother with my method i give your way a go sometimes a bit of both methods works a treat i used to grow my sweetcorn in them root trainer trays and they went backwards on planting out obviously i must have been damaging the roots but since i changed to the root trainer cassettes i have had no trouble they grow on great haven't seen Tony on as much hope he ok

Hi Steve what do you think of using toilet rolls for starting off the seeds? I've been saving them but noticed last year that the carrots roots came out the sides. Not sure if it is something I did wrong or were they too wet?

Slug pellets are so damaging to wildlife, so disappointing to see you use them.
