    To be clear as well, Thiem uses the 18 x 20 version and he has head grip plates on them instead of Babolat's. I personally have 2 16 x 19s and love them. Spin and power for days!

    I have a Pure Strike 3rd gen 16x19, awesome frame but too harsh on my arm, I´ve been playing with syn gut and repacled the original grip with a grip from Artengo, so far so good, 3 months in and my arm certainly feels more the impact if compared to my Vcores HD but nothing really worrying, not pain or anything the day afetr a long hit.
    I´ve been trying to buy a second 16x19 but it has proven to be almost an impossible task where I live, I managed to find a new 18x20, thats why I landed on this video, I used to play with 18x20, it has been my preferred pettern until my stint with the Pro Staff and now that I´ve switched to the Pure Strike, is not a new experience for me to play with this pattern but this time I want to pair it with the 16x19 and make them play as close to each other as possible. Your video gives me an incredible insight and I think it´s safe to say they both play quite similar.
    What would you say is the best way to make them play as close as possible? I play with Yonex Dynawire syn gut at 48 pounds.
    Thanks.

    Great review... I’m really having a hard time choosing between the pure strike 18x20 , Wilson blade 18x20 and the head gravity pro. Which is better all around for a 4.0 player w/ a one handed back hand, hard hitter, full swing?

      I would go pure strike. I find the new Blades underpowered for today's game. The Gravity is very wide which may feel a bit clunky for a one hander. All are great racquets though, and I think you'd be happy with any if them. Its a tough choice.

    Hi, good video, I want to buy a racquet and im between this pure strike 98 16x19 and the head graphene 360 + Speed Pro but i cant decide, I play always on clay, and my style would be like offensive baseliner with topspin in both strokes but not too much. Is one a racquet better overall than the other?or the advantages of each one. Im looking for control, feel but without losing so much power, I would love if you can help me decide THANKS!

      I would actually consider the 18x20 Strike over the 16x19. The 18x20 Strike's string pattern is more open than the Speed Pro. I prefer the Strike because it has more inherent stability due to the stiffness. I found the Speed Pro to be a bit unstable against harder hitters.
      I would actually recommend the EZone 98, I think it sits pretty much in between these racquets in terms of feel and power. You may need to add some weight in the tip to get it to the spec you need though.

      @@pipazoaznee6204 yes we have a review on that racquet posted as well. If you know you like the Speed, its a good choice, but I think there are better racquets of similar spec out there. It's nice that it has a lower stiffness, so comfort is better than any Pure Strike. You can get quite a lot of spin from the Speed MP and good blend of power and control. I prefer the Yonex and Strike from a feel standpoint though, I think they feel more solid if that makes sense.

  • @eduardinodecielo

    Best racquet ever. I'm State Senior Champion in Spain (National Champion in Doubles) and after 4 years playing with Pure Strike 16/19 I realized I was wasting my time. Customized with silicone at handle and lead at 3 and 9. You get more spin and speed without sacrificing control.
    Playing tennis takes on a new dimension with RPM POWER.
    It's the greatest evolution in tennis strings after the appearance of the gut and copolyester.
    It's a type C copolyester that does not require pre-stretching (it is stretched at the factory) and whose maximum recommended tension is 23kg (25 has Thiem, but he's a professional).
    It has a high playability and maintains tension excellently. It allows for very high effects, facilitating topspin and under spin. The contact and connection with the ball is maximum.
    The gut and nylon strings also needed to be repositioned with the fingers, and it wasn't a problem; what's more, in some cases, it's a great way to stay focused during points.
    Dominic Thiem really uses it, and we are talking about a tennis player who has the best Babolat technology at his disposal. He switched from gut with RPM Blast, then colored versions of the same string, and finally opted to use experimental HEAD string to get his victory at Indian Wells (defeating Federer). After that, he gave the step to RPM POWER and has not taken a step back, obtaining the best sporting successes from him and his first Grand Slam.
    That string does not need to be edged to produce the highest Revolutions Per Minute, as can be seen in Thiem's beastly way of powering the ball now, who actually uses that string (The fans should be grateful for that).
    I have visited the Babolat string factory and had the string used by Nadal in my hand. When it was yellow, he used Babolat Duralast (Moyá also in another color). On the yellow string, it was printed in black PRO HURRICANE NADAL. That yellow string had no edges and produced a beastly effect, thanks to the fact that the polyester grabs the ball on contact and makes it rise very easily. The problem is that it loses tension and playability in a very few minutes, with the aggravation that it is very hard and causes shoulder injuries in the long run (Nadal and Moyá were affected). Later another black string was created for Nadal, but that is not RPM Blast. That string of Rafa, has RPM NADAL 1.35 written in white and has no edges (it is cylindrical and does'nt have eight faces). That black string is no longer made of polyester, but of copolyester, which is a material that reaches more speed, and arm friendly.
    According to the technicians who make Babolat strings, using 8 faces on textured strings is the best option. Profiles with fewer edges (4-sided or 5-sided), facilitates the topspin effect for amateurs, but sacrificing precision. It is because those geometries (4 or 5 faces) at the time of stringing can be more or less twisted. This greater or lesser twist can make the edges more alive or less in some areas of the string bed. Those textured strings are only valid for amateurs, but the professional cannot depend on these random variables.

    • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  3 года назад +1

      Totally agree on your thought with RPM Power. It's a truly unique string with unparalleled consistency and control. The launch angle is shocking predictable for a poly. I think that string is partial to blame for Thiem success. The low launch angle really helps him on fast courts. The ball stays in and penetrates the court beautifully!

    Beckett, I have to differ on the power and launch angle idea. Yes less strings change the launch angle, but they do give more power too. Given same tension on both patterns, and everything else equal...the more strings, the less trampoline effect, the less pace, depth, and angle change you get. And vice versa for less strings. IOW...The more open the pattern, the more stretch on the strings, and more spring. (Given the tension ranges we typically go for). Maybe the launch angle is what you notice more in your tennis. Do you feel so?

    • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  4 года назад +1

      You raise some interesting points. I see you point about the increased string stretch, and I can see how that would return more energy to the ball. I think any extra stretching would be extremely minor and have a negligible effect on ball speed. I don't think I can actually hit the ball faster between different string patterns. I personally don't even feel like tension effects my ball speed. I would say I am very sensitive to launch angle, so its possible that I cannot isolate for ball speed because I am having to compensate for the changing launch angle.

    How is the comfort of both strikes when strung with e.g. natgut/poly hybrid or something like Triax? And will they be too powerful?
    I am a beginner, but I am strongg and very tall, so when i can setup a shot and use my body to step into a ball i hit a heavy fast ball which can sail long. However, as I am a beginner I most of the time cannot setup probably and could use some free power. Hence, I am strugling to find the right racket that gives control but also has some free power! I now playing with TF40 315 (which is 8gr above spec, shame on you technifibre !) plays very nice when I have the time, wonderful volley and slice, but I struggle when I am put under pressure. Hence I am looking to the pure strikes as an alternative. I tend to play with Triax strings, womderfully comfy in the TF40 and provides some extra power.

    • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  3 года назад

      Wow 8g over spec! That's awful hahaha. Yeah you should get pretty similar performance in terms of feel and power with the TF40 and the Strike. I think the Strike has a bit more power, but Triax can be strung pretty high and still feel good.

      In the 16x19 pattern, the launch angle is pretty similar. I'd say general feel is similar too, both feeling firm, but comfortably muted. I think i can get better spin out of the Strike due to the heavier feel of the racquet. Both are very stable and offer lots of power. Pure Drive feels more maneuverable which helps me get out of tricky situations more easily, but the Strike holds up to long hard rallies better.

    • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  4 года назад

      You definitely can. Case and point is that Thiem uses the 18x20 version of the Strike. The 18x20 is very open in the Strike relative to other 18x20's, while the Blade 16x19 is quite closed, relative to other 16x19's. Given the added stiffness in the Strike, I'd say you are looking at pretty comparable levels of spin in the 18x20 Strike to the 16x19 Blade.

      I see your point on this one, but I'll tell you why I wouldn't. If you break a string, you will have to adjust to the new string pattern. It can ruin your match if you have to retune your strokes half way through a set. Although I personally collect racquets, for actual matches and training, I keep things as consistent as possible because I like the feeling of grooving my strokes.

      @@CourtsideSportsLTD Well Noted and thank you for the fast response!! I'm trying to change from the pure aero 2019 to a more controlled racket and I've narrowed down my choice to either the wilson blade v7 16x19 or the purestrike gen 3 18x20.(No 18x20 v7 in Indonesia, not popular enough to hold large stocks of them )
      How would you compare the two in terms of power, spin, etc? Long story short, I can't demo rackets in Indonesia :( and I've only tested my friend's cv blade 18x20(to test out the blades) and purestrike gen 3 18x20 for several sessions.
      A lot of reviewers are saying that the v7 blade have such low power that moving from 18x20 cv to 16x19 v7 should be done for some players. The string setup might have affected the testing though, because the PS had 52lbs lux alu while the Blade had 49lbs black widow at 18, and it felt like it had higher tension to me than the PS. It's probably quite a hail mary if I choose the 16x19 v7 rather than the PS 18x20 right?
      Sorry I'm rambling but I would like to know your opinion on this! Thanks alot!

    • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  4 года назад +1

      @@nevinliauw Thanks for the background, makes it easier to make a good recommendation.
      I would say the string patterns on the PA and PS 16x19 are pretty similar in terms of openness, so the control off the stringbed would be the same. If you are struggling with launch angle or erratic hits, this change may not be enough.
      I agree that the Blades are much lower on power than ever before, the 18x20 v7 feels like a soft board.
      This leaves us with were you left us, 16x19 v7 or PS 18x20. I feel like the Strike offers more spin and power, despite the string pattern. The Blade is more precise and control oriented. Since you are coming from the PA, I'd probably go Strike, unless you really want to concentrate on hitting the ball cleanly and playing attacking tennis.

    • @nevinliauw
      @nevinliauw 4 года назад +1

      @@CourtsideSportsLTD Thank you for the insights and advice! I would have thought that the PS 16x19 have a tighter pattern compared to the PA, but I've never tried it before. I do really enjoy flattening the shots with the 18x20 PS and the 18x20 CV Blade, and felt that I could still produce enough spin since I was fine in hitting spins with both the blade and the PS 18x20. ( turns out I did not rely on the spin machine so much for spin :D)
      But I think what made up my mind is your last sentence whether I'd want to concentrate on hitting the ball cleanly and playing attacking tennis. By no means am I a competitive tennis player playing tournaments. I am more of a "competitive" recreational players playing 2-3 times weekly with friends that are quite on the same boat (tennis school since we were 4-5, competitive tennis until around high school but not in college). and like u said in the review it's not as hard to get into compared to the blades, even if I could get used to the CV Blade 18x20 and just purchase the same model. • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  4 года назад

      If you swing quite hard, the 18x20 can help you keep the ball in the court (think Thiem). If you find yourself dropping the ball short because of your topspin (think Nadal) then 16x19 may be better. The pattern mostly affects launch angle, the tighter the pattern, the lower the ball will shoot off the strings.

    For someone who feels like they don't have mastery of top spin would 18x20 overall just suit me better? I feel like I've always gone with 16x19 because of the top spin this top spin that but have never really even tried an 18x20

    • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  4 года назад +5

      Interesting question. If we look at the pros, the two players with some of the highest mastery of topspin are Nadal and Thiem. Nadal uses 16x19, while Thiem uses 18x20. While the 16x19 may offer greater spin potential, it is still just POTENTIAL. Unless you are operating at the upper levels of spin, changing patterns won't have a huge effect on your ability to hit spin. It's more about which pattern gives you the confidence to swing the fastest. Nadal has a tendency to hit short when he isn't feeling great, so the more open 16x19 pattern will help him with depth. Thiem, on the other hand, hits long when he isn't feeling great, so the tighter 18x20 helps him control that depth to keep the ball in the lines.
      In you hit short, the 16x19 will be better, if you hit long, I'd choose the 18x20.

      I prefer the EZone in most ways. A bit of led at 12 o clock will bring the spin and power levels up near the Strike, making it one of the best 98's on the market.

      Probably the 16x19 because it feels a bit softer outside the stringbed, but string pattern doesn't really have an effect on the forgiveness because, in theory, it does not change how energy is transfer from your swing to the ball. Weight, swing weight, balance, beam design and stiffness are your keys to forgiveness.

      I think the Gravity Pro is a better racquet, but the Strike 18x20 suits me game better. It swings faster than the Gravity, but it doesn't feel as nice, have the same predictable response or control. The Gravity feels more solid and more responsive. The Strike can be a bit too muted at times. The Strike is way more forgiving which is it's redeeming quality in my opinion. A good blend of forgiveness, plow through and a dense string pattern.

      @@Jay-m2c9z Interesting point. In my opinion, the Pure Strike and the Pure Aero feel very similar in terms of spin production, regardless of Babolat's marketing. The difference is going to be power, as you said, with the Aero being more powerful, but the Strike being more controlled.

    How did you compare it with head extreme tour?

    • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  3 года назад

      The Extreme Tour has a much more response feel, while the Strike is more muted. The Extreme is a bit more demanding to use, in that you really need to hit the centre of the stringbed, whereas the Strike handles off-centre shots much better. Spin is pretty similar, I think the increased maneuverability gets you a bit more spin on the Extreme, but the wide open string pattern on the Strike can help with overall topspin. If you are willing to customize the racquet with lead, I think the Extreme is a better choice for most players, if not, the Strike will probably be better

    Fantastic review. Thank you!!!
    I am wanting to try something different after decades with very few rackets I actually liked.
    As I have all along been only a weekend warrior, I have not invested
    time or money in trying a lot of rackets. A Pro Staff user much of my past,
    I was using a Wilson K Pro Staff 88 Pete Sampras model until switching to the
    Volkl Power Bridge 10 Mid (with lead added at 3 and 9).
    There is a lot I like about this
    racket, hence my staying with it so long, but I am sure out there I may fnd one I like more.
    With a full swing I am used to generating racket head speed with a racket well over 11 ounces strung, and though older now, I like that inertia to keep from getting pushed around by power hitters (including at the net). The Volkl (with the lead) is neither too heavy nor too light for my taste.
    I am considering a Wilson Pro Staff RF 97 Autograph (but have never tried one) or the Babolat
    Pure Strike 98 18x20 you just reviewed. Both have gotten good reviews of course. So, as I am a player with a full court
    game, Semi-Western FH, and a one-handed BH, who likes to hit with extreme spin, likes to drive flat, and is not above winning ugly.. (any port in a storm!) Do you have any thoughts or advice on how they are different in ways that might matter for someone like me, or any other racket advice (besides demoing them both of course)?
    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    • @CourtsideSportsLTD
      @CourtsideSportsLTD  4 года назад

      Yes! Tennis Warehouse University has a Vibration Frequency index. I found that racquet I like, (eg. VCore 95, Pure Storm 2009, Gravity MP) as had a VFI within 1 point. They also have a blurb there explaining what it is, and I think it describes "feel" much better than RA does.
      I have also found that k6.1 users seem to like the VCore 95 and pre k6.1 seem to like the new Prestige Pro.
      Not sure what Sampras is using now, but I remember he switched to the Pure Storm in retirement, which exists today as the Pure Strike VS. People say it feels different though, so customization may be necessary.
      Other than that, I can't offer more advice because I haven't actually used any of the racquets you have used.

      @@CourtsideSportsLTD Thanks for pointing me towards that resource. Too many rackets and too little time! (LOL)
      At my age, I may have to rethink heavier to avoid injury. When younger, I was doing fingertip pushups in an Eagle Claw school (and much more). Responsibilities and so-so knees (as well as Covid) have forced me to reduce my workouts a lot. But I want to be able to swing a stick that helps me put people on the defensive, when I have the opportunity to take control of the point (ie: allows me to easily hit a heavy, penetrating shot).
      May I ask what your preference is and why? Your day to day go to stick, racket weight, string tension, vibration index, and why that is your choice? Maneuverabliity at the net? Plow through? Balance of Power and Control? And, have you customized it? Clearly you have tried dozens of setups, and are adept at evaluating each.

      @@michaelperrone9823 Current racquet is Yonex VCore 95 with 6g lead at 12, leather grip leading to around 350g, 335SW, 31.5cm balance strung full poly in the high 40's. The idea behind this stick was to force me to swing hard, as my hitting partners were regularly backing me up or pushing me around when I played my stock 2013 APD. The setup forced me to keep my weight moving forward into the ball to control the point. I picked something that wouldn't let me go back to old "pusher" habits.
      The Idea Behind the Weight: Another reason I selected the VCore 95 is that it has a lower twistweight than more modern racquets. I read Nadal used a low twistweight with a high SW to help him adjust the angle of the racquet face to help create massive spin. Rafa was my favourite player growing up, so I (attempted) to model my game around his (failed hahaha). Basically I like the plow and power from a high SW, but I like retaining as much maneuverability, hence the low twistweight.
      Now I feel like I have learned my lesson in stepping in the ball, and I just want to win more matches, so I'm looking for something more forgiving on defense. Something 98-10, stiffness around 65RA with 22mm ish beam width, that I will mostly just add weight at 12 a clock. Series on the racquet search process is in the works.

You have given me a lot to think about, as well as a desire to wrap my head around "twistweight", something i admit I have never even heard of, or thought about. I ight have to try a Yonex. That is something I have often thought of, in part because the frame shape of some apparently allowed for a larger sweetspot without having to make it an oversized trampoline.

If you're an advanced player suggest trying a 2013 PS 90 as it's the best version of the PS 90 frames imo & much easier on the arm. Federer won 17 of his 20 slams with a PS 90 so nuff said....
