I'm a woman, around 22 years old when this video was on MTV. I was in love with that small smile he had after he dropped the keys into the mail box. It was such a subtle thing that said so much.
I liked that the character found some self pride in his own actions, that he was going to keep on the path of being a real man, and not the poor boy toy for a bored rich woman.
And the song was just beautiful.

Oh...that train wolf howl/train whistle.... I love most of what Mr Springsteen has done in his long career. This song took a bit of a beating a few years later because people couldn't get past the fact that he'd used the word "Daddy". If you think about in one way, you can MAKE its creepy in your own head. But to me me it meant he knew she was married, by choice, to a "sugar daddy" - as in, a younger, beautiful woman who willingly becomes a trophy wife to an older, very rich man basically for the benefits. It was her deal. He knew that she was never going to leave the money life; but she was bored, she was playing with him to see she could get a reaction, and wanting the best of both worlds by going downtown and getting her car detailed again, and again, and again by the hot mechanic - then this time, handing over the keys. He was smart - which is why he thought about it... dreamed about it...then decided against it, smiled, dropped the keys off and walked home. It was never going to go well any other way and he knew it.. But OH... that lonesome sound at the end... a howl towards an unattainable, luminous and magnificent but (probably a little cold, and with a dark side) celestial body.

He's referring to her husband because she has a ring on when she hands him the keys, he says did your daddy leave you all alone, her husband ...
Bruce Springsteen envisioned "Fire" as a song which could be recorded by his idol Elvis Presley. It was written after Springsteen saw Presley perform at a May 28, 1977 concert at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Springsteen said, "I sent [Elvis] a demo of it but he died before it arrived."

This song IS on Born in the USA and he was a great admirer of Roy Orbison, organizing the video concert Black and White Nights. He is more than hard driving rock. He's got more depth and variety than a casual sampling might suggest. He evolved many times over the years as you can see through Nebraska, and The Rising and more. He is The GOAT.

Springsteen has a much more eclectic songbook than many people realize. For every Thunder Road you have a Tunnel of Love. For every Hungry Heart or Rosalita there's The River and My City of Ruins. When he isn't sounding like his expected self, he can sound llike Orbison, Pete Seeger, Van Morrison, even Eric Burdon. When you've got 4 hours to fill every night, you need range.

BORN IN THE USA was such a huge album. So many hit songs - "Born in the U.S.A", "I'm on Fire", "Cover Me", "Glory Days", "Dancing in the Dark", "My Hometown" all had success on radio and/or video. Bruce already had a huge following and this album just catapulted him into the stratosphere as an iconic artist with other 80's mega stars - MJ, Prince, Madonna etc of that era. But Bruce has always been Bruce...genuine and a good ole boy who sings about life. Mad respect for him as a singer/writer and artist.

Pegasus, this song and the other two you mentioned are from the same album! It was my first Springsteen album back in the early 80’s. My Dad’s a Springsteen fan since the 70’s. I’ve known every word to this song since before I knew what it meant, lol.
I remember in college in creative writing class, my tweedy, elbow-patches, gin rose-having professor cited the third verse of this song as a piece of genius wordsmithing. I’ve always thought that. Bruce is one of my favorite lyricists. I’m a novelist and I learned a lot from this dude’s lyrics.
“Sometimes it’s like someone took a knife baby, edgy and dull, and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull” is a fukkin BAR.

'Those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
    Or is it something worse'
If you are looking for more Springsteen rock, try Thunder Road
'You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain for a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero, that's understood

My dad was the same way. I had to learn to drive a 1977 Chevy Monza 5 speed stick shift although I was allowed to use the more expensive automatic for my actual driving test...lol. I later bought that Monza from my parents when I graduated high school and went off to university in the neighboring state. Of course, they expected me to come home for visits regularly since I had a car. This is the kind of music that played on the radio during that time. "Glory Days" is another great Springsteen song - also nostalgic but more upbeat.
