Interesting but I don’t think that’s accurate, mostly taking into account that Ian Haugland is Norwegian and has been living in Sweden since he was a baby. He has collaborated with Glenn Hughes (Black Sabbath/Depp Purple) but he hasn’t any known relationship with USA bands. He is still the drummer for Europe, the band was separated from 1992 to 2003.
Is funny / crazy how the 70's 80's and 90's has more music that is listened to and like / loved than current day music. We had the tunes that rocked all day long and never got tired of it.
You are so right! I still haven't got tired most of the 50's to 90's to songs that I've listened since the 70's and forward (I was born in 1969 so bit hard to have listened 50's and 60's songs since they came out like it have been so for me with many many many songs from all the way from 70's and after that 😉 )

Europe (Sweden Metal Band) sold millions of albums, Joey Tempest (singer) said in a live interview that he was still in school and borrowed a keyboard from a buddy, he was 16 years old when he came up with the keyboard riff, he didn't even think it was going become a massive hit till today. In this video he was in his 20's. Joey Tempest is still touring and said he's very happy living in the UK with his wife and kids. They have many great songs and he's a great singer. Thank you for reacting to another classic.
I'll never forget the very first time, I heard "The Final Countdown". I was playing football with some friends on a hot Friday afternoon in August 1986. Some person in the neighbourhood had their windows wide open, playing that song (I believe, it was number 1 in the Dutch Top 40 at the time). I was 10 years old and I thought: "Wow! What a great song!" Still a huge fan of Europe. It think, it's sad, that most people only know Europe for "The Final Countdown", "Rock The Night" and "Carrie". They have so many other great songs. "Dance The Night Away", "Ready Or Not", "Tomorrow", "The Beast", to name a few. "In My Time" is a must-listen; that solo! 😍
Year 2006. IT wasn't first Time when I heard this Song. We were The mall with My husband and we were stairs going to buy engagement rings. That moment I always remember
Mind blowing moment .....This song is nearly 40 years old !! Swedish rock band , this just went stratospheric when it was released , hit number 1 just about everywhere selling millions .. We all thought Swedish women were hot then Joey Tempest ( the lead singer) hit the stage and the women went crazy ... And quite a few men too lmao .. Top band , still rockin all these years later
Have to say that you are right about us women went crazy, well actually I was still just 17 when TFC came out 😁 ...and love the song still, Joey not so much these days 😉
I’m class of ‘87 and this was our graduation song. Everyone was blaring it in the parking lot before we went in to the graduation ceremonies. Memories.
Europe is a Swedish rock band formed in Upplands Väsby in 1979,[5] by lead vocalist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist Peter Olsson, and drummer Tony Reno. They obtained a major breakthrough in Sweden in 1982 by winning the televised competition "Rock-SM" (Swedish Rock Championships); it was the first time this competition was held, and Europe became a larger success than the competition itself. Europe rose to international fame in the 1980s with their third album, 1986's The Final Countdown. As of 2003, Europe has sold 10 million albums worldwide.[6] The band has had two top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (The Final Countdown and Out of This World)[7] and three top 30 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart ("The Final Countdown", "Rock the Night" and "Carrie", which reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100).[8] Europe went on hiatus in 1992, reunited temporarily for a one-off performance in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 1999 and announced an official reunion in 2003. Since then the band has released six albums, Start from the Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Last Look at Eden (2009), Bag of Bones (2012), War of Kings (2015) and Walk the Earth (2017).
Fun fact. The hit came out 1986 however I spent high-school with these guys, the singer Joey Tempest and John Norum who plays lead guitar (Joey Tempest real name is actually Joakim Larsson) are 2 years younger than me (born in 1963) and from a small Municipality outside of Stockholm, sweden, called Upplands Väsby. They was formally formed back in 1979 but practiced in our school auditorium in the evenings back in 1978. Let me tell you, back then, I did never consider them to make such a huge hit like Final Countdown. They broke up in 1992, reformed for one New Year concert in Stockholm 1999 and was formally reformed once again in 2003 and are still touring now, at the age of 60+. You can read more on their Wikipedia page which is rather good even though I didn't contribute ;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe_(band)
I had the biggest crush on Joey Tempest, shoot the entire band are exceptionally good looking. But look how he swings that microphone stand, what strength and swagger.
I had the pleasure of eating breakfast with the band in 2010. My father in-law at the time was one of the founders of Sweden Rock Festival. We had gotten tickets to see them and stay at the same hotel. It was so surreal sitting with such an iconic group.
My favourite song is Carrie. I remember the first time I saw them. There was a competition in rock music broadcasted on Swedish television. Europe was far better than anyone else despite their young age, and I immediatly fell in love with the singer ...
In 1986, Europe (the band) became the most successful band from Sweden since Abba w/ their 3rd album 'The Final Countdown' becoming a global hit and selling 3x platinum in the US alone. The band was formed by vocalist Joey Tempest (real name Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson) in the late 70' as Force... renamed Europe in the early 80's w/ John Leven (bass), John Norum (guitar) and Tony Reno (drums)... They released 2 successful albums in Sweden - 'Europe' (1983) and 'Wings of tomorrow' (1984)... before they were signed internationally. Joey Tempest wrote the songs for Europe and one of them was an anthemic keyboard piece... He showed it to the band's new member Mic Michaeli (keyboards) who played it on the album 'The Final Countdown'... Ian Haughland (drums) joined and the album was released in 1986... Soon, guitarist John Norum quit Europe, unhappy w/ the band's commercial direction... Kee Marcelo (guitar) did the tour and joined Europe as more hits came - 'Rock the night' ... 'Carrie' ... 'Cherokee'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 The problem was that Europe couldn't record a 'Final countdown Part 2'... They returned in 1988 w/ the album 'Out of this world'... and it sounded different... Europe were hoping for a massive tour of N. America in 1989 after the album sold platinum... but none of the singles - 'Superstitious' ... 'Open your heart' ... 'Let the good times rock'... had the same impact commercially. The US tour never happened after the European and Asian tours ... Europe tried again in 1991 w/ the album 'Prisoners in paradise'... but w/ Nirvana and the 90's grunge rock scene decimating the popularity of 80's rock bands, Europe were left in the lurch... The band split up in 1992. After reuniting for a 1999 New Years Eve show for the new millennium, Europe soon reunited the 'Final Countdown' line-up of Tempest/ Norum/ Leven/ Michaeli/ Haughland and released 'Start from the dark' in 2004... but Europe were unwilling to recreate their 80's sound. As a result, subsequent albums failed commercially, but Europe has continued to tour successfully on the popularity of their 80's records til today.
Was in the band and always played this during the last quarter of football games. All brass, all the bass, it never failed to get the crowd up and screaming.
I had this vinyl album and I knew every song by heart. This was my favorite and the song Carrie which was the rock ballad I guess. I lived in Germany because my father was in the military when I was in middle school from 1981 to 1984. So I knew of them before this song came out. They were so popular in Europe no pun intended. And of course I knew all of the British bands and I also knew of Falco which you should definitely check out his song Amadeus. You will trip out on that one. It is hilarious it's partially in English but mostly in German and it was a huge song in the States sorry the US. Also the song by Nena 99 Luftballoons was very popular of course in Germany because she was from Germany but weirdly enough the German version of the song was more popular in the States even though she did an English version of the song. That's another good one to check out too. It's about nuclear war actually. We used to have bomb threats a lot at our high school in Germany, West Germany at the time. We had more bomb threat drills than we had fire drills. And then when I was in elementary school we lived in North Central Texas at Shepherd Air Force Base and we head tornado drills more than we had fire drills. Being a military brat growing up was interesting I have to say. As you know. Another great reaction! It's hard to keep up with you sometimes. Lol! Congratulations on 300,000 subscribers! Just recently became a member. You're the only one that I decided to become a member for. Take care and God bless
Love 99 luft/red balloons. It's messed up when you really listen to the lyrics, but her voice and the music take your mind away from the story of the song.
Gen X -- 80s rock was the best music - seriously -- the 70s 80s and 90s ... best time to be a kid -- Haven't listened to some of these songs for years -- still know every word --
In 82 we got the leaflet through the door on building a shelter in our understairs cupboard. UK charts were full of nuke related stuff, from Dancing with Tears by Uktravox, to Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, or 99 Luft Balloon by Nena
A Swedish band, and this song came out when I was 15 years old, and drummed a lot. Back then, it was the best song ever! We where all very exited! Today this genre might be called "Poodle rock", just look at their hairstyles. :) Which does not take away anything from this iconic piece.
"Carrie" was their biggest hit. It was a power ballad and it was a huge song. But they had a few other hits in the U.S., more in Europe - "Rock the Night" "Superstitious" and "Cherokee" being a fewThe of their bigger hits.. The band is talented and Joey Tempest has a great voice. The band is out of Sweden and has been pretty popular in Europe. Also check out a band called SLAUGHTER - "Up All night", "Fly to the Angels", "Made About You".
Tip For A Buzz with This Song!!! As you're in a plane ready to take off...and the plane is taxi-ing...PRESS PLAY!!! Try and co-ordinate the FIRST drum-roll to when the pilot ACCELERATES for take-off!!! It's a GREAT, GREAT buzz!!! (Been doing this forever!)
Europe were active as a band until around 1992, where they took a "break" but never officially broke up. And you are actually not quite wrong about it being a New Year's Eve song. The organizers of the turn of the millennium celebration in Sweden (where Europe are from) offered the band a massive amount of money to perform TFC as the year changed from 1999 to 2000. It was a one of a kind moment as for the first time both guitarists that had been in the band (John Norum, founding member in this video, and Kee Marcello, his replacement until their break in 1992) were on stage at the same time. It was the only time the guitar solo was ever played as it is on the record with two guitars in harmony. After that, the original lineup seen in this video (Joey Tempest, vocals; John Norum, lead guitar; John Leven, bass; Mic Michaeli, keyboards and Ian Haugland, drums) had commitments to fill but having felt a spark at that reunion, decided to reform in late 2003, releasing their first album with that lineup for the first time since the TFC album in 1986. They have been together ever since, and while their music is more heavy and blues-rock oriented now and Joey, while still an amazing vocalist, cannot sing quite this high anymore (I mean, who can after more than 40 years!), they have released several more albums, perform and tour (as recently as last weekend!) and are working on a new album to be released in 2025. TFC was #1 in 1986 in 26 countries simultaneously... except the United States. Ironically, a few years back Geico approached the band about doing the song in a commercial, and they did, giving them their first USA #1 on the Rock charts as a result of people like yourself discovering the song. They end every show with it even today, as a gift of appreciation to their fans; here's a performance from Rock In Rio 2024: ruclips.net/video/Jy-PIqyvY_Q/видео.html and yes, this is the same lineup as in the TFC video, more than 40 years later. 🙂
I'm so glad you finally saw this I love Europe. I was in my teens so I was so in love with the hair and the voice. Joey tempest will always be perfect in my memories lol
Awesome to see you digging more into these songs rather than skip them because you are familiar with an iconic lyric, hook, tune, riff, etc. Very few are one hit wonders. They all have a story, some with deeper catalogs than others of course. Keep rockin'!🤘
Much like Rick Roll this has been a huge meme for such a long time. One of my favorites was a Geico commercial maybe a decade ago lol. Great song though.

I had a run in with these guys in 1991 /92??? I had a band playing in the San Francisco music scene at the time. My day job was installing and servicing telephone systems. My company had a client in Novoto CA, Mr Mike Varney. I was at his house one evening fixing his phone system and Mikes wife came running in and told me “Europe is here, come meet them!” I went in the living 0: around the baby grand playing and singing a “new song”. I was introduced to them as a local musician. Nice guys and very humble.
I remember listening to the FM radio on our local rock station going to sleep listening to this and waking up for school hearing it played again. I miss the '80's, just simpler fun times.
Nice! Europe is Epic! Such a great band, up there on the list of all time favorite Rock Bands. Another band that is not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Yes they have many big hits, and I agree this song is timeless. Their song Carrie is one of the best ballad's ever written.
Thanx for this. I live in the south of Sweden and they use to, back in the day, come to my little town and perform. I was 10 when i saw them in 85 (Wings of tomorrow tour) and then in 87 for this tour. awesome.
Yes, great and underrated song. I'd love for him to react to "Cherokee". My ancestors walked the Trail of Tears. Also, another song I'd love for him to react to is Paul and the Raiders "Indian Reservation"
Hey man! Great 80's song, Iconic song, this is what the 80's was all about (Metalwise) Long Hair, guitar solos, magnificent live performances, 80's foerever. Now if you'll allow me I'd like to suggest a couple of songs from this band, cause they were not by any means a one hit wonder, then I suggest you to listen to "In The Future to Come" which to me is one of their best, with a killer guitar solo as well or "Ready Or Not" is nother gem, barely played but only known by good fans of the band who would listen past "Final Countdown" Greetings to your channel Black Pegasus.
Great reaction. I really like Europe. They are the first band I ever saw live when I was 13 or 14 years old. This song was written for a friend of the band who needed a song for the opening of his disco. Personally I prefer a lot of their songs they released after reuniting with their original guitarist John Norum in the early 2000s. They are from Sweden.

In America, Europe is known for major hit "The Final Countdown" and a lesser hit "Carrie". In other parts of the world they are known for a huge catalogue.
@@ricomajestic The Final Countdown hit #8 on Billboard... Carrie hit #3 on Billboard... Superstitious hit #31 on Billboard and was the last time Europe charted in the US. The Final Countdown and Carrie are considered 80's classics and still heavily played on radio today.
@@xcellent-records I wouldn't call Carrie a classic. It is a very plain ballad and not even the best of the 80s. I don't know anyone that remembers the song. Final Countdown became iconic and a classic but not Carrie! Superstitious was still a hit and in my opinion a better song than Carrie!

I just saw them live this past Saturday. Same setting as the mid 80’s. Still rocking! Superstitious, Rock the Night, Carrie… they made a whole bunch of great songs.
I LOVED their music. They had Carrie that went platinum in the States, but my personal favorite was "Lights and Shadows" just because the lyrics were off the chain. Thanks for reviewing these guys. They were totally underrated.
This song was iconic back in the 80s, and still sounds just as good today. They have had many hits. A power ballad from them is Carrie. Almost saw the band in 2012 Download festival, UK, but they were snowed in in Sweden so couldn't make it! 😢
Hi from France, This song is iconic, I am being fan of EUROPE since this song was released on february 1986. For information, RedOne, moroccan producer and maker of many hits of LADY GAGA (he made the hits "Just Dance", "Poker face", "Bad Romance"...) is a huge fan of EUROPE and he wanted to be in the Music industry because of EUROPE.
Detroit Pistons in the 2004 championship season the arena would always play this coming out of commercial in a close game after that alot of other sports team jacked it
That bass drop still hits hard after all these years. There’s a reason this song has endured decades and transcends cultures. You don’t even have to understand the lyrics to get psyched when you hear it.
Sweden ❤loved it back then even danced with joey ❤😊sweden is one of the best producer of music in the world!!!!!!Europe is a band and Euorope is a continent with lot of countrys!!!!
The song that turned Europe into global superstars!! Singer Joey Tempest made a demo that he kinda forgot about then when he rediscovered it he realized it was something to actually build on. So that demo eventually became this song long story short! This song was like i said a smash hit all around the world in the mid '80s. The band was hit by the music curse never really made it again. Eventually they split up and they all went different ways and that could've been the end of the story. However as the turn of century was approaching rumours were saying they would reunite and play on new ears eve!. The members denied it at first since nothing was really certain however eventually they did comfirm a temporary gig on new years eve. A few years later they decided to reunite for real not just for one gig.
The group is from the land of my ancestors, Sweden. If you listen, you can hear the accent. Carrie was the other one I remember most as a hit. As one that wasn't a big hit, at least not that I am aware of, but that I really love, is Girl from Lebanon from their Prisoners in Paradise album. It was later in their career. It's about something and I really love the guitar in it. It's worth a listen. They don't all have to be the big hits.
You said it right, is timeless ! Pure energy and fire. No they don't only have this song, you should check out Carrie, Seven Doors Hotel, Dreamer, Open your hearth.... just a few, they were a majestic band !

when the first notes starts playing, you will automatically whistle the others!
In that respect, listen to "Rock The Night" with them, it's a lot like "We Will Rock You", just a tip! :)
He's just a few years younger than me, but he haven't heard this song in it's entire, and he's a musician????
Just played my hometime for the 4th year in a row last month ^^
Have to say that you are right about us women went crazy, well actually I was still just 17 when TFC came out 😁 ...and love the song still, Joey not so much these days 😉
"Superstitious" has one of the greatest guitar solos. God! Joey Tempest and that amazing hair...
Most every band back then had that hair.
@JohnWarner-lu8rq True, but Joey Tempest's was more beautiful, in my opinion. Soooo silky...

@@JaquelineGoodspeed Right! For a moment, I forgot about him.
I’m class of ‘87 and this was our graduation song. Everyone was blaring it in the parking lot before we went in to the graduation ceremonies. Memories.
Your look on John Norman guitar solo is so priceless. Hits Carrie, Listento your heart, rock the night, superstition,
Norum, IMO one of the best guitar players ever to walk the earth!
@@MrMk82 hey he is good but he is no George Lynch, Eddie VH, Randy, Yngwie, or Steve Via
I dont like the ones you mentioned except Yngve.
As of 2003, Europe has sold 10 million albums worldwide.[6] The band has had two top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (The Final Countdown and Out of This World)[7] and three top 30 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart ("The Final Countdown", "Rock the Night" and "Carrie", which reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100).[8]
Europe went on hiatus in 1992, reunited temporarily for a one-off performance in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 1999 and announced an official reunion in 2003. Since then the band has released six albums, Start from the Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Last Look at Eden (2009), Bag of Bones (2012), War of Kings (2015) and Walk the Earth (2017).
And they won the competition with the song "Seven Doors Hotell" . In composition not so far from The Final Countdown.
But look how he swings that microphone stand, what strength and swagger.
amen
Also known for power ballad ***CARRIE***
Yaaaaaaas!
I had the pleasure of eating breakfast with the band in 2010. My father in-law at the time was one of the founders of Sweden Rock Festival. We had gotten tickets to see them and stay at the same hotel. It was so surreal sitting with such an iconic group.
this is probally one of my favorite Hair bands from the 80's their story telling in EVERY song is amazing, and this album is PURE FIRE!
All I can say, is it must be fantastic to have a song that is one of the most famous for all of time. It will continue on and on.
My favourite song is Carrie. I remember the first time I saw them. There was a competition in rock music broadcasted on Swedish television. Europe was far better than anyone else despite their young age, and I immediatly fell in love with the singer ...
Ah, Carrie. The ultimate 80’s slow dance in school discos.
i've lost my virginity while listening to "Carrie". I don't remember the girl, by i remember every note and word of that song! :)
The problem was that Europe couldn't record a 'Final countdown Part 2'...
Carrie was another one of their big songs
Carrie sucks though. Both John Norum and Joey Tempest hates that song
"Superstisious" is better
am I the only one who loves seven doors hotel?
Gen X -- 80s rock was the best music - seriously -- the 70s 80s and 90s ... best time to be a kid -- Haven't listened to some of these songs for years -- still know every word --
Beautiful reaction my man.
Great band, Rock the Night and superstitious are awesome as many others have said. My 2favs
Europe is one of my favourite bands ever. I’ve been a fan since mid 90s, and saw them live in 2009 or 2010. They’ve got so many good songs!
In 86' we were all ready to get nuked! We didn't even bother with the "get under the desk" drills! 😂
In 82 we got the leaflet through the door on building a shelter in our understairs cupboard. UK charts were full of nuke related stuff, from Dancing with Tears by Uktravox, to Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, or 99 Luft Balloon by Nena
I'm 60 years old and I remember doing those drills in middle school in the 70's
Funny that these days we have come this long way back to nuclear threat, and we don't even bother with bomb shelters. Only the richest creeps do. ;)
By then, we understood how useless it would be to get under our desks. lol. Why bother drilling that?
For a traditional bomb, sure, but not nukes.
A Swedish band, and this song came out when I was 15 years old, and drummed a lot. Back then, it was the best song ever! We where all very exited! Today this genre might be called "Poodle rock", just look at their hairstyles. :) Which does not take away anything from this iconic piece.
This is by far their biggest hit! ....However they have loads of hits like "Cheokee",
Rock The Night", "Open Your Hear" , "Superstitious"
THESE guy's were Great 💯👍
Love this song.... 🎶🎵🎸☕

This is played at every sporting event is where u heard it
Saw them live last year. Still the original line-up... And still sounding fabulous 🤘❤️
Love the fact that this songs meaning is not under debate! It's about moving to other planets!
Thanx for this. I live in the south of Sweden and they use to, back in the day, come to my little town and perform. I was 10 when i saw them in 85 (Wings of tomorrow tour) and then in 87 for this tour. awesome.

They were Europe when you lived in Germany, this song played everywhere to death
If you lived in the States it was the same way!
Great reaction. I really like Europe. They are the first band I ever saw live when I was 13 or 14 years old.
This song was written for a friend of the band who needed a song for the opening of his disco.

Why could it not have been a song about nuclear destruction? i.e. "The Final Countdown" . Keep in mind the time period of this song. 😎
Great band! I, as a Swede, am very proud of them (and the Swedish music industry, a lot of good stuff there)!
In America, Europe is known for major hit "The Final Countdown" and a lesser hit "Carrie". In other parts of the world they are known for a huge catalogue.
Superstitious was also a hit in the US!

Every single 80s rock band also had a ballad song. EVERY SINGLE ONE!! Carrie was Europe’s ballad and maybe their 2nd more recognizable song
It's in rocky

Amazing timeless song, plays at so many sport events, many good music from Sweden 🇸🇪 Europe, abba, Roxette, Avicii, ghost and more, other very good songs offspring with pretty fly for a white guy,, nickelbag with rockstar, Frank zappa with Bobby Brown
I just saw them live this past Saturday. Same setting as the mid 80’s. Still rocking! Superstitious, Rock the Night, Carrie… they made a whole bunch of great songs.
I saw them years ago as the opening band for Def Leopard. One of the best concerts ever.
They are from Sweden. Joey Tempest is the lead singer and still performing and looks totally different now
I LOVED their music.
nostalgia deluxe! i went to one of there first concerts in the hometown we were just nuts !!
In Sweden these hair-style bands were called 'Pudelrock' - Poodle Rock!
I went to their concert in Stockholm (Sweden) last month! Still going strong! 🤘🎸

Hi from France,
This song is iconic, I am being fan of EUROPE since this song was released on february 1986.
This came out while I was stationed in Germany. It really hit home when it came out why we were there.
Met them at Red Rocks in Morrison, CO. Cool guys and Joey Tempest has an awesome voice!
Absolutely love this group and the song
Brings back many memories for me.
