I retired after 21 years in the Army. Completed multiple tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Watching this documentary brings back a lot of emotions. But the overwhelming pride and honor that I feel or felt watching about what those Marines did in that village for those people, was absolutely the most amazing thing that I have witnessed, on the ground or on TV. I don't know what has become of that village now. But I can say that while those Marines were there, those people were safe and happy once again. To all those Marines that took place at Camp Jaker, I salute you. And it takes a lot for a lifelong Ranger to salute you. Yes, we saw lots of combat and bad things happened. We saw billions of taxpayer dollars wasted. But we also saw some of the most amazing things. Like when we were sent to a small FOB in northern Afghanistan. We helped open a Madras and watched as little girls actually were able to get an education. And as long as we were there, they would always be able to get an education. What a feeling of joy and accomplishment. We tried to help as much as possible. Sometimes we could. Sometimes we couldn't. Classic counterinsurgency techniques were never going to work in Afghanistan for a variety of reasons. The smartest move was to have gotten Bin Laden at Tora Bora, then make a deal with all the interested parties, and get the hell out. But Franks blew that opportunity. So we stayed, not fully understanding the hot mess we were stepping into. And then all the predictable outcomes followed.

This was totally the fault of our leaders--Republicans and Democrats. We can have a worthwhile debate about whether we should have stayed in Afghanistan after 2002. But Bush made that call. After which the question subsequent presidents should have asked the American people...DO YOU WANT TO LOSE ANOTHER WAR?

    • @gusgone4527
      @gusgone4527 Год назад

The fault lies with those who went into that country, with the aim to make it a democracy. The only mission objective should have been, to eradicate the Taliban and ALL those who supported them. In addition to burning every poppy field that supplied the illegal drugs trade and salting the earth. Soldiers and marines are not peace makers, peacekeepers, social workers or wet nurse nannies. Their job is to locate, close with and kill the enemy with extreme prejudice. Once that had been completed and around 75% of the Afghan population killed in the process. (The Taliban and those who supported them directly or indirectly by complying.) Disaster relief organisations should have taken over the effort. Aiding those few remaining to become civilised human beings.
The military standing by to finish the other 25% if necessary.
It was in essence a failure to learn from history. The British Empire fought 3 wars in that hell hole and could not fully control it. The Russians and then the USSR tried too. What fool thought they could repeat the same historical mistakes and hope for a different outcome?
      The Bush/Blair beast, thats who/what.
BTW, former British Sgt here, retired due to injury and now a War Pensioner. I wish you well brother in arms.
It was on 19th of April that we marched to Ahmed Khel
And there we met the enemy and quickly made them feel
That we were British soldiers bent on vengeance for the dead
And fought for dear old England for which Sir Louis bled.
The sun was shining brightly, ’twas a warm and sunny day,
But on the Afghan hill tops, the wintry snow still lay.
The lark was singing sweetly, and carolling in the sky
When we went forth to meet the foe, resolved to do or die.
We had marched but six miles on our way when first we met the foe
Assembled in their thousands on the hills and vales below.
We opened fire upon them, but they stood defiant and still,
Until six thousand of their tribes came rushing down the hill.
Along our line the wild mass charged, and fought in wild despair.
Their banners glistened in the sun, their wild cries rent the air.
They charged the gallant 59th, but that brave devoted band
Poured on them such a hell of fire, nought living could withstand.
Ahmed Khel was fought and won, for the enemy now had fled.
As we rode o’er the battlefield, two thousand there lay dead,
Cold and stiff in the arms of death, and others in fearful pain.
Such scenes of bloodshed may God grant we ne’er shall see again.
Our men fought well, let history tell, how our shot and shell did fly
And how the 59th stood firm, resolved to do or die.
Then praise be to those soldier lads whose hearts were firm as steel
When they fought for Queen and Country, on the plains of Ahmed Khel.

Vietnam vet here. This documentary shows that NONE of the hard truths gained at such bloody cost in Vietnam have been learned by the U.S. or its troops. The Marine officer talking about "we came so that we can get that back" i.e. peaceful times, reflects a basic misunderstanding that the insurgency was fundamentally fueled by HIS PRESENCE (and the Russians before him - another lesson forgotten).
This officer - and his troops - had no real connection with the Afghanis, their culture, hell they can't even speak their language. The ultimate irony is that the Taliban - formerly the Mujahadeen led by Osama Bin Laden - were funded and armed by the U.S. starting with President Carter in order to entrap the Russians into their own "Vietnam."
And so a woefully under-equipped but fierce insurgency rooted in the population drove the most powerful military in the world out of their country. Much respect to them, and much sadness over the utter waste of ALL the lives lost in the process.

Troops from 🇨🇦🇬🇧🇺🇸🇦🇺🇳🇿🇨🇵🇩🇪🇸🇯🇩🇰 sacrificed so much & then were betrayed when they went home.

I've just been able to watch this video today, cried for the entirety of the presentation.
Having to "pen" this still in tears mindful of the great sacrifices of each and every one you.
I've spent some time in this very location and can speak with some authority.
I'm really sorry that we didn't turn the tide as soon as everyone would have liked. However, I as with many others believe that we have given the good people of Afghanistan enough breathing room to survive with some degree of hope. To those who say we lost the war I say we might have lost a battle but never did we lose the war.
    God is Great!

Blew my hip out jumping a wall with my kit on and I had arthritis and it was pretty bad just I didn’t know cause I was so active I crushed that ball in the joint and had two replacements on that side and it’s messed up again VA sucks . When went home after the my hospital stay n recovery I went to stay with my mom in Arizona and my first night I have one of those nightmares like seeing the faces of people I ran into during a compound clearing operation and I wake up look out the window it looked like the mountains of afghanistan n freaked me out looked around I was in a white colored room safe n sound it took a good year for those dreams to dwindle down

Nothing but respect to these Marines and all who served. In the end all of the efforts and sacrifices were abandoned by the politicians who sent them there. A lesson for those who would trust the people who send Americans to fight and die. When will we learn? Fight to win, destroy the enemy and the pull out. Nation building never works (especially in the Middle East) and usually props up corruption and incompetence.

I think I understand your sentiment. The thing is, there was never going to be a "victory", or "win" over the Taliban. No NATO country, especially the UK & US forces, had the political backing. Our politicians, of all parties, had no idea what the end game looked like. We didn't understand that the vast majority of the Afghan population, especially outside of Kabul, have any idea, what democracy means, or looks like. They certainly have no allegiance to the govt in Kabul. Mostly, they didn't even like the Taliban, they just didn't like us more! They didn't want, or understand what the West was bringing them. They never asked for it and didn't need it. Sadly that view is supported by history. You can go right back to Alexander the Great and the Afghan people, made up of hundreds of different tribes, clans and families, have ignored or fought invaders and each other with equal ferocity. Did our troop die in vain? I don't know. But I do know no politician had, or has the answer. There is a brilliant book by a British MP who walked across the country, just after 2001, mostly alone, following the route of Alexander the Great. He stayed with local people and local leaders, tribal elders, warlords and ordinary families. It gives a fascinating insight into what they NATO forces, and politicians faced. they should have read it!

I served in the US Army Infantry 1983-1995. It was an honor. Maybe someday America will learn that US politicians do not have our best interests in mind nor are they competent enough to win the wars we send our citizens to fight and die in.
