- Bards of War: Fighting is everything documents Operation Mountain Thrust in July 2006 of the Afghanistan Global War on Terror (GWOT). The film was part of Scott Kesterson's 15-month embed with the Embedded Tactical Trainers deployed to train and equip the Afghan National Army. Kesterson filmed, directed, edited and produced Bards of War: Fighting is Everything himself. Kesterson was the first citizen journalist to embed in the Department of Defense embed program. During his 15-month embed Kesterson published over 120 blog articles, 35 video stories and over 20 audio interviews. He was awarded an Emmy for best photography after his return in 2007. The mission Kesterson set out to do was tell the soldier's story. This film is part of that vision.

I did 5 deployments, 3 to Iraq and 2 to Afghanistan, was there in 2010 in the Helmand Province running operations in the Garmisr District Koshtay and Safar regions was with 3/1 India CO
We fought in Garmser about a week after these TICs. Spent a week or so mucking them out of that town. ( chuck )

Also I’m now 56 and am still proud of my service but age gives wisdom and I know that you have to be brainwashed/ trained to take a life and you can live with that but even justified it’s your waking thoughts just the fact you will kill for someone else’s who’s gained from the death. I did 2 tours of Afghanistan, both in Helmand province, my first stint I was also partnered with the Afghan Security Forces in Nad E Ali and my second stint I was in an elite unit that did Brigade level strikes and Reconnaissance partnered with the Afghan Special Forces.. I saw Americans of course but I also saw Canadians, Australians, and more, I couldn't help but think how strange it was to have so many commonwealth troops in one place! So many royal subjects from across the globe fighting together again.. It reminded me of Crete during the 2nd World War.. History just repeats and ties us together.

Listen I love the forces that represented the true Canadian warriors in Afghanistan. I served in ACO 1-17 INF 5TH Stryker Brigade Combat Team (Counter Guerilla). The area that these guys are dealing with is the very same that my unit would inherit when we came to the fight. We took our first posting when we took our base in FOB FRONTENAC. Listen, any Canadian knows there really is not a more Canadian name for something than that. The FOB was a Canadian base forever but I want to say this. We inherited that vase and the area from a French Canadian unit. They were absolutely shameful and honestly blurred the line between coward and traitors. They simply were manning a vacation spot and had an agreement with the Taliban that they would not leave the write and they did not make waves for them and in return they would depend on their word to not attack them. So not only that they were arrogant and entitled they simply seemed to love to show their superiority and control over the FOB didn't take part in any operation to do the hand off or teach us about this area and also they demanded we not be near them. They banned us from even eating in their plywood hut of a chow hall and left the FOB when they left their intelligence in French and simply ran off. They are not these warriors. I have battled in Argandab, Sha Wali Kot, and every area you would all know. Wounded twice in two IED strikes. My brigade lost 38 of our men. So not all who served are warriors but I love you all who did the work of the warrior and made it an easier route for us when you arrived. Much love.

That unit would of been the Royal 22nd Regiment Van Doos. They're Canada's French regiment from Quebec. They're Canada's largest infantry regiment with 5 battalions. They have a well deserved reputation from their time in Korea and WW2. It's a shame that you got the assholes of the bunch.

All that we know now, this film gives me such mixed emotions. Anger that so many fought and died on both "sides" for the war machine. But so touched and proud by the courage of our neighbors to the north on the willingness to sacrifice for a just cause.

My Old Man was a firefigter there in Madison Township, we lived an hour south, but up there by Canal and all that is where he was. That's some wild stuff
Young adult I enlisted in the U. S. MARINES CORPS during peace time.
A little over 3 years of training for war, I was given a place to stand next to my Sensei, to help him fight our countries enemies.
I volunteered for all future combat missions!
Peace time operations for combat were small with no large friendly forces to call for reinforcements.
Alone in enemy territory I was given the order to advance to the attack. The MARINES CORPS taught me to fight alone than ordered me to do so. Ingress and egress of my enemy HQ gave us the intelligence to combat them on their home turf and win , I have a Soul straightening need to Honor my fallen Teammates who advanced to the attack and provided the diversion needed for me to accomplish my mission.
Remember everyone who is deployed!!!

Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending upon your point of view, I never went to Afghanistan or Iraq, unlike my son who did two tours in Afghanistan, and I therefore don’t have any firsthand experience of the war, however I have watched a lot of documentary films about it and I still can’t get a good sense of how the Taliban operated, their tactics,strengths or weaknesses and the seemingly impossible battle that allied forces faced trying to find,fight and defeat them.
I don’t really want to draw any comparisons but the best I can come up with is the Vietnam War VC, fighting an irregular war using tactics that stymied most of the allied forces sent there, and watching this documentary is reinforcing that comparison, and the fact that the war ended in a similar vein, the rapid and confused withdrawal and the rapid takeover by the Taliban, what was it all for, to many deaths and not enough self determination from the Afghanistan military/security forces, the whole thing was a disaster, both militarily and politically, militarily because the objective was never achieved and it cost lives, politically because it was a war that should not have happened, but as per usual our political masters thought that, this time, the war was going to quick and easy, but as usual the politicians got it so wrong, why do they believe that just because an enemy don’t operate like western military forces and don’t use, or even have, sophisticated weaponry that they are not a threat, what they lack, and don’t care about lacking, makes no difference, they were fighting for their own cause and they had a huge belief in that cause, whereas we, the allied forces, didn’t, we were fighting a war that we didn’t understand, were not ready for and didn’t really believe in, but we went anyway and did what we were told to do, but as with most wars the boots ended up doing whatever it took to stay alive and keep our friends/comrades alive, the end result was of little consequence, and the last time we fought a war that did have meaning and purpose was WWII, maybe Korea and the Falkland Islands, and, to my mind, the boots on the ground need to be 100% behind the cause they were being asked to fight for.
My apologies for going on, I do tend to speak my mind and end up writing ✍️ an essay about topics that I have an interest and opinion about, so, I have put my soapbox away (for now, might need it again), vented my spleen and written a short article, once again my apologies.
Sorry, I said it might have to come out again, but @ 12:35 the (presumably) Afghan Army guy firing his AK one handed would not lend itself to accuracy, or would it, he isn’t using the sights and the only thing stopping him from loosing control of the weapon is the wall. As I said before I don’t have any first hand experience of the war or the Afghan army so perhaps he is doing what he was supposed to do, possibly he has a physical limitation that stops him using both hands, or he is just apathetic about it and is just “spraying and praying”, praying he does actually hit the enemy or potentially hoping he does NOT hit the enemy. Perhaps someone who has first hand experience of the war (can’t ask my son, he doesn’t talk about it) and especially the Afghan Army could enlighten me, I also noticed, not just from this documentary, that none of the Afghan soldiers wear helmets 🪖, is that because they didn’t have them or for some reason particular to them.
With all respect to the guys @ 18:02 saying that the Afghanistan war was linked to 9/11 is, in my opinion, just “towing the line”, 9/11 was an absolutely evil 👿 and heinous act that affected so many different nations and religions, but, it was a terrorist act that should not be linked to any particular nation, and the war in Afghanistan didn’t do anything to avenge that crime, the majority of the Afghan people, in my opinion, didn’t take part in or support that crime against the many nations that were affected by it, they were innocent of any wrongdoing, the real culprits just disappeared into places like Afghanistan, Pakistan etc and they took years and years to capture or eliminate, and the collusion they had with the countries like Pakistan was one of the biggest issues that could not be addressed by just invading Afghanistan, the culprits of 9/11 were never going to participate in a war that exposed them to a genuine conventional war, they proved that they were cowards by the attack on 9/11 and would have just gone to ground in a safe place that they knew that the coalition forces could not openly operate in, all those years of war in Afghanistan didn’t achieve the extinction of those cowardly terrorist individuals or groups, but did achieve spending trillions of dollars etc and more importantly and sadly the lives of military personnel and innocent civilians, personally speaking it was all a WASTE OF LIVES and achieved NOTHING of worth.
After 9/11 I was a supporter of the war because it did affect the lives of so many and the way of life that we hold dear, but in hindsight it was a waste, I believe that we would have been better off not invading en-masse but by finding the location of the terrorists and taking them out using special forces or aerial weapons, not limiting the strikes to Afghanistan but any country giving aid or sanctuary to the terrorists, but as they say “hindsight is a wonderful thing”, and at the time I was all for the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
It was about the control of opium. Once fentanyl came on the scene it was no longer needed so they ended the operation.

Not sure if the Patricias were part of that test run in Dieppe. I know for sure my dad's regiment did. A French-Canadian regiment based in Montreal, "les Fusiliers Mont-Royal". That was a tragic and useless waste of human life. That operation lacked the man power and support to ever get off the beach. High Command was aware of that. They just wanted to test the reaction of the Germans...

I must say watching this is the first time i have been proud to say i am Canadian since Nov 4th 2015......is case you dont know the significance of that date, it's the day Trudeau became Crime Minister of our country, since then Canada has been on a downward spiral.....the only things that have been on the up and up is housing, rent, food prices, gas and basically everything that you need to survive all while increases have basically been flat.....but have no fear our Crime Minister and his oh so worthy finance minister named Freeland have us covered clearly i mean why else would they wanna invest billions of dollars in companies that dont exist?? Government gets to decide which part of the society is expendable therefore a soldier can only commit to the oat of defending his or her country the soldiers of the Taliban are no different than those of the coalition force

The war wasn't for "capitalism", our country was asked by the Afghanistan government to come install infrastructure, like roads and phone lines, which we did. It was a completely different war for our soldiers, we were there to help, and the Americans were not. Just happens that us being there required some military presence
