It actually means "Ten Thousand Years of Happiness" although technically it translates as "Ten Thousand Years" and is derived from the same phrase that was saluted to the Emperor of China starting in about the Tang Dynasty around the year 619. The idea of 陛下 can be translated as Imperial Majesty as opposed to other styles for Princes and Kings. Actually I was on Hickam AFB when the movie Pearl Harbor was being filmed at Ford Island. One day I look up and see these vintage planes flying overhead. I thought to my self "neat." Then I recognized the markings and saw they were Japanese. Having seen the bullet damage that still remains on base my blood ran cold.
