- Japanese Emperor Naruhito proclaimed his enthronement on Tuesday at Tokyo's imperial palace in a centuries-old ceremony attended by some 2,000 people, including world leaders and other dignitaries from more than 170 countries.
Naruhito, 59, and Empress Masako, a 55-year-old Harvard-educated former diplomat, took over in May in a brief, tradition-filled ceremony but Tuesday's "Sokui no Rei" is a more elaborate ritual in which he officially announces his change in status to the world.

If Prince Charles will ascend to the throne, I'm afraid that it will be like in Code Geass.

But just before the ceremony began, the rain stopped, the blue sky was visible, and a rainbow appeared in the Imperial Palace.

@Binaj Basnet even every person has their sins and God coold forgive us. So, what's make u fool to said like that?? Did U feel U had no sins before like a Saint?
Very well said..thanks!
Agus Saputro even Christianism had fed believers lots of lies throughout history which caused more and more people don’t believe in an absolute creator anymore, what you call “sins” is a part of life as we are designed by nature to do so. Without instincts of selfishness, greed and hunger for power, emotions like fear and hatred, we would all be long extinct. It’s always survival of the fittest-the most adaptable one to its environment will survive and continue its bloodline. Almost all our “sins” are because of it, to ensure the balance of everything, positive or negative, good or bad etc., no rivalry between two main factors, no development at all and devolution will finally erase the species which became incompetent-it’s natural selection. This is not justification of crimes, this is for the point of how the world runs.
Binaj Basnet = we are in 2019. The former emperor did not govern in 1945.

So for those not in the know, at 40:02 you can see the manservant guy carrying one of the three sacred treasures of Japan in that purple box. The three sacred treasures are a sword, a mirror and a jade jewel. They're supposedly over 5,000 years old and were gifted to the imperial line by the goddess Amaterasu, the goddess who created the Japanese islands. The first box looks like it's carrying a sword, and the jewel or mirror are being carried by the manservant guy behind the Emperor. No one but the Emperor and one or two other Shinto priests are allowed to see these treasures.
Izanagi and Izanami were given the task of creating the Japanese islands.
Amaterasu is the sun goddess who was the daughter of Izanagi and Izanami.
Amaterasu is the goddess who the Japanese nobility are descended from.
There was only a sword Kusanagi-no-tsurugi and second was Jewel Yasakani-no-magatama. Mirror Yata-no-kagami is keept always in Naikū. Emperor after intronization visit Naikū to see mirror.
Its highly possible that only Jewel is original. Sword is a replica cause the real one was gone in XII century. The mirror probably burnt is fire in 1040. What is left from it is kept in Naikū.
Wait, the Regalia actually exist?!
I thought they were a legend.
@@danielwalker26 Actually, Ameterasu was born from Izanagi's left eye when he bathed himself in order to remove the filth from Yomi(the Japanese underworld).
So she has no mother.
Actually, the emperor is also technically prohibited from laying eyes upon it.

although some may not agree with the existence of the monarchy in the modern world but this is something that should be preserved and protected.
Pik Hung Sow I agree
@今村エリザベス You mean our beloved Kaiser Wilhelm II, the idiotic tit who destroyed most of Germany's intereuropean alliances and was a massive contributor to the first world war which caused Germany massive amounts of death, loss of money, territory and was the ground for the spread of nazism? Yeah, totally sad we lost the von Hohenzollerns... And it's really unrespectful and demeaning to say that any of these countries greatest cultural feat was having some guy being the boss.
I agree. Love and respect from Thailand.
Monarchies represent the people and it’s traditions. These modern monarchies are mainly representatives of the culture and people of their nations with little actual power with the exception of a few. Like for my ethnicity we have the King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia who is elected by a monarchy board upon the death of the monarch. A lot of us didn’t respect the former King Nordom Sihanouk for his role in the creation and uprise of the Khmer Rouge and of his power grab but for some of us the Royals represent our culture and the royals should convey as representatives of our people to the country and to the world.
Pik Hung Sow the Japanese monarchy should have been abolished after the terrible crimes they committed against poor Koreans, Chinese and many other nationalities. Like the German monarch, they should have been exiled for these terrible crimes.
With the coronation of King Charles III coming up I decided to take an interest in these kinds of ceremonies. I'm surprised to find that the 1000 year old coronation tradition in the UK is eclipsed by this 2600 year old tradition!!! And the costumes are cool as hell! Well done to Japan for keeping such a cool tradition.
The Prime Minister governs Japan and is the chief executive vested with the most power by the National Diet. However, the Emperor represents the spirit of Japan itself and the people. This role is sacred and commands respect even if it is purely ceremonial. Through the Emperor, the Prime Minister was celebrating his loyalty and pride towards his nation and its people. In some ways the Emperor's lack of authority makes him even more loved. Since he doesn't actually rule he is not open to the criticisms that come with political power or the downsides of being a public servant. He doesn't need to do anything other than be there for his people as a living national treasure. The Prime Minister is ultimately just a person, but the Emperor is a symbol.

I like the contrast of clothing. On one hand, high officials wears tuxedo and western formal clothing, on the other hand, high officials wears sokutai and traditional attire. Japanese custom never fails me to amaze
That would probably because the modern governing system only came about 200 years ago but the ceremony has been going on long before that.
It's like watching Japanology but without Mr. Barakan & Alt.
During the Meiji era they really tried to westernized their culture by adapting clothing, mannerisms, food etc etc they retained those western garment because 200 years ago only nobels are allowed to wear western garment so they can be easily distinguished from the common folk.
The traditional Japanese court attire for women cost tends of thousands of dollars.
