I've been re-reading the Comedy since I haven't read it since high school. Knowles is at his best when he gets theological, and what a treat this is! Thank you for doing this presentation!
Dang that was high level. Michael never disappoints, and his philosophical and theological understanding of a work as beautiful yet complex as the Inferno really showcases his brilliance.
To my fellow protestants/non-roman catholics out there, remember that the greatest thinkers since Christ have been Catholic. Give them their due credit for spreading not just Truth in the Gospel, but also Truth in wit and literature.
I was asking other podcasters about which afterlife experiences are not the most impactful on other ppl and then asked how Dante displays this through the Divine Comedy. I love that this is now here to listen to.
Jacob, I hope you and your family are ok. I’m Italian and on my channel, I explain every canto of the Divine Comedy in 100 videos, in case you’re interested.
This is going to be so great! I did my thesis on the various levels of Hell for "The Divine Comedy" in college. My professor even asked if he could use part of my thesis on his doctoral paper (with attribution, of course). My favorite piece of literature ever!
Excellent lecture! Was literally just researching this story a week ago. The first part is definitely the most interesting with all the different characters in hell but the second and third party are just beautiful, especially the ending in the garden.
This is amazing -- just 20 min in and I've read Divine Comedy my fair share but there's still points being addressed that made me realize how much more there is to it. Really great lecture.
Love this for you Michael! This is truly where you shine! I’m waiting on the copy of divine comedy from the library to read … all because of you Michael! While it’s annoying waiting for it I’m delighted other people are ready it!
Just finished reading these for the first time and loved them all. As a protestant evangelical it was extremely interesting and I definitely want to read it again someday.
“Kamala Harris so bad, Trump so good I gave him money, Desantis super good, libs bad too, judeochristian worldview, Israel do no wrong” I love Ben but that’s his channel the last few months
🙋❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Dante's Inferno is one of my favorite (audio)books ❤❤❤❤❤ I really appreciate this talk Michael Knowles ❤❤❤❤❤This one I will save in fav's and listen again and again. 🙏Bless your heart 🙏🙋
Yes! I’m super down for this. Michael Knowles seems to have a pretty good grasp on the western canon, he should absolutely do more of these. Please, do more of this kind of stuff!
I’ve been reading the Divine Comedy on and off over the last handful of years, and I’m finally about halfway through Paradise. A lot of people say Paradise is the most boring part, but it’s the opposite, it is by far the most interesting and insightful part. I would also say make sure you get a good translation for the best chance at understanding it. I’d recommend the Esolen translation first (best notes and accuracy, still quite readable too), Mandelbaum next (more readable, but less accuracy in notes), and although I haven’t read it I’d avoid Ciardi like the plague.
@@stickmastergib3665 My understanding is that his translation’s issues are twofold: 1) He sticks to the terza rima rhyming style Dante used, which is impossible to replicate perfectly while keeping the original meaning intact. 2)He just kinda changes or removes entire portions of the story, this is partly (if not wholly) due to the first issue, but I understand it twists the meaning of the story a little too far. Read up on it for yourself but regardless it distorts the original. Plus you don’t get great footnotes to help explain the context which is much needed for Dante since he constantly references obscure historical events and people you would have no way to find out about without a Dante scholar explaining them. Don’t go for Ciardi just because it’s considered easy to read and cheap.
Brilliant. Just as you were saying, "Check out Yale," I was thinking the same. Thank you. Your lecture was very enjoyable, and I learned a lot. Just saying.
If anyone is interested, Hillsdale College offers a free online course (10 videos) on The Divine Comedy. I took it 2 years ago, it made me appreciate Purgatorio and Paradiso more than Inferno.
Surprised he didn’t mention the link between the she wolf and then him encountering Virgil next…..romus and Remus were said to have been raised by a she wolf - so the thing he most feared was the rise of empire - or the tyranny of empire
If I get to heaven I hope to one day sit down with Dante Alighieri and Micheal Knowles, (among others) and hopefully, have the mental acuity to fully understand what they are talking about! In the mean time I resolve to sit at their feet and pick up whatever crumbs I can get.
I agree with Michael Knowles' friend in terms that Dante had overburdened his Comedy with *an extremely particular* references to people nobody really knew even then. It's a writer's right. But sours the whole experience somewhat. To his defence you can say that he never knew how popular his work will become ages later, when even his beloved Florence is barely a blimp on the worldmap. Although it is a still a beautiful city.
My loved one read that book abd before I could ask to read it was given away. I don't think my public library has it but I will check on that maybe next year.
I wrote Dante Inferno, out of my gov classified library, in the center of the Canadian forest in winter. After inventing all day, I'd write Dante at night to rest my mind before sleep. Peace
Michael can you talk about the book Paradise Lost?? I watch Wendigoon and I love his episodes on this subject and I watched paradise lost at least 6 times. I love the story of it but I would love to hear the educational side of it.

I don't read, I listen and Dante is a tough listen.

“God tells His story with us…” I LOVE THAT!!!! So true 💜
I live in Asheville and we haven’t had power because of the hurricane. To pass the time I have been reading inferno. this came at the perfect time
Don't you just love it when that happens
I was asking other podcasters about which afterlife experiences are not the most impactful on other ppl and then asked how Dante displays this through the Divine Comedy. I love that this is now here to listen to.
I hope you and your family are all safe after going through this tragic disaster. Many prayers to you all.
Jacob, I hope you and your family are ok. I’m Italian and on my channel, I explain every canto of the Divine Comedy in 100 videos, in case you’re interested.
Wow, reading Dante's Inferno while going through your own kinda of trial and tribulation. Stay safe.
I loved Divine Comedy. I read it two years ago, and I took Hillsides online course, on The Divine Comedy, and that was illuminating.
that's what I'm going to do when I finally read it!
I love dante's divine comedy. And now explained by Michael Knowles? I'm all in for this...
The Divine Comedy is incredible
The Divine Comedy is the greatest work of art ever created. Michael’s lecture was excellent.
Next to The Silmarillion
Love this type of content from you Michael! Keep it up! Much love from Colombia 🇨🇴
My mind was blown when he explained that the she-wolf was political because I jumped instantly to Romulus and Remus. Incredible insight
What a wonderful way to spend the evening! Thank you Michael ❤
Fantastic lecture, Mr. Knowles
Your passion for a specific topic is captivating! Praise the Lord Jesus Christ 🙌
A great pleasure, thanks Michael for your insight, humor and excellent Italian
I recently read The Divine Comedy. I’m really excited to listen to this.
Perfect! I love this poem, and have read it ~7 times to try help other folks read through it. Very fun read, filled with Poetic Justice, excellent
I wasn't sure I would enjoy this . . . however, I find it completely engrossing and delightful. thank you, Michael - great job !!
More of this please! Thank you for all this great content, especially Catholic oriented ones, Michael!
Excellent Lecture! Thank you for the effort you put into this lecture, it is much appreciated.
Thank you Michael. Sending love to all of you from Boise, Idaho
Your best talk ever. I first read the Divine Comedy at age 14.
Same with me . I was 14. I was surprise Dante was able to keep his head
This is one of the best history lectures I've ever heard.
History-Ish. Brilliant book report though

I judge a person's worth by their knowledge of The Divine Comedy. Thank you Michael.
There is only one Judge, and you AINT IT.
I love the Divine Comedy, but it is very shallow for you to do that.
Rather shallow reasoning...wouldn't ya say
This is amazing -- just 20 min in and I've read Divine Comedy my fair share but there's still points being addressed that made me realize how much more there is to it. Really great lecture.
Michael is so well spoken aand intelligent ❤ He's so good at holding these talks. An hour went by! Loved it!
Love it, love it, love it

One can learn so many good things fro. Michael Knowles! Thanks
Just finished reading these for the first time and loved them all. As a protestant evangelical it was extremely interesting and I definitely want to read it again someday.
I love these, something about them is satisfying and wholesome
As a former English literary major, and a current conservative I approve of this video.
Great content! I love Dante’s Divine Comedy so this is a REAL TREAT! Thank you “Professor” Knowles!
I'm reading this currently, this explanation is going to help immensely.
I am so ready to listen to this.
This is the kind of content you won’t get over at Shapiro’s channel.
Duuuh he’s Jewish and this is Catholic as hell lol
“Kamala Harris so bad, Trump so good I gave him money, Desantis super good, libs bad too, judeochristian worldview, Israel do no wrong”

Matt Walsh? Is that you?
🙋❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Dante's Inferno is one of my favorite (audio)books ❤❤❤❤❤ I really appreciate this talk Michael Knowles ❤❤❤❤❤This one I will save in fav's and listen again and again. 🙏Bless your heart 🙏🙋
MORE OF THIS!!
Yes! I’m super down for this. Michael Knowles seems to have a pretty good grasp on the western canon, he should absolutely do more of these. Please, do more of this kind of stuff!
Finished reading this book recently, and taking a Roman history class in college def helped me with context lol
So cool! I just got into the paradiso. What epic timing.
Thanks Michael for your insights shining through the ‘selva’.
I had to read this in the original Italian as an undergraduate. Decades later it still interests me and also makes my head ache.
😄
Excited to watch this Michael! Thank you.
Edit: My favorite of your videos for sure.
Wonderful talk on Dante!!!!
This was so great, would really like to see more of it
I think I’m going to read it again. Love this work
I did the ISI program in the summer of 2014. I wish I were a decade younger to hear this in person!
This is great man. Please do a whole series.
Someone get Wendigoon in here
Thought this exact thought 😂
To be honest, Wendigoon's take on the Divine Comedy was pretty lackluster and short-sighted
❤❤❤❤❤❤ love from Australia.Clay. I knew you were going say that about Cigars... hail emperor Christ
Oh boy, I'm so here for this - this needs to be understood by everyone.
Blud said, "Oh boy" like he's a Disney character or something

Great lecture on Dante Mr Knowles.
Michael being the well read, masterful speaker, intelligent person with great taste that he is. Brilliant.
Don't give him a swelled head... 😅😂😅

I looooove Dante. Thanks so much for posting this. Beautiful!!
Very cool Mike! Would love to see more lectures or extended riffing sessions of this sort
Michael, your a Class-Act. Who else these days stands when a lady enters. God Bless your work sir.
Favorite Michael speech.
I really enjoyed this, Thanks for sharing this lecture with us.
Well verse and quite accurate. Thank you to remind me of this great masterpiece. ✨️🙏🏻✨️
We studied the trilogy in high school. I did not pay attention. I hope this will teach me more than I learned then.
Brilliant.
Just as you were saying, "Check out Yale," I was thinking the same.
Thank you. Your lecture was very enjoyable, and I learned a lot.
Just saying.
I LOVE all the book club content from DW!!
Your Italian accent is so good!
I've just been reading inferno. Excited to see your interpritation!

Thanks for this info. 👍
Everyone always talks about Inferno and if you didn't look further that is all you would ingest
That was such a good talk. Wow.
LOVE THIS STUFF!!!
So, Wendigoon covers this, but I've been waiting for Mr. Knowles to school us! Yay
I was hoping you could have this discussion with Anthony Esolen, and expert in Dante
Dante is one of the gratest alongside Boccaccio and Petrarca. I would like to hear you read some Boccaccio, the funny novels
and Pinocchio.
Dang didn't realize that was Italian. Cool@@reedehinger2636
Your work you put into this is so clear!
Very interesting topic, very knowledgeable, hi from Vancouver Canada
Excellent, thank you mr. Knowles. A detail, Monarchia is pronounced with the accent on i: Monar-kee ah

This was the poem that got me into Italian literature and the Italian language so this is most welcomed

Michael is a gifted speaker. I wonder if he considers that his main vocation.
