- If you were around to see Steve Jobs reveal the MacBook Air on stage back in 2008, then you probably remember how shocking it was to see a notebook that thin. And as usual, Jobs did an amazing job introducing it in the most theatrical way possible. [clip] But if you didn’t get a chance to see that moment and you watch the introduction today, it likely won’t have the same effect. And that’s because the first MacBook Air looks a lot like notebooks we see today. Which means Apple created a MacBook that effectively predicted where the entire notebook market would head, and that’s why Apple asserted that the MacBook Air was the future of the MacBook.
That AIR reveal is etched in my memory, wonderful moment. God I miss Steve Jobs.

Nah it didn't have the Retina display lol. The MacBook 12 is the perfect one for me. And no I didn't experience any of that exaggerated butterfly keyboard nonsense that many BS about.

I had one and it still runs. Got me through my first two years of college before I upgraded to a pro. I spilled a bottle of alcohol on it and the thing STILL runs.

No matter how much hate Apple gets it influences market in every way, computers copy Apple designs and so do smartphones, everyone hates the notch yet so many manufacturers adopted the design 😂❤️🍎

You have to agree all manufacturers copy each other.Chinese manufacturers were first to remove headphone jack, should I say apple copied them.Essential phone was released before iPhone x with a U-notch.Apple saw the potential of fast charging, wireless charging, water proof,OLED display,edge to edge display,raise to wake,tap to wake,facial recognition and copied it.To this day Apple can't beat Android's in fast charging.
More like everybody hates Apple because it influences trends in the tech industry. A lot of us doesn't like the lack of expandability, but sadly, the majority wants something at least of a resemblance of Apple products, so everybody and their dogs makes thinner devices cause that's what sells.
I hate how manufacturers copy them. It's okay if it's something good since everyone does that with each other but don't copy the bad ones

Apple should rebrand the 12" MacBook as a MacBook Air, taking the place of the old 11.6" model.
They clearly had wanted to get back to a place where you had a "MacBook" for consumers, and "MacBook Pro" for professionals. But what the market actually wants is the "MacBook Air" name for consumers. So be it.

I still think that the 11" MBA is the greatest notebook Apple has ever made. While the screen clearly could do with an upgrade, I still take my 2012 maxed out version with me on trips, and it's never missed a beat, and I've even done some light video editing on it.

Not true. If they had kept it, many people would probably complain about it looking outdated.
Apple uses a new display technology now, which doesn’t allow for holes in the back, so they’d have to make a separate light for it, making the lid thicker.
I also miss the Mac startup chime

I LOVE my New MacBook Air that I purchased today for $390 off Craigslist from 2013 its hecka light, compact, 11inches and battery is good its also faster than my old MacBook pro 15 inch from 2008

And today we have the MacBook Air with the M1 Apple Processore which was the first to feature an Apple-designed processor. To it's time it is a game-changer in performance. Today we know the design made in 2008 was made to have an Apple processor inside, because of heat that isn't as much of a problem for the M1 than Intels predecessor before.

Just bought my first Macbook last month. Honestly the Air is an amazing computer, for the price.
Did they predict or did they shape the future (much like with the phone notch)? Also, the biggest complaint I remember hearing back at its release was that decent internet speeds and hotspots were nowhere near as common yet, and were thought to be an absolute necessity for superdrive obsolescence. The Air was simply ahead of its time for that matter, indeed predicting the future.
I still use my 2013 MacBook Air everyday, performance is still just as fast as when I bought it. The only issue is I need to get the battery replaced, can barely hold a charge but that’s to be expected from a machine I’ve been using for years.

Is MacBook Air 2017 a good deal for $700, I want to get one for web browsing and school
i have macbook air 2017, bought it for 700 eur. It will be good for browsing and school work. The screen is ok, it has older type keyboard which i prefer. If you need a laptop for work ( not for editing videos though) it will be great, the biggest plus is the batery power, really good.

Because of the way it’s designed. Its cooling system is optimized for older graphics cards, meaning that newer, more powerful ones wouldn’t be compatible with the Mac Pro
@@constancies False... it's because nor AMD and Nvidia support the MXM interface anymore, Apple used it in the 2013-2015 Mac Pro because at the time AMD and Nvidia supported it, officially, support for MXM ended on 2014-03-13.
I loved the original and second generation of MacBook Air models. The new one??? I would rather get a new MacBook or Pro model. Good history video though.
Cannot believe you skipped over the part were the first Macbook Air's used an Ipod hard drive which failed ALL the time! I had Air back in 08 and I had to get the hard drive replaced 5 times till they gave me a free upgrade to an SSD which was sooooooo small! Great video though!

My school has given every student an 11” Air for the past 4 years and I love it. The battery life is absolutely fantastic and the design is perfect. Though the model we have is the 1.6ghz i5 and only 4 gigs of ram, it’s more than fast enough for basic tasks. The only thing I dislike is the horrible 1366x768 screen. It’s like the absolute worst quality thing on the device. I’d complain about it on a $600 laptop, let alone a $1000 one.
I also have the 11" version, the display is like a shit!
3100 USD for a notebook? At that point, they should have just released the Air in 2010 with the 2nd gen. The 1st gen was such a novelty product. This makes the Apple Vison Pro look dirt cheap in comparison!

Holy smokes, starting price of 1.799$? I can understand if some people thought that was a bit much.
I think buying the older MacBook Air is better than the newer MacBook Air.
It might not be so powerful but it has a brighter display, useful ports, the magnetic port makes everything safer, the better keyboard (I don't like butterfly keyboards because of less key travel) and a bigger battery.

I would recommend everyone who wants to get a Mac to get business work done (Texting, PowerPoint, Websurfing, Emails) to get the old 13" MacBook Air for under 1000$.
I agree. I waited for the new Macbook Air announcement then did exactly that. In the UK you can get the old MA from John Lewis for £950 with the 256 ssd.

History of Pro
For 2019, having a dual-core processor is a shame, especially with a price tag of $1200. You are essentially buying an expensive typewriter.
I use it
Apple not updating the MacBook Air for so long is an example of how modern Apple doles out updates with an eye to squeezing as much profit out of products as possible, even if it means that Apple looks lazy. The latest iPhone SE is a more dignified version of this attitude by using parts and designs they use elsewhere so they spend as little as possible and can offer the best price possible. The big difference is that the latest iPhone SE doesn't lack modern technology, like a decent screen or the latest processor. In fact, if I were to buy an iPhone, I'd probably want the SE for the satisfaction of getting the best value and probably the fastest iPhone because of it's lower-resolution display but the same processor.
Apple didn't update the MacBook Air because they didn't want to spend any more money on their most entry-level MacBook. They could have and maybe should have updated the Air on a regular basis and given it a Retina display, but it made them more money to use outdated parts and let its old design sort of fester as a way of encouraging buyers to purchase a more expensive product.
This actually reminds me of how Apple sold iPhones with 16GB of storage until the iPhone 7 in 2017. Seriously. Apple could give their products a low-sounding entry-level price, but many consumers would pay more to get a 32GB model. In other words, the idea of getting an iPhone sounded cheaper to get more people hooked on the idea, then when they ordered, they'd be willing to go a bit more.
This should all remind the thinking observer that although Apple presents itself as being better than the competition, offering nice things at premium prices, they're not above the kind of sleazy, low cunning of bait and switch tactics.
Apple sets themselves up to be hated. They're always thinking about money and have few scruples about how they get it, unless it affects their bottom line. They only offered to sell cheap replacement batteries to those whose phones they'd slowed down _after_ they'd be called on their underhanded ways, which definitely made them more money by convincing people with slowed iPhones that they needed a new one.
Shame on Apple! They're cowardly! Apple is so greedy and chickenshit that, though they've earned many advantages over their competition, they resort to undignified tactics like carnies tricking rubes at travelling carnivals! And shame on anyone stupid enough that they're blind to what Apple's doing when they buy Apple! Use Apple if you will, but don't be a sheep about it! Then again, Apple deserves its sheep and sheep deserve their apples before they're shorn.

I think they should have named the 12" Macbook "Macbook mini". Just like the iPad air and the iPad mini. Actually the iPad air had a better surface/weight ratio than the iPad mini and it had a full size display, just like the macbook air and the 12" macbook today
