  • High speed smooth chase of a high-end composite Viperjet using open source head tracker by Cliff (dlktdr) and Motionsic BAG (BadAss Gimbal pan & tilt) in an E-flite Viper 90mm EDF jet. The head tracking FPV camera allows chase pilot to intuitively follow lead plane through aerobatic maneuvers without losing sight. It's the most immersive, realistic flying experience possible flying a RC jet!

    Can you put a scaled 20mm cannon with tracers on your plane and shoot that bogie dow? Where's the "Danger Zone" soundtrack, at least?!

      Maybe laser tag is ok. Or owner of that composite Viper would be cross, losing a $5000 plane. I am grateful he trust me enough to let me chase it - high risk of mid-air collision if formation rules not strictly followed.

    These vids are sick!! As close to flying as you can get without actually flying.
    Only way it could be better is if you had 20-30 min's fly time and 5-10 mile range. Imagine how fun that would be.

    Very nice formation flight, especially with dissimilar aircraft! My buddy and I always get out of sync at some point and then start *trying* to find the other. Not easy to do with lots of ground clutter below.
    FPV helps you understand just how easy it is for something like the B-17 midair tragedy down in Dallas last weekend could happen. You were always below the other plane with him in sight where the P-63 was not. Very critical during banking maneuvers!

    • @motionsic
      @motionsic  Год назад +2

      Thanks! Keen observation. Indeed we follow US UPT teachings on formation flying "contracts" between pilots. "Underruns are free" so says the instructor, to always overtake from underneath to keep lead plane in sight at all times and veer to the outside of turns to resolve excessive overtaking speed. My speculation of the tragic mid-air last week was a break down of communications and P-61 pilot was not aware of B-17 position in the pattern and he did not even see it.
      A suggestion for you and your buddy when lost during formation. Establish a rendezvous point over known land mark and have lead circle above it to wait for wingman to rejoin. I think that’s the most efficient way to continue formation training. Cheers!

      @@motionsic Agreed, I heard he was closing on the B-17 at over 60 kts. and obviously could not see it at all.

    Very cool stuff! Question: do you both have air brakes? This might help for formation flying, and landing.

    • @motionsic
      @motionsic  Год назад +3

      Thanks! I agree. Neither of us has air brakes. This was an impromptu flight with a smooth line of sight flyer. For true formation flying, I would fly with a friend that also fly using head-tracking FPV in a plane with similar performance. This one was a reach flying a 6S foamy Viper chasing a 12S composite Viper😊

    Enjoyed that flight. Thanks! Regarding your landing checklist, does "full rates" refer to manual control or gyro?

    • @motionsic
      @motionsic  Год назад +3

      Gyro rates stay the same through the flight. Full rates is referring to elevator control throws. For normal flight and especially formation work, I use reduced throws, especially at high speed. I need full elevator to flare the Viper 90 properly near stall speed and hold the nose up for very important wheelie landing😁

    • @rcnfo1197
      @rcnfo1197 Год назад +2

      @@motionsic Thanks. For my Avanti I moved the CG back far enough to flare using low rates. That way I don't over control when close to stall speed during approach. But you handle high rates very well!

    • @motionsic
      @motionsic  Год назад +1

      @@rcnfo1197 the reflector sight reticle gives me a easy reference not to over rotate at flare. It’s almost cheating😉
