  • Do the Jelly Roll for Lumbar Spine Decompression
In this week’s video, Erik Dalton demonstrates a simple lumbar decompression technique called the Jelly Roll that massage therapists can use on their clients to relieve back pain.
Lumbar decompression, also known as lumbar decompression therapy or spinal decompression, is a non-surgical treatment approach aimed at relieving back pain and related symptoms caused by conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and facet joint syndrome. The benefits of lumbar decompression include:
    1. Pain relief: Lumbar decompression therapy can help alleviate lower back pain, leg pain (sciatica), and other associated symptoms. By reducing pressure on the nerves and decompressing the spinal discs, it may provide relief from pain caused by nerve impingement or compression.
    2. Improved disc health: The therapy aims to create negative pressure within the discs, which can facilitate the retraction of herniated or bulging discs. This may allow the discs to receive more oxygen and nutrients, promoting the healing process and potentially improving their overall health.
    3. Increased mobility and function: Lumbar decompression can help restore spinal mobility and flexibility by reducing restrictions and promoting better alignment of the vertebrae. This improved movement can enhance overall function and allow individuals to engage in daily activities with greater ease.
It's important to note that the effectiveness of lumbar decompression therapy can vary depending on the individual, the specific condition being treated, and other factors. A thorough assessment should be performed on your massage client to ensure that the technique is safe and that there are no contraindications.

This is a lovely adaptation of Aaron Mattes’ isolated stretch. Thank you!

Yes, Aaron and I have been friends for decades. I asked him to co-teach with me in Costa Rica and we had an absolute blast.

Do you recommend this for herniated disc. I would love to do this at home for myself

Probably wouldn't recommend it but I do it every morning and I' have a train wreck for a lumbar spine. It all depends on the type of herniation, age of the person and what the rest if the osteoporatic spine looks like on film. You can try it gently as long as it totally pain-free during and after.

If you're referring to common lipomas, the answer is no.
