10. Kingfishers:
114 different species of kingfishers are found around the world. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Ocenia. Kingfishers are shy birds. These colorful birds are renowned for their dramatic hunting techniques.
9. Grey Crowned Crane:
The Grey Crowned crane is one of Africa's most majestic and beautiful birds. They have feathers with range of colors but are predominantly white. Considered status symbol for the wealthy, these birds are being captured and illegally sold in large numbers. It is the national bird of Uganda.
8. Mandarin Duck:
The Mandarin Duck is widely regarded as the world's most beautiful duck. It is native to Russia, China and Japan. In China, mandarins have long been regarded as symbols of fidelity and pairs were given to brides on their wedding day.
7. Blue and Gold Macaw:
Macaws are a force to be reckoned with. Everything about them is big, from their voices to their attitudes. The Blue and Gold macaw is aptly named, with a gorgeous blue body and dark lemon yellow chest. They are apt talkers and able to repeat simple words and phrases. Their range includes Venezuela South to Peru, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.
6. Eurasian Hoopoe:
Eurasian Hoopoe is a very peculiar species. Ornithologists have placed it in a family of its own, which makes them one of a kind. They don't make nests by gathering twigs. Rather they look for holes in tree trunks or cliffs. These birds have a courtship ritual that revolves around food.
5. Silver Pheasant:
Found in mountainous forests of China, Thailand and Vietnam. They are super birds in the aviary and are fairly quiet. The cocks, like most of the pheasants, like to put on a good display during the breeding season.
4. Blue Jay:
Blue above, light grey below. Black and white marks on the wings and tail. Blue jays are highly adaptable and intelligent birds. They can make variety of sounds including excellent imitation of several hawk calls. Commonly found in much of Eastern and central North America.
3. Flamingo:
Flamingos live in and around lagoons and lakes. A flock of flamingos is called a flamboyance. Flamingos are very social. They live in colonies of thousands of birds. In flight, flamingos present a beautiful sight. The birds striking pink color comes from its food, which contains carotenoid pigments.
2. Golden Pheasant:
Red and Gold males are stunning and unmistakable. Native to China but introduced locally in Britain and Hawaii. There is very little known about their behaviour in the wild.
1. Indian Peafowl:
This bird is one of the most recognizable birds in the world. Male peafowls(peacocks) are known for their piercing calls and extravagant plumage. They have beautiful eye-spotted feathers, which they display as part of a courtship ritual. The bird is celebrated in Hindu and Greek mythology and is the national bird of India. They are also the largest flying birds with wingspan up to 1.4m to 1.6m.
