I don't have a specific one in mind, but how about something from the 1980's version of "Clash of the Titans" or even older (even black and white?) Godzilla movies? What could you do to make those seem uncharacteristically good? Like, way too good for their time? Seeing modern VFX seamlessly inserted into an old black and white monster movie would be an epic technological and artistic achievement!
@@jhinabloomingflower807 i mean since theyre vids arent monetized they focus pretty heavy on patreon and I think theyll do more vids like this fixing stuff
Looks much better! Much more natural looking in the face, but doesn't look as angry/ferocious as the original. Something about the eyelids, sockets, brows, etc....can't put my finger on it exactly.
Neat episode and a fun look back. No surprise that VFX re-done in 2019 would look a bit better than VFX created in 2000. Some helpful context: late delivery from the studio meant that the post production on this part of the film was completed by ILM in a *very* short time relative to the complexity of the VFX needed. We weren't able to start on this stuff until the last 3 months of a 9 month schedule.
Probably cause of the level of skills it requires. They hit the jackpot, cause unlike other channels where it’s easy to mimic. You can’t become a VFX artist overnight. They won’t have much competition
I wish they wt fix the CGI and re-released this series. Totally among my faves. You guys did great for one day, but I honestly liked the big puffs of dust more. I felt it made the ancientness of the tomb more real.
His left eye pops out a bit just after 9:20 and right before 9:22. Photoshop a few frames and it's fixed. Good job for such a shot time! I always liked the movie and thought they did a decent job, for 18 years ago.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the eye-bulge. It's an odd artifact. I'd also say it seems like the Crew guys are perhaps too young to have seen The Rock's signature WWE (and/or WWF) snarl - that split-mouth thing with one side up and one side down, they didn't seem to realize was a deliberate affectation. The CGI version is definitely exaggerated, but the DeepFake seems (understandably) unable to duplicate that expression. Cool exercise in any case. Amazing what's possible after 20 years.
I really love the videos and the sponsor segments because of the timer. I watch them because I know I could skip them if I wanted to. Thanks and keep up the great work guys.
The original CG was horrific even by 90s standards. I remember sitting in the theater thinking "someone actually signed off on this?" I've never understood why they didn't just green screen the Rock with green gloves and pants and add the scorpion elements to the footage. It might've been wonky but I'm pretty sure the technology existed and it would've looked infinitely better than the nightmare they put out.
Agree. They shouldve never tried to make him completely cg and shouldve mixed his real upper body with green screen as you said. It wouldve came out infinitely better even if it was bad. What hey ended up with was atrocious.
You should read a few issues of Cinefex. Each issue describes the front-to-back special effects planning that went into several movies, some great, some disappointing. It was amazing reading the process, and often a terrible shot was simply the result of overconfidence early on, corners cut, and a lack of time to correct by the time the problem was known.
Feels like a week would be enough to get a 'perfect' shot, if they do the corrections on a more frame-by-frame basis, but then they'd have to drop everything else in their lives
Agreed. Could still use some lighting tweaks here and there especially when the door opens, some cast shadow work would really help, but really the neck is a big problem area. Its going to be crazy to see where Deepfaking goes in the next couple years.
The eyes constantly change in size, and all the improvements they did in the lighting of the face are now covered by the deepfake, I did honestly expect something better.
Textures and lighting look waaaay better BUT the facial expressions IMO actually look worse on the new one. The originals made sense, the Scorpion King had smug im gonna destroy you mortals kind of attitude. The new one looks like the Rock is confused as to why hes attached to a scorpions body lol
I think this is because the facial expressions in the original shot were not natural. What I mean is that, that sequence of expressions was more thought than felt, and when they deep fake it into a human face, you realise how unnatural it is. Perhaps if they had asked the rock to act that part and then used it as a reference to make the shot, it would have looked better.
@@MultiCaRaDeCoNcHa They should've gotten the final Deep-fake footage, then manipulated that with Deep-fake again using The Scorpion King images. The second time over should've smoothed out the weird expressions even more, and make it look a bit tidier/not-awkward.
Let's not forget the amount of CGI in this movie. It's overwhelming. You know this team was told, "looks good, move on to the next scene." There is some cringe but this was a massive project with probably a year or less to do all the CG.
Yeah, first Mummy used it more sparingly, mostly for mummies themselves and scarabs, but the sequel had the little shrunken head dudes, a lot of vegetation done in CG, and tons of effects in the final fight with everything collapsing, hell-like underworld with hands pulling the heroes, and the scorpions.
Hey you are that composer guy! I love u works, i have been done some stuff, could give me your godnnes feedback Lord? MIDI : ruclips.net/video/1wjn0gIMjdE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/8mUbnfXVOPk/видео.html
Well, firstly, they did it in a day. Secondly, they had to use a random video for his face. If the rock was there, obviously they'd be able to recreate and match his head movement to the cgi.
They probably didn't train the neural network enough. I'm sure with more image references and more training they could have done much better. But it would have taken a lot more time.
My complaint which you can't really fix is the texture matching, the skin on his chest doesn't match his face, it's like Virtual Reality vs Augmented reality, just because one part is better than the other doesn't automatically make it better, because it sometimes looks better if everything fits and matches better together.
Oh yeah, back in 02' that scene was considered terrible, my friends and I figured it was due to budget constraints, or something. This remake you guys did looked much better, but I was honestly hoping that you would use like a real picture or something. Great job!

They're not random though. He is expressing various degrees of emotions from feeling uncomfortable while walking through the door to scanning the room looking for the perturbations while wearing a threatening face to considering the people in the room as inferior beings with his smirk.
In the final version, he looses the threatening face part and just looks like the innocent dude from the Scorpion King movie. I'd also argue they should have aged him a bit by including some wrinkles which would have also helped a bit.

Crew: I love love LOVE your work! So informative and entertaining! Now that two years has passed since you posted this video, I'd be curious what new advancements in technology would let you do this type of work even better. With that in mind, I'd like to see you improve an even older VFX shot.

What do you guys expect from a movie made in 2003?

Blearky was literally just thinking the same thing
OMG so freaking good! i broke out laughing when you paused your version and flipped back to the OG version HAHAHAHAHAH!
All in that movie was awful for the time... Those creatures chasing them in the jungle were laughable bad...
Probably time and money along with availability.
This was really well done! I officially deem you worthy of continuing the "VFX Artists React" series!
A lot better, not perfect (more time with the Deepfake would've helped but you did say you did it in a day). Top job.
Feels like a week would be enough to get a 'perfect' shot, if they do the corrections on a more frame-by-frame basis, but then they'd have to drop everything else in their lives
yes
Yeah, but given the circumstances, they did a damn good job.

@@LapFox Nope. You can always see the switch between the real actor and the CGI model of Keanu Reeves.

@@LapFox As the scene wears on the agents begin to look more and more fake. It's fine at first but it slowly devolves into a PS2 game.
@@MultiCaRaDeCoNcHa
They should've gotten the final Deep-fake footage, then manipulated that with Deep-fake again using The Scorpion King images. The second time over should've smoothed out the weird expressions even more, and make it look a bit tidier/not-awkward.
Agreed ...the original one is better
the new one is like "do you smell what the rock is cooking" :/
True.
now can you go back in time and splice the footage in before it's shown all over the world?

This would be a grandfather's paradox.

I don’t know, obviously the face looks way better, but it’s kinda angled weirdly in relation to his head.
Well, firstly, they did it in a day. Secondly, they had to use a random video for his face. If the rock was there, obviously they'd be able to recreate and match his head movement to the cgi.
@@bilal00276 people still have this profile pic in 2020? w h y
They probably didn't train the neural network enough. I'm sure with more image references and more training they could have done much better. But it would have taken a lot more time.
@@aldobernaltvbernal8745 😂😂😂😂😂
My complaint which you can't really fix is the texture matching, the skin on his chest doesn't match his face, it's like Virtual Reality vs Augmented reality, just because one part is better than the other doesn't automatically make it better, because it sometimes looks better if everything fits and matches better together.
Oh yeah, back in 02' that scene was considered terrible, my friends and I figured it was due to budget constraints, or something. This remake you guys did looked much better, but I was honestly hoping that you would use like a real picture or something. Great job!
