It actually gives the power. The first scene is actually really, really good, and probably the best representation of the feeling of firearms I've seen.
Adding Peter to the team was undeniably one of the best decisions they ever did. Sure his wick-version was way over the top, but honestly i would LOVE to see a cartoony adult action movie with his style.. a movie that knows its over the top and loves it.
The style actually reminds of some great Japanese animators like yutaka nakamura and hiroyuki imaishi, just translated to real life. Too bad that style could never be used seriously in live-action.

It seems like that firecracker tail sound wasn't ideal on its own, it felt like it was too different from the gun; perhaps you could have also included a layer of convolution reverb where you put the selected gun sound in a similar room, fairly easy to do with a good convolution reverb plugin
Yo he should have also mixed the original audio in at like 15-25%. Additionally, I feel like it wasn’t compressed enough, & not nearly enough low tones. Maybe pop a touch of low pass on there. Surround panning & white noise as well. Call of Duty has better sound than this. lol.
too quiet and no echo other than that its really fucking close to what a P30L sounds like in real life. go and send a few rounds downrange using the same model and you will see. its a very fun handgun so don't worry about having a good time.

It's WAY too tinny and shallow, no depth or low end at all You want more oomph more thunk, it adds way more impact Kind of like how movie silencers have the satisfying plink we all know and love, in reality obviouslty they just sound like 75% of a normal gun, same with regular gunshots, you need to zazz it up The ILM gunshots from Indiana are still some of the most satisfying ever, it's so punchy and intense

As a sound engineer I have to say that the gun sounds for me don’t have enough low end punch. When you’re next to a gun firing it’s a truly visceral experience, you feel it as well as hear it. Obviously you can’t have such hot levels in a film, but underpinning the gun sound with some sub-bass pushes the plosive sound of the gunshot forward transmitting the feeling of power to the audience.
The movies incorporate the gunshots into the music and I think Sam's realistic sound kind of loses that. You're sub bass solution is really great because you still get that visceral feeling without the trade-off of a movie filled with shapeless noise.
agreed, especially since they said the gun doesn't have a suppressor, I was definitely expecting more of a full sound, getting rid of the airsoft sounds was a huge improvement for me though. The first time I watched I almost thought those sounds were a part of the background music

This brings me back to a time in my life (in the early 2000s) where I did graphics for fun, self taught, and I would have loved this as an instructional video for muzzle flashes. Great work.
Peter's version is John Wick playing with goofy cheat codes enabled and it's glorious. Makes me want to see live action Halo with the goofier skulls active.
I didn't even think the sound was too much of an improvement (somehow lots missing on the low end, you could have definitely gone for a lot more distortion), but what Peter did deserves the highest praise.
The movies effects were probably limited to its budget. Can’t imagine how much the movie would be with every gun scene having this much detail and time. And in John wick, there are many gun shooting scenes.

The visuals are improved but the sound design doesn't feel natural, because the sound seems consistent even though he's in a different part of the house that seems more open, but the Big Wick Energy is perfect 👌🍜 "quality noodles"
The revamped sound design also lacks the punchiness of the original, which I would imagine is why they went for less realistic design. By having the audio trails, everything blends together, but the original's distinct, sharp shots are part of what sell the lethal precision on display.

I agree. The individual gunshot sound in a vacuum is much better. But in the clip there's.... how do I put it. Its not 3d, its all the same sound like its all happening from the same position and the same distance. It should sound different from the hallway to what it sounds like in the open stairway. Hell it souls sound different with people in the way.
Yeah, the new gunshot sounds still sounded like they were outside. In a small house like that, they should sound a lot more “full” since the sound wouldn’t have much room to disperse. Not to mention, John Wick should have the worlds worst Tinnitus lol

I think it was unoticeable except for the sound design. The sound stuck out, but not in a good way to me. It was cool hearing a realistic interpretation, but it sounded much more flat & didn't have the same punch as the original.

I didn't even think the sound was too much of an improvement (somehow lots missing on the low end, you could have definitely gone for a lot more distortion), but what Peter did deserves the highest praise.
All the clones got shut down. So it's just Peter now.
It's one of those things that doesn't seem very big but does wonders for the intensity and immersion of the scene.

The movies effects were probably limited to its budget. Can’t imagine how much the movie would be with every gun scene having this much detail and time. And in John wick, there are many gun shooting scenes.

Gun’s dont have huge fireball’s including the pistols that were being used. They just made it more terrible

The change to the gun sound effects was the biggest improvement I noticed.

The visuals are improved but the sound design doesn't feel natural, because the sound seems consistent even though he's in a different part of the house that seems more open, but the Big Wick Energy is perfect 👌🍜 "quality noodles"
The revamped sound design also lacks the punchiness of the original, which I would imagine is why they went for less realistic design. By having the audio trails, everything blends together, but the original's distinct, sharp shots are part of what sell the lethal precision on display.

Yeah and they forgot that in the original there’s a silencer in the guns mouth that was why the original had to sound like that. Original is way better for me

I agree. The individual gunshot sound in a vacuum is much better. But in the clip there's.... how do I put it. Its not 3d, its all the same sound like its all happening from the same position and the same distance. It should sound different from the hallway to what it sounds like in the open stairway. Hell it souls sound different with people in the way.

Liked the visuals of the second one, with the gun sounds of the first. And Peter's one is simply incredible.
I think what this illustrates is that all great VFX ride the fine line between realism and overblown drama.

For the sound design add an extra snap/crack with maybe a single, almost immediate echo. It was really good.
Yeah, the new gunshot sounds still sounded like they were outside. In a small house like that, they should sound a lot more “full” since the sound wouldn’t have much room to disperse. Not to mention, John Wick should have the worlds worst Tinnitus lol
Agreed! The shots sounded a bit dry and it didn’t match the environment, but it was still way better! Give it some atmosphere to fill it out, and they’re solid gunshots.

The audio was the first thing i noticed. The sounds for the gun shots are definitely too short in the original version.
I think it was unoticeable except for the sound design.
The sound stuck out, but not in a good way to me.
It was cool hearing a realistic interpretation, but it sounded much more flat & didn't have the same punch as the original.

I love the improved muzzle effects but I miss the old gun's sound, as for Big Wick energy that was just awesome all around
Keep in mind they would have had to do foley and background music for it to compare better. Sam only focused on the gun sounds :)
I agree partially. The firecrackers are a little high pitched and tinny - they should be deeper, so I like the original better for that. But I like the Sam's followthrough.
IMO the gunshots were stylized to come together more like the drum track in a song
