Good reaction. Su-metal liked the sound of this song so much when she first heard it. It reminded her of one of her favourite songs ('Road of Resistance') and she said she wanted to write the lyrics ... which is what she did.
They do get the "manufactured" label thrown at them - usually as an insult. However there is a difference - generally a "manufactured" group or band is put together with a set, tried and tested formula, they have 4 or 5 spots for people who look right and who can maybe sing, but that isn't necessarily the most important thing. There is an identified target audience almost guaranteed to buy in, the music and songs will follow a set formula (again tried and tested) and the whole thing is almost guaranteed to be successful commercially.
BABYMETAL were put together, but as a passion project by one man who was inspired initially by the talents of a young girl he saw performing with her previous JPop trio - he was most impressed with her unusual no holds barred, powerful singing style. He wondered if she might be able to front a metal band and not be drowned out by the music, but rather than screaming or growling she should just sing her own way.
He wanted to try something new, something that had not been done before, mixing metal (the music he loved most) with the JPop aesthetics. He also thought it would be interesting to add choreographed dance to the metal, so he chose her two young (and also very talented) friends to support her with backing vocals and choreographed dance designed to hype, involve and include the audience.
There was no known audience, this was something new and untried, something original and unique and it was based around the talents of the girls themselves. Right from the start he mixed all sorts of musical styles that had not been mixed together - no set formula, no two songs alike, but all with the metal base.
Their talent agency only allowed him his experiment because there was no financial risk - they certainly weren't going to invest in anything metal related since that was a stagnant and declining market in Japan at the time and they thought it would be a short-lived and ultimately failed and soon forgotten experiment that would last maybe 2 years at most until the lead singer was 15 and would leave the parent group to develop and follow her career in whatever way she would choose.
Against all the odds BABYMETAL started to find an audience of their own that nobody (except perhaps their producer) would have predicted. They were attracting old metalheads who had drifted away as they started their own families or who had perhaps become disillusioned. Being as they had started within the Idol system they also attracted younger fans who had never heard or been exposed to rock and metal (those genres got very little air time on radio or TV in Japan), so this was new and exciting to them.
Only after they had proved themselves, playing for free in shopping malls, a food court stage normally reserved for comedians at one festival, tiny venues with a 150 capacity and this unexpected new audience appeared did the talent agency start to provide any extra funding for live musicians and slightly bigger venues.
You are absolutely right to identify them as a gateway band, something not as harsh and frightening for people not used to listening to rock and metal. They got those people to see there is something about the music itself and some of them have gone on to explore the metal and rock music and bands they might have previously shied away from .... and the rock and metal scene in Japan has become revitalised, quite possibly due in part at least, to BABYMETAL.

I meant to add I completely agree about going to see a show. I've seen many of the great live bands over the years, same as you have, and I've been to some great concerts. But they were mostly just concerts, the music was great, the guys on stage did their thing and I had a good time.
I saw BABYMETAL and they don't just play a concert, they don't just go on stage and sing their songs, they put on a show, a whole performance. I have never been better entertained than the times I saw them ... and that was in the UK without all the elaborate stages etc. They are on a completely different level in the big arena shows in Japan where they use their concerts to progress their lore. They even have a whole story line running throughout some of those concerts - it is almost rock theatre and not just a concert.

    Great reaction, thanks!
I absolutely see your point about them being a gateway for people who are not into metal to join this wonderful world. It's totally true and it happens every day. But I personally went the opposite way (lifelong metalhead here, old school) and I've heard of many people in the same situation. Being sick and tired of listening always the same while the whole genre was getting old. For me (and I believe I speak for all us) BABYMETAL represents a breath of fresh air.
I wouldn't use the word "manufactured" as it's used mainly as an insult to them basically due to their origins within a pop group put by a talent agency. But the fact is the way and circumstances they were formed were nothing like a studied company product. It was more the personal project, or better, the almost crazy vision of one man who believed that he could revitalize the genre he loved by adding some elements nobody dared to add before. He wasn't taken very seriously by his company at first but it was so new and shocking that it didn't take them long to stand out. The key here (pun not intended) was the total respect for the genre: they weren't a parody group, they were serious. Later, with the addition of a real live band, they were able to tour worldwide and perform in big metal festivals like Sonisphere without getting booed off the stage by the classic gatekeepers. Honestly, leaving the crowd from Sonisphere 2014 begging for more at the end of their performance, is quite impressive, even today.
So... are they uncommon and unorthodox (if that's a thing in metal)? Yes, they are. But their music and their shows speak for themselves.
Do they need those big stage setups? No. They perform on "normal" stages outside Japan selling out the majority of the venues. People leave those concerts totally amazed.
But you still want to see one of those big shows, right? Of course! That's every fan's dream. Including mine. A dream I will fulfill (hopefully) soon. 😊
    Until next time!

Su has one of the most iconic, recognisable and perfect voices in Metal. Babymetal have been a phenomenon for over a decade and they just keep getting better. Always best live though they have many superb MV's too.

  • @i.shuuya3231
    @i.shuuya3231 10 месяцев назад +27

Su-metal herself wrote the lyrics of this song.
And about the "manufactured" argument, it's always been absolutely ridiculous when talking about BABYMETAL.
Be for f'ing real, who tf creates, 13 years ago, a kawaii metal group expecting it to be a success, let alone a commercial success? They probably thought it wouldn't even last a year and it'd just be a silly experiment.
Not to mention, they (the BABYMETAL team) had little to no resources except for their passion and creativity.
They shot their first MV in a basement, wearing borrowed clothes from their friends and relatives. They played shows for less than 100 people in which most of them were relatives and parents of their friends.
They had to play in anime conventions and food courts. For many years they couldn't even afford a band.
What do we mean exactly when we call them "manufactured"? Because to me, it means the creation of something carefully planned and studied to be a success. You hop on current trends taking little to no risks. You have big productions from the start and so on (more or less what we see in k-pop and the big companies)

I think that a lot of the negativity comes from people, admittedly like I USED TO BE, that there was "something" wrong with the concept. Funny enough, if asked, the excuses given are pretty lame. I started with Lovebites, then to Band-Maid, and now, Baby Metal... At 55, I was more than a little set in my way. LOL

Babymetal gets compared to the Spice Girls sometimes, when it comes to the manufactured thing. my question to them is always, if the Spice Girls weren't manufactured, would you be a fan? I bet not. So what does being manufactured have to do with anything?

    • @Ganimal83
      @Ganimal83 10 месяцев назад +6

@@ThePentagenarian Amen to that lol. Babymetal is definitely manufactured and "gimmicky", but to me, that in itself is not a bad thing. It's how a group goes about it that makes a big difference. I mean, KISS and Slipknot are gimmicky too. Babymetal is 100% genuine in their act, never pretended to be anything but who they are, and at the end of the day, all talents in the group (producer, songwriters, the girls, the session band, the stage crew), always puts on one heck of a show, for well over 10 years. Besides, I just enjoy their music and it makes me happy.
Also, over time, a few nuggets of info I learned that really helped me gain more respect for Babymetal:
1). Koba-metal, the metalhead producer who started all this, accompanies Babymetal often during tours. I saw a picture of him mopping the stage floor at the 2016 Download Festival (UK). It rained, and Babymetal decided to not delay/cancel and perform anyway. Respect.
2). They built their fan base from nothing. "Cute Metal" is not a proven money-making concept, so Babymetal established this entire genre on its own, and became THE concept after earning their fan base through sheer effort.
3). The work ethic of the girls is mind-blowing. Asia, Europe, and US tours since 2014 (when 16 / 15 years old), and many concerts in Japan since 2010, while the girls are finishing high school and later college. This year, they are scheduled for a total of ~100+ shows out of 365 days, that's like 1 show every 3 - 4 days while performing intense choreography and hitting notes, just insane!
4). The session band that plays for Babymetal live (Kami Band) has had the same core members for the vast majority of Babymetal's shows. The only major change was the addition of Kami Band West (Americans) in 2019 to support Babymetal's stepped-up tour intensity.

Su and Moa were 12 and 11 years old when Babymetal was formed as a sub-unit of an idol group. Su is turning 26 next month and Moa is 24. They have literally been Babymetal for more than half their lives and not just that, but half their childhood. I think that's very rare. They've had no other public side projects since graduating from the idol group in 2012 and 2014 respectively. They feel a great attachment to the group, the music and their purpose. BABYMETAL is an experience. You go to a BABYMETAL show and you are not a spectator, you are a participant. You are part of the show with lines to chant, sing or scream and "choreography" (jumps, pumps, etc) to perform. BABYMETAL is the only group (I dont call them a band, they are backed by a band) that can stop entire circle pits mid-song for call and response and then start them back up again. This is why we are called THE ONE. We are ONE with BABYMETAL and the Kami Band at the live shows.

The title of the song is "Shingeki" 神撃, which they have conveniently translated as "Divine Attack". The event where this performance was filmed was called "Babymetal Begins - The Other One: Black Night & Clear Night". It was two night performance that took place at PIA Arena MM in Yokohama on the 1st and 2nd of April this year, so the "Clear Night" reference in the name of the video indicates that this was on the second of the two nights. The two nights had different setlists, with each night being a mixture of songs from the current album "The Other One", and some old favourites. I was lucky enough to be one of a small contingent of about 50 international fans that traveled to Japan to attend both nights.
I used to be one of the metal hardcores that didn't want to give Babymetal a fair go for a long time, but eventually I simply couldn't deny how good they were at what they do and before I knew it I had fallen into the foxhole and become a kitsune (a Babymetal fan).
You're completely right about Babymetal acting as a gateway to metal. That was the original intention that inspired Babymetal's producer Kobametal to form the group. He wanted to revive interest in heavy music in Japan, and though that blending metal with J-pop would be a good way to introduce metal to a more mainstream audience. One of the great things about Babymetal is the incredibly diverse audience that they draw in; its everything from hardcore metal heads, to pop fans, to kids and their parents. It's a very different kind of crowd to the average metal show.
The criticism that they are manufactured is a common one, and it is sort of true in the sense that they were put together by a management company, but it isn't at all an accurate reflection of Babymetal's journey to success. They started as a crackpot experimental side project of a J-pop idol group called "Sakura Gakuin", which was managed by the Amuse Inc. talent agency. Babymetal was only supposed to be a sub-unit of SG and was only supposed to contribute a few songs to SG albums, and to do the odd performance at SG events. It was only planned to last the three years that lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) was going to be part of SG (members graduate when they turn 15), but they quickly developed a following, and by the time Su graduated from SG, Babymetal was too popular to disband, so it was spun off into the independent act that it is to this day, and has ended up outlasting the group that it spawned from, as SG disbanded in 2021.

Great reaction!! As one pentagenarian to another, I totally get what you are saying. I've been a metalhead since my early teens (ever since I discovered Kill 'Em All from Metallica) and this was pretty much the only genre I would listen to.
Then early 2000's, I sort of got bored with the metal scene. It seems all they were doing is re-hashing old stuff. My kids also like metal (they pretty much did not have a choice as this is all that was playing in the household😃) and my daughter was really into anything Japanese. One day, she showed me BABYMETAL in the mid 2010's and I've been hooked ever since.
No matter what your favorite metal genre is, you will find it in one of their songs. They also mix in some Ska, Rap, Indian,... Heck, they even have a song with a saxophone solo in it.
But if you like the real heavy stuff, I suggest BABYMETAL DEATH (Legend 1997 version) or Sis Anger (this one does not feature Su-Metal, only Moa-Metal and Yui-Metal).

this song is indeed one of about a half-dozen BM songs that has legitimately made it to my "anytime" playlist - it really is that good. and definitely track down the lyrics for this one (i know there's a version out there with english subtitles enabled) --- lyrically, it's not simply "good for Su's first attempt" , it's legitimately one of their best written songs IN ADDITION TO being 100% on-brand ... i really look forward to seeing if she ends up doing more writing moving forward.
being almost a pentagenarian myself (2 more years to go), as well as a recovering "metal purist" curmudgeon, i can definitely say from experience that you do indeed eventually reach an age where you learn to put down the pretense and just enjoy a thing for what it is. also, the more i understand about Kobametal AND the more i learn about the mythological "lore", the more i can appreciate this as a _project_.
    P.S.
as you may have figured out from the final frame of the video, the _song_ name is indeed Divine Attack, and Clear Night was the name of that particular show.

One the biggest misconceptions about these girls is that they're "manufactured". Did someone come up with the idea of combining J-pop and metal? Yes, but if you want to call that manufactured then you also need to take into account that they were dead broke when they started, playing shows for free, borrowing stage clothes from friends and getting people to mimic a backing band until they could afford to pay for musicians that would become The Kami Band. It wasn't until management saw the following they were building that they began to get financial support. As both a Babymetal and Pink Floyd fan (who has seen both with their big show) they are both great live experiences.
Yes, their are 3 types of shows:
    1. the big show which is the live event experience
    2. the live show where you can see musicians deliver their technical skill, usually a smaller stage/club
    3. the live show where you go to have the audience interaction, the rock star on stage who sweeps up the crowd to yell along with him or her
Often metal bands combine 2 and 3 or sometimes 1 and 3 (Nightwish maybe)
Babymetal can deliver and has delivered multiple combinations.
Babymetal can deliver the 1 as you just saw. Babymetal can also combine it with 3. Please react to: Babymetal Headbanger at Legend 1997 (Legend 1997 is the name of the show)
Babymetal can also deliver some of 2 and combine it with 3. Sadly the focus has shifted a bit away from 2.
And Babymetal can deliver all 1 and 2 together: please react to Babymetal Rondo of Nightmare with the Mischiefs of Metal Gods Intro at Budokan Black Night 2014 (Budokan venue in Tokyo, Black Night 2014 is 1o of 2 shows at that venue in 2014).

It was Babymetal that got me back into listening to rock and metal. I'm an OG prog rocker, (think ELP, Procol Harum, Yes). Much of the rock during the 80s-90s I just found boring. Someone suggested I listen to Road of Resistance and I was stunned.
This got me into watching reactions and enjoying all of Babymetal's catalogue. From there, I started watching Nightwish, UTA, Arch Enemy, Amaranthe, Sabaton, and my now favorite band, Epica. They drew me back to the days when I could expect the unexpected.
For the most metal performance I've seen, you need to watch the performance of Babymetal's Death at Legend 1997. I guarantee you, you've never seen anything like it.

Su-metal wrote the lyrics to this song. She has an amazingly powerful and pure voice. They could stand on a bare stage and perform these songs brilliantly & in fact they have. . Every band is manufactured yes even the Beatles. Everything else you said was true.

if you ever get around to doing Monochrome (probably my favorite BM song), might i suggest doing it as a "double feature"? that is, both the Official video AND the Piano version (btw, the official is a lyric vid in english, and the piano version does indeed have english subtitles enabled)

You did not even hit the tip of the iceberg. These former girls were railed into a different education system focused on singing, dancing and performing from an early age. To this extent, this only exists in Japan and South Korea.

This is a great track - with the lyrics by the lead singer. The track is WAY better with the intro buildup if you get a chance to see it - good reaction though! Nice that you pretty much nailed part of their original purpose (more for girls originally I think) - and Babymetal really is to be seen imo - and they specialise in being live - they rarely if ever disappoint (Glastonbury was not their fault :P). Like it or not it's undoubtedly metal - if somewhat melodious for some people.

Babymetal Live are impossible 🤣the only downside is that if you really want to see a crazy stage you need to see them in Japan because the production is out of this world like the one concert with Su Metal and foxes with chains , but still a must see, i can't wait to see them again but with the new "formation" this december :D
BTW, be ready because usuall reaction videos about Babymetal are killed very very fast, the "Idols world" is very harsh to the bone :(
And you are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo right about Babymetal haters or Japanese metal...

people who have a problem with them not writing their own songs are not thinking rationally, by far the majority of musicians do not play music they wrote themselves, the very best musicians almost exclusively do not write their own songs and the very best song writers almost exclusively do not perform the songs they wrote. There are a few exceptions but if people are going to limit themselves to only those few artists are just arbitrarily denying themselves a vast amount of great music. Ironically this song was written by the lead singer.

it is BABYMETAL (All caps 1 word) However "Babymetal" is also proper usage. There is no space. It's weird because the fans usually call them BM as if it was 2 words but its not. Fans refer to Band -Maid as B-M as their official name has the hyphen in it. So when writing BABYMETAL, you can use BABYMETAL, Babymetal, or simply BM. For Band-Maid, It's Band-Maid or B-M.

"Divine Attack" is one of the better tracks off their last album "The Other One" but, in my opinion, that album lacks the essence that defines BABYMETAL - kawaii metal. It isn't a bad album, but it just doesn't feel like a BABYMETAL album. Also, I'm of the belief that the official visualizer of this song on their RUclips channel is slightly better; it's more "artistic", and I'm not a big fan of the "fly-by" camera-work in this video. Regarding production: a venue is going to be a deciding factor in the production of a concert. The performance and production in a stadium is going to vastly different than that at a music festival or relatively small music hall or theater. But anyway . . . .
All I can add after that is I recommend that you peruse the RUclips playlist "BABYMETAL Top Twenty" for songs I believe to be better than this one and for arguably the best videos that can be found on RUclips for those songs.
    Keep rockin' BABYMETAL!!!
    KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

Its very calculated & formulaic image wise, which for me is off putting. In that there are rigidly adhered to & set dance routines & no spontaneity . The music isnt bad, i think it will definitely appeal to a metal teen demographic.

The time has come, stand up
    進め 描いた 明日へ
    Time to go your way
    切り開け 道 この手で
    儚い願いでも
    運命に背いても
    逆らう価値あれば
    捧げろ こころを
The time has come, stand up.
    見たい 未来が あるなら
    Time to go your way
    突き破れ 壁 この手で

    [Eng]
    We approach the long night
    Noisy wind is blowing
    The powerful gather here
    Holding the blade of heart
    Oath together, shout together
Let’s start this journey from here
The escape route is cut off
    The silence is broken
The time to battle has come
    Raise your hands
    The time has come.
    Stand up.
    Continue to your imagined tomorrow
It’s time to go your way
    Finish this open road
    Even short lived desire
    Goes against your destiny
    If it’s worth opposing,
    To sacrifice your heart
    The time has come.
    Stand up.
If you want to see the future
It’s time to go your way.
    Break through the barrier
    The time has come.
    Stand up.
    Continue to your imagined tomorrow
It’s time to go your way.
    Finish this open road
    Continue to your imagined tomorrow
    Finish this open road

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。You are right. BABYMETAL show is a comprehensive art like an opera. You see everything on stage like magnificence, virtuosity, elegance, joy, pristine and celestial beauty, heftiness and so on.
I witnessed this very performance at the venue on Day-2 (April 2) when the newly born BABYMETAL with Momometal began with full joy 😍. The band in the girls' back was Western Kamis and I appreciate their devoted support that has made this and recent shows amazing😍. Thank you Chris, CJ, Anthony and Clint. You guys are unsung heroes whom everybody loves.
Su-Metal, the lyricist of this song, explained in an interview the reason why she chose a phrase "(Time to) go your way" in stead of "go our way" whereas this song is a kind of call to build up courage of BABYMETAL themselves and their followers. She said like "It may be better with 'our', but I though it is adamant or pushy to fans who have various tastes in music. They do not need to accept everything about BABYMETAL. I hope they follow us at their own discretion. In addition, I was seeking some words thinking of people who might be encouraged to brace themselves up or to explore their own ways with the help of powers given by my lyrics. Certainly the connotation of this song implies 'let's go together' but I hold a individual fan in high esteem. [source : magazine PMC vol.27 page 38] What a thoughtful person our Queen is !

Babymetal is not only a gateway for more people to know metal, but they have also done so with the entire Japanese metal scene, they have given it more visibility around the world.
I was already a metalhead before listening to babymetal but personally they made me interested in jpop and idol music, thanks to bm I became more open-minded about music and I am very grateful for that :)

    Welcome back to BabyMetal's metalverse.🦊🤘🌐
Nice to see you're back with more BM songs.
This was the 1st single out of five until album released in March, and is a banger for sure. SuMetal got the lyrics credits on this and all of us are proud and happy she reached one of her dreams, just looking that SuMetal T pose you can notice she's really proud too.
"Divine Attack - Shingeki" got some drum&bass combined with the heavy riffs of metal sound that i really love to jam.
    Here's some official info:
    Divine Attack - Shingeki (CAVALRY)
    _The time has come._
_Trascending many barriers and creating many legends, where will BABYMETAL head next? The power and dynamism of the song depicts a cavalry preparing for their future battle._
We can say this song bring back the spirit and message of songs like Road Of Resistance but this is more like a call to arms and fight for your future.
This was live at PIA Arena MM 2023 Clear Night (April 2nd). The Western Kami Band was in charge both nights with Momoko Okazaki now crowned as MomoMetal and an official member.
Black Night (April 1st) was the first night and it represents the end of old BM era, you can see them with different battle dresses (more black) and this Clear night is with the new iridiscent costume.
The time has come to get this DVD/BD and enjoy these shows while we're waiting for Europe and UK Tour, a lot of news recently and more is coming next year.
Next suggestion, actually it was released just the day before this one to get a snippet of the Black Night:
    - MAYA official live at PIA Arena MM.
Totally agree with your last train of thought, BM is a whole experience, you just don't listen their songs you also need to experience them live, some said like a Broadway show, they're super professional on the stage and I'm down for it, there's no other Japanese group like them with this level of show and top notch production.
    See you next time 🦊🤘🐴

Wow, you hit the nail on the head. When you go see a musical you dont dis the singer because he didnt write the songs or play an instrument. I would never have thought about that but the analogy is so apt. The level of talent in the band is higher than almost any other band around. Kami band can stand up against any band in the world and come out ahead, Sus vocals and stage presences are god level and What other metal band has dancers. Anyone who thinks they arent metal enoough should watch death performed live on her 15th birthday when she was crucufied on stage. Watch that andthen tell me they arent metal enough. Ive seen grown men weepo at the sight of it. Its phenomenal.

You're so right - Babymetal is like a gateway drug into heavier music. I'm a big fan of The Warning, hard rock is my usual kind of music, and I found Babymetal purely because both fan bases are fanatical and my curiosity was piqued. This led me to the world of Japanese rock and metal, and now Nemophila is my most listened to band right now. There is no chance I'd have liked it without first falling in love with Babymetal. Now I'm at the point where I'm seeing Babymetal live later this month!
