He is not the Black Mozart he is his own man. Mozert was actually inspired by Bach and other composers like any musician. We learn from each other and move the culture further. This man was viewed as the best in Europe while Mozart was still trying to gain favor in his own circles. Not only was this man a great composer, he was a great athlete and war hero. He was an overachiever. His resume speaks for itself.

During my graduate studies I took an elective course on Classical Music. I learned about all periods of classical music, the orchestra instruments and all the composers. Needless to say "Chevalier" was never mentioned. Now we know about a true musical artist. There are many more talented brown skin artist that are not mentioned in history.

History of Classical music needs redoing. Napoleon not only had a complex because he was short, but he couldn't play music. Mr. St. George was probably the greatest of his contemporaries and that's why his contemporaries tried to eliminate his stupendous works. I did see the Movie and it was only a snippet of the life of this awesome human Joseph Bologne Chevalier.

Le Chevalier était sans conteste le plus talentueux le plus bel homme du royaume. il excellait en tout sa musique est extraordinaire et Mozart n a jamais voulu le rencontrer car Le Chevalier était bien avant Mozart " une véritable star " .

The classical era was definitely less complex but better to the listener than the previous polyphonic composer like Bach. Less notes more clarity. It's absolutely amazing

Edit: Ok, I became very curious about who influenced whom. This, Joesph’s first symphony, was composed in 1779. Mozart composed his first symphony at age 4 or 5 (nobody quite knows) and by 1779 had composed 33 of his 41 symphonies.

He spent much of his composing life in France. I am fond of French Baroque (e.g. Lully, Charpentier, Rameau), yet he was more akin to Germanic gallant style. Candidly, his music is somewhat simplistic, but oh, so enjoyable to listen to.

Of course this is more galant simplistic. Everything was trending that way by 1770. Baroque is more complex but already was going away by the 1720s. The French preferred there music a bit loud and boisterous, which may come off unexpected to those who have only heard then "usual Germanic speakers".

Naysayers believe that Mozart's popularity is artificially being elevated by white supremacy or proGerman sentiments......this is the dumbest idea on planet Earth. This is nice work, similar to Mozart in his last Salzburg years. It's too bad that he's subjected to not the racial, but the political prejudices of our time. No; he wasn't a martyr to white racism, as the political fashion would have it, but neither was he some stumbling mediocrity as at least one critic has charged. Rather, he's a good representative of the classical music of roughly 1775-85. I'd put him in the second level of composers of the period--not a Joseph Haydn or Mozart, but certainly on a level with Michael Haydn or Salieri--which is still awfully good. He deserves more attention than he's gotten, but it's a disservice to him and his music to try to adopt and distort his story for a political cause.

"Black Mozart" what a racist thing to say. He's Joseph Bologne.. the original period.

  • @JolPil

And yet they call him "the black Mozart" - he had his own charge, 10 years older than Mozart. But I still prefer Mozart because Mozart was a sad man, angrier, more lost, in those days in Paris, Bologne was a star in Paris when Mozart was unknown. I love that we have a black master violin composer from that time, but Mozart rules my heart. Mozart actually suffered MORE than this black warrior and composer hero in those years.

Oh shut up. Mozart was never "unknown". He was touring around Europe since he was a child. As for sadness... Bologne faced racism, & being a soldier the French Revolution. He was then thrown in jail as a suspected sympathizer or the monarchy despite having fought against them. He spent a lot of that time wondering when he would be executed.
What hardships did Mozart face besides his strict father? He in no wars, spent no time in jail, had a wife & children & afforded himself a lifestyle he could hardly afford. Mozart lived a relatively pampered existence. Read some history kid. Yes, I agree Bologne isn't even remotely in Mozart's league as a composer or musician, but Bologne lived a more difficult & experienced life.

Not you downplaying what a black man faced during that time in France 😬. Just say you’re racist and go. Plus he came BF Mozart, and now his name will be known.

You have to be incredibly stupid to actually believe what you wrote. Mozart being pampered since childhood to begin with. While this guy suffered assassination attempts MULTIPLE times and. had to live in a society that never considered him an actual human being. Knowing his mother and his kind were slaves.
You're ignorant and lack empathy for even comparing the living struggles of these two.

You obviously don't know much about this man's history if you think mozart suffered more than he did. Research his entire history and then decide who really suffered more. Yes mozart was sad so was Joseph.

While the Chevalier is his own composer and being mulatto, he should only be known for his skill as a composer. There is nothing about his skin color that contributed. His white father invested in his education. His music teachers/influences (Gossec,Leclair and Lolli) were also white. Leclair was also a legendary violinist. His musical friends, such as Haydn and Dittersdorf were white and masters of music. Those who brought his music back to attention were white. Naxos released a recording of his Concertos over 20 years ago! The label was owned by a white guy and his wife, a Japanese violinist, well, she performed on the recording.
Do you know what that all means? Nothing. These musical influences and friends translated into adding to the Chevalier being the composer he became. All composers share a similar background.
And believe it or not, many white composers have fallen through the cracks of history as well and sit in the shadows of giants such as Mozart and Beethoven.
So, enjoy this for the greatness it is and not everything is a conspiracy. There were, literally, hundreds upon hundreds of composers, most of which have been forgotten or are hardly known today. Some were even more popular than the Chevalier!
Don't politicize this or SJW this. Indulge and appreciate this. And keep in mind,.many discovering this didn't care about classical music to begin with. But if this is what it took for you to enjoy it? Well, great!

This is a bizarre comment to leave on a video that has nothing to do with race. This channel is dedicated to his MUSIC, which is evident based on the channel title and the numerous videos of...his music. Bologne's influences have been acknowledged throughout this channel. This is not knew information provided by you. Most of the blame for the loss of Bologne's music has always been the destruction during the french revolution. There are no conspiracies here. No parts of this video is politicized nor is it appropriate to bring up social justice warriors, given the content. The purpose of this channel was not only to provide a central location for his discography, but also to be attractive to the layman. I would suggest that if you don't want to hear about race that you stop being part of the problem.

You actually lauded some comments who noted his color and then tell others who note his skin color should have nothing to do with it? You need to help people understand how that isn't a contradiction?
