    I have a couple of whirlybirds on my roof that are very similiar to this brand .
    They are about 20 years old they but do not have the fan.
    I noticed one was making squeeking noises so I undid the three screws that secure the rotating section to the stationry tube.
    Note it is unnecessary to undo the single nut on end of the shaft.
    I discovered the whirlybird bearings are not designed to be removed and replaced with new bearings so I hosed the dust out of the bearngs using WD40 and gave the framework a few spins.
    The centrifigal force caused black gunk to issue from the bearings.
    I wiped the black gunk with a rag and repeated this process several times.
    Finally I applied several drops of sewing machine oil to the bearings and puffed some powdered graphite onto the oil for good measure.
    The bearings no longer squeek and the repairs cost nothing.

      My experience with whirlybirds is they reduce the temperature in the ceiling void by about 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
      This prevents excessive heat on hot days from passing through the ceiling plaster board and heating up the living area inside the house.
      Wind causes the whirly bird to spin and centrifigal force causes hot air to be flung out of the gaps between the vanes.
      This causes a reduction in air pressure within the ceiling void which becomes normalised by cooler air being drawn into the ceiling void through ventilators in the eves.

  • @ozzirt

    @nay1978miles The hot air in the roof cavity rises and the airflow actually turns the ventilator further aiding the removal of hot air. Their main benefit is that when a slight wind is blowing that would normally reduce the airflow out of a straight tube, the design of the turbine ensures a low pressure area at the top of the vent to draw away the air from within the roof cavity.
    After fitting two in my roof the air temperature up there, dropped by about 15 - 20 degrees on hot days

    Twista vents are also Australian made and are 420mm not 300mm like edmonds and other brands, the Twista vents are also much stronger as they are not build from aluminium. They have also been around for more then 15 years. Makes your Rolls Royce vent look like a cheap Datsun 120Y.
    The vents work on days without any wind as the hot air from the roof causes the vent to spin.

    • @InsulationAustralia
      @InsulationAustralia  8 лет назад +2

      +Tyson Cierpial I think you've been watching far too many television advertising blurbs. There is a reason for the domestic ventilators been made to a 300mm size...they fit in the space that a roof tile takes up, logical when you think about it! Wouldn't be very efficient to put a 400mm vent over a 300mm hole.There are of course many commercial ventilators of varying sizes to suit industrial applications. Its always very easy to be critical from the armchair!

    They should have quality bearings. Spend the extra money and mount them level to the ground not roof, use a level. Also, make sure you have plenty of eave vents to allow air in at the roof edge, no one wants the attic to suck air from inside the house, that would suck.

    John I have a camp near the opal fields of Lightning Ridge and it is a skillion roof made from 75mm polystyrene sandwich panel - no roof cavity as such. It gets very hot up here and I wondered if a ventalator would be effective in reducing heat inside without a ceiling cavity.

      Yes it would be as long as you are able to close it off for the cold winters. There is a company called Aplelite that not only make roof ventilators but a ceiling grille that can be closed off for winter.As long as there is airflow(hot air rises) you would benefit...Even in 45 degree heat! I saw industrial whirly birds on a huge shed at the local tip which were spinning very fast indeed although when i went inside the shed comunities of spiders had set up home in the throat of the vents and the webs were barely moving ?????

      +Shayne Baker interesting...maybe constant air flow doesn't move the webs?

    • @InsulationAustralia
      @InsulationAustralia  7 лет назад +2

      I can't comment on what you saw but I can say this...Over the years I've installed many ventilators and when you cut the hole in the roof or remove the roof tile hot air instantly pours out and when the ventilator is fitted even more so.
      I have no axe to grind as I am no longer self employed or working within the industry but would still recommend roof ventilators to my friends and anyone who cares about home comfort and roof health. I have seen many webs in ventilator throats over the years and they do move slightly when you are close to them...Spiders seem to like it because of the airflow through the narrow opening funnels insects their way...Clever little insects! Its not about FAST airflow...It's about airflow. How close to the webs were you Shayne? Most industrial sheds are at least 5 metres (15 feet plus) to the eaves and probably 7 to the roof apex so a little difficult to see clearly. I would suggest that if the council cleaned out the mass of webs they would get better air flow. It's just a thought :)

    I was kind of looking for an explination of how/why these work better than just putting a screened static vent, or a powered fan.

    • @InsulationAustralia
      @InsulationAustralia  8 лет назад

      +ReddmanDGZ They will exhaust far more hot air than a static vent...especially when the wind blows a little. Powered vents will aggressively exhaust hot air and can be set up with a thermostat to automatically switch on at a certain air temp. Depends on budget and whether you want a passive green vent and how much hot air you need to move.

    • @InsulationAustralia
      @InsulationAustralia  7 лет назад +2

      If the roof temperatures are very hot it may spin a little...the main thin is that is is venting hot air to the outside. If the wind blows well even better for removing hot air from your roof cavity.
