59:21......Suddenly that scene takes on a different context. It's merely a sugary filter of the horror surrounding her being oblivious to it. The kids saying "eat as much as you like" and handing them to her....the oddly larger human sized snacks, especially the last one roughly the size of Mother Carmel...the floating hearts with them in it, flying off to heaven... The sudden surge or wave of her haki, the fact none of the kids had moved, going by the present where everyone was paralyzed in either fear or horror....those kids were paralyzed, screaming for her not to eat them and were helpless to stop her.
I feel so bad for young Big Mom. She was born different from all other kids, her parents abandoned her, no one gave her genuine love, no one tried to give her a good education, all the adults in her life were trying to benefit from her in one way or another... it's so bad, man. And you can tell adult Big Mom is stuck with a very childish mind because of it. It's not a justification of her adult actions, but it's certainly an explanation.
and it continues on too, she meet yet another adult soon after the...birthday incident...who yet again wants to take advantage of her overpoweredness for his own grab at power. and yes, he did indeed witness it.
I like how John Giant is shown near the beginning of one piece and is the very first giant we see in the series, and hundreds of chapters and episodes later is when we get the explanation about him and why and how he got in the navy.
Love her backstory. It's a great exercise in one-upmanship. A back and forward between who is the bigger monster, with Big Mom coming out on top (without even knowing it)
This is why I called her tantrums Episodes. She literally has no idea what she's doing during such incidents. She doesn't even remember taking her son's lifespan.
the craziest is, imagine how she ate the first kid, and of course they will run and scream but she cant hear anything, did not even leave blood, she just gulp them all like a titan, she even ate the table and chairs hahaha
Considering what we know now, what mother caramel was doing with gathering and selling orphans, the current new group of one piece we've been introduced to with resemblance to these kids, I now believe she only ate mother caramel and the rest is a cover-up to keep these kids history and identity a secret given that they have likely been orphaned into the WG, knowing now how this new group introduced gathers individuals for their ranks! These kids resemble this new group way too much and thus we were told as readers that they were all eaten!
One of the few One Piece backstories that that doesn’t inspire sympathy for the subject. But it’s still a great one because it informs who she is and how she got that way. The tea party scene is one of the creepiest in the entire series. One thing I wish they did, though, which would have really turned it up a notch, was when they showed the closeup of Linlin’s face covered with icing, they did a smash cut to reality and revealed that the icing was in fact blood.
I wouldn’t say that I feel sorry for her because she was raised poorly to the person she is today with added help on the raise poorly in the next episode.
In my opinion Linlin's backstory is up there as one of the darkest in all of one piece. There are other backstories that are sadder or have more horrific things happen in them but Linlin's backstory is so… cynical. We start with an abandoned child adopted by the holy mother and then we end with the human trafficker and her entire orphanage being devoured by the monster she underestimated. The child she failed to raise will go on to become a tyrant who abuses her own family and rules her country with a mad iron fist. Its so dark. I cant get over how even the small detail of some giants being navy soldiers is revealed to be the result of a manipulative scheme by the world government to trick the giants into fighting for their "justice." The other dark backstories generally still have an element of hope in there somewhere. Robin still had the love of her professor, Saul, and mother to help her keep going, to believe in Saul's words that she'd find her nakama someday. But there's no hope in this story. Linlin had the bad luck to grow up surrounded by adults who didn't care about her, who only wanted to abandon her, manipulate her, exile her without explaining things, or use her for her power. Can you imagine if Linlin had been adopted by someone like Dr Kureaha instead of Carmel? Someone who would sit her down and have those serious talks with her that Alicia explained, someone who'd actually teach her self control and right from wrong? She could have been a completely different person. It doesn't excuse her horrible actions as an adult, obviously. But i think the tragedy of Big Mom is that you can see how easily she could have grown up to be a kind hearted pirate like Luffy if her life had gone better.
Big mom is such a good character to show how infantilized adults who can't control their emotions are very dangerous to have around. In Big Mom's case even more so because she's built different to the point of being nearly unstoppable for most of her life so she never had anybody to check her bs so she could grow, but I think everyone has seen the destruction people who never grow up leave in their wake.
The problem with raising Linlin was always going to be... well how do you punish an iron balloon that can kill a bear in one punch? There's no real good answer there. Even experienced adult giants couldn't do so much as pin her. You can reward good behavior, but at the end of the day if you can't punish bad behavior you'll just get someone like her that does whatever she pleases.
Fun fact: there is a shot of a child among the younger Giants here and it was the same giant the Straw Hats, but mostly Rayleigh, saved before the timeskip at Saobody.
That’s been the theory for a while on how some humans get so damn big. The admirals, Blackbeard, Whitebeard, even Hancocks sisters, Marigold and Sandersonia.
It was heart-warming listening to you talk in depth about your parenting strategies. I've heard you talk about wanting a family, but it's so much cooler and more reassuring to see that you aren't going into it blind. Or just because you like the idea. Raising a family is one of the hardest tasks a person can take, so I'm glad you're preparing so far in advance.
The only thing that doesn’t make sense to me in Big Mom’s backstory is how Big Mom never put it together that she ate Mother Carmel. She’s supposed to have the best information gathering of the Yonko. I find it hard to imagine that she doesn’t know how Devil Fruits reincarnate which makes it strange how she never questioned how she had the same power as Mother Carmel. I guess the only thing I could think of is that her children or anyone that has put it together might know and refuse to tell her out of fear or she knows deep down but repressed it due to trauma.
@@gustavocaceda8175I like to believe that option. Big Mom is still a child right now. She never accepts any of her actions, like her hunger sprees or the death of Caramel. Just like Totto Land, she wants a beautiful lie (a land of equality, Caramel is alive, etc) rather than the harsh truth.
Mother Caramel secret identity is something only known by Cipher Pol and what happened at the birthday party is something only the giants (whose relationships with her got cut hard) and Streusen know.
12:46 I love monologues like these I was wondering why it was an hour long but I’m totally here for the parenting lectures. there’s a lot of parents who should’ve heard this before having their kids…. also….. trauma
Dangers of spoiling your children. You may think making your kid happy by not scolding them is a good thing, but if they don't learn what they do wrong, they can grow into monsters that see no fault in anything they do. Also, that flashback seemed so sweet with the cake. Just having a happy day with her friends, enjoying her favorite treat....I didn't stop to think that she was enjoying it so much she also started eating literally everything around it. That is horrifying and terrible, and such a 180 turn. But at least Carmel got what she deserved
Definitely prioritize your health Alicia. As much as I look forward to your reactions I'm more than willing to wait if it means you keep yourself in good health. Also, it's never explicitly stated but Big Mom is believed to have gotten the Soul power by eating Mother Carmel which basically had the same effect as eating a devil fruit.
Trauma is one low hanging fruit for a code word... But it fits her back story at least. Prior to her bioparents leaving her behind I wonder what she did to make them be that way.
Trauma 😨 Also, as a Swede just wanna say that this 24:08 , the Semla is a very famous (forgive me o forgot the word, English isn’t my first language) snack or sweet here in the nordics but especially in Sweden during/around Easter. There’s a day in particular of you’re extra picky about traditions in which you’re supposed to eat it, I don’t know if there’s a English name for it but we call it Fettisdagen/Fettisdag. It’s super yummy, there’s all tons of variants now days but I prefer the classic.
Yeah it was long but a dope video. Your analysis on child raising and being baffled by Carmel's way made complete sense. Of course it makes even more sense when not an accident , which is a crazy twist. Us One Piece fans always try ranking trauma and tragic backstories... and we always pick specific strawhats as the ones that had it the worst... But i always found Big Mom's to be at the top (alongside Brook's) , especially when she ain't even aware herself of the manipulation, and how worse off she likely would have been, had Carmel succeeded. Of course all of those patterns born out of trauma and and childhood, don't excuse her being a POS 63 years later.. she still made some evil choices.
This is the big benefit to reaction videos: you get an insight that doesn't always come from just watching the actual show. As someone who's been openly putting a lot of effort into being a parent, you gave this flashback a fresh perspective. Anyway, happy birthday to Big Mom herself, Charlotte Linlin. Just kidding, her birthday is not for a couple more weeks, but COULD YOU IMAGINE. But no, we have to wait for tomorrow for a thematically relevant birthday (epic foreshadowing). In all seriousness, today is 26 January, so happy birthday to Kuromarimo (King Wapol's enforcer with the nasty afro) and Nero (CP9 guy who got trashed on the Sea Train). Birthdays we missed: 23 January was the birthday of Roxanne (a regular customer at Baratie) as well as three of Big Mom's children - triplets Nusstorte, Basskarte, and Dosmarche - the Minister of Transport, not a Minister, and the Minister of Tea, respectively. 24 January was the birthday of Miss Monday (buff mommy from Baroque Works) and Kairiken (bounty hunter from Sabaody). And yesterday was 25 January, birthday of Giolla, the lady with the art fruit who got annihilated by Brook in the arc where Brook got hoed.
I knew this video was going to be at least an hour long. Also don't push yourself to do these videos, One Piece fans know how to wait cause many of us watched this arc week to week.
For my money Big Mom is the most terrifying Yonko. And it's not when she goes Godzilla mode, its that she's like schizophrenic and has the power to make you live her delusions. Alicia keeps bopping to the score, while I'm freaking out that food is talking and telling you to eat it while singing.
Trauma breeds trauma incarnate. Soft touch versus soft parenting. Love the analogies and the lesson you're teaching Alicia! That excludes any extra terror that comes from her condition.
its very convenient that Caramel used a power similar to BIG MOM noh? i wonder why that is? John the Giant was at marieford when the war happened, he was the Giant that first battle WB but got wrecked immediately
No worries. I'm an end stage degenerative spinal patient. Gotta listen to your body. I'm a cosplayer and will be lucky to do one more con before I die. Health comes first.
You're gonna make a good maw. You're absolutely right, one thing people forget pretty often is that empathy and theory of mind isn't always inate; you need to guide and teach that shit. If you feel that you need to hit your kid in order to teach them something, you're admiting intellectual defeat and resorting to uncivilised and tyrannical behaviour because you can't out think a child. Take a breather, count to ten. It's pattern recognition, stay consistent and you'll have less issues. Was good to hear about the volunteering stuff, absolutely nailed that too. I have a theory about Big Mom and her mental health; I believe that she's got Prader-Willi syndrome. It's as you say though, even when these things are caused by incredibly debilitating mental illness/brain injury, there are still methods of treatment to use to reduce these issues. One problem that makes these problems worse in some children, is the presence of disorders such as autism; where the parents of autistic children often struggle with discipline not just due to the nature of the mental illness itself, but use the mental illness itself as an excuse for why they allow bad behaviour. The people with these disorders that do the best have firm and empathic parents who have plenty of patience; this often is more key than the severity of the disorder.
Everyone has a trauma Iiked Alicia's reaction at 52:47 😂😂😂 About the final scene, it's not really a spoiler, but that's where Big Mom got her devil fruit powers
One Piece has a lot of subtle commentary on mentors and parental figures. Luffy is who he is because Garp, Dadan, and of course Shanks taking an active role in shaping his understanding of the world. Rebecca was raised well by Kyros who was only himself brought out of the dregs by Riku recognizing him and helping to make him a worthy man. Doflamingo and Rosinante were obviously different but Doffy ended up being found by Trebol while Rosinante was picked up by Sengoku. Sanji and Zeff. Big Mom could have been a good person, but she was mentored by people who only wanted to exploit her strength for personal gain.
And that's one of the most grim confirmations about devil fruits: normally if you kill a devil fruit user, the power will just vanish and a new fruit will emerge somewhere, like it did with Ace. *But this confirms that if you consume a devil fruit user, the power actually transfers to the one who consumed them.*
These episodes of Big Mom's backstory are so good. It gives all the context with the giants, it sprinkles in some Hajrudin backstory and then there are the two plottwists at the end with Mother Carmel being a human trafficer and Linlin going on a feeding frenzy! Good on you though, not everyone is as fast at picking up on Big Mom going cannibalistic. Also you actually called it earlier in the reaction.
I'm glad that some people here in the comments acknowledge the genius writing of Linlin's character, because people these days all they care about is the strength of the character instead of the important element which is the writing and its emotional impact. Big Mom is hated by many for stupid and illogical reasons.
A bit of foreshadowing was when Mother Carmel used her power to make Pandora, which is the soul-soul fruit, WHICH BIG MOM GOT AFTER EATING HER. So it's confirmed that if you want someone's devil fruit power, you just have to eat them and it's transferred over.
@@matheussanthiago9685 I think it was because Blackbeard had the dark-dark fruit, so he basically melded with the darkness under the tarp they put over him and went into his body and somehow took the fruit out like that. Maybe it's just a power of the dark dark fruit because later they talk about how the Blackbeard pirates were basically buying devil fruit powers from people and taking them from others and giving them to their own people. So maybe the dark dark fruit lets Blackbeard kind of act like All For One from MHA?
This has to be the most crazy and messed up plot twist in One Piece. Linlin actually eating everyone mistaking them as Croquembouche. At least they're now together, forever and ever.
Your health has always priority Alicia, so it's a good thing you actually cut back a bit when you're feeling unwell. The community here that did go through this journey with you for that long won't just suddenly abandon you for taking care of yourself. :)
I'm glad you are prioritizing your health but after 800+ episodes, it's become like a crack addiction for these episodes, so if we get snippy, it's only because of Peak Piece withdrawals xD
oh yeh Semlas are delicious, have an entire day (Fettisdagen or The Fat Tuesday) for eating them here in Sweden next one is March the 4th so if you're in the mood you can get one then, and dw the fasting till easter is optional 😄
yeah...Everything Big Mom does is to recapture that one happiest day of her life. Including how she uses her power to bring her food to life, because on a subconscious level, she associates screaming food with that happy day.
We will be patient for your recovery…though I know the episodes you’re reacting too in this video and I cannot fathom that it won’t delay your recovery with all that codeword.
The title of the video should be "If you enable kids to get away with anything, I will talk 1 episode's worth of One Piece while stopping the reaction as punishment!" Ok jokes aside, Indeed I agree. Bad parenting only teaches bad behavior and if you don't realise what you are doing is bad for your kid's future, you will end up seeing the consequences of your actions AND inactions. Fair and Square. Also, Big Mom has the same power as Mother Carmel... Oh well! What a coincidence 😅🤫
I normally skip your intro, however I do sympathize with your TRAUMA and will include you in my prayer. Pace yourself and thank you for the content, whenever it may come.
If you watch the scene closely, you notice somthing is up right away. The semla she is eating is small enough to fit in the palms of her hands. The final few she ate were much bigger.
Big Mom was absolutely partially born to be a monster, Carmel wasn't at fault for the carnage in Elbaph. We don't get much of her parents, but they didn't seem bad and we can surmise something like her hunger pangs happened with them as well, because apparently she caused massive damage there as well. This is something she just has, it's in her nature to lose her senses with her hunger. MAYBE it could've been worked through as she grew up had she been raised right, but it's very telling even as an adult she has no recollection of her rampages.
to be fair, her condition was evidently manageable because the only time she suffered one in the flashback was during the fast, and she never violently acted out besides that. If Carmel had raised her better, had taught her that violence is bad, she wouldn't have succumbed so easily to her base impulses. Linlin has a mental problem, but it could have been managed better with proper care and attention. The fact she was able to form an organized pirate crew and worked with others before implies it isnt nearly as often a problem as people think. Plus theres the fact no one ever scolded her for her actions, making her believe that every idea she has is correct, resulted in her psychopathy today. As she is now, she is a terrible person, with or without hunger pangs. They were just the cherry on top of all the other problems her childhood created, leading to her status today.

The sudden surge or wave of her haki, the fact none of the kids had moved, going by the present where everyone was paralyzed in either fear or horror....those kids were paralyzed, screaming for her not to eat them and were helpless to stop her.
haki paralyzing
... that's how that scene made sense
I think alica is hacked oop :(

🧀 If there is any moment you would like to see on this list comment its episode number below.
🧀 I would appreciate it if you could give me a spoiler free hint on what moment you mean
Damn, she's collecting hackers like Pokemon-
the craziest is, imagine how she ate the first kid, and of course they will run and scream but she cant hear anything, did not even leave blood, she just gulp them all like a titan, she even ate the table and chairs hahaha
It you watch closely some of the Semla in the scene is larger then the rest right after showing one of the kids telling her to eat
These kids resemble this new group way too much and thus we were told as readers that they were all eaten!
oda: how do i make this character truly terrifying..... cannibalism
but wait it gets worse: ACCIDENTAL INFANTILE cannibalism
I cant get over how even the small detail of some giants being navy soldiers is revealed to be the result of a manipulative scheme by the world government to trick the giants into fighting for their "justice."
The other dark backstories generally still have an element of hope in there somewhere.
You can reward good behavior, but at the end of the day if you can't punish bad behavior you'll just get someone like her that does whatever she pleases.
the rants about mother caramel were all worth it for that double knockout twist.
trauma!
especially after all the rants about Pudding! She never saw it coming lol.
Fun fact: there is a shot of a child among the younger Giants here and it was the same giant the Straw Hats, but mostly Rayleigh, saved before the timeskip at Saobody.
Trauma, thy name is Big Mom. I will say, there's a theory that she, as well as humans in general, have a lineage back to the giants like Oars.
That’s been the theory for a while on how some humans get so damn big. The admirals, Blackbeard, Whitebeard, even Hancocks sisters, Marigold and Sandersonia.
@gavin5724 And it's gaining more momentum with the recent chapters.
The trauma and bad parenting distracted you from sus'ing out the bad intentions this time around.
It never gets old seeing the chat freak out ahead of incoming trauma while you are understandably oblivious. Perfect juxtaposition.
Honestly i don't think even if the giants wanted they could kill Linlin. She was just a monster and nobody knew how strong she was.
In a way, it's kinda darkly comical just how much of a monster Linlin is, even with how tragic it is.
yup, Linlin is classic case of sympathy for the monster
I find it amusing that Alicia's trust issues disappear the moment she comes across a mother figure
59:23 Tears blurred her eyes. 💀
Yep, that was the problem
Don't worry Linlin if you miss your friends and mother Caramel, just look inside your heart..., and if you don't see them there check your stomach.
Linlin’s backstory is great, sets up Elbaph well
In the words of Sam O' Nella: "She's really just psychotically hungry."
Also entirely possible she figured it out later on and is just in constant denial.
It's hard to make someone understand something when what's left of his sanity depends on them not understanding it.
Mother Caramel secret identity is something only known by Cipher Pol and what happened at the birthday party is something only the giants (whose relationships with her got cut hard) and Streusen know.
Yeah, definitely repressing it
12:46 I love monologues like these I was wondering why it was an hour long but I’m totally here for the parenting lectures. there’s a lot of parents who should’ve heard this before having their kids…. also….. trauma
Don't worry Alicia, your health and life are more important than reactions
Dangers of spoiling your children. You may think making your kid happy by not scolding them is a good thing, but if they don't learn what they do wrong, they can grow into monsters that see no fault in anything they do. Also, that flashback seemed so sweet with the cake. Just having a happy day with her friends, enjoying her favorite treat....I didn't stop to think that she was enjoying it so much she also started eating literally everything around it. That is horrifying and terrible, and such a 180 turn. But at least Carmel got what she deserved
You're youtube got hacked.?? 😢
Saw the livestream and didn't realize the recording was more than an hour, that's just how you know you're watching a peak arc
Alicia- "Just look inside of you Linlin they're there"
Me- "Not if she already weent to the toilet thei're not :D "
Alicia be parenting the adults in her family as much as she's parenting the kids 😂
Trauma is one low hanging fruit for a code word...
But it fits her back story at least.
Prior to her bioparents leaving her behind I wonder what she did to make them be that way.
Mother Carmel is using the wrong parenting techniques, for sure.
I think youve been hacked, your channels streaming bitcoin stuff. Hope you are alright
And here we have one of the darkest backstories in all of One Piece cause holy shit she ate them.
Funny thing is, I didn’t even get it the first time. Maybe my naive self didn’t believe One Piece could go THAT dark.
Talk about Trauma.
Never challenge Oda with a "they wouldn't do THAT". The dude will say "Bet" every time.
Did alicia get hacked again??
Got hacked again 🥲🥲🥲
Noooooo
Knew this flashback would bring up some good how-to-raise-a-child talk. Good video.
For my money Big Mom is the most terrifying Yonko. And it's not when she goes Godzilla mode, its that she's like schizophrenic and has the power to make you live her delusions. Alicia keeps bopping to the score, while I'm freaking out that food is talking and telling you to eat it while singing.
The length of this episode is exactly why I watch Alicia for reactions, over others.
You know you getting enough commentary content out of it.
OMG I was wondering what your reaction to cannibal Linlin would be, I wasn't disappointed.
You have NO IDEA how fitting you seeing this backstory is to where the manga is
Trust and believe, my queen we'll still be here. Health comes first
Please don't stress about posting your health comes first praying for your full recovery take as much time as you need
Elbaf really be out here being like “Praise the Sun!” 🤗🌞
Everyone has a trauma
Iiked Alicia's reaction at 52:47
😂😂😂
About the final scene,
it's not really a spoiler, but that's where Big Mom got her devil fruit powers
🚨Hacked!!🚨
Makes me wonder what happens if someone or something ate 2 devil fruit users
These episodes of Big Mom's backstory are so good.
It gives all the context with the giants, it sprinkles in some Hajrudin backstory and then there are the two plottwists at the end with Mother Carmel being a human trafficer and Linlin going on a feeding frenzy!
Good on you though, not everyone is as fast at picking up on Big Mom going cannibalistic. Also you actually called it earlier in the reaction.
Why I love One Piece. So many of the villains have these what if scenarios that go through your mind.
I'm glad that some people here in the comments acknowledge the genius writing of Linlin's character, because people these days all they care about is the strength of the character instead of the important element which is the writing and its emotional impact. Big Mom is hated by many for stupid and illogical reasons.
Oh god not again with the crypto stuff 😭😭😭 please
A bit of foreshadowing was when Mother Carmel used her power to make Pandora, which is the soul-soul fruit, WHICH BIG MOM GOT AFTER EATING HER. So it's confirmed that if you want someone's devil fruit power, you just have to eat them and it's transferred over.
which begs the question
what part of White Beard did Black Beard ate?
I really hope that you feel better soon and that your fight with cancer ends with you winning, sending positive vibes.
Always ALWAYS prioritize your health, we can wait for reactions! I'm wishing you the best, we're all rooting for you, Alicia!
Your health has always priority Alicia, so it's a good thing you actually cut back a bit when you're feeling unwell. The community here that did go through this journey with you for that long won't just suddenly abandon you for taking care of yourself. :)
I'm glad you are prioritizing your health but after 800+ episodes, it's become like a crack addiction for these episodes, so if we get snippy, it's only because of Peak Piece withdrawals xD
oh yeh Semlas are delicious, have an entire day (Fettisdagen or The Fat Tuesday) for eating them here in Sweden
next one is March the 4th so if you're in the mood you can get one then, and dw the fasting till easter is optional 😄
Its just crazy that Big Mom never ate a Devil Fruit. It was Carmel all along!
DAMN, my timing is impeccable, I'm super early
yeah...Everything Big Mom does is to recapture that one happiest day of her life. Including how she uses her power to bring her food to life, because on a subconscious level, she associates screaming food with that happy day.
We really spent like 20 minutes on early childhood development only to realize Mother Caramel wasnt rasinging Lin Lin badly on accident
We will be patient for your recovery…though I know the episodes you’re reacting too in this video and I cannot fathom that it won’t delay your recovery with all that codeword.
43:50 You are describing the The logical jigsaw uses with his death traps.
Flashback Lin Lin reminds me of Lenny from of mice and men.
The title of the video should be "If you enable kids to get away with anything, I will talk 1 episode's worth of One Piece while stopping the reaction as punishment!"
Ok jokes aside, Indeed I agree.
"Look inside yourself, Lin-Lin, they are with you..."
For at least another 8-12 hours to digest and she has to hit the potty...
Alicia has more parenting skills than actual parents. Such a W
And now linlin has the same devil fruit...
