I understand where Eli is coming from but for one, rejection is one thing, not at least sending out a message to a person you INTERVIEWED, is another thing. It is simply rude and inconsiderate. A person takes time out of his or her life to do an interview. This person will never get that time back; it is gone forever. Giving the person a simple heads up at least allows the person some closure and the wherewithal to move on. Second, if your car is about to be repossessed, your rent is overdue and the other bills are mounting, rejection does become personal. Many of us cannot afford being rejected a thousand times; we have families to support and bills to pay. Being one step away from becoming a beggar or becoming one is quite personal. Lastly, as alluded to by Eli himself, competing with dozens if not hundreds of others for a job tends to foster an atmosphere filled with tension and apprehension. While the systems hails this as the best of all worlds, in actuality it is a world that benefits the few and moreover, combined with the gamut of other social pressures and fissures (i.e. corrupt institutions, a two-party duopoly, cultural decay, non-nonsensical media and so on) this 'me first and let the devil take the hindmost mindset' is a key factor in the growing levels of alienation and anomie amongst the population. Some of whom, with disturbing regularity, lash out with deadly effects. There's gotta be a better way to live.

As someone who has had many jobs and never not gotten the job if I applied for it, I find this video not 100% accurate. Sometimes if you apply yourself and you talk confidently, people will see that. I'm sure my experience isn't part of the norm, but just know sometimes after you fail so many times you may need to rethink your approach.

Eli, first thanks again for the meetup in Wheat Ridge, CO. I must admit this video in particular really got me thinking about my new IT consulting business. I am in the process of getting general liability insurance but I appreciated what you said about rejection and how to handle it and especially in my case, with owning my own business. By the way, the video about punctuality was really good because this drives me insane as well and I get sick and damn tired of people who don't respect other people's time (my time in particular). Way to call it!
Great topic. It's part of life and we ALL have to go through it in our personal and business lives. And I love the beginning part about giving up. In general, people give up wayyyy to easy on everything. Like you said, you have to keep pushing forward.
tidbit of insight Just knowing basic IT and computing makes you valuable to a sea of people who use /need computer but don't know how to use and troubleshoot them. I've spent the summer working with an electrician fixing simple things around peoples homes and what i've see are homeowner who see electricity as magic. They will hand you ridiculous amounts of money to do very simple repairs because to them its not simple at all.
Yup, the last time I got rejected, I actually asked the HR guy what I need to do to get better at this. He was seriously surprised, I was the first in his long career that had ever asked this after a rejection. It's business, never personal. How can it? The guy doesn't know you safe what you put in that resume.
I don't take rejection harshly at all anymore. If you don't even get into an interview, modify your CV and your letter to the company. If you make it to the interview then often getting hired is circumstantial: You aren't a cultural fit, you lack a certain skill that someone else has (could be a single thing) etc. You could get hired to the same company, but on a different time. Be confident, go there to represent YOURSELF and don't sweat what the company requires you to be (as long as you choose within your scope... just don't take pressure on pleasing the interviewer)
Pretty much what i've done. If I get rejection I may send HR if they are involved an email just ask if there was anything they thought I should do different, or they desired something I didn't have or notice was a desire. Almost always I hear you did good, but this other person had a bit more experience and at this type we wanted someone to come in quickly. A few times through peers I'd find out where the person was hired from then I may see if that is making openings there. One case was a place I interned at job came up I went through all the steps, got rejection. My friend knew the person they hired was like oh they gave him answers to a test, he couldn't have passed otherwise. I trust my friend, and as much as that ticked me off I just said okay is this a place I want to work, is my friend right?, maybe he'll be fired in a year. I don't think I ever even sent them an email since I knew sort of what they wanted, etc. I said I don't care what happened I'm not going to give them crap I respect everyone in the department, maybe this was something forced on them by their boss. I ran into the admin and the tech now co-admin at a training event. The co-admin mentioned how busy they are said there's been talk of bringing me on the team. Had I started giving them crap they'd be like forget it we will never deal with him again. Not to mention small town and this admin knows probably like 10 others things could get nasty fast. Would I work for them after what they did? sure 1. I can't verify that rumor is true 2. If they want to give me a chance I think I can forgive. 3. I admire the admin there, many other places the admins are arrogant and not real pleasant to deal with.
If I'm not too timid, I do the same thing (follow up on why I've been rejected.) ... I actually did this with a credit card company. I fit within the posted guidelines, and got a generic rejection letter. So I looked up their numbers, found the one to bipass customer service, and had the guy on the other end look up the reason. "You don't have six months of credit on file. You could probably get a card from your bank." And so, I went and got a shitty department store card, built up credit for a year, and just recently got a much better card than they were offering.
Eli, I understand that I will get rejected numerous times before I can close the sale, but I will still side with Ayn Rand on this one in the sense that "Failure is not a mortgage on success." I've seen people get a job right off the bat with no issues and others apply for hundreds of jobs just to get rejected hundreds of times. There doesn't seem to be any kind of rhyme or reason and shit just happens.

Thanks for good advice. I am currently in a rut, I'm steadily studying for certs to make myself more marketable. I am in the process of maxing out my credit cards by taking courses and the cert exams. With that in mind, THANK YOU for posting your IT knowledge for free. FYI; in the last year, I have had 60+ first interviews, about 30 2nd interviews, and 10 3rd interview but... I feel the frustration but too stubborn to quit. P.S. Some employers don't even take your call when trying to follow up on an interview. P.P.S. The real assholes are the employment agencies that say that they are on your side but never call back after they take your personal information, also never responding to emails or calls.

I am going to use some of your advice to see why I am not getting the job, and think about applying else where at the same time so I can keep moving ahead. But what then if they offer a job (in a unofficial way) and ask you to give them time and after 3 months the say "thanks but no thanks!" because they are confronting "budget problems". :(
As far as these show gigs that call you then drop you, you might consider hiring an agent to deal with them on a per cost basis. Also, you might consider demanding 1/3 up front non-refundable. If they really think you are as awesome as they keep telling you you are, they will pay. Might give them some incentive too.
There is a problem with asking why you're being rejected. Because it's so easy to not do a face to face. Many places will say over the phone they you look great, but never contact you again. I've also seen it where companies will even flat out not answer when you ask why you're being rejected or even fired (if you get fired). Then again, this could be my area, and the companies I've applied to. (I've also found some companies don't tell you this because of legal reasons. I was fired once because I'm white (they fired every white person, and kept all the black people). I also didn't get a job once not because what I didn't know, but because of my age.)
I like the black list story. Sounds like I am probably on more black lists then I even knew I was on. I remember being told once, "You'll never work in this industry again !!!". That was about 20 jobs ago, and from my prospective, those words just ended up as words without actions. Sometimes people let their emotions get the best of them. Hard to see in advance, but I ended up doing better without that job.
the worst for me is applying for a job and then getting no reply at all no rejection nothing it just leaves me thinking was there any point in applying? because i was just looking for a summer job before returning to university but it still bugs me

There is something you forgot to cover, how about the feelings someone gets when they are let go from a Job/Contract or whatever and the former employer refuses to tell you why they let you go! I want to know why I was let go, If the problem was me, I can't fix the problem if I don't what is!

If there are so many more IT employees than IT jobs is this a good industry to go into? Times seem to be better all my non IT friends and family members are employed and making money. All I see are rejected unemployed IT people.
Are certification useful? I mean, are they something not THAT important, but that you still need to have? Also, I dont hav experience in jobs, still studying, but from what I've read (I like to read about social sciences and psychology) it looks like a big part of getting a job is being able to "sell" yourself, or even better, be able to show your value without sounding too needy. Of course you gotta have dem qualifications. People with experience, am I correct in my assumption?

You or someone needs to do people relations for geeks. I have found that there are some REALLY smart geeks who can't relate to humans! I could say so much about this subject. It is almost like the personality type that makes one a good geek, also makes you somewhat anti social. But bottom line, humans write paychecks! If you can't get along with humans, you are going to starve!
I applied to around 300 jobs and was averaging about 1-2 interviews (phone) a week. After a few months, I found my dream career.

im not even in college. i was already working at one tech shop, but got fired because i was late always being at my gfs house. wat do now?

I like the black list story. Sounds like I am probably on more black lists then I even knew I was on. I remember being told once, "You'll never work in this industry again !!!". That was about 20 jobs ago, and from my prospective, those words just ended up as words without actions. Sometimes people let their emotions get the best of them. Hard to see in advance, but I ended up doing better without that job.
the worst for me is applying for a job and then getting no reply at all no rejection nothing it just leaves me thinking was there any point in applying? because i was just looking for a summer job before returning to university but it still bugs me

There is something you forgot to cover, how about the feelings someone gets when they are let go from a Job/Contract or whatever and the former employer refuses to tell you why they let you go! I want to know why I was let go, If the problem was me, I can't fix the problem if I don't what is!

If there are so many more IT employees than IT jobs is this a good industry to go into? Times seem to be better all my non IT friends and family members are employed and making money. All I see are rejected unemployed IT people.

Are certification useful? I mean, are they something not THAT important, but that you still need to have?
Also, I dont hav experience in jobs, still studying, but from what I've read (I like to read about social sciences and psychology) it looks like a big part of getting a job is being able to "sell" yourself, or even better, be able to show your value without sounding too needy. Of course you gotta have dem qualifications.

***** You said it. Certs really don't mean anything and never will. The question is whether you can perform the job function or not. Unfortunately though, employers do want to see them on a resume.

You or someone needs to do people relations for geeks. I have found that there are some REALLY smart geeks who can't relate to humans! I could say so much about this subject. It is almost like the personality type that makes one a good geek, also makes you somewhat anti social. But bottom line, humans write paychecks! If you can't get along with humans, you are going to starve!
