Long time subscriber and I really enjoy taking a few minutes everyday to check out your updates. Recently I set up my own web design limited company here in Ireland after years of doing it as a hobby. At the moment it is still a hobby as I currently have a 9-5 business as an I.T specialist. The topics and points you bring up in this discussion are extremely relevant including the need to experiment and identify a need for a service ( affordable web design that is of a high quality and at a price point small business can afford) and the buzz around setting up a new startup. True that. The biggest thing I can say though is he has the experience. Just go back to Eli's earliest videos and you can see how much the channel and the videos have transitioned. Also, when you look at a lot of videos in the same category (I'm including SEO help videos) he just trumps a lot out there. And the best yet is it's free, no shows and no ebook scam or anything. Having worked in web development and video design, ideas are progressively enhanced. We have to push through and develop as we go along. The idea of taking your work as a hobby first is great. I did the same myself, took away a lot of pressure and it gave a lot of experience. If it wasn't for doing it that way, I'd be behind a till in some shop somewhere. But the big thing, like you say, is his honesty. There's no bull just get the job done. If it didn't work then reassess and change. Again, progressive enhancement.
+Dark W. Start in a computer store, even if you can't get into the tech bay straight up. You'll get lots of hands on fixing computers until you know them inside out. Then you can move on to servers, etc. in a few years but I'm with you, I'm a hardware guy. Learn about virtualization though and start getting familiar with Linux, as much as you'll hate it at first.

Most said no insurance was needed, there's nothing to insure, just twenty people or so meeting in a conference room. One agent mentioned "Event insurance, " which is about $500.00 for the day. One told me to just buy a regular small business insurance (even though I was just working from the house and then giving seminars at hotel conference rooms) and that would cover any events/seminars that I do as "trade shows." She said that is what she does for her insurance business.

Love your video's - You make a great point about solving a problem 1000's of times. The first time you build your first custom pc for a customer is great! But the resulting 200 phone calls about how his computer has no internet because he choose Hughes Net and has used up all his data. ...... .. But its your fault cause you built the computer. --- People don't realize these issues. If you clean up a virus and 3 months later their hard drive crashes and you spend 3 hours explain how its not your fault they don't care. I find analogies work great! If you go have your oil changed and 3 months later you get a flat tire is it the fault of the oil change shop that your tire is flat?
Explaining the actual facts of the situation is much more helpful than accepting fault falsely, dumb it down so they can understand. I go through this damn near every day, u can't just keep not defending yourself, explain what the fuck is going on! If the customer actually cares they will be much more appreciative.

It would not be hard to do PC repair/restoration in your garage, advertise for free on the book of faces, or other such site. Bring it over, I will blow it out, tell you all about it, test/trouble shoot all the parts, Install an appropriate OS, clean it up, maybe sell you some fans You will see a lot of proprietaries, you will see a lot of stupid. Blowing it out, telling you about it, and seeing if it works is free. This is a pretty simple feat. Then just have simple pricing brackets for what you do It will be critical to have a repository of known good parts for most things for testing. Enter the world of PC reclamation
I know this is exactly off topic but I have become impatient for a answer to a question. So I just watched the Introduction to severs video and was curious about something I have planned. I want to host a gaming server. Yes like hosting FPS shooters. You know, something graphically intensive, CPU intensive. In a sense, the same thing as Xbox live for a better lack of an example. I know Eli has said most servers are over kill. I want to know if what hardware would I be looking for to accomplish this. I'm unclear on do I need a Rig just as powerful as mine to dedicate host or can I use just some old tower I got with a low end GPU and CPU. As I look more into, im hearing I will need a computer thats beefy like my gaming computer. I plan to host a server that can smoothly or ideally host up to 300 players and do this at 60 fps with high settings. Idk if there are any gamers here but I play on servers that host 100 players and as it fills up, the performance drops dramatically. Anyway, Ill end it there. You opinions, thank you.

This game eats every bit of CPU power you throw at it and to host 300 people seems insane but im sure it's doable and im 100% comfortable with dialing down the host number to 200 or even ~100. My main concern is being able to host the game at a steady performance so if other players with beefy rigs who connect to the server wish to play at High or Ultra settings, they can do so. I have never setup an Arma server myself and so am probably not the best person to answer this (try posting in an arma forum or subreddit?). But as long as you have a good cpu and fast bandwidth you should be able to host a decent amount of players.
You're describing a business, not a hobby. I always thought of hobbies as just something you do for enjoyment, not money. But, maybe that's just me. ;)
+zon3ful True and that's a risk in a way, but on the other hand you have the chance/possibility of turning a job which at a base level you actually enjoy into a profitable enough thing to stop your other job that may be less satisfying to do. It'll really come down to the person if its a good idea or not, for starters there's a big chance you'll have to be self employed to make many a thing work or manage employees if you expand it. Not everybody is able to handle that, either that our outsource it to an expert but that would then be an additional expense.

Ronald Kelly return 0 is used so your program won't return any value therefore successfully compiling your code. You don't have to use it, I tried with and without return 0 and it still worked. I use the g++ compiler with Linux. Yes thats how they teach you to use it in the days when compilers needed it but now with improved compilers return 0 can be omitted. Try it out by omitting return 0 and you'll see what i mean.

Keep in mind though that if you use the main() function you don't need to explicitly state return 0 it automatically picks it up, but with other functions you do need it so yes you are correct to use return 0, i just chose not to since i used the main() function and i know that it executes it automatically

since the server is only sending data and not rendering anything a decent cpu and a cheap gpu would be fine.
