Now to be fair to Trump, a sizeable portion of his deficit was from necessary aid packages due to COVID. So, I can give him a pass on that. But that $800 billion he added to the deficit b/c of his corporate tax cuts was pre-COVID and extremely unnecessary.
Bill goes conservative sometimes because he is smart enough to not reject things that make sense to him when he sees and hears it and not hew to some party line just because "that's the party I'm in". The polarization of the left and right, conservative and liberal, Republican and Democratic is NOT an accurate representation of America as a whole. Most of us pick and choose at the buffet of options out there in the political spectrum to suit what values we were raised with and how we perceive cause and effect over our lives. We need to wake up to the fact that a two party system provides too few options and is not representative of how people think. Most, if not all, other representative governments around the world have more than two parties for a reason. The media loves the two party system because they continually play us off, one side against the other, because it makes the ratings go up and gives them something to talk about in the 24 hour news cycle. They couldn't do that if there were, say, five parties. Imagine if all of us Republican and Democratic party identifiers registered as Independents. Then nothing and no one is in the bag and they'd both have to present reasoned arguments to get enough votes to govern. And if their arguments were weak we'd just vote issue by issue instead of the party line. Now that would be something to see!

The dilemma of the budget is that you have conservatives, who do not just want to not raise taxes, but even further lower it and the left, who wants to raise taxes, and throw out money like there is no tomorrow. In Germany you have conservatives, who do not just talk about balancing the budget, but actually do. During the recession in 08 and 09 Germany went deep into dept, going from 60% to 70% debt relative to GDP. But in the 2010s Germany payed back debt and increased economically and sat at 60% debt before the pandemic hit. This is how it should be, a country goes in dept when money is dearly needed and either outgrows or pays back its debt, when the boom comes.

The dilemma of the budget is that you have conservatives, who do not just want to not raise taxes, but even further lower it and the left, who wants to raise taxes, and throw out money like there is no tomorrow.
In Germany you have conservatives, who do not just talk about balancing the budget, but actually do.
During the recession in 08 and 09 Germany went deep into dept, going from 60% to 70% debt relative to GDP.
But in the 2010s Germany payed back debt and increased economically and sat at 60% debt before the pandemic hit.
This is how it should be, a country goes in dept when money is dearly needed and either outgrows or pays back its debt, when the boom comes.
