    I do enjoy it when people who are grounded skeptics do mystical things for reasons that do not require them to accept mysticism. It reminds me of my wife's birth coach. Her office looked like the kind of place where you'd find crystals and buy snake oil. But everything she did was well grounded and carefully explained and held up when I checked legit sources. It was mostly relaxation, exercise and nutrition, but a few other things thrown in as well. Really helped us get psychologically ready. (And by us, I mostly mean my wife, I got a few tips, but it was obviously her show.)

    • @bonolio
      @bonolio 7 месяцев назад +66

      We skeptics get very tied up in the mechanistic universe we live in needing to follow all the appropriate rules of rationale, logic and science, and to just make sense.
      But we forget (or don't realise) that we as thinking beings exist to two very distinct and intertwined realities.
      One, the physical universe is decribed and understood by solid rules and formulae, and the other is the world of our minds, which while based in the mechanistic universe, is so complex and abstracted from the atoms that make it up that we instead are better understanding it via basic building block of ideas, metaphors, and stories.
      One reality is not separate from the other, but we cannot under stand the world we exist in by relying on one or the other.
      Is magic real in the solid universe? Probably not in any way that makes sense to my rational engineer brain.
      Is magic real in the universe of the mind? I think it can have greast value in navagating this universe as a tool built on metaphor, imagination, narrative and hope.
      The secret in to always see the world through both lens and understand which tools are best suited to each situation.

      @@bonolioGiven the quote that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, I think that when we sometimes happen upon methods that seem to reliably do nice things for us despite not understanding any of how it works, that is the closest thing to real magic.

    • @JeredtheShy
      @JeredtheShy 7 месяцев назад +19

      Human beings are irrational animals, and while we've honestly managed to be quite rational more often than not, we were sculpted by an evolution that didn't mind sloppy wiring if it got the job done, so it makes sense that sometimes we are better off hanging some little pendants on the sloppy wiring if it feels right. The problem with the placebo effect is that it works. So rational people can have a little placebo now and then, as a treat. Call it "art" so you don't have to explain it.

    Hi Vihart - I've been waiting for a new video from you for a long time so I could say this, I hope you see it lol. When I was a 7-ish year old kid, a bit lonely in my thoughts and homeschooled, and I was on Khan Academy, you were my absolute favourite part of the whole thing. Your voice was so soothing and made maths, a subject I found extremely difficult to wrap my head around, extremely interesting and full of patterns I hadn't noticed before :D I forgot about your channel after I left Khan Academy, but I recently rediscovered it and the amount of nostalgia and joy it brought me to hear your voice explaining things again was amazing lol. Suffice it to say, thank you for your influence on little me, and for making maths more bearable :) I'm nearing 18 now, and I'll forever be grateful!!

    I remember reading in the (introduction? afterword?) to The Slow Regard of Silent Things, by Patrick Rothfuss, that he showed it to his good friend Vihart saying, "this is too weird, right?" And that she told him fiercely that she loved it, that it felt like it was for her, and essentially that anyone who thought it was too weird could deal because some of us need this. And, watching this, it just makes such perfect sense how the person who loved that story also made this video, and vice versa.
    Vihart, you're inspiring me to be more contemplative and weird. You've reminded me of the lonely child who gathered tiny treasures on the playground, forming such intense emotional attachments to some of them that I still cling to them today as a grad student of nearly-thirty. And what a joy to know that the fruits of solitude and particularity can expand with such warmth and sweetness to grow in the hearts of others.

    Love this! I just watched a video of 10 magical misconceptions by Foolish Fish and one of the points was "Magic is not provable by someone else." It really takes an individual to put in the work of actually practicing magic to see the obscure and indefinable ways it will shape your life. Thank you for sharing moon spoon!

    I am simultaneously quite surprised, completely unsurprised, and absolutely delighted that you, a math youtuber with a chaotic online persona, also dabbles in modern-day magic/witchcraft practices. I love how the whole video is based on the fact that magic doesn't have to be powered by the supernatural in order to be a valid thing to do.

    I've spent the last four or so years trying to read The slow regard of silent things, It's the sort of thing that I want to love and feel like I should be able to but I have yet to finish it as every time I try I fall so far into day dreaming that I can make no progress in a book a quarter of the length of it's predacessors. This fact made me immensly frustrating for a long time until I unexpectedly found a story about you tucked into the hiding edges of the book, It made me realize that the right way to enjoy something is the way that you feel is right. For the magic, the moon spoons and an obvious fondness for dreaming, I thank you.

      have you listened to the audiobook? there's intentional iambic hexameter, Rothfuss reads it, and it's clear how much he loves words.
      speaking of, I should listen to it again.

    • @2portal19
      @2portal19 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@MorganBondelid I'll admit that sounds like I would certainly finish the book then, but I think that the audio book lacks the things that I want to put into the book, the places in which I take a break to think of little things I prefer to be self curated so that in whatever little way the experience feels like mine.

    I also loved your take on moon water. The comparison to champagne is a really clever way to make the idea that many distinctions that humans make are only as real as the individuals participating are willing to make them more accessible to the more sceptic crowd. I myself am still on the manual stage of dismantling my judgemental thoughts on these subjects, and I'm going to keep champagne in mind whenever these thoughts rear their heads. Really lovely video.

    THIS VIDEO, OMG. I feel more often sometimes that some people can't humor something without at least trying to be 100% straight-edged and factual, and I can kind of understand why given how the internet's turned out, but it really makes me wish I could earnestly explore my imagination. Like, yes I am getting an AS in Mathematics, and I also know about tarot, and I know about astrology past the Sun sign readings. That isn't a contradiction, and I wish it wasn't treated like one, because I don't have to filter everything I do through total rationality to find meaning in the things I do. I wish upon the moon spoon to scoop fortune upon my window sill, and I will leave it in view of the street lamp where the Luna Moth alights in August.
    Edit: So I actually made a moon spoon and it's been really fun to try this out. I feel the need to ask, did you purposefully upload this close to a full moon? Because there's conveniently a lot of moon to scoop tonight...
