    Ambiguity of a question + poor communication in reply = internet argument.
    If we fold a square in half, there are 2 halves. Fold again, 4 halves. Fold again, 8 halves. Punch a hole through that 3x-halved triangle, open, and your flake will have 8 holes.
    If your 3x-halved triangle is snipped at its 90° corner, it will give four shapes when unfolded. Same with _one_ of the acute corners. But snipping the acute corner which has the last fold will produce 1 hole in the center of the flake.
    So 8,4,3,2, or 1 are all correct answers, from certain perspectives. We have to first clearly state our question, and then agree on precise definitions for our terms- at least before we can have any sort of sensible argument.
    If the argument is whether or not this flake has 4-fold radial symmetry, it would be useful to first remind 8-advocates that the term, _symmetry,_ already implies two halves; thus, 8 things, but 4 reflections. 3 folds, 1 hole, and there are only ever 2 halves to anything (3 halves are 1.5 things; not singular). Let's not think about rotational translations at the moment ;)
    Great vid.

      Dixo Yep. Watch everything after 3:31 again. She's clearly talking about people who believe a certain thing about the world and apply that thinking to the rest of the world without ever checking for facts and refusing to listen to the people with actual experience. The kind of people who double down on their assertions as soon as they get suspicions that they might be wrong because they can't handle being wrong. At that point getting the other person to stop arguing becomes more important than actually winning the argument through factual evidence. The fact that she used snowflakes to make that point is just genius, since "snowflake" is something right wing fanatics often times call people who oppose their views, while simultaniously engaging in this exact type of behaviour.

  • @bandana_girl6507

    The thing with the 2x2x2 folds thing is that you do get 8 symmetric sections, but they only meet on 4 lines of each type (you technically get 8 meetings, like with your first one the loops and the points). We see it as 4 because we see the individual half shapes as whole shapes. If you punched a design in each of these sections, you'd see it easier... and it'd be helpful to have them centered and symmetric (as adjacent ones are mirrored)... which is easy to do by folding it in half again.

  • @jeremyshaferorigami
    @jeremyshaferorigami 6 лет назад +61

    When you fold a paper in half, it makes one-fold symmetry because it's clearly one fold! But if you think about it radially (as at least I often do when making snowflakes), there are two rays of symmetry. Anybody else with me on that?

    Saying 2x2x2=8 proves that 3 half folds makes 8 lines of symmetry is as logical as saying 2+2+2=6 so 3 half folds gives us 6 lines of symmetry. Both are equally wrong while both can be considered right by any fool.
    Think about it this way: if you fold a peice of paper in half Once it has one fold of symetry despite having 2 symetrical sections
    Fold it in half Twice and it has 2 folds of symmetry despite having 4 symetrical sections
    Fold it in half Three times and it has 4 fold of symetry despite having 8 symetrical sections
    So yes, 2x2x2 (or shall we say 2 to the 3rd power) is 8 but the fold of symmetry are actually 2 to the (n-1) power where "n" is replaced by the number of folds because 3 folds does not give you 2 to the 3rd power of symetry - it gives you 2 to the 2nd power lines of symmetry. Similarily 4 folds gives you 2 to the 3rd and 5 fold gives you 2 to the 4th.

      ... if you did 2x2 it equals 4 and if you did 2x4 it would equal 8 so imagine it like this (2x2=4)x2 = 8

    • @RB-kr6jo
      @RB-kr6jo 6 лет назад +1

      it also depends on the symmetry of your cuts, if you make symmetric cuts along each edge it can have 8 fold symmetry after a total of 3 folds starting from 1. Each cut you make to an edge affects 2 adjacent edges. So any fold symmetry is lost to only if edges from the centre are unevenly cut, in which case you get the 2same 2 different pattern cutting your symmetries in half = 4 fold snowflake.

    Guys, if you make these, turn them back into a strip and coat them in clear packing tape. Then put them back together. They'll be sturdier and easier to flex that way.

    • @crapizio
      @crapizio 5 лет назад +5

      Makes a very sturdy 'windowed' version if taped/laminated AFTER cutting (which I think is what you are talking about), or you can tape/laminate BEFORE cutting to have sturdier but completely open patterns (or maybe just for a bit of shine).
      I'd like to see a flake (flexy or otherwise) made out of a transparent sheet. One step more realistic.

    A 2x2x2 snowflake does have 8 symmetries, just 4 of those symmetries are rotational and the other 4 are reflectional. A rhombus symmetry group can be formed by folding twice and cutting. It has 180 and 360 rotational symmetry and 2 axis of reflectional symmetry.

    • @elliwesishawkins4799
      @elliwesishawkins4799 6 лет назад +1

      Donald Hobson this is better than my theory that the lines os symmetry when folded in half is 2^(n-1) where n is the number of folds.

    • @AdasbaGamingChannel
      @AdasbaGamingChannel 6 лет назад +3

      In the video, "four fold symmetry" was used, key word there being fold. I'm not an expert on this topic at all, but does "fold" mean only reflectional symmetry applies, or does the rotational symmetry apply too?

    • @user-ph5wf5ko6x

      Donald Hobson also it has 8 symmetry because 4 is a factor of 8. It HAS 16384 fold symmetry.
