"What it is, how to do it"
Finally, a video that will teach me how to brumate along with my beardie.
You just saved me a lot of time watching other videos on the same topic! Yours cover all my questions, thank you!
Hi oh man-- - this whole Brumation thing has me VERY stressed! I recently adopted a Beardie - maybe 4-5 months ago. The woman who was caring for him didn't know his exact age, so he's approx. 4-6 yrs. I have been caring for him as best as I possibly can, but no one knows much about the Brumation thing. I'm about to order a new enclosure for him- he came in a......75 gal??? Aquarium tank and I am not satisfied with my attempts at cleaning it ect-- I need a FRONT OPENING enclosure! Your video has encouraged me- THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! LOVED YOUR ACCENT 💜
My beardie, Mando, has slowed down significantly but he still eats from time to time and his bowel movements are less frequent (duh). I’ve been really worried about him but now that I’ve watched this video, I feel more confident in leaving him alone. He’s also preparing to shed a good portion of his face so I think that could be preventing him from going into brumation... (aside from me harassing him with love and attention which I’ll stop now).
I wanted to share just how thankful I am for you taking the time and care to make this video. I am admittedly under educated, however recently under less than ideal environmental conditions I took in this phenomenal bearded dragon, with not much other than my loving heart and innovative ability to make due with raw materials I made him a little enclosure, however he was sleeping with me and my apartment has no heat yet, I woke up this morning and he would not Wake up I literally thought he was dead, I'm freaking out, crying, doing cpr, what I understood was in the winter they hibernate, however I did not have a real reason to inquire more prior to this I was just trying to make sure he ate and I could keep him warm, fast forward a couple hours, your video saved me so much Googling and comparing and freaking myself out, words are just words until they mean something, and my heart ripped out of my chest 7 times this morning I don't have the energy to look all over I needed to find comfort In self education, I had a traumatic brain injury and cognitive issues, so it's really great to find someone who can simplify and summarize the key parts that are vital and use their words to highlight them In ways that my brain can remember or reference back to in the future. Better late than never to be informed however, I now can feel confident in my real life experience and will remain calm during his time asleep. I didn't know what to do and I felt horrible so thank you for kindly and very thoroughly communicating this for everyone it really makes a difference and leaves me with a peaceful sense of clarity and better equipped to continue my bearded dragon adventure without shaking him every 5 seconds or creepily staring at him to make sure he is breathing. I didn't feel or see a heartbeat so I was really upset, I didn't know that the heart rate and breathing slows down that slow and occurs so suddenly. Thank u
This is the first time in 6 years that my beardie has done it and I FREAKED out I am a lot more educated now thanks to you 👍
THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE! Thank you for putting this out for us. ❤
I was scared when mines was brumated, thanks for this video.
My bearded dragon refuses to eat food but doesn’t retreat to darker colder areas instead he goes onto his basking rock and just sleeps. Is that normal?
It makes me so happy to see my savannah walking around his enclosure
Perfect timing for where I am. My beardie is just starting to slow down for winter
I've got loads of people asking about it latley. It's just that the of year now
My beardie is not on a thermostat and he went into brumation as SOON as temps went a little colder! He wasn't having it! lol My kind of pet! lol (I don't like winter either!)
Thank you for taking your time to educate people on this, including myself 😩💚 so appreciated, very accurate information! 😊
Great vid Thx. Helped me out. And understand this topic
Great video! Looks like your channel is really starting to pick up steam, congrats!!!
Thanks a million.. I can't wait for the day when I can do what you've recently done.
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS any tips on growing a channel? I don't have any other forms of social media to help get subscribers.
Thank you so so much for this video. I was so confused & you put it in a way that was so easy to understand. THANK YOU for taking the time to put this out to help people 🙏🏻🙏🏻
so many great distinctions made, my beardie was brand new and i didnt realize how much the littlest things can throw them off so hard, I was running lighting manually, highly recommend a repti timer
Yes mine does and yes I have a thermostat, she has been in it since mid November 2019, she is totally asleep. I have 3 the other two are juveniles they are not even slowing down, I live in South Florida. Great video, I subscribed
I have 2 more, I hit the wrong number, I would like to add she ate like a piggy prepping for brumation, wow I did that with my uvb light just like you said, instinct kicked in
new beardie owner here... for the fecal test, do you pick up a kit and do it yourself or do you take him somewhere?
First time seeing your stuff, good stuff, well done, apreacte you sharing your knowledge
My little guy has been in brumation for about 6 weeks (his first time)
I know it's a natural thing to happen but it still made me nervous, seeing him not eat etc l.
Your video put my mind at ease. Thank you! I'm feeling a lot better about it 😊
MY tank has a touch screen timer/ thermo stat, so the tanks light turn on and of at certain times. Also that means the tank always stays at 40.4 degrees c :)
My beardie is on a thermo and she isnt brumating. She justs takes a bit more nap time but still explores and eats on her own. Thanks for all the helpful info btw!
Best brumation video ever! Thank you!
My Beardie does go into Brumation. I have a 50 inch in length tank. What is a good temperature (Fahrenheit) to have the tank on the cool side. I do live in CA and it does get damp feeling at night, as I live by beach. I have a heat emitter as well to keep it warmer. It’s only a 50 watt, so I want to make sure I have the right temp for him on cool side. I do put his lights on during the day
Thank you so much I am ALOT more educated now ☺️👍
my bearded dragon is barley a couple months old and is sleeping, closing its eyes a lot an barley moves. is it possible for a small one to be brumating?
From what I have read, they don't brumate in their first year. I would get a parasite check if I where you.. first year is very important to their growth.
Also they will stay in the basking side like 90 percent of the day because they need lots of sunlight and uvb to digest their food an get warm enough to want to eat.
@@MsAdam09 where can I get this parasite test? Our little one looks quite lethargic and is currently hiding in a corner asleep, he’s eaten a hopper and a morio worm today
@@deer5927 I use parasitevet.co.uk as I'm in the the UK. You request a kit and they send you a container and a return envelope. Put poop in the container and send it back and they will email you the results. If you are not in the UK maybe try a vet or ask your local reptile pet shop what they use.
@@MsAdam09 great thank you 😊
Thank you again for all your tips , my girl just woke up. She's not interested in eating at all . Amy post brumation tips
So if my beardie is not eating but moving around quite often... Do you think he has parasites?
Great Video
Thank you for making this! Great video
Glad you liked it. Any other questions you know where I am
That explains evvvvverything !! all 4 bromate
In the summer… which makes sense because my air conditioning is on and the house is 68-70 degrees and in the winter months our heat it on
Thank you sir. This video has put my mind at ease, as my beardie has been very lethargic over the past week or so, and seemed half asleep most days. He hasn't eaten during this time, and now he's gone into hiding in the cool part of his viv. So now I think I'll follow your advice and turn off his uvb light for an extra two hours a day 🙂
So happy this has helped
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS He's spending time basking nearly every day at the moment, and still spending time in hiding too, but still not eating. Should I be worried?
@@100Soulpower Was he ok?
@barrycooper8640 Yes, he was fine thank you. Still going strong now lol 😃
Thank w for creating this video. I have an 11 month old and I believe he’s trying to go into brumation . He currently weighs 623 grams and I have noticed he is not as active and doesn’t want his food much and I wanted to get more information on what to look for 😊
Love your channel! Can you answer this question??? My dragon went into brumation with some worms inside of him- it’s been about five days. Should I wake him up and make him poop in the bathtub and then allow him to go back to sleep?
Thanks for the great video Richard!
My girl Nuri tends to brumate in the Fall. Her enclosure is well regulated and the day/night schedule does not change throughout the year, but I think she senses the change in temperature at night (I turn off all lights and heat at night). During the summer, the temps at night are 25-27C, while during the winter the night temps are around 20C.
Hi there! Thank you for this video! I’ve liked and subscribed! My 6+ yr old bearded dragon is in brumation now. I adopted him in March 2019, he’s my first beardie. I keep his tank next to a window for his viewing pleasure, so the temperature in his tank has changed since winter began. I’ve kept his basking and uvb lights on a timer and though I’ve added heating pads, the cooler temperature coming through the window combined with the shorter natural daylight hours has led him into brumation. He was nice and healthy before. It’s been 3 weeks of sleep now. Since this is my first experience idk wether I should just leave him alone or check on him. I know it’s natural for him to sleep. I don’t know anything about his past. The day he began brumation, he had a good poop then ate a little bit of greens and blueberries and burrowed down in his hide. So it’s just a small bit of food on his stomach. I’m not breeding and he is simply a pet. Should I let him be? Should I go ahead and wake him? (I do miss him) Should I move his tank and stabilize the temperature? I just want what’s best for my guy! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Tbh I'd say just leave him. However if you are worried get him checked if he starts either ballooning up or dropping weight
Thank you! I was leaning towards leaving him be, my concern is that he really hid well and I can’t see him at all under his hide and I worry but my gut tells me he’s fine.
Thank you so much I’m getting a beardie soon and I’ve been doing lots of research and you’ve really helped
i come to these videos to learn and i just end up getting more paranoid lol
Thanks for all the info! I'm a new beardie owner & my 8-9month old beardie seems to have gone into brumation. She was acting lethargic & not interested in eating, so I brought her to a vet. Her kidney levels were off, so we did fluid injections, blood & fecal tests at the time. Everything checked out. My question is- she seems to only be half asleep.. Not burrowed, but perched up on the cool side, out of the reach of the lights.. She opens her eyes, moves her head a bit, but otherwise motionless. Do I just leave her be? Do I still soak her? Is it bad to get her out or raise her temp by holding her at this time? Its cold here in New England & its about 70 degrees on the cool side of her tank. Thanks for all the info & any more advice you can offer!
I really would have wanted a reply to this question because it's the exact same symptoms mine is having.
@@matthewscott4403 same here!!!!
We live in the US, northern midwest. Our baby Jerry is around 7 years old (we rescued 2 years ago) and he has went into brumation every winter. He goes in around Oct-Nov and stays that way til March or so. We use a thermometer to regulate temps. He is a really social guy, and starts sleeping more and not asking to get out. In the spring he starts looking around from his hidey hole and then I offer some food. He gets up and usually starts his spring Jerry dancing aka mating behaviors😆. We drop some water on his nose time to time and like my infant children I feel the need to check if he's alive but he's always fine. Just looks out a slitted eye at me like "What the hell Mom I'm trying to rest?"
Mine too ! I hope he wakes up by Christmas though lol
If he does I’m gonna get him a lot of roaches -.-
This is really good to hear because my Frank is about a year, and he went into Brumation early like end of Sept as the temps began cooling and it was getting darker a little earlier. I keep seeing they shouldn't be in brumation over 4 months, and I have been so worried he will die if he stays in until the weather is warmer. We are looking at a good 6 months of him hiding out if he does indeed stay in his hide through winter. We see snow in March a lot too, so late April / May is when it actually warms up here in KS. UGH this is so stressful.
@@nicolep.3224 Is there an update on this?
Good to know Smaug is just ready for his R&R.
This video has been very helpful, thank you so much.
First time beardie owner, here. I'd read about brumation, my beardie is a couple years old and he startd acting oddly like you were describing- going to darker parts of his terrarium and his hide when he usually doesn't, sleeping a lot more and eating less. I figured he's starting to go into brumation and I'm really nervous abou it since it's his first time, so thank you for posting this video. We live up in northern america up near canada- I'm really anxious about it but this has been really helpful and i feel a little bit more prepared, thank you
Absolutely love your videos. Learning alot. Thank you.
i thought i looked into brumation in general terms as not that many good brumation video's/info on tegus. really finding this helpful :) and will be sharinf on the tegu page
Should I still mist my beardie and the enclosure if he brumates? He loves being directly misted and drinks the water during
Wow that explains alot! I just moved my year old male into a bigger tank and moved him to my room which is colder a couple weeks ago. He's never done this before but he's been in his hide on the arid side for 3 days now
We got ours last December so he has been sleeping for weeks do you think he is going threw brumation ?
Our dragon is 7 years old, we live in Miami, Fl n its been cold here lately, what is the best bedding for him. Also we bileave he is in bremation, he stop eating and sleeps all day n night also. We are worry something is wrong. Again. What is the best bedding for him.
Second brumation here. No thermostat but two thermometers. I use an extra for heat but he knows winters coming. Short days and all that. He knows.
Thank you! This really helped!
My bearded dragon is nearly 10 years old and I think she has decided to start brumating but she has never done it before. For the past 3 days she has been lying under her fake log looking half asleep. At first I moved her under her basking light but 5 mins later she was back under the log. Im not sure if I need to leave her lights on now or just switch them off.
How dead asleep are they during brumation? Mine is still fairly alert, when I check on her she will peek her eye open, or move around and switch positions day to day. Not sure if this is normal, or if it’s a myth that they’re totally knocked out.
I want to know this as well.
Thank you for everything!
I’m just watching this video because I’m going to get a bearded Dragon so I know what it does
Do you recommend giving them substrate to bury in?
Good info. I’ve found as he nears brumation. I start reducing the lights by an hour each week. So normally basking and uvb are from 7 am to 9pm. So after week one it is 7am to 8pm. I do this til I get to 5pm. Keep at 5pm lights on for another week. Then I turn off all lights and keep a blanket over cage for about two months. She remains in total dark during that period. Checking on her occasionally. Works great.
Okay so my guy ate a lobster roach a couple days ago and has been sleeping since. Should I be worried about it sitting in his stomach then?
I think my 4 year old is going to Brumation. not too sure were going to the vet this weekend just to be safe
My boy Rockie is brumating (sleeping in hide) should I still weigh him? or would that be disturbing him?
My beardie is seemingly going into brumation, and I am slightly concerned as he hasn't pooped in about 2 weeks, will that food in his stomach be okay for brumation? For the past week I've been getting him out in the sun, sitting him on a hot water bottle to keep him warm and putting him in his favorite poop spot (my bed) but he hasn't. This and the fact he wasn't eating much and sleeping in the cold side under a log were my signs. Now I'm a bit worried as you said about the food rotting, or has that 2 weeks given him enough time to digest it before sleeping?
The question came out wrong. What if you're bearded?Dragon has a little bit of food before he goes in to brumation. How do you get rid of that?Or what's the process to do
My bearded dragon has been in what I think is brumation for several weeks now. Should I be concerned that something else is wrong??
Would a beardie possibly eat a lot more before he goes into brumation, to sustain himself during brumation or would they slow down with eating about 2 weeks beforehand... Before brumation.
Hi , I'm unsure if my bearded dragon is brumating or ill , I rescued him and he rarely eats or drinks or moves and he stays in the cold part of his tank . I'm looking for lots of advice so I can act fast if needed
I’m getting a baby this morning, I’m so excited! The only thing I haven’t covered throughly is brumation. Thanks 4 the video!
Hows he or she doing?
Ayee how is your not so Baby dragon doing!!
Hi another great video my Beaded Dragon he Is on the thermostat so it’s Viv pretty much is always the same temperature but he goes into Brumation Regular as clockwork end September and will be for 6 to 8 weeks I turn his lights down like you said keep the heat on i don’t feed him
My 3 month old beardie wont eat crickets, he looks tired. He ate some of the watermelon i offered him, but only a little. And he mostly spends his day in the warm part of his tank. Is this normal? Is he just tired of crickets?
Hi, I fed my dragon 2 times before brumation and he didn't poop. Now Iam woried if that can be bad for him and not sure what to do now. Any advice?
I haven't had my bearded dragon long maybe 2 weeks so he is still a baby. He is eating when I put crickets in his terrarium, but he sleeps alot and is a heavey sleeper. Should I be worried?
is there a way to completely stop brumation or prevent it?
I have the same question lol
Same here
Why stop it? It's in their genes. They do it for the best of themselves.
Mine's been in brumation for 6 weeks now. Hoping to see him out and about before Christmas!
That'll be a nice Xmas gift lol
Still in brumation lol. Week 10 ...
What if you're bearded?Dragon has a little food in this stomach before he bruises. How do you get rid of that
I have a 13 month old dragon. I got her when she was about 2 months old and she's my first. She's been doing many of the signs you mentioned. However, I've also noticed Midght Shadow's red skin has gotten darker. Not gonna lie, I'm going into panic mode a bit. Is it normal for them their skin to get darker when brumation starts?
Thank you for the knowledge, I'm.sure I speak for me and Midnight as well as every other Dragon owner.
Cheers.
Thanks for the video. I have a 7 year old male who's a bit odd. He eats, but only if I hand feed him. Live insects, he will eat on his own however he's seem very slow about it over the past year or so. I wasn't sure if he needed to go into brumation or not. He doesn't eat very much and poops 3 weeks to a month sometimes. He's has a good weight. I have a thermostatically controlled light and heat that go on together for 12 hours and let it drop a few degrees overnight. I'll lengthen that to 13 hrs during the summer and shorten it 11 or so in the winter. I guess he's just getting up in his years.
Do you leave the lights on or off my room stays 75 at all times
Hello! My bearded dragon is 6/7 month old and she is showing sighs of brumation. Is she too young?
Great information that is my dream lizard one day
There amazing
Thank you for this. My bearded dragon has been slowing down since mid-October. She just turned 1 and started refusing food. Had her checked and the fecal was good. She went in for a few days hiding, but then came out and seemed alert so I offered her some greens and a few crickets. She ate a small leaf but then went back into her hide and has been sleeping on and off for just over a week. Do you think that would harm her? I know they should have an empty stomach. I looked at her and got a side-eye. I don't want to disturb her unless absolutely necessary. Do you think the leaf-eating could be an issue? Thank you for reading this.
I just stumbled across this video and my dragon’s name is Diego too😂
Hi! My bearded dragon is on a thermostat and is always on the hot side. He has really slowed down eating, so I took him to the vet and they did a blood draw and fecal test plus a physical and said everything was fine.
I’m not sure why he’s not eating, do you have any suggestions? He is 2 years old.
mine has done same. i tried increasing temp to prevent brumating, if thats his issue, and it didnt change a thing. he stays in his hide. i give him soaks 2x a week, he'll bask for a bit then back into the hole to sleep or he'son the cool side sleeping. no black beard or anything. in summer his fecal showed coccidia so got rid of that and his blood work was A+. this is my first beardie so Im nervous!! good luck with yours 😊
Is there anything to worry bout
Dont want lose my breaed dragon hes wake open his eyes
Do they only go into burmation during the winter? Mine is showing signs of burmation and we’re getting worried, he’s not been eating much but doesn’t seem to have lost any weight.
My beardie is around a year old he's not been interested in food for 2 months now. Pretty sure he's brumating as he's weighed 500g going in and has lost 5g over 2 months so now 495. I just thought it was weird that he is brumating in the summer but like you say in the southern hemisphere winter is summer.. Brilliant videos keep it up
Did your birdie come through that period?? Ours has started losing her appetite
@@r1017397 yes hes alive and well i believe it was some sort of brumation
Hello. I just want to be sure about the basking light setting throughout Brumation. What temperature should the task be?
I’m pretty sure my beardie is in brumation and I’m really worried about him because I’ve been syringe feeding him because he has zero interest in food. Is this normal? Any advice would help.
G’day mate just got a baby central bearded dragon its yellow with orange stripes down it’s side looks amazing won’t eat yet though -.- top vid mate 🇦🇺
My beardie is about 5 months. She started by missing a poop day. Following days, became irritable and started pushing me away. Next became very slow and tired. Even falling asleep in the bath and limp. Lots of slow blinking and dozing off. Now, she isn't as interested in her crickets. Still eats a bit, but half as much. Her stool looks nice and uniform.
Sound like brumation is beginning?
Its summer in Florida and my 1 year old seems to be doing this. Is this normal?
So how is it done now?
I got a question? My bearded dragon started to glass surf and bee very skidish in his tank idk why he’s been acting strange I keep a eye out for him to see if his eyes are sunken in or I look at his poop to see if it’s unhealthy. His eyes are normal and so is his poop. Idk what’s wrong he’s not eating his Dubais. He’s going to sleep a lot but idk if he’s going into brumation cause he is still very active and he’s like stressed.
I always stopped my bearded from brumation. My first beardie died kind of young tho. He was only 8 yrs old and had a tumor that was cancer.
Should I have let him brumate?
I have a new beardie, and he's 11 months old and seems like he's trying to brumate already. I wonder if I should let him?
I use thermostats and live in AZ. My house temp never goes below 75 F in winter, but in winter I use heat lamp at night. In summer, the temp in house is 82 so I don't put heat lamp on at night.
My lizard sleeps all time, ignores her food and when she trys to move u can see her wobbly and struggling to get up any idea what that might be?
Great info thanks mine even though lights etc the same as always but like you pointed out outside it is now colder. She ran around like a mad for a couple of days seems she was just trying to find the best spot which she's now curled up and has been asleep all day for her first day. She had also gone off food too for the last week or so not taking live food just the occasional bit of veg.
This is my first winter with my bearded dragon and he has been hiding under a washcloth for a very long time, I usually get him out and put him under his heat, he will eat his bugs when I feed him, but he wants to sleep so I think I will let him stay under their, he hasn’t pooped in a while so I don’t know what to do about getting a fecal exam
My rescue beardie is not pooping to get the test done. Is it safe to do a warm water soak to try to get some fecal matter?
My dragons have thermostats and proper UVB..no changes. One is in brumation now. My other dragons do not brumate. It's odd.
My son's Beardie is 10 and had never brumated until this year. She moves around the cage periodically. She does not ever open her eyes that we can catch. She had some greens in her mouth as if she had Eaten but if she did. It wasn't much. Her colors look good. No weight loss. But I am concerned about this due to her age. Should I be concerned? My Forte are iguanas so I'm lost with what's going on with her. Its been about a month and a half she's been doing this. Any insight would be great thanks!
Hi I think my bearded dragon had parasites before he went into brumation and I did not take him to the vet. Now it's too late because he is sleeping. And he also ate some food right before he went into brumation and I don't think he pooped. Should I wake him up and take him to the vet or just leave him be?
I have a Rankins that just went into brumation about 3 weeks ago no thermostat but none of my other 4 dragons ever have temp normally stays within 5°f all year
