What other questions do you have about realities your pets experience?
I've heard that dogs can smell emotions from several places but never got an explanation of how. How are emotions measured quantitatively so we know dogs can smell them? Do we produce chemicals/pheromones for emotions that release into the air that we could measure with a device? Can other humans detect them?
Do dogs wagging their tails really indicate their emotions?
Please do a follow up on what we know about cat vision as teased at the end of this video
@@tylerleggett5088 We've got a video on this up on our Patreon right now!
Animal’s perception of object permanence
Thor says thank you! And I say I love Howtown. Can't wait for the next episode!

OK
How are you Vox journalists so great? Vox knows how to hire them and then when they leave, they become even better as they are able to focus on whatever they want.
Howtown, Big If True (Cleo), Johnny Harris, Search Party, etc. all excellent. All great story telling and informative.
Smells like this is gonna be one of my favorite channels.
+1 to this
HOW IS THIS YOUR FIRST VIDEO AND IT'S ALREADY THIS GOOD
What are guy building / breaking next?
@@Homer-OJ-Simpsonoml your profile 💀
What a treat! An awesome new channel featuring some old and brilliant friends. Subscribed.
OMG it's TedEd
TedEd! One of my favorite channels!
Lol, why are all my fav channels here.
I can already tell that this is going to one of my top YT channels
This.
This is what top tier content looks like. Not only everything is explained in a very clear way with top notch graphics and animations, but also the overall pace and side by side comparisons go the extra mile to drive the points home. Fabulous start! 👌
That cliffhanger
Here from Tom Scott's newsletter. Amazing first video. I'm subscribed!
Same! Very well made video!
Same here, and very glad I clicked!!!
Fantastic video. Shout out to the shot at :45... that's some serious motion control(?) / After Effects mastery. There are likely many hours behind those few seconds, and your viewers deeply appreciate it.
Staring at those green dots desperately searching for 45 . . . . . . Nope!
And this is why my Naval career was over before it began 🤦♂️
Hey you win some you lose some lol I have perfect color vision but am near-sighted :( RIP to some of my eye cones I guess
YES! Engaging storytelling and teaching, beautiful (and helpful!) graphics, gorgeous filming, tight editing, authentic and valuable interview footage, perfect pet cameos! Love it all! Can't wait for me. Thanks, Howtown team!
Is this a speed run world record for a brand new channel getting Derek’ed? 😂 Great video! I’m looking forward to more
Come here from Veritasium to say this
This is the first time that i cant wait for the first video of a youtube channel to come out,
The visualization at 9:56 of dogs experiencing the world through colourful lines representing olfactory stimuli really brought it all together for me!
Thanks for the tip Tom Scott, this channel is great!
i love that the representation for the smells that the dog is processing is also done through color, because that's the only way we can process it
This was so wonderful to watch!!
First episode already lived up to my anticipation for this channel. Can't wait for next episode!
I remember learning about this in university, but that explanation didn’t even come close to this summary. I wish I had this back in my university days. Probably would have got that question right on the exam. Future generations will have THIS to view to help them understand a very interesting topic. I really look forward to future videos of whatever topics you decide to explore and explain how we actually know something. Great channel idea.
(edited) i knew Adam seemed so familiar to me, I just had to watch the intro video to answer my own question. Skunk bear was one of my favorite RUclips channels years ago. I'm excited to see how this channel does
This is the first youtube video I've ever commented on
Yet another Tom Scott referral here.... totally tossing a subscribe! Excellent stuff and very well done!
Animation, editing is top notch. Such high quality content is a delight to watch on RUclips. Thanks for the efforts
George, I had no idea you're still around! Loved your books! 📚 😉✌️
Now I can’t stop thinking about how they got dogs to stay still in an MRI machine… Such a great video! 👏🏻
LOVE THIS, so highly produced and awesome love the animations *chef's kiss
I love how German works. ‘Umwelt’ is the word for environment and is made up of ‘Um’ (around) and ‘Welt’ (world), so it’s the world around you
Wow such an amazing start to the channel! Excited to see what you all have in store.
Super excited about this channel. The production value and visuals are fantastic, great narrative pacing, can't wait to see what you make next!
i opened the channel to check what other videos you guys have, and to my surprise...
can't believe this is only the second video there and already with this quality.
already subscribed and cant wait to see more like this! congrats!
This production quality is amazing
The editing in this video and the wholesomeness is incredible! Love it!
Subscribed. Great video, great production value, great editing. Hope you grow to be great youtubers!
The way I'm wrapping my head around it, is I imagine that dogs see different smells as different tinges of color, and "sniffing" ups that saturation to make it easier to distinguish. And they can visually remember these smells the way we visually remember what an apple looks like
This was great guys. Very excited for what you do next.
I can confirm that my thought-to-be-blind 18 year old Cairn terrier (RIP July 30, 2022) could always find her way thru our home despite obstacles particularly navigating her way to the treat cabinet.
I am so, so excited for this channel. I've been a huge fan of Joss's work for years, and though I'm just meeting Adam I can tell he's got that same incredible curiosity and communication ability. Fantastic first video, can't wait to see what's next.
This for sure is great content. Answering questions which answers we take for granted in every day life is something I am looking forward too. Keep it up!
Thanks - let us know if any of these types of questions strike you!
Great first episode! One thing that I don’t know how scientists knew were the depth perception and colour blindness of babies. It should be as simple as because the brain is still developing but it’s still amazing how scientists knew nonetheless.
You can find me talking about this channel from now on. Amazing content and presentation
What an amazing sfx shot moving from the monitor to the eye at the beginning. Holy smokes! Also, I loved the accidental heart video call effect.
Thank you for this. Very informative, well produced and delivered. I had to subscribe! Keep up the good work.
I was hoping the term Umwelt would come up! It's a really fascinating concept.
I know all you guys, and I am really happy to be a subscriber to this channel. ❤🎉
So excited for this channel and loved this first video!
Came from cleoabram channel. This is very interesting. Can't wait for next episode. Already subscribed 😍
sent here from Cleo! happy to sub to the new channel, I love the animations!
love this, Adam! can't wait for more Howtown
That was a lovely video, and the analogy of parallel world experiences at the end was certainly smile-inducing! Really excited for what’s to come next!
This was GREAT!
I'm already excited for your next video! 👍
First comment on first video of ur channel.. Great video as it be.. Couldnt wait to see another from u.. Thanks
🐾 With the person-dog relationship being so interesting, I’d love to see more videos on “ANYTHING DOG” done in your unique style. Thor could star🌟. He’s a natural talent and too adorable! Your presentations feel more like an informative conversation with a friend than a documentary. I’m anxious to see more from you!
I love that all my favorite science RUclips channels are in the comments section! Looking forward to your content, this is great!
Omg, this is so fascinating!!! Subscribed! (And yet more awesome guests lined up for the future too, wow?!)
Very impressed by how far into things you went in such a short time. Given the time constraints I didn't think you would get past just the Dichromatic vision. It did brush over some of the consequences of each element, but that is a tradeoff which allowed more diverse information in the time constraint. You include a lot of personal connections, like using people's actual dogs in the discussion and talking about what they think of things. Not my cup of tea, but for most viewers that likely helps them to feel connected. By explaining it to another person it gives the sense of it being explained in a more personal way to the viewer. Well coordinated and put together. Not that you need my uneducated opinion to know that. Lol
So glad to see Skunk Bear resurrected! Great video!
Heyo! Tom Scott sent me, like so many others right about now, and I’m glad he did. This was really great - learned a bunch about our favorite good boys and girls. Will definitely check out the rest of your videos now. Cheers!
Edit, 30 seconds later: Well, that didn’t take long. 😅
We’ve got lots more coming - I hope you stick around :)
@@Howtown Certainly plan to!
10/10, I learned so much fron this short video - absolutely excellent work folks 👌🏼
That was fantastic. Also cats was totally going to be my follow up and it's on your Patreon. I guess I gotta see about that!
Amazing can't wait to see what comes next!
This waas so cool! So excited for this new channel!
Tom Scott is adding a lot of channels where im subscribed.
I have never actually had it explaintto ne how colour bindness works (i.e. the cone cells and signals) - brilliantly done!!
This was so good! This is going to be a banger of a channel
i'm so excited for this channel!
"We are seeing one of many worlds" that is a beautiful way to think about it :D
Great video. Especially appreciated the chapter about complications and scent!
Great work! Very excited to see where this goes
I just graduated with a BS in Neuroscience & Cognitive science, and while i knew all of the information, this video genuinely helped me connect all the details I’ve learned over the past few years
Fascinating video! Plus you have the amazing Cleo Abram AND Joss Fong on your channel? Instant subscribe, sir.
elite content! im so excited about this channel🚀
reminds me of early Radiolab. Love this and can't wait for more!
Could not be more excited for this channel
This was an awesome video. Great pacing, greatly cut between graphics/explanation and interviews.
it is going to be one of the biggest infotainment channel in the future, because people are already worked there
Fascinating, but, even if it was boring with Cleo in it I would listen & watch to the end. !!! Obviously I an a subscriber we love you Cleo lol. Ax
Excellent format; fun, quick, great visuals, evidence-based = subscribed.
Did you know this just got posted on Scholarly Kitchen? Congrats! I’m looking forward to more excellent content from y’all!
Interesting video especially as a colourblind person.
One of the best recommendations I had in a long while.
That color vision 101 explainer is 🤌🤌
Fascinating
Excellent! I have seen similar explanations but this is superb, especially the visualizations of dog-vision
Wow that's so cool! Subscribed and following for more. Watched with my kids and they liked it too! Educational and fun but not too heavy in technical info. 🎉
The discussion around dogs processing smells like we process vision is really interesting as I have a 13 yr old Jack Russell who went blind 3 years ago. While he does bump into things, overall he's very good at navigating the house. Cool video!
I loved the way the info was presented, I love to know the why and the how, so this is perfect. Oh and by the way, Be Smart sent me here😁
Gives new meaning to “smell ya later”!
I'm genuinely excited for your future videos. Please consider doing some on building science--things like, why shouldn't you paint historic brick, or how does insulation work? There's so many misconceptions and bad info out there, I think it'd make a good topic.
Great start! This is going to be a great channel! I’m assuming ADAM and JOSS will be working on their own videos (though probably coordinating with each other and helping each other) as we didn’t see Joss in this video other than the cameo at the end?
The Vox journalist are the best story tellers and they seem to get better when not constrained by an employer and are able to do what they want.
Yep- we'll be taking turns publishing, and also making cameos in each other's videos
Such a cool learning! Also love the accidentally heart filter ❤😅

Yes, please, cats next! Very very good video! I knew all that, but you presented it in a very comprehensive way. Congratulations!
So you could say dogs have a really strong scents of awareness 😅
Never knew that! Love the new channel 😊
Simply an amazing video. Thanks @CleoAbram for recommending this channel. Very promising.
Cleo Abram and a dog in the first minute? Immediately love haha
Can't wait for the next one!
Liked and subscribed baby...this is good stuff. Thank you!
This channel is fantastic. Instant sub!
Such a cool video! Subscribed instantly.
