FYI: Mexico is not in Central America In Latinamerican Countries people don't see happiness in Money, Status, or some other bullshit such as the other countries but we see it in family, traditions, friends and some other things that could not explain

In Costa Rica they call it Pura Vida or Pure Life. It's about enjoying life in the moment, being mindful goes a long way toward happiness

Yeah, family, community. We're happier because we know we're all being shit on by the global north. That unites us. Western societies glorify the individual. Its easier to control a group of individuals as opposed to a united people

It's because American culture has become too toxic. Our morals, values, and priorities are in the toilet. After the fall of the Spanish Empire, they had to learn humility.

For me it's the weather. I'm mexican, and I live in cities where the weather is beautiful, the sun comes up every single day even in winter, at least a bit. And it's just the festive vibe, I think Latin American countries like dancing and partying for whatever reason, and we have Latin rhythms too, so, perhaps that could be a hint

    1. The extended family (the concept of nuclear family is destroying the social fabric of Western societies) and 2. the habit of living in the present (people who live in first world countries are always worried about what they will do in the distant future while we don't even know if we will arrive alive the next day).

I'm Mexican and it's true! We grew up with the concept that kindness is essential for connecting with our fellow man. We can't just be mad and treat people in a mean way, the how is as importante as the what 😊 This is not the only thing, but it's one of the essential core concepts we don't even see most of the time, because of how deep it is embedded in our culture. Hope this helps!

Someone from El Salvador here: I... Don't know. I'm guessing it may be due to family, community, culture and stuff like that. However in all honesty, I myself haven't perceived my country to be happy at all, a lot of people I've met were unhappy mainly with economy and FORMERLY with crime, I myself have only felt happy with people from outside this accursed nation. So I'm wondering how accurate this happiness index really is.

Many comments are pointing out how some countries with strong community life aren't as happy as latin americans... I'd say it's not only about having a community but how it's structured. In Latin America it's not based on competition, it's not about gathering your family and friends to show your achievements and trying to be more successful than your relatives. Our gatherings are all about having fun, enjoying the time with your loved ones (or even with complete strangers that you just met). When we gather, it's a special moment: we talk, we dance, we sing, we play games, we eat, we share.

I didn’t grow up in latin america but a lot of my friends did (in europe, where we have a smaller latin american diaspora than the US) and my guess would be that it helps that community, dance and music are deeply embedded in the culture - especially community, in most places people are far more likely to help their neighbour than in other places as far as I can tell. I’m mostly thinking of Brazilian culture bc that’s what I have most experience with - although I have a lot of friends from other places in Latin America (particularly Venezuela and Argentina) - and I can’t stress enough that this is an outsider's perspective and I am by no means an authority on this whatsoever.

I think the fact that we love to laugh... and try to make jokes and try to have as much fun as possible, from any situation presented to us (in order to keep laughing) is key. Something like "let's extract and synthesize the fun part out of that situation... and let's enjoy it.".
