At some point I'd love Billy Boyd to talk indepth about Master and Commander, it's such a brilliant movie with amazing sound design and he plays a great character in it which also shows off his range. I imagine filming must have been so different being a ship and it came out same year as Return Of The King so I wonder if working schedules clashed at all.
Given LOTR was all filmed at once with some reshoots after, he probably had time for shooting; I imagine it would have been very similar for Orlando Bloom with Pirates of the Caribbean.
There is SO much I loved about this conversation: the place of sadness and "failure", the value of making art for the process and not just for the product or for "success", learning more about how film scores are created, and on and on 👏🏻👏🏻 More generally with the show, I LOVE how many diverse creative voices they've featured, from so many different corners of filmmaking and other art forms. There are SO many different ways to be part of making art 💙 Thank you as always Billy and Dom, and to Michael for sharing your stories and insights! 🙌🏻👏🏻
I love that Michael G. was the other half of the amazing emotional connection we had when we watched the infamous "not Penny's boat" moment with Charlie in LOST.
The soundtrack for The Incredibles really helps to tell the story, including the "feel" of it being set in the 1960s. It's been a favorite of mine for years.
So many things to say about this show... to keep it short, I really Nerded out today! Because I nerded out so much, I'll probably send a long-winded e-mail your way. Lovely to listen to you two... can't wait for next week!
The music in Rogue One just hits different. Apparently he came really really late into the film after Alexandre Desplat had to leave. But "Your Father Would Be Proud" is too good. The final scene... ✨
Loved every moment of this weeks! Big fan of Michael, from all the way back when he did the original Medal of Honor games (which he recently revisited with Nami Melumad) to what he has done on film (Doesn't mater about the film, his work on Jupiter Ascending was amazing). Loved hearing him say to screw the rules, since I did a composition for the first time on my audio production post grad and was just prodding the keys making noises hoping or the best! But it is also great hearing the Goldsmith love. Although I have no idea how Billy didnt go down the Star Trek rabbit hole with Michael, considering he even got to direct a Short Trek!
Another amazing guest guys. Thanks for the podcast! Keeping up with the lost theme , I think Damon Lindelof would be a great guest for the show, always been fascinated by the storytelling / writing process for shows like Lost and Watchmen.
Fantastic episode! I loved Michael’s work in the Batman. I was about to cry just thinking about the Up track “Married Life.” You should make friendship onion hot sauce and sell it on the store!
This guys is amazing. After The Batman I looked up the music, found this guy, then saw he also did tons of other Marvel work. If he's the new go-to guy I'm on board. He nails the feel.
Absolutely ADORE Michael and his work. I think he's an absolute genuis. I've always been a soundtrack person it's always been something I've focused on. I don't know much about music practically. I've done bits of piano and I'm usually quite okay picking melodies up by ear and recognising them from certain parts of a movie but I can't play much or know much about how scores are created etc. I first learned about him through LOST, then with Star Trek and Super 8 and things I noticed he often worked with JJ and started noticing patterns they would do together. The music from LOST is just outstanding. I still cry listening to it. There's a track " Life and Death" which was played a lot and there's a little section at the end where it gets more sinister and it gives me chills every time. The Up melody indeed has a life of its own. What a treat, and conjures the emotions from the film every time I hear. I REALLY loved his work on the first Doctor Strange movie. For some reason or another, I listened to the soundtrack before i saw the movie and remember finishing it thinking I felt like I'd just experienced all the beats of a movie. Like you could tell when the big moments were, what was action, what was an emotional scene. Incredible. I missed his main theme a lot in the new Strange movie. Also, i assume it's a thing Michael himself is in charge of because I notice it across his different projects, he loves a pun or word-play style title for a track 😂😂. I'll have my playlist om shuffle and be like "...Buying The Space Farm? What scene in a movie is that?? Ooooh...it's a Star Trek track" 😂. Fab guest. Seems like a super chill guy too which is awesome.
It blows my mind that so people pass him up when he started out. My first experience with Giacchino was on the Medal of Honor Frontline, then the rest that followed. If anybody had any doubts about his work I would have told them to listen to the soundtrack to game. One of first games to have full orchestra which was because Spielberg always wanted that cinematic sound like when he was the executive producer on Tiny Toons and Animanics, he did it like the old days and had orchestra for the toons when other shows did not want to put in the money.
It's amusing to hear that he thought so little of his score in The Incredibles, that he thought he might be fired, since for me, the score was so perfect. The scene where Mr. Incredible sneaks into Syndrome's lair, eventually finding the computer with the list of all his dead friends. The music is vital to the way the suspense builds and builds. It was not surprising that they originally wanted John Barry, since it definitely sounds like a James Bond movie. The trailer even lifted music straight from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Other times, though, the music sounds more reminiscent of Henry Mancini, of Pink Panther fame.
My small missheard lyrics addition: Pippin's song from RoTK. "Distant shadows, clouded shade" instead of "Mist and shadows, cloud and shape". Small and not very funny but I was still surprised when I looked up the actual song lyrics.
Absolutely wonderful conversation with one of my favorite creators in Hollywood! I hope y'all bring on more film composers. The day you interview Howard Shore for 90 minutes I think I might die of happiness.
Top 25 composers of all time. His work in The Incredibles, Up, Rogue One and The Batman are fabulous, but I wish he reached that level more often, he's been making not so memorable work in the last decade. All the best for him and thank you for your beautiful work!
Ennio Morricone would write the music before the movie was made. Then the director would shoot the scenes to fit with the music. In Once Upon a Time in the West, the scene when Claudia Cardinale's character arrived in Flagstone, the music was played during filming. The shooting of the scene was paced to the length of the music; and it turned out perfect. One of my favourite films ever.
Thats very true how he would create music before seeing footage..Ennio Morricone was a Legend 🇮🇹 my favorite is the music locket in "per un pugno di dollari" and " per qualche dollaro in più" i do also like the music you mentioned in "c era una volta il west" . il buono il brutto and il cattivo western theme is also iconic. There is much more to list but wont.
This entire episode is so humbling and enlightening. I'm pretty withdrawn and empty these days. Suddenly I'm sharing joy and so happy MG is living the dream. What a kind soul ❤️
Wow, you've been booking crazy tier guests lately. Not that the show requires it, you guys are great just the two of you, but it's very interesting and cool yet.
A very interesting talk, with one of the best composers arround today! I've loved Michael's music since Lost. One of my favorite numbers by him is Parting Words, from the season 1 soundtrack. Such an emotional piece of music!
I completely agree with what you said about tv show... always feels awful when I binge whole seasons in one go. That's why I love that this podcast comes out every week! I have something to look forward to and I get so excited when I receive the notification that the new episode is out! Also, I've kind of missed Billy and Dom eat the world! Constantly my favourite bit of the show Keep up the good work, see you next week!
It's what I miss about Lost....a show that I looked forward to every week, to the point where I would always be home and would clear my schedule for it
One benefit of binging is rewatch value. Because you overwhelm your brain with so much material so quickly, you end up forgetting the bulk of it, leading to very enjoyable rewatches. That being said, it is generally better to watch an episode and give it time before viewing the next. Even just an episode a day can alter how well the content hits and by the end of it, you're maybe two weeks in and feel like you've completed an entire journey since it's been part of your daily life. Maybe there can be something of a compromise on streaming platforms, like releasing 2 episodes a week.
"Nobody knows anything" such a true sentiment. I spend my time writing novels, querying literary agents, waiting weeks and months for rejection upon rejection. Every time I receive a rejection I am reminded of all the writers who came before me. I read somewhere that 80 queries should be the threshold, but in reality nobody knows anything about anything. I am on 30 queries for my first novel, 15 for my second, and I am writing a third as we speak while revising the other two along the way as I improve as an author. I think I have put in about 10 years of concentrated work on learning how to write, yet I started writing from an early age once I could get away with writing stories for my essay assignments in school. I might be 10 years removed from publishing my first book, or even farther removed than that, but it doesn't matter that much to me anymore. I am an author and I love writing stories. That's about the gist of it.
So good. It’s the music that sets the memory, mood and ethos of the movie. Music can bring up so many memories and I am in awe of anyone that can produce that effect. Love a good hot sauce too. Well done John. I hope wee Bobby is ok too.😘
Sounds like you all had so much fun, especially at the end with Eating the World. I was laughing along with you. What an amazingly successful and amazing guest! I really loved hearing about Pixar and his experiences through creating different songs throughout the years. Super interesting! 🎶🎵🎸 Dom, you should go on the “Hot Ones” tv show if you want to try some hot sauces! I’d love to see you on that. Or, maybe both of you could do it together!
I don't enjoy shows as much if I binge them - I find myself getting quickly bored with them. I need to spread my viewing to enjoy it. I love that Disney (Marvel, Star Wars) is sticking with the weekly release schedule) so I don't feel like I need to rush watching if I don't want spoilers (which is were I'm at with Stranger Things and trying to avoid spoilers while I gradually watch it)
Giacchino is amazing and has my dream career! I’m currently a sound designer as the jobs are easier to come by, but my roots are in film score and would love to make it back to doing that in a more financially sustainable way. Great guest with fantastic insight.
The first time I had heard of Michael Giacchino was through his composition of the soundtrack for Medal of Honour: Frontline, which I continue to listen to this day as it is absolutely incredible. I would recommend anyone to give it a listen; if you were to capture the essence of the Second World War in a music box, this would likely be it.
So, according to Dom, he, Billy and Billy's wife, then girlfriend, saw Up together before they were married and before their son was born who is now 16 which means he was born in 2006 but Up came out in 2009, how does that work? 🤣
Any chance we can have less guests and more Billy and Dom please? Nothing against the guests but I do find myself zoning out for most of them, mainly because the reason I started watching was for the wonderful camaraderie between you two and those are by far the best episodes; when you are just chatting and waffling and laughing.
Regarding music ruining the movie, I absolutely hated Dunkirk because of hte music. It was piercing my brain, it was torture. I get that it was kinda the point but it was too much for me.
Quit spreading the dog fight finger in butt trick, instead lift the dog by neck or collar until it chokes, if it doesn't let go, choke it out. It will be forced to release it's bite because it starts to pass out. You can also wrap a leash around its neck and twist it tight if you're not strong enough.
I'm sad to say that Giacchino is the most overrated composer working in the industry today. His work on Jurassic World in particular is as bland as it gets. I really don't understand his popularity. He did do an "okay" job with The Batman, but I feel the movie would have been elevated a notch or two had they chosen someone like Trent Reznor instead. The main DUN-DUN-DUN theme for the titular character worked well within the movie, but as a whole you don't feel compelled to listen to the score outside of the movie experience.
The “Married Life” music for “Up” still brings me to tears. Well done, Maestro Giacchino.
Thanks, Billy! Thanks, Dominic! Thanks, Michael! 🧅
Johnny's *"TATERS!"* censorship still catches me off guard 😂
First, Adam Savage. Now Michael Giacchino!? Best podcast ever.
At some point I'd love Billy Boyd to talk indepth about Master and Commander, it's such a brilliant movie with amazing sound design and he plays a great character in it which also shows off his range. Yes!! Same!!
Given LOTR was all filmed at once with some reshoots after, he probably had time for shooting; I imagine it would have been very similar for Orlando Bloom with Pirates of the Caribbean.
That would be awesome!
One of my favorite movies. A total crime they didn't make more of the series.
@@tigahstyle I feel exactly the same

The piece called ‘Kronos Unveiled’ is incredible.
Personally, this was one of my favorite episodes. I loved the laid back conversation with one of the greatest artists in the world
Nice to see this podcast!
Even when I don't know the person y'all are interviewing, I always enjoy it. That hot sauce sounds good, too.
obviously a Spicy Onion Hot Sauce should be added to the merch site
So many things to say about this show... to keep it short, I really Nerded out today! Because I nerded out so much, I'll probably send a long-winded e-mail your way. Lovely to listen to you two... can't wait for next week!
Magnificent interview guys. So sincere and humble all of you.
I hope you make more interviews like this one. Other big composers would be wonderful.
I had no idea JJ Abrams was into modular. What a mad lad.
The music in Rogue One just hits different.
Apparently he came really really late into the film after Alexandre Desplat had to leave.
But "Your Father Would Be Proud" is too good. The final scene... ✨
The piece called ‘The Imperial Suite’ is awesome.

Those last Dom comments to the guest and meanwhile bills is picking his teeth🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Keeping up with the lost theme , I think Damon Lindelof would be a great guest for the show, always been fascinated by the storytelling / writing process for shows like Lost and Watchmen.
YES. I WANT. Haha thanks for noting!
And the leftovers too!
If you ever get Taika on this show, I'll *sugar* bricks - make it so!
The The Batman OST is my latest fave music. Just awesome. Also, Michael works really hard and is inspired. Lots and lots of respect.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault main theme showed what greatness was in store.
Easily the best guest yet. Infinitely interesting guy.
so when is Taika going to be on the Friendship Onion? 🧅 he would be such a perfectly fun passion filled guest, love you guys! 💋
Fantastic episode! I loved Michael’s work in the Batman. I was about to cry just thinking about the Up track “Married Life.” You should make friendship onion hot sauce and sell it on the store!

Interesting that Michael Giacchino is in the podcast he is awesome and fantastic, still love listening to The Friendship Onion every Tuesdays 😍
I’m a little behind but what a great episode. Absolutely loved this and makes me love this show even more
That was such a great episode! Thank you! As a musician I'm always fascinated listening to composers.
So obsessed with Michael’s work omg. I can’t wait to see Lightyear especially now that I know he’s part of it.

hoping to see another episode with just you two, love your banter and laughs over silly things
"Hold on, nobody asked you..."Look at the mess you made!" 🤣
I'd love to see Dom & Billy on Hot Ones together!
Love to Bobby ❤️🐾🐾
Great interview. Hot sauce looked delicious, but you didn't do the funk scale with a guy like him?
My small missheard lyrics addition: Pippin's song from RoTK. "Distant shadows, clouded shade" instead of "Mist and shadows, cloud and shape". Small and not very funny but I was still surprised when I looked up the actual song lyrics.
Is it not "shade"? :O
I look forward to this every week!

The first time I saw Micheal was t Juilliard School, where he shared his career. Very inspiring composer.
You guys really get some awesome guests! And you're so good about learning from them and asking questions. Solid job once again
Great guest, huge fan of his work.
I really was really ready for Dom's animal expert advice 😂43:00
Great interview! Cloud Atlas is one of the very few examples that I enjoyed the movie over the book.
Amazingly interesting 🧐 thank you yet again my daily dose of Tuesday happiness
I love hot sauce! Never wanted to try the Eat the World more. Real bummer nobody can go buy it to try em for themselves.
Could inspire you to make some :)
This entire episode is so humbling and enlightening. I'm pretty withdrawn and empty these days. Suddenly I'm sharing joy and so happy MG is living the dream. What a kind soul ❤️
That was interesting! Nice interview!
Wow, you've been booking crazy tier guests lately. Not that the show requires it, you guys are great just the two of you, but it's very interesting and cool yet.
Michael was a great guest! I love hearing someone nerd out about music!!!
This was a great episode and a great guest
That was fun, thanks guys! Damon lindelof could be a great guest too, sending love from Brasil 🇧🇷

I never hear Dominic talk about the 100 code. I loved that show. I finally was able to find it on DVD. Anyone else watch it. So so good.

Love the podcast. My only complaint is the sub count should be higher! We gotta get our beloved hobbits sub count up gang!!
Dude wrote a killer Star Wars score in like 4 weeks...
Exactly.
I don't enjoy shows as much if I binge them - I find myself getting quickly bored with them. I need to spread my viewing to enjoy it. I really enjoyed this episode with David Cross.
Very interesting how music in films work ,i agree that music can make a film much better, thankyou all 🧙♂️
Yours truly, Johnny Dollar! Great OTR show!
...I had no idea that David Cross was coming on this podcast.
May I suggest "Stilz-Into the starscape" for the Funky for you section? That tune never fails to make me dance.
Truly one of the greatest composers of our time.
Labor of Love from Star Trek is a top 5 soundtrack song of alllll time
That song deserved a better movie
Are you guy's going to be at FanX in Salt Lake City, Utah?
This is a good guest!
So, according to Dom, he, Billy and Billy's wife, then girlfriend, saw Up together before they were married and before their son was born who is now 16 which means he was born in 2006 but Up came out in 2009, how does that work? 🤣
“Dom’s a hot medium” 🔥
Any chance we can have less guests and more Billy and Dom please? Nothing against the guests but I do find myself zoning out for most of them, mainly because the reason I started watching was for the wonderful camaraderie between you two and those are by far the best episodes; when you are just chatting and waffling and laughing.
Man LOST still top 3 fav shows ever. Feel like when Charlie died the show kind of started to die.
YEEESSSSSSSS🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Favourite soundtracks, please try.
Blade Runner - Vangelis
Birdy - Peter Gabriel
you guys should try to go on Hot Ones with Sean Evans!!
Timestamps?
So, where's the hot sauce recipes?
Regarding music ruining the movie, I absolutely hated Dunkirk because of hte music. It was piercing my brain, it was torture. I get that it was kinda the point but it was too much for me.
They bring Sean Evans on and he brings The Bomb Beyond Insanity for Billy and Dom Eat the World . . .
Hey Billy, how is the 4th Beecake album coming along?
I made hot sauce over Covid too!!
SPOILER ALERTS for Lost
